Actor Peter OToole dies after prolonged sickness

Renowned actor Peter O’Toole who hit the international scene with his 1962 film epic Lawrence of Arabia, died over the weekend in a London hospital.

He was 81. His death, which was confirmed by his agent, came after a prolonged, unspecified illness. He is survived by his children Kate O’Toole, Lorcan O’Toole, and Patricia O’Toole.

During his long career, O’Toole received eight Academy Award nominations. However, he didn’t win any. In 2003, he settled for an honorary Oscar, which he accepted with customary relish.

“Always a bridesmaid, never a bride. My foot,” he said, clutching the Oscar for lifetime achievement.

His first Oscar nomination was for his portrayal of T.E. Lawrence, the British archaeologist, soldier and adventurer who led Arab tribesmen against the Ottoman Turks during World War I. The legend that grew up around Lawrence’s exploits became a perfect creative vehicle for filmmaker David Lean.

O’Toole, who at 6-foot-2 was almost a foot taller than the enigmatic Lawrence, nevertheless seemed to capture perfectly the tortured inner life of a charismatic but conflicted rebel leader.

The film’s sublime cinematography rendered its star as a towering, gaunt Anglo-Saxon outlier who has a chiseled beauty and piercing, azure eyes. O’Toole’s acting helped make the film a classic and placed the actor in a pantheon of beloved, roguish British and Irish actors of the postwar era.

Apart from Lawrence, he received Oscar nominations for his leading roles in Becket (1964), “he Lion in Winter (1968), Goodbye, Mr. Chips (1968), The Ruling Class (1972), The Stunt Man (1980) and My Favorite Year (1982). His final Oscar nomination came in 2006, when he played an aging lothario in Venus.

Perhaps the nadir of his professional career came with a 1980 production of Macbeth that was panned so roundly it drew audiences to see how bad it was. Overwrought and hammy, his performance prompted one critic to write that Mr. O’Toole “delivers every line with a monotonous tenor bark.” Another Shakespearean actor accused Mr. O’Toole of “not trusting the author, in one of his greatest plays.”

O’Toole never fully embraced the Hollywood culture and was identified instead with a flamboyant, theatrical and hard-drinking cohort of stage and screen stars who included Richard Burton, Richard Harris and Peter Finch. O’Toole spoke with exquisite diction and careful delivery — every word seemed to have been savored.

He told The Washington Post in a 1978 interview that “my passion is language. The most satisfying thing for me is having worked with fine writers.” His voice evoked a very cultured British manner, although he was claimed by Ireland as a favorite son, and he identified himself as an Irishman. Peter Seamus O’Toole was born Aug. 2, 1932, although where is not definitively known; he said Peter Seamus O’Toole was born Aug. 2, 1932, although where is not definitively known; he said his birthplace was either Connemara in the western part of Ireland or the northern English city of Leeds, where he grew up. His father, Patrick “Spats” O’Toole, was an Irish bookmaker, and his mother, Constance Jane Eliot, a Scottish nurse.

As a teenager in the 1940s, O’Toole worked as a copy boy for an evening newspaper, but soon left and worked in the civic theater in Leeds before fulfilling his compulsory military service as a Royal Navy signalman.

His marriage to actress Sian Phillips ended in divorce. He is survived by two daughters from that marriage, Pat O’Toole and Kate O’Toole, and by his son, Lorcan O’Toole, by Karen Brown.

He later studied at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts in London and joined the Old Vic Theatre in Bristol, where he became noticed as an actor of extraordinary presence in spite of his youth and inexperience.

    Mileys Christmas fun on Twitter

While most of the entertainment industry is taking a break from their commercial activities during the festive season, teen pop sensation Miley Cyrus, whose latest Wrecking Ball video has surpassed well over 400 million views on Vevo, has in her signature way, presented herself in a rather festively explicit way!

In New York for the weekend for The Jingle Ball Tour, the singer took some time off to enjoy the snow and flashed a very naughty Christmas photo in the process!

Miley posted herself on Twitter lifting-up her top with two heart-shaped ‘Merry Christmas’ signs covering her boobs.

“Merry Christmas! Thank you NY for being one of the few states to @freethenipple,” she tweeted.

After her image sparked some negative comments Miley added a new tweet trying to explain her actions. “It’s not about getting your t**s out. It’s about equality,” she proclaimed.

