“We continuously experiment with the latest in film technology”: Red Comet Films’ Ankit Ahuja

Mumbai: In the ever-changing landscape of advertising and filmmaking, the art of storytelling has emerged as a transformative force, driving brand connections and audience engagement like never before. Visual storytelling is one such thing that requires wit, strategy and creativity. Visual storytelling transcends language barriers and cultural differences and encourages creativity and originality in the way stories are presented. It provides filmmakers and advertisers with a canvas to experiment with different styles, aesthetics, and visual techniques, fostering innovation in the industry.

At the forefront of this creative revolution stands Red Comet Films’ founder and COO and IJCP Group chief strategy officer Ankit Ahuja, with whom Indiantelevision.com caught up to explore more on the topic.

Ankit is the founder and COO of Red Comet Films, a film production house with a pan India Presence. With the talent and innate ability to work well in non-fiction filmmaking, directing television commercials and digital films, Delhi-based Ankit Ahuja has amassed dozens of television, commercial and digital ad films credits since beginning his career in 2008. His most recent shows include “Highway on My Plate 2.0 with Rocky and Mayur” and a special one hour documentary titled “The Art of Motoring – The Morris Garages Story”.

    Edited Excerpts:

On Red Comet Films’ inception, the idea behind it and its USP

Red Comet Films started on 9 August, 2019.

I have always had a vision and desire to create captivating, cool, collaborative and influential video campaigns along with an eagerness in delivering messages through storytelling. Red Comet Films branched out of these ideas along with an aim to merge creativity, innovation, and strategic thinking to produce visually stunning and conceptually engaging ad films and digital content.

Several factors like providing end-to-end solutions, agility, running on purpose-driven branding combined with our commitment to quality and having a collaborative approach has also helped the house in standing out.

On ensuring that your ad films captivate viewers from the first frame and maintain their interest throughout the entire duration in an era of short attention spans and information overload

At Red Comet Films, we understand the significance of crafting ad films that seize attention from the very first frame and keep audiences hooked till the last moment for maximum brand exposure.

We try to keep it simple and crisp and the secret lies in understanding the pulse of our audience and so we immerse ourselves in comprehensive research to comprehend the aspirations, desires, and pain points of intended viewers.

To keep the narrative engaging, we maintain a delicate balance between creativity and strategy. While creativity sparks interest, strategic thinking ensures that the films align seamlessly with the brand’s objectives and desired outcomes.

On Red Comet Films embracing new technologies and trends to stay relevant in this dynamic environment

From concept development and scripting to pre-production, production, and post-production, continuous innovation is at the heart of our process. By experimenting with novel techniques, formats, and interactive elements, we keep our content fresh and compelling, making it difficult for viewers to look away. Add the latest technologies into the mix and films take a whole new dimension. We continuously experiment with the latest in film technology. From super fast drones for automobile commercials, to robotic camera arms for the best camera tricks, our team excels at capturing the essence of a brand or product and translating it into compelling visual narratives.

We invest in the latest and most advanced film production equipment to ensure that our ad films meet the highest standards of quality and visual appeal. From state-of-the-art cameras to innovative lighting and sound equipment, we are committed to using cutting-edge tools to enhance our storytelling capabilities.

On condensing a compelling narrative into a concise format without losing its essence as storytelling in ad films can sometimes be restricted by time limitations.

I believe that we have honed our expertise in crafting impactful ad films that maintain the essence of the narrative even within constraints.

Our key strategies lie in the core message that a brand might want to convey. By embracing simplicity and combining that with an attempt to create an emotional hook, we utilize the perks of visual storytelling to its utmost.

Opening moments are also vital in a constrained period. We focus on developing a fascinating and attention-grabbing opening that quickly piques the audience’s interest and engages them in the story. Additionally, we adopt well-scripted voiceovers and on-screen text, to enrich and deepen the storyline in a short amount of time.

We make a conscious effort to seamlessly integrate the brand into the story to strengthen its value proposition in order to make a lasting impression on the audience.

On approaching documentary projects differently from ad films, and the key elements you focus on to engage the audience in this format

Documentaries adopt a distinct nature of filmmaking where authenticity is paramount. Unlike commercials, which are frequently scripted and prepared, I feel documentaries involve meticulous research and fact-checking. So, to create a thorough and accurate narrative, we invest time and effort in deeply absorbing the subject matter, conducting interviews, acquiring data, and investigating multiple opinions.

