  • Ormax Media relaunches film campaign tracking and box office forecasting tool Ormax Cinematix

Ormax Media relaunches film campaign tracking and box office forecasting tool Ormax Cinematix

MUMBAI: With the audience slowly returning to movie theatres post the Covid2019 pandemic, media consulting firm Ormax Media has announced the relaunch and expansion of its film campaign tracking and box office forecasting tool Ormax Cinematix (OCX). OCX was launched in 2010 for the Hindi film industry, and expanded to cover the Hollywood sector in India in 2014. In its new avatar, OCX will track theatrical films in nine language, namely Hindi, English, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Kannada, Marathi, Punjabi and Bengali.

OCX uses consumer research across India to measure the performance of upcoming film releases on three parameters: Buzz, Reach & Appeal. A statistical model uses these parameters to estimate the First-Day Box Office (FBO), a forecast of the opening day collections of all the films being tracked by the tool. Over the last few years, FBO has established itself as a highly credible currency in the film industry, with 83% accuracy since 2018.

With the expansion to regional languages, Ormax Media has reiterated its focus on regional content. Earlier this year, the company had extended its television character popularity tracking tool Ormax Characters India Loves to Tamil, Telugu, Marathi and Bengali GEC categories.

Ormax Media founder & CEO Shailesh Kapoor said, “Ormax Cinematix has been an industry benchmark for the Hindi film industry for more than a decade, and is used by studios to take key business decisions related to marketing, distribution and acquisition of films. With an expansion into nine languages, the tool will now be available for producers across India. This expansion reiterates our commitment towards increasing our focus on language markets in India in 2021”.

OCX has been the film industry’s go-to tool for first-day box office forecasts over the last decade. At the time the tool hit the pause button in March 2020 when theatres were closed due to the lockdown, more than 30 studios and producers were subscribers of the tool, including Yash Raj Films, Dharma Productions, Disney, Viacom 18, Sony Pictures, T-Series, Zee Studios, Balaji Telefilms and Excel Entertainment, among others.

Ormax Media partner Gautam Jain added,  “Pan-India films, which cut across languages, are an emerging trend. This year itself will see several films that will travel across languages, such as KGF Chapter 2, Radhe Shyam and RRR. Ormax Cinematix needed a multi-language expansion to keep up with this trend. With nine languages being covered now, we are confident that our first-day box office (FBO) forecast numbers will be as looked forwarded to by producers, directors and actors in the regional markets, as they have been by those in Bollywood”.

  • Netflix outpaces traditional players in Oscar race with 35 nominations

Netflix outpaces traditional players in Oscar race with 35 nominations

KOLKATA: After a year of theatre shutdown, it comes as no surprise that streaming services are dominating the awards season. Netflix, which swept the Golden Globes earlier this month, is ruling the nominations at the 93rd Academy Awards, or Oscars, too. The streaming colossus has scored 35 nominations for its movies; arch rival Amazon Studios has bagged 12 nominations. Among others, Disney+ and Apple TV+ earned their first Awards nods.

Netflix picked up 24 nominations last year. For 2021, it has scored 10 nominations for David Fincher’s Mank. The black-and-white drama about 1930s Hollywood has been nominated in several categories including best picture, director, actor and supporting actress.

Aaron Sorkin’s The Trial of the Chicago 7, which picked up six nominations, is also another best picture contender from Netflix. Other nominees from the platform include The White Tiger, Over the Moon and Crip Camp.

Amazon Studios’ One Night in Miami and Sound of Metal bagged nominations in several categories, with the latter’s lead actor, Riz Ahmed, becoming the first Muslim to be nominated for the best actor Oscar. It also scored nominations for Sacha Baron Cohen-starrer Borat Subsequent Moviefilm.

“This past year we were incredibly lucky to work with an extremely diverse and talented group of filmmakers, actors and crews, and we couldn’t be prouder of their achievements. Each of the four nominated films are brilliantly executed, weaving together poignant stories and artistry that have resonated with audiences everywhere," Amazon Studios head Jennifer Salke said as quoted by The Hollywood Reporter.

The Walt Disney Co’s streaming service Hulu made the nominees list for The United States Vs. Billie Holiday. Moreover, its shining star in d2c race Disney+ picked up its first Oscar nominations. It got best animated feature nods for Onward and Soul. Another Disney+ release, Mulan, received nominations for costumes and visual effects.

Another new entrant in the streaming race, Apple TV+ also swept up its first Oscar nominations including animated feature nod for Wolfwalkers, and best sound nod for war film Greyhound.

2020 was an exceptional year for traditional studios and multiplexes. Amid worldwide lockdown, many studios delayed their big ticket theatrical releases; others took the direct to OTT route. To adjust with the unprecedented situation, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences had to allow films without theatrical release for Oscar nominations.