The new Christmas Twitter flash is just the latest incident, following on from her performance on Friday evening at Z100’s Jingle Ball 2013 in New York where she twerked with a Christmas tree onstage.

The 21-year-old was watched by thousands whilst she shook her impertinent bottom in front of a lady dressed as the festive tree and covered in silver tinsel and baubles.
Cyrus has made Claus a very happy Santa!!

  • Hrithik-Suzanne call it quits

    Hrithik-Suzanne call it quits

MUMBAI: It was in 2010 during the shooting of Kites when the rumours of everything not being hunky-dory between Hrithik Roshan and his wife Sussanne started rolling. The actor was rumoured to be dating the film’s lead actress Barbara Mori. However, he rubbished all the rumours and said all was well.

But as unfortunate as it may sound, now an official announcement has come from Roshan that reveals that the couple are ending their 17-year long relationship. They got married on 20 December 2000. It’s an irony that the announcement has come just few days before their 13th marriage anniversary.

It reads: “Sussanne has decided to separate from me and end our 17-year relationship. This is a very trying time for the entire family and I request the media and the people to grant us our privacy at this time. I do not wish this news to disempower my fans and the people about the institution of marriage in any way. I am a firm believer in this institution and respect and honour it at the highest level…. And once again I thank my fans for all the concern and prayers for my health, my treatment is going well and I should be able to resume my life in every way very soon. Thank you.”

It was few months back during the Ganesh Visarjan puja that the tensed situation between the couple came to the fore as Sussanne wasn’t spotted at the Roshan home.

It mounted up when a few weeks later, she came to attend Roshan senior’s birthday bash from her parents home with their two sons – Hrehaan, 7 and Hridhaan, 5 and made an early exit. Apparently, by then she had already moved to her parents – Sanjay and Zarine Khan’s Juhu home. The final blow came when unlike earlier, Suzanne wasn’t seen in public with Roshan at any of the promotional events of the third installment of Krissh.

  • Evelyn Sharma to match dance steps with Arshad Warsi

Evelyn Sharma to match dance steps with Arshad Warsi

MUMBAI: Evelyn Sharma seems to have all the luck by her side. From starting out as a fashionista and graduating to Bollywood success with super hits like Nautanki Saala! and then Ranbir Kapoor-starrer Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani (YJHD), she’s now turning a new leaf in her career.

Evelyn has been signed by director Neeraj Pathak for Bhaiyyaji Superhit starring Sunny Deol, Preity Zinta and Arshad Warsi.

Pitted as the leading lady opposite Arshad, she plays a cute, sexy but traditional Indian girl. But what the actress is most excited about is matching dance steps with him. Apart from being a powerhouse performer, Arshad is well-known for being a great dancer. And Evelyn feels this gives her a chance to hone her dancing skills too. Nowadays, the girl is often spotted at a dance rehearsal hall in Andheri, Mumbai. We wonder if that has something to do with the challenge of dancing with Arshad.

Meanwhile, having bagged a role with various shades, comedy, songs, dance and all, Evelyn is glad to work with director Neeraj Pathak. “He spotted me in YJHD and invited me to his office for a meeting. He compliments me for my talent and thinks I am a quick learner. I feel honoured with the praise,” said the actress.

  • It was a gamble, okay!

    It was a gamble, okay!

MUMBAI: Jackpot is the name of the floating casino in Goa as well as the five crore jackpot at stake one big night. The motto of any gambling house is that ‘The House Always Wins’ which is to say a player may sometimes win some money but, eventually at the end of the day the house is the winner. The film also stresses on the principle in which case it is hard to understand why the casino is bent on gifting a five crore jackpot to any gambler? And when one talks of big time jackpot, what is five crore when even a TV show like Kaun Banega Crorepati offers more than that?

Naseeruddin Shah is a residual hippie in Goa who sports some odd colour long hair of the kind Indian sadhus do. He owns the casino Jackpot. Sunny Leone works for his casino and has a five-year stint as the manager of a Las Vegas casino to boast of. She may work with Shah but sleeps with Sachiin Joshi, a drifter who leads an idle Goa life; his major talent is tricks with playing cards. He is a cardsharp. Tired of his idle life, Sachiin gets an itch to make some easy money and since easy money is not really easy to make, he plans a con on Jackpot. From the look of it, everybody is planning one, Sunny as well as Shah. The idea is to outwit the rest.