Documentary projects give us a chance to explore the world through the subject’s perspective. We employ a character-driven approach, allowing participants to voice their experiences, views, and difficulties in order to make the documentary more personal and captivating.

We also ensure that we dedicate mindful attention to soundscapes, background music, and ambient sounds to improve the audience’s emotional journey.

On Red Comet Films’ collaboration with both national and international brands and differences in storytelling preferences or cultural nuances that you had to consider while crafting ad films for a global audience

Absolutely. Through our experience over time in crafting ad films for a global audience and collaborating with both national and international brands, we have realised the importance of understanding the unique sensibilities, values, and communication styles of different regions or cultures.

We explore universal themes that have cross-cultural appeal while also being mindful of local preferences. Identifying cultural variances has allowed us to avoid anything that may be judged offensive or improper in a particular region. We keep in mind to be sensitive in our usage of humour and tones so that they do not misalign with the social norms and values of the viewers of a particular place.

Language also plays a crucial role in communicating with our audience due to which we tailor the information or content based on linguistic preferences. Red Comet Films values diversity and inclusion in storytelling, amplifying a diverse spectrum of voices and viewpoints. These serve to increase the audience’s relatability which helps in conveying the intended message effectively.

On the future of ad film production and storytelling, and  envisioning Red Comet Films contributing to the evolving landscape

The future of ad film production and storytelling is a canvas of infinite possibilities for Red Comet Films. What inspires us the most is the meeting point of art and technology which allows us to further explore cutting-edge breakthroughs like never before. We aim to dive deeper into incorporating more of virtual reality and augmented reality as gateways to immerse viewers in captivating worlds, blurring the borders between fiction and reality.

By delving deeper into data analytics, we want to have a better understanding of audience preferences so that the content we put forward elicit a visceral response from even the most picky viewers.

At Red Comet Films, we embrace weaving tales that defy convention, incite wonder, and connect hearts in an unbreakable bond. Purpose-driven branding drives our passion which brings a greater meaning and a profound sense of responsibility into our ad films.

We commemorate brands that are dedicated to making a positive impact and we want to continue working with them to keep creating narratives that inspire change and illustrate the road to a better world.

  • Six interesting facts about Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling’s Barbie

Six interesting facts about Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling’s Barbie

Mumbai: Many of us have played with Barbie dolls as kids, and many of us have dreamed of living the vibrant and cheerful life of Barbie as kids. This iconic toy has been a childhood friend of almost every young girl worldwide. What if we say that Barbie and her world are no longer just a fantasy? Well, it isn’t, as the critically acclaimed director Greta Gerwig has poured life into it! Starring Margot Robbie, Ryan Gosling, Simu Liu, Kate McKinnon, Micheal Cara and many other acclaimed actors of Hollywood, the upcoming live-action film Barbie has been taking over the internet. This film goes beyond just a fantasy as Barbie and her friends also get a hilarious dose of reality. The anticipation is about to end as this highly awaited movie is set to hit the screens this Friday, 21 July 2023, and can be watched at your nearest PVR INOX cinemas. While you eagerly await Barbie’s on-screen arrival, you should check out these six fascinating facts about this movie that will increase your excitement.

    1. Did you know Barbie is actually a nickname?

Yes, that’s right! Known globally as Barbie, this iconic doll’s name is actually Barbara Millicent Roberts. Barbie is also the first doll to have womanly features, an idea of Mattel co-founder Ruth Handler. She supposedly created this then-unique adult-bodied Barbie doll after watching her daughter give adult roles to her paper doll. Even though the board members weren’t too thrilled about it, this genius idea made Barbie a global icon.

    2. It’s a funny story about how Ryan Gosling came to play Ken.

Let’s just say Ryan and Ken are best friends now, with Ryan lighting up the room with his ‘Kenergy’. How this came to be is a funny story. On The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, Ryan shared that he found his daughter’s Ken doll in a rather sorry position, face down in the dirt beside a squished tree in his backyard. That was it for him, and he took on the role of Ken to tell the world this poor guy’s story. Quite a fantasy bromance, we must say!

    3. The iconic Barbie house isn’t just a fantasy.

Remember the humongous, larger-than-life and pink Barbie doll house many of us wanted but couldn’t get? Well, it’s no more just a large mass of plastic but a real-life, brick-and-mortar house! Ditto; like the fantasy toy of childhood, this Malibu Barbie house was recently up for rent by Airbnb. If only this were in India, isn’t that what you’re thinking right now?

