    Saregama reports subdued results for Q3-2014

    BENGALURU: Saregama India Limited, which claims to be the custodian of over half the music ever recorded in India, reported lower numbers for Q3-2014 as compared to the immediate trailing and year ago quarters, despite its film and television serials segment recording a 15.6 per cent y-o-y  and 5.1 per cent q-o-q growth in operating revenue. The company received lower licence fees and paid lesser royalty fees in Q3-2014 as compared to the previous and corresponding last year.  At the same time, its cost of production of films, television serials and portal went up. 

     

    Overall, the company’s net total income from operations (net of excise duty) for Q3-2014 was 16.4 per cent lower at Rs 43.02 crore as compared to the Rs 51.43 crore in Q3-2013, and 5.5 per cent lower than the Rs 45.53 crore in Q2-2014. During 9M-2014, Saregama’s net total income fell 1.9 per cent to Rs 124.36 crore from Rs 126.74 crore in 9M-2013. For FY the, net total income reported was Rs 174.69 crore.

     

    Saregama’s Q3-2014 net profit at Rs 1.02 crore was a little more than one-fifth (20.61 per cent) of Rs 4.95 crore in Q3-2013 and less than half (about 40 per cent) of the Rs 2.49 crore in Q2-2014. For the nine month period ended December 31, 2014, the company’s net profit  was 37.6 per cent lower at Rs 5.34 crore as compared to the Rs 8.56 crore in 9M-2013. For FY 2013, the company reported PAT of Rs 10.88 crore. 

     

    Let us look at the other Q3-2014 figures reported by Saregama 

     

    Saregama received 17.7 per cent lower licensing fees at Rs 24.67 crore in Q3-2014 as compared to the Rs 29.96 crore in Q3-2013 and 15.2 per cent lower than the Rs 29.08 crore in Q2-2014. In 9M-2014, licensing fee income was Rs 76.71 crore, which was 0.58 per cent more than the Rs 76.27 crore in 9M-2013. For FY 2013, Saregama had licensing fee income of Rs 104.98 crore. 

     

    The company reports revenue from two segments – Music and Film and Television Serials (Production). 

     

    Music segment reported 29 per cent fall in revenue for Q3-2014 to Rs 26.13 from Rs 36.82 crore in Q3-2013, but reported an increase of 34.3 per cent from Rs 19.46 crore in Q2-2014. During 9M-2014, the Music segment’s revenue was down 16.6 per cent to Rs 80.68 crore from Rs 96.79 crore in 9M-2013. For FY 2013, the segment reported revenue of Rs 131.70 crore.

     

    Music segment’s operating profit in Q3-2014 at Rs 8.57 crore was down 25 per cent from Rs 11.42 crore in Q3-2013 and was just 2.5 per cent more than the Rs 8.36 crore in Q2-2014. In 9M-2014, operating profit was 17.3 per cent lower at Rs 26.24 crore as compared to the Rs 31.73 crore in 9M-2013. For FY 2013, Music segment reported revenue of Rs 51.33 crore. 

     

    The company’s Production segment reported operating revenue of Rs 16.89 crore, which was 15.6 per cent more than the Rs 14.61 crore in Q3-2013 and 5.1 per cent more than the Rs 16.07 crore in Q2-2014. The segment’s 9M-2014 operating revenue at Rs 43.68 crore was 45.4 per cent more than the Rs 29.95 crore in 9M-2013. For FY 2013, the segment reported operating income of Rs 42.99 crore.

     

    Production segment reported operating profit at Rs 0.69 crore as compared to an operating loss of Rs 1.28 crore y-o-y and was a little more than a fourth (about 27 per cent) of the Rs 2.54 crore operating profit in Q2-2014. For 9M-2014, the segment reported an operating profit of Rs 3.6 crore as compared to an operating loss of Rs 9.70 crore in 9M-2013. Saregama’s Production segment had reported an operating loss of Rs 11.49 crore in FY 2013. 

     

    The company’s Q3-2014 Total expense at Rs 41.70 crore was 12.4 per cent lower than the Rs 47.59 crore in Q3-2014 and was 4.4 per cent lower than the Rs 43.6 crore in Q2-2014. During the nine month period of the current year, Total expense was up by 0.35 per cent to Rs 119.37 crore from Rs 118.95 crore in 9M-2013. For FY 2013, the company’s Total expense was Rs 167.8 crore. 