So far so good but this is all you manage to gather in this film as it goes into its last few minutes and the characters themselves volunteer to tell you what it was all about. One consolation is that the film is only 92 minutes long.

    Producer: Raina Sachiin Joshi.
    Director: Kaizad Gustad.
Cast: : Naseeruddin Shah, Sachiin Joshi, Sunny Leone, Makrand Deshpande.

Just about everything in the plot is juvenile. Shah owns a casino worth crores where huge sums exchange hands while the casino is the only assured winner but he can’t raise five crores for a plot of land that is on offer. That he should want to deal with a street-side lad like Sachin at all whatever the bait makes no sense either. The film has been spread over 10 segments with each having its own title and the narration keeps jumping from present to flashback adding to the confusion.

There is nothing much to performances as Shah only makes loud gestures for acting, Leone is not even in the  film for her acting skills. Sachiin tries not to act which is wise. Direction is poor. Musically, one song, Kabhi jo badal barse…is good.

The word Jackpot has no antonym but that is what this film would be if there was one

  • Bollywood comes out in support of the LGBT community

Bollywood comes out in support of the LGBT community

MUMBAI: Everyone was in for a shock yesterday when the Supreme Court ruled that there was no constitutional room for change in Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code that holds same gender sexual relationship an offence. The Bollywood fraternity, which in the age of social media has become really vocal, especially when it comes to supporting the social causes, even this time came out to criticise the SC’s ruling. Many people from the industry started tweeting as soon as the news broke.

Section 377 of IPC makes gay sex an offence punishable with up to life imprisonment, said a bench of justices GS Singhvi and SJ Mukhopadhaya while overruling an earlier verdict by the High Court that had decriminalised same sex relationship.

Filmmaker Karan Johar tweeted: “#Sec377 is not just a violation of human rights but also makes democracy seem like a mirage in our country….”. This was even retweeted by fashion designer Manish Malhotra.

Actor Adil Hussain wrote: “Ramdev and Judiciary have forgotten the Role of Shikhandi and Brihannala in Mahabharata.Wonder what Values they are talking about!! #Sec377.”

Filmmaker Farhan Akhtar, who has been initiating many movements of late online, was upset with the ruling as well, but expressed himself in just one-liner, “The Supreme Court got it wrong today.”

Actor Richa Chadda, who has been known for her fiery and strong characters, tweeted, “The Supreme Court criminalises love, again. Sad day.”

Kabir Bedi wrote: “It’s a sad day when the Supreme Court of India does not uphold the democratic rights of sexual minorities. #Sec377 #LGBT”. He continued, “The State should stay out of the bedrooms of consenting adults. SC upholding regressive law seems bigoted. #Sec377 #LGBT.”

Even actor Anushka Sharma, didn’t hesitate to present her disappointment. She tweeted, “So disappointed with the SC (supreme court) verdict. Freedom is such a deceptive term. Rights are an ambiguous mystery.”

Singer-actor Shruti Haasan wrote, “11.12.13 a day that reminds us how blatant regressing and oppressing someone has become – plan b move bedroom to another planet and time… (It is) frightening how someone else decides how when and who you should love – basically freedom of choice isn’t legal anymore.”

  • Alia discovers the unseen India

    Alia discovers the unseen India

MUMBAI: They don’t call acting the best profession for no reason. There’s something about it that fascinates many. And one of the most important is that while donning different roles, an actor gets to learn a lot of new things. Something similar happened to Alia Bhatt while shooting for Imtiaz Ali’s Highway.

Presented by Sajid Nadiadwala and starring Alia Bhatt and Randeep Hooda, the film traverses six states of north India and captures the landscape of the different regions as it goes along. The makers have come up with Highway Diaries – short video snippets that capture the journey of the film and all the exciting experiences that the cast and crew had during its making.

The latest episode of Highway Diaries titled Sambhar Salt Pan, Alia is seen shooting for the film in a salt factory in Sambhar (Rajasthan) along with other actors of the film. Born and brought up in a city like Mumbai, the world of Sambhar where anything and everything has more than a pinch of salt was a revelation for the young star.

“Highway took me to all these amazing places that I probably wouldn’t have ever seen otherwise. Sambhar, the salt factory, was the most beautiful and the most weird experience for me. I celebrated my birthday there as well. In many ways, I think it was here that I truly started feeling like Veera (her character in the film),” said Alia in a release.