    4. Pink-only Wednesdays on the Barbie sets

Pink Wednesdays… ring a bell, right? In the spirit of Barbie and getting inspired by Mean Girls, Margot Robbie made everyone on sets, and we mean everyone wear pink on Wednesdays. It gets funnier. Those who didn’t wear pink were fined. Hilariously, the actress would personally collect the fines, and the money would be donated to charity, which we are sure must have been a lot.

    5. Margot’s singing debut as Barbie

Margot is a fantastic actress with a string of hits like Wolf of the Wall Street, Suicide Squad and I, Tonya under her belt, but we never heard her sing. The actress is set to cross another significant milestone as an artist as she is about to stun us with her vocal prowess in a couple of songs in Barbie alongside Ryan Gosling. We can’t wait to hear their melodic symphony!

    6. Barbie has painted the B Town pink too!

The Barbie craze has taken over B-Town in India! As the release day approaches, numerous celebrities are showcasing their pink ensembles on social media in homage to the fashion icon. Bhumi Pednekar, Mrunal Thakur, Sharvari Wagh, and Ananya Pandey recently posted stunning pictures on Instagram flaunting their Barbie-inspired looks. It’s impossible not to be entranced by their beauty!

Interesting, isn’t it? Well, don’t waste any time and dive into the magical pink realm of Barbieland this Friday at your nearest PVR INOX!

  • PVR INOX celebrate Oppenheimer release with Nolan Film Festival and other exciting initiatives

PVR INOX celebrate Oppenheimer release with Nolan Film Festival and other exciting initiatives

Mumbai: Christopher Nolan is a filmmaker who has created a name for himself by delivering intricate and captivating blockbusters such as Tenet and The Dark Knight Rises. His latest biographical war drama, Oppenheimer, is set to release on 21 July 2023, and there is a palpable sense of excitement and anticipation in India. Oppenheimer features Hollywood’s finest actors, including Cillian Murphy, Robert Downey Jr., Matt Damon, Emily Blunt, and Florence Pugh. The film holds a special place in the hearts of Indians as Oppenheimer was an ardent follower of the Bhagavad Gita. After the first successful atomic test during his research, he famously quoted from the scripture, “Now, I become Death, the destroyer of worlds,” a line that is also featured in the film.

PVR INOX is celebrating the release of Nolan’s masterpiece by kicking off The Nolan Film Festival from today, 17 July till Thursday, 20 July 2023. During this four-day event, PVR INOX will showcase some of Nolan’s biggest hits, such as Interstellar, Dunkirk, Inception, The Dark Knight, and The Dark Knight Rises, for the audience to enjoy. The Film Festival will pan-out across 45 cinemas in 20 cities of India.

PVR INOX has also rolled out a series of exciting consumer initiatives to celebrate the release of Oppenheimer. Patrons who catch Oppenheimer on IMAX screens between 21 July and 1 Aug will stand a chance to win a swatch of Nolan 70 MM Reel by playing an online Oppenheimer trivia game accessible by scanning the code on the screens. Additionally, those who book their IMAX tickets on the PVR app can access the special and limited Director’s Preferred seats, known for their immersive movie-watching experience. Friday, 21 July, will also be Oppenheimer Day at PVR INOX, and the film will be playing for a full 24 hours on the IMAX auditoriums of PVR ICON Phoenix Palladium at Lower Parel, INOX Megaplex at Inorbit Mall and INOX R City in Mumbai, so that fans can enjoy the movie anytime they want on the first day! The cinema chain has put digital countdown timers at seven of its cinemas across the country, which has already become popular among the Oppenheimer fans.

In a first of its kind initiative, PVR INOX deputed renowned film critic and former RJ Sucharita Tyagi to interview the entire cast of Oppenheimer at New York. The series of interviews, featuring director Nolan, and actors Cillian Murphy, Emily Hunt and Matt Damon is posted on PVR’s YouTube channel. Exciting snippets, highlighting exclusive insights and anecdotes from the celebrated talent, will be used by PVR INOX on its social media platforms for promoting the film.