     

    As mentioned above, Saregama’s cost of production of Films, Television Serials and portal in Q3-2014 was higher by 10.5 per cent at Rs 14.23 crore as compared to the Rs 12.88 crore in Q3-2013 and was 2.9 per cent more than the Rs 13.83 crore in Q2-2014. For 9M-2014, this expense head at Rs 37.03 crore was 32.6 per cent more than the Rs 27.92 crore in 9M-2013. For FY 2013, Saregama’s cost of production of Films, Television Serials and portal was Rs 39.55 crore. 

     

    The company’s Royalty expense in Q3-2014 was lower by 29.6 per cent at Rs 3.49 crore as compared to the Rs 4.96 crore in Q3-2013 and was less than half 42 per cent of the Rs 8.31 crore in Q-2014. In 9M-2014, Saregama’s royalty expense at Rs 15.24 crore was 29 per cent more than the Rs 11.81 crore in 9M-2013. For FY 2013, the royalty expense was Rs 15.64 crore. 

     

    Saregama’s advertising and sales promotion expense at Rs 2.17 crore in Q3-2014 was less than half (44 per cent) of the Rs 4.92 crore in Q3-2013 and 45.6 per cent more than the Rs 1.49 crore in Q2-2014. In 9M-2014, the company spent Rs 5.87 crore towards Ad expense, which was  (44.6) per cent lower than the Rs 10.59 crore in 9M-2013. In FY 2013, the company spent Rs 14.42 crore towards this expense head.

    ‘The Monuments Men’ team get an access to Da Vinci’s ‘The Last Supper’

    MUMBAI: The team of The Monuments Men got an unprecedented access to photograph the cast of the movie in front of one of the world’s greatest art masterpieces – Leonardo Da Vinci’s The Last Supper.

     

    This art masterpiece was in danger of being lost during WWII and was rescued by the Monuments Men as depicted in the film, so there is a direct correlation to the film. These images have been shot exclusively for Fox by Italian photographer Gianmarco Chieregato.

     

    It became possible because of the cooperation among the Italian Ministry for Culture and Tourism, the Milan’s Monuments, Fine Arts and Landscape Department, and Twentieth Century Fox, the film distribution company.

     

    “The Magificent Seven” in the snapshot are: the director, screenwriter, producer and star of the film George Clooney and co-stars Matt Damon, Jean Dujardin, John Goodman, Bill Murray, Bob Balaban, and Dimitri Leonidas. 

     

    The Last Supper by Leonardo Da Vinci is the set of one of the opening scenes of the film that will release on 21 February, because the bombing that endangered Leonardo’s masterpiece strongly contributed to the decision to set up the Monuments Men, a group of art critics, museum curators, and archivists, who towards the end of the Second World War, saved thousands of artworks from bombings, pilfering, looting and Nazi barbarity.

    MUMBAI: At London, on Sunday 16 February, at the EE British Academy Film Awards (BAFTA), 12 Years a Slave was named Best Film with Chiwetel Ejiofor (Dancing On the Edge) winning Leading Actor. The Awards were hosted by Stephen Fry (Alice in Wonderland, Sherlock Holmes: a Game of Shadows) and held at London’s Royal Opera House.  Gravity won six awards: Outstanding British Film, Original Music, Cinematography, Sound and Special Visual Effects with Alfonso Cuarón (Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban) winning for Director.

     

    American Hustle won three BAFTA Awards: Original Screenplay for Eric Warren Singer (The International) and David O. Russell (The Fighter), Make Up & Hair, and Supporting Actress for Jennifer Lawrence (The Silver Linings Playbook). Production Design and Costume Design were awarded to The Great Gatsby.

     

    Leading Actress was presented to Cate Blanchett (Elizabeth, The Monuments Men) for playing the title role in Blue Jasmine – her third BAFTA win – and in his feature film debut Barkhad Abdi won Supporting Actor for Captain Phillips. Director and Writer Kieran Evans received the award for Outstanding Debut by a British Writer, Director or Producer for his first feature film Kelly + Victor.

     

    Adapted Screenplay was awarded to Jeff Pope (Mrs. Biggs) and Steve Coogan (Alan Partridge) for Philomena, Steve Coogan also produced and starred in the film. The Great Beauty won the award for Film Not in the English Language and the BAFTA for Editing went to Rush.