  • Rashaana Shah: Living her passion

    Rashaana Shah: Living her passion

LOS ANGELES: You may not have heard of Rashaana Shah yet but the chances are good this will soon change. This former Bollywood actress turned Hollywood film producer and entrepreneur is literally exploding onto the scene with films such as the cutting-edge comedy/reality-check, Blowing Up Right Now to the uplifting holiday fare, A New Christmas.

“My years as an actress is a lot of what I am today,” stated Shah about her time in Bollywood. Her leap to Hollywood was in part due to the unique opportunities for independent filmmakers. In 2012, she co-founded Mulberry Films, headquartered in Los Angeles and Mumbai, which focuses on bestselling books for film and television adaptation. Shah consciously picks books based on true-life events and with real heroes that can resonate broadly across global audiences.

A project based upon the Uttarakhand tragedy is in the works. Centred on true-life events which date back to 1965 when the United States CIA and Indian officials collaborated to set-up a listening device on Nanda Devi, the second-highest mountain in India, overlooking a Chinese Nuclear test site. The listening device, which was powered by radioactive plutonium, was lost in the expedition to install it and never found. It is speculated the plutonium being released by the device may have triggered the glacier burst above Uttarakhand.

Nanda Devi was recently in the headlines because of the tragic glacier burst in Uttrakhand that resulted in the death of at least fifty people.

Other projects in various stages of funding and production include, The Collaborator, an adaptation of the bestselling book by Mirza Waheed, a gripping story on the long-lasting effects of war and an adaption of The Queue by Basma Abdel Aziz, a dystopian story set in futuristic Egypt about a centralized authority controlling the lives of the masses.

Mulberry is also the co-executive producer on the television show Ungifted, based on the children's novel by Gordon Korman. The project was picked up by Nickelodeon in 2020 prior to the pandemic, and is soon to get into production. Shah has also starred in multiple Bollywood and international films that have won international accolades and awards including Colors of Passion by renowned director Ketan Mehta and IFC TV miniseries Bollywood Hero by comedian Chris Kattan.

Speaking of filmmaking in general, Shah stated, “If you want to have a global impact there are only two ways of doing it, you become a president of a country or you make a big Hollywood Film.”

Her advice to other aspiring women filmmakers in India, in the United States and beyond: “Support each other,” Shah said, “and don’t fear society…be fearless.”

  • West Bengal allows theatres to fully reopen

West Bengal allows theatres to fully reopen

MUMBAI: Even as the Tamil Nadu government has reversed its decision permitting 100 per cent occupancy in cinema halls following directions from the ministry of home affairs, it is now the turn of West Bengal to allow theatres to fully reopen. West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee made the announcement while inaugurating the 26th Kolkata International Film Festival on Friday.

Her directive is to be notified by chief secretary Alapan Bandopadhyay and is against the central government’s unlock rules, which stipulate 50 per cent occupancy.

The move came a day after single-screen owners in West Bengal urged the state government to allow 100 per cent occupancy in theatres, citing poor box office returns as the reason.

Tamil Nadu had taken a similar decision earlier this week but had to withdraw it on receiving clear cut directions from home secretary Ajay Bhalla that the unlock restrictions must not, under any conditions, be diluted. The current set of unlock guidelines will be enforced till 31 January.

Soon after, the Tamil Nadu government issued a statement saying that the audience in all cinema theatres, including those in multiplexes and shopping malls, shall be capped at 50 per cent till further orders. The Madras high court had also stated that it believed that the state government should  reconsider its former decision of allowing 100 per cent  occupancy in cinema theatres in view of the Coronavirus situation in the state. It also said that it is not proper to give economic problems top priority when the nation is going through a pandemic.

Now it remains to be seen is if the home secretary will once again write to the West Bengal authorities and if the Centre’s rules will be followed. It must be recalled that the Tamil Nadu government led by the AIADMK is an ally of the BJP which has formed the Union government. The Trinamool Congress is in power in West Bengal and it is a bitter rival of the Narendra Modi-led BJP.

The panel comprises eminent filmmakers from across the world, like Pablo Cesar (Argentina) as chairman, Prasanna Vithanage (Sri Lanka), Abu Bakr Shawky (Austria), Priyadarshan (India), and Rubaiyat Hossain (Bangladesh).

Pablo Cesar is an Argentine filmmaker. He has contributed to the African cinema by making the critically acclaimed films, Equinox, the Garden of the Roses, Los dioses de agua and Aphrodite, the Garden of the Perfumes.

Prasanna Vithanage is a Sri Lankan filmmaker. He is considered one of the pioneers of the third generation of Sri Lankan cinema. He has directed eight feature films including Death on a Full Moon Day (1997), August Sun (2003), Flowers of the Sky (2008) & With You, Without You (2012). His films have won many prestigious national and international awards and also enjoyed commercial success in his country. In Vithanage’s early theatre work, he translated and produced plays by international writers, adapted works of world literature to film. He has battled against censorship in Sri Lanka and worked as an educator of cinema who has conducted many master classes in the subcontinent for young filmmakers and enthusiasts.