Speaking on the release of Oppenheimer and the surrounding initiatives, PVR INOX Ltd. co-CEO Gautam Dutta said, “Christopher Nolan’s films are highly appreciated and enjoyed among Indian audiences, so it was only fair to bring them to the Nolan Film Festival. We are confident people will love this four-day affair of his best works like The Dark Knight Rises (I&II) and Dunkirk. A film like Oppenheimer is best watched on IMAX screens for the vibrant and immersive experience, which only gets better at a certain angle: the director’s preferred seats. We have laid out a series of other initiatives around the release to ensure that the build-up to the film is as exciting as the film itself. Judging by the high buzz around this film and Nolan’s track record, we expect Oppenheimer to be yet another megahit.”

Oppenheimer delves into the life of J. Robert Oppenheimer, an American physicist known as the ‘Father of the Atomic Bomb.’ He famously created the first atomic bomb and other nuclear weapons during WWII. The film depicts how one man’s genius and ambition radically altered the nature of war, resulting in the mass annihilation of millions of people and the ensuing public hysteria. We witness Oppenheimer’s reaction and struggle to cope with the reality of his creation, which has the potential to wipe out humanity in minutes.

  • Helen Mirren to star in Lionsgate’s upcoming theatrical ‘Golda’

Helen Mirren to star in Lionsgate’s upcoming theatrical ‘Golda’

Mumbai: Everything is fair in love and war. Or is it? Following the heart-wrenching Israeli War of 1973, Lionsgate brings to you the gripping tale of Golda as she navigates through the hardships of being a leader in a time of tragedy. Taking a deep dive into one of the most pivotal years of Israel’s history, Golda showcases the personal and professional struggles of the country’s highly controversial and only female leader. Starring Helen Mirren (who won an Oscar for her performance in The Queen) as Golda Meir, the Iron Lady of Israel, the film is set to make its theatrical release in India on 1 September. The film also stars Camille Cottin, Ellie Piercy, and Liev Schreiber in titular roles.

Talking about the real Golda Mier and her tenure as the Israeli prime minister, director Guy Nattiv said, “She will always be connected to the failure of the Yom Kippur war. Golda was the wrong person, in the wrong place, in the wrong time. She didn’t want to be a Prime Minister, but she had to take the job because no one else wanted it at that time. They pushed her to be a Prime Minister and then she was thrown into this mayhem and trying to deal with the mess. Israelis are so conflicted about her character. Now, if you look outside of Israel, and Jews outside of Israel, they see more of the romantic story of Golda who came from Milwaukee to Israel when she was a young woman, full of Zionism and a hope to help the country. She was the Iron Lady of Israel and, like Margaret Thatcher, there are some people who love her and some people who hate her.”

Helmed by Guy Nattiv and written by Nicholas Martin, the movie will be released by Lionsgate and PVRINOX Pictures.

Shujaat Saudagar’s “The Underbug” honored at Slamdance Film Festival

Mumbai: “The Underbug” is a Hindi feature film written and directed by Shujaat Saudagar, and produced by Vikesh Bhutani and Aman Mann (producer of the Oscar-nominated documentary “All That Breathes”). The film garnered tremendous recognition as it was awarded the prestigious 2023 Slamdance Breakouts Feature Grand Jury Prize.

The esteemed Slamdance Film Festival Awards ceremony took place on 21 January 2023, in Park City, Utah. The selection process involved a distinguished panel of jurors who screened the film at the award show and played a crucial role in determining the winners.

“The Underbug” is an experimental film made during the first lockdown. “It is a psychological horror film where I wanted to explore the psyche of men who are turned into tools of hate. Men who live on the fringe of society, used, abused and weaponized by their political masters, by governments, by religious leaders to divide man by religion, by region, by colour. By altering the social fabric for the personal and political ambitions of a select few.” said the writer and director, Shujaat Saudagar.

Vikesh Bhutani, the producer of “The Underbug,” expressed his thoughts, stating, “We got a great opportunity to take our film to an international platform and were overwhelmed by the heartwarming response. The themes may have stemmed from India but resonated with the many nationalities attending the film festival.”

The director and writer of the film, Shujaat Saudagar took a moment to reflect on his creative journey, stating, “The Underbug was born out of troubled times, it was difficult coping with an unseen entity, the Pandemic, the coronavirus. A bunch of us came together during the peak of the pandemic to tell a story that we believed needed to be told. And momentarily the world united against this unknown enemy. And I wondered, is this what it takes to bring us together?”

In addition to its recognition at the Slamdance Film Festival, “The Underbug” received nominations at The Moscow Film Festival – Wild Nights, Toronto Lift Off Film Festival, and the Indian Film Festival of Melbourne, further underscoring its acclaim and recognition.