     

    The Act of Killing received the Documentary award and Frozen took home the BAFTA for Animated Film. The EE Rising Star Award, voted for by the public, was presented to Will Poulter (The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader, The Millers). Sleeping with the Fishes won the British Short Animation award and the British Short Film award was presented to Room 8.

     

    Director Peter Greenaway whose films include The Draughtsman’s Contract and The Cook, The Thief, His Wife & Her Lover received the award for Outstanding British Contribution to Cinema. The Fellowship, the highest honour the Academy can bestow, was presented to Helen Mirren (The Queen) by HRH The Duke of Cambridge.

    Solo release ‘Gunday’ makes the most at BO

    MUMBAI: Gunday made the most of its combination of two young heroes with growing popularity, its music and Valentine’s Day release date to take a bumper Friday at the box office with a figure of 16.12 crore. Being a solo release also helped. The box office levelled out on Saturday with 12.63, rising again on Sunday to 15.18. The first weekend tally of 43.93 already qualifies the film as another hit for Yash Raj Films.

     

    Hasee Toh Phasee with a weekend of 15.75 crore remained steady on the lower side during the week to collect 25.35 in its first week.

     

    Of the three other releases, Babloo Happy Hai, Ya Rab and Heartless, only the last one managed to reach near one crore mark.

     

    Jai Ho added 3.7 crore in its third week taking its three week total to 104.9 crore.

     

    Yaariyan, coming to the end of its run, added 30 lakh in the fifth week to take its five week tally to 32.95 crore.

     

    Dedh Ishqiya has added 30 lakh in its fifth week to take its five week tally to 26.25 crore.

    Two Indian movies nominated for the 8th Asian Film Awards

    NEW DELHI: The Lunchbox by Ritesh Batra may have failed to make it to the Academy nominations but it figures prominently in the nominations for the Asian version of the Oscars — the 8th Asian Film Awards.

     

    The awards are to be presented on 27 March at a ceremony to be held at the City of Dreams casino resort in Macau, and the nominations were announced in Hong Kong over the weekend.

     

    The Lunchbox has been nominated for the best film award and Ritesh Batra has been nominated for the best screenplay while actor Irrfan Khan is in the list of best actor awards.

     

    The only other Indian film to make it to the nominations is Bhag Milka Bhag by Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra, the music composers of which – Shankar Ehsaan Loy – have been nominated for best music category.

     

    Renowned filmmaker Wong Kar-wai’s The Grandmaster topped with eleven nominations including best film and best director out of 14 categories. The highly stylised martial arts drama opened the Berlin festival this time last year.

     

    After being organised by the Hong Kong International Film Festival Society Limited (HKIFF) for the past seven years, this year’s award is being organised by the new Asian Film Awards Academy (AFAA), a combined effort between the Hong Kong International Film Festival, the Busan International Film Festival (BIFF), and the Tokyo International Film Festival (TIFF).

     

    Competing closely with Wong Kar-wai is Korean director Bong Joon Ho’s sci-fi fantasy Snowpiercer with five nominations including best film and best director.

     

    A total of 28 films from ten countries and regions have been nominated this year from over a thousand eligible films. Hong Kong films have the most nominations with a total of 19 shared between The Grandmaster (11 nominations), Rigor Mortis (4 nominations), Young Detective Dee: Rise of the Sea Dragon (3 nominations) and The Way We Dance (1 nomination).

     

    Films from South Korea and Japan are tied at 14 nominations each. In addition to the five recognitions for Snowpiercer, the nominated South Korean films are Cold Eyes (4 nominations), The Attorney (3 nominations), Mr. Go (1 nomination) and The Face Reader (1 nomination).

     

    The 14 nominations for films from Japan are shared between The Great Passage (3 nominations), Like Father, Like Son (3 nominations), Why Don’t You Play in Hell? (3 nominations), Tokyo Family (2 nominations), Backwater (1 nomination), and The Ravine of Goodbye (1 nomination).

     

    HKIFF’s chairman Wilfred Wong is Chairman of the AFAA committee, which also includes BIFF’s Lee Yong-kwan and TIFF’s Shiina Yasushi.