Abu Bakr Shawkyor ‘A.B.’ Shawky is an Egyptian-Austrian writer and director. His first feature film, Yomeddine, was selected to participate in the 2018 Cannes Film Festival, where it was screened in the main competition section and competed for the Palme d'Or.

  • Tamil Nadu allows cinemas to operate at 100% capacity

Tamil Nadu allows cinemas to operate at 100% capacity

NEW DELHI: In a big boost to the Tamil film industry, the state government on Monday issued a new directive removing the 50 per cent cap on occupancy in theatres.

Cinema halls in Tamil Nadu can now operate at 100 per cent capacity while following the standard operating procedures issued by the government. Precautionary measures will also be screened from time to time to spread awareness among the audiences.

The order comes days after actor Vijay and theatre owners requested chief minister Edappadi K Palaniswami to allow theatres to function at their full capacity.

Back in October, the ministry of home affairs had released guidelines wherein film theatres were only allowed to operate with 50 per cent seating capacity to ensure social distancing.

Tamil Nadu is the first state to allow cinema halls to operate at 100 per cent capacity. The 50 per cent cap, however, still remains in neighbouring states. In fact, only last week, the Kerala government gave its nod to re-open theatres with 50 per cent capacity with Covid-safety protocols in place.

However, the film industry continues to be hit as no big Bollywood releases are coming to the silver screen.

  • A Bra Ka D Bra is a takedown of the culture of body shaming

A Bra Ka D Bra is a takedown of the culture of body shaming

NEW DELHI: Insecurities. Everyone has them. Stemming from the perception of how others see us. In the age of Instagram we’re all on display, and for many people, their self-esteem hinges on that one ‘heart’ from virtual strangers. Even though no two bodies are alike, and there is no right way to be beautiful, we’re all chasing that unattainable ideal – be it bubble booties, thigh gaps or perfectly plump bosoms.

Which brings us to the heart of the movie A Bra Ka D Bra – the story of a young woman struggling to accept the fact that she is flat-chested. Her struggle is very real and very valid, for she inhabits a society where adolescent girls put women like Kim Kardashian and Kylie Jenner on a pedestal and want to look like them in the hopes of one day getting a taste of their high-rolling lifestyle. While the protagonist Bani may not aspire to be a Kardashian, she is exceedingly conscious of her own lacking assets, a fact that is rubbed in her face at every turn by family members, peers and even random passers-by. Her cousin knowledgeably points out to her – bada hai tabhi to behtar hai (Bigger is better) – which perfectly sums up the mindset of people today.

Living in this toxic environment does a number on Bani, who resorts to every trick in the book, from creams to padding, to give her cup size a boost. While these scenes may have been presented humorously, they also highlight the insidious effect that body image issues and body shaming can have on a person’s psyche. Bani, played brilliantly by Prachi Bansal, is far from defined by her boobs (or lack thereof). She is a confident ace basketball player, a starry-eyed small town girl who moves to the big city, and dreams of fulfilling her passions and finding love. Yet her vibrant personality and busy life are gradually overshadowed by one aspect of herself that she is insecure about – which society has conditioned her to believe is the be-all and end-all of being a woman.

Like any teenage girl, Bani wants to fit in, make friends, have a lit college life – so when nature fails her, she takes matters into her own hands and stuffs her bra with fake pads. The scheme pays off – for a while. The pads hamper her when she plays, so she quits basketball. It also attracts an unwelcome suitor, which leads to unsavoury consequences. Eventually, the pretence and lies catch up with Bani, pushing her into despair and making her consider an extreme and irreversible step.

But thanks to her clueless but supportive father, better sense prevails. The message is clear: love yourself. Acceptance and being comfortable in your skin may be hard to come by, but its better than kowtowing to superficial standards of beauty that invariably take a toll on one’s self-esteem.

Bani’s story is a reality that millions live with. Some are unhappy with the shape of their body, some with their height, others with their skin tone. They are trolled and shamed both online and offline; they are depressed and filled with self-loathing. Producer Shyamashis Bhattacharya and director Neelima Bajpai take up a bold subject to explore in their maiden venture for the big screen and they execute it well. Bani’s inner turmoil and frustration with the world that constantly looks down on her is showcased with a deft hand by the writing team comprising Bajpai, Amit Babba and Indira Bisht. The screenplay could have been more cohesive and flown better, but doesn’t detract from the overall impact of the story. The supporting cast also leaves an impression – Avinash Mishra is Vidyut, the lovable himbo Bani crushes on; Poulomi Das plays the prickly friend Shanti and Luv Vispute shines as the happy-go-lucky confidant with a few secrets of his own.

A Bra Ka D Bra is a step in the right direction. It’s a wake-up call for a society obsessed with outward appearances, and a shot in the arm for those lacking in body confidence. The film can be streamed online as a pay-per-view on BookMyShow.
