Sridhar Rangayan recommended, “It is the opening film of the festival, directed by National Award-winning director Onir, and is a beautiful film about love. But what is more beautiful is that Onir has cast queer actors to play the role.”

KASHISH 2023 introduces Ismat Chughtai Award

Mumbai: The fourteenth KASHISH Mumbai International Queer Film Festival, South Asia’s biggest LGBTQ+ film festival, announced institution of a new award from this year – the Ismat Chughtai Award for Best Indian Woman Filmmaker, instituted in memory of eminent Indian Urdu novelist, short story writer, liberal humanist and filmmaker Ismat Chughtai, by her grandson and filmmaker Ashish Sawhny.

“I am delighted to partner with KASHISH, after 13 years of having many of my films screened, being part of panels and supporting the festival as best as possible. It was my Nani – Ismat Chughtai, the liberal feminist writer & filmmaker who gave me wings to fly. Hence, the idea to institute an award, especially for women filmmakers in her honour, seemed like a great match, and I hope this encourages more diversity and representation amongst our filmmakers”, said Ashish Sawhny.

Founder festival director Sridhar Rangayan said, “This award is an attempt to acknowledge and encourage Indian women filmmakers to tell path-breaking narratives infused with progressive, positive viewpoints. We also wanted to encourage gender parity in filmmaking, which in India is still woefully lacking.  And Ismat Chughtai ji’s works like Lihaaf will definitely inspire more women filmmakers to make films on LGBTQ+ focused films”.

The five women filmmaker nominees are Akanksha (film Road Blocked Ahead), Anisha Sharma (film Beach), Kamya N (film Lailaa Manju), Kartika Nainan Dubey (film Oas) and Preeti Kanungo (film Malwa Khushan). Their films push the narratives beyond patriarchy and genders.

Catch Kim Cattrall in Lionsgate’s comedy “About My Father”

Mumbai: Fashion icon Kim Cattrall is set to light your screens ablaze in Lionsgate’s upcoming comedy feature About My Father. Making her comeback to the big screen after 2019, Kim’s character Tigger Collins is a lady not to be messed with. A U.S. Senator who has only known law and order her whole life, Tigger finds it tough to let go of the tight reins. When she meets her to-be son-in-law, Sebastian, and his kooky father, Salvo (played by Robert De Niro) Tigger soon realises she’s in for one crazy ride. It will take only a true Italian Maniscalco to let her hair down. With the movie set to release on 26 May 2023 here’s what Kim Cattrall had to say about her character, Tigger.

Talking about her character Tigger McArthur, Kim Cattrall said, “(Tigger) is very well educated, very smart, and very tenacious. Like many women who’ve reached a high-level position, she’s had to fight her way to the top. Tigger is a control freak, and she likes to put things in a very precise box. So, when she meets Salvo and Sebastian, it’s not what she expects or wants for her daughter. But it’s exactly what she should have.”

On what made her take up the film, the ‘Sex and the City’ actress added, “It was such an easy yes. My agent called me and said there’s this film with Robert De Niro and he plays a hairdresser and I said I’m in. I don’t care what it is. I want to not only do it, I wanna see it, I wanna be it.”

Helmed by Laura Terruso and written by Austen Earl and Sebastian Maniscalco, the movie will be released by Lionsgate and PVRINOX Pictures.

  • Anna Kendrick discusses her character in ‘Alice, Darling’

Anna Kendrick discusses her character in ‘Alice, Darling’

Mumbai: Is everything truly fair in love and war? Lionsgate Play’s latest psychological-thriller Alice, Darling takes you on Alice’s journey, as she builds the strength and courage to face the harsh reality of her emotionally abusive relationship. Bringing to light the sensitive issue of emotional abuse prevalent in the society, Alice, Darling encourages us to start a conversation around identifying and facing emotionally abusive relationships in our own lives. Premiering on 26 May, exclusively on Lionsgate Play in India, the movie stars Oscar nominee Anna Kendrick supported by Charlie Carrick, Kaniehtiio Horn and Wunmi Mosaku in pivotal roles.

Speaking about her character Alice, actor Anna Kendrick said, “When we meet Alice, she doesn’t really know who she is. It was actually a really bizarre character to play because the whole point is that she has sort of lost herself, and that everything in her focus and all her energy is going towards being kind of small and flexible and to manage her partner’s potential reactivity. And the sense that if she’s just a little bit better, if she is just perfect, then everything will be okay – that mindset slowly creeps in, and before she knows it, she doesn’t recognise herself. Only when she is with her close friends does Alice have a little more room to breathe. It’s interesting because she’s resistant to that at first since if she fully recognises and accepts herself and then returns to her partner, she will be in serious trouble and her carefully constructed self-sabotaging world will come apart.”

Talking about what interested her about the lead character Alice, director Mary Nighy said, “This character seems fine on the surface, but obviously, you have little windows into her. A lot of the time that she is in the bathroom, obsessively twirling and pulling her hair – it is clear she is in great distress about something. So how do you bring that out in a subtle way that tells you what’s happening inside the character? That was really appealing and interesting to me.”

  • KASHISH 2023 to open with Onir’s feature Pine Cone

KASHISH 2023 to open with Onir’s feature Pine Cone

Mumbai: The edition 14 of KASHISH Mumbai International Queer Film Festival, South Asia’s biggest LGBTQ+ film festival will open on 7 June at Liberty Cinema with filmmaker Onir’s latest film Pine Cone, which will have its world premiere at the festival.

National Award winning filmmaker Onir said, “I and the entire team of Pine Cone are thrilled that our film will have the world premiere at KASHISH which I consider to be home. This is for the first time that any of my films is having a world premiere in India and it’s special for many reasons. It comes at a historic time when the Supreme Court of India is debating Marriage Equality. Our film is a celebration of queer love seen from a queer gaze, and it gives me immense pleasure to bring it to my city at this very precious festival”.

The festival will close on 11 June with the Canadian feature film When Time Got Louder, directed by Connie Cocchia, who identifies as an LGBTQ+ director, producer, and writer. The film is a coming of age drama of a young lesbian girl, and her family bonding with her autistic brother starring Willow Shields (Hunger Games), Elizabeth Mitchell (Lost), Lochlyn Munro (Riverdale), and the debut performance of Jonathan Simao. The film also involved the autistic and LGBTQ+ communities throughout production in casting, crew and music selections.

Founder festival director Sridhar Rangayan said, “The Opening Film and Closing Films are really special as they bookend the festival and mark the beginning of a conversation and also flag off ideas for future conversations. We are opening and closing with films by queer filmmakers, involving queer artists and technicians! That is surely the right way ahead”,

“In that sense Pine Cone from India and When Time Got Louder from Canada are two films that are unique, because the first is about contemporary gay relationships in India post Sec377 reading down; and the second is a film that explores intersectional relationships between queerness and disability. Both films are sure to leave a mark long after you have exited the theatre and make you reflect upon life”, he elaborated.

KASHISH 2023 will screen 127 films from 45 countries out of which 110 films from 41 countries will play at the on-ground edition at Liberty Cinema and Alliance Française de Bombay.

The festival will also have panel discussions, performances by the queer community and allies, workshops, interactive sessions and a film pitching session for your LGBTQ+ filmmakers to make their next short film.