     

    Director Peter Chan is serving as this year’s jury president, with Donnie Yen joining as a “celebrity jury” member. The two are joined by the Philippines’ Ronald Arguelles, Indonesia’s John Badalu, Japan’s Ishizaaka Kenji, France’s Christian Jeune, Singapore’s Eric Khoo, South Korea’s Lee Yong-kwan, Thailand’s Kong Rithdee, Taiwan’s Wen Tien-hsiang as well as Hong Kong’s Jacob Wong and Patricia Cheng.

     

    “Each industry, although successful commercially, is becoming more and more localised, catering to the taste of local audiences. As a result there are fewer channels for crossover distribution outside local markets. I think AFA is not only important in its celebration of Asian film and filmmakers, but an event that can bring Asian films together,” says Chan.

     

    For the first time this year, the award ceremony has been moved to a venue outside of Hong Kong, to a casino resort in neighbouring Macau. While the ceremony is traditionally held on the first day of the Hong Kong FilMart, this year’s ceremony will be held on 27 March, the final day of this year’s film market.

    MUMBAI: Bollywood’s King Khan – Shah Rukh Khan – is in Malaysia for his concert ‘Temptation Reloaded’.

     

    Speaking at the ‘Temptation Reloaded’ press conference at the Ritz Carlton last afternoon said, “It’s always a sense of pride for me whenever I come to Malaysia. I often feel that I have never left home in fact. It’s a great feeling to be back to such lovely people once again.”

     

    Said to be the biggest Bollywood concert production, ‘Temptation Reloaded’ offers all the music, love and drama of the Bollywood silver screen together with Shah Rukh Khan’s beautiful leading ladies Madhuri Dixit and Rani Mukherji today at Stadium Merdeka. Apart from the big stars, our very own desi rapper Yo Yo Honey Singh will also be performing along with the team.

    Despite injury, pain and wounds, SRK is all set to rehearse and then perform in Malaysia. Shah Rukh Khan tweeted, “On way to Malaysia for Temptations. Little in pain but between Madhuri rani yo yo arijit and the team we will entertain u well.”

     

    The concert is in conjunction with the ongoing Visit Malaysia Year 2014 celebrations. Shah Rukh Khan also said at the do that it was his “duty” to promote the country as a tourism destination.

    MUMBAI: Academy Award winner Jennifer Lawrence (The House at the End of the Street) will return to present at the 86th Annual Academy Awards this year, show producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron announced today in a press statement. Lawrence took home the golden statuette for her lead performance in Silver Linings Playbook. She is nominated this year for her supporting role in American Hustle. Previously Lawrence was nominated for her leading role in Winter’s Bone. Her other credits include X-Men: First Class and The Hunger Games series. 

     

    Awards for outstanding film achievements of 2013 will be presented on Sunday, 2 March, at the Dolby Theatre at Hollywood & Highland Center, Los Angeles and televised live on American Broadcasting Network (ABC). The Oscars, produced by Craig Zadan and Neil Meron, will be televised live in more than 225 countries and territories worldwide.

     

    The Oscars, hosted by Ellen DeGeneres, will air in India on Monday, 3 March live on Star Movies at 5:30 am with a repeat telecast at 8:00 pm.

    BENGALURU: Tips Industries Limited’s film distribution and production segment has reported operating profit of Rs 7.14 crore in Q3-2014, after losses in the first two quarters, helping the company report a net profit of Rs 6.38 crore in the third quarter.

     

    The film segment had last reported operating profit of Rs 13.95 crore in Q4-2013. In Q2-2014, the film segment reported operating loss of Rs 19.6 crore, which completely wiped the operating profit generated by Tips Audio segment and resulted in a net loss of Rs 22.32 crore for the company.

     

    In Q3-2013, the film segment had reported operating loss of Rs 2.08 crore, while the company had reported a PAT of Rs 0.63 crore. 

     

    The company’s audio products segment also reported operating profit of Rs 5.47 crore in the current quarter, which was 17.6 per cent lower than the Rs 6.63 crore in Q3-2013 and 55.6 per cent more than the Rs 3.51 crore in the immediate trailing quarter.

     

    Let us look at the other figures reported by Tips for Q3-2014 

     

    Total operating income in Q3-2014 at Rs 43.59 crore was 5.2 times the Rs 8.68 crore operating income in Q3-2013 and 1.4 per cent more than the Rs 42.99 crore in Q2-2014. 

     

    Total expense for Q3-2014 at Rs 34.52 crore was 5.22 times the Rs 6.62 crore in Q3-2013 and 45 per cent lower than the Rs 62.67 crore in Q2-2014. 

     

    The company’s major cost head is cost of production/distribution of films. The company spent Rs 28.38 crore towards this head in Q3-2014, which was 23.44 times the Rs 1.21 crore in the corresponding quarter of the previous year and (47) per cent lower than the Rs 53.44 crore in Q2-2014.

     

    Finance cost of Rs 3.04 crore for Q3-2013 was 2.59 times the Rs 1.18 crore in Q3-2013 and 2.1 per cent more than the Rs 2.98 crore in Q2-2013. 

     

    Tips audio segment operating income for Q3-2014 at Rs 7.08 crore was (15.6) per cent less than the Rs 8.39 crore in Q3-2013 9.2 per cent more than the Rs 6.48 crore in Q2-2014. 

     

    The company’s film segment reported income of Rs 36.5075 crore, almost the same as the Rs 36.5085 crore in the immediate trailing quarter. This segment had reported no income in Q3-2013.

    MUMBAI: This is the final review in a 10-part series by Indiantelevision.com on the books that are being adapted into Hollywood movies in the year 2014.

    The Fault in Our Stars – John Green

    “You gave me forever in numbered days, and I can’t tell you how grateful I am for that.”

    The Fault in Our Stars follows Hazel Grace Lancaster, who diagnosed with Stage IV thyroid cancer at 12, was prepared to die until, at 14, a medical miracle shrunk the tumors in her lungs… for now. Two years post the medical miracle, sixteen-year-old Hazel is post-everything else too; post-high school, post-friends and post-normalcy. And even though she could live for a long time, Hazel lives strapped to an oxygen tank, the tumors sparsely kept at bay with a constant chemical assault.

    Enter Augustus “Gus” Waters. A match made at Cancer Kid Support Group, Augustus is gorgeous, in remission, and interested in Hazel, something that has taken Hazel completely by surprise. Being with Augustus is both an unexpected destination and a long-needed journey, pushing Hazel to re-think how the stereotypical vows taken at wedding of sickness and health, life and death, will completely rewrite her story.

    “Sometimes you read a book and it fills you with this weird evangelical zeal and you become convinced that the shattered world will never be put back together unless and until all living humans read that book.” When Hazel Grace Lancaster said that, millions of readers agreed with her hook line and sinker. What with a raking of 4.50/5 of 5,29,985 ratings on Goodreads and Booklist calling it Green’s best and most ambitious novel to date, The Fault in Our Stars is known to stand out for its “ironic sense of humour, melancholic realism and quirky philosophy which strikes an endearing chord with the readers”.

    In January 2012, Fox 2000, a division of 20th Century Fox, optioned the rights to adapt the novel into a feature film. The film stars Golden Globe Award nominee Shailene Woodley (The Descendents, The Secret Life of an American Teenager) as Hazel Grace Lancaster, while newcomer Ansel Elgort (Carrie, Divergent) stars as Augustus Waters sparking an interesting chemistry between the two characters. Golden Globe Award winner Laura Dern (Enlightened), Scream Award nominee Sam Trammel (True Blood) and Academy Award nominee Willem Dafoe (Spiderman) round up the cast in the film.

    MUMBAI: Gunday is a story based in 1970s and 80s. And, in keeping with the era, the story is also what was called mass masala in those days. What is new about it? Well, after seeing a lineup of films with Delhi background, this has Kolkata as the backdrop.

    Ranveer Singh and Arjun Kapoor are two orphaned refugee kids from Bangladesh who join the tide of other refuges and enter a refugee camp in Bengal. Wanting to cash in on their innocence, an officer and a tout decide to use them as conduits to transport guns outside the camp. When the officer gets the urge for a woman and finds none in the camp, he decides to use one of the two boys. This leads to the boys committing their first crime as the officer is shot dead. They make their escape on a goods train carrying coal and come to Kolkata.

    While doing odd jobs, they dream big, which of course, is not easy to achieve unless one gets into illegal dealings. They see the use of coal all around and think of the wagon train they travelled in and decide to steal from wagons and sell coal at half the market price. It is the 1980s now and the lads have grown up and graduated to stealing entire trainloads of coal instead of just a few kilos, in the process killing the earlier don and his whole gang. With that materialises the car and the home they dreamt of all along. The boys are more than blood brothers, so inseparable that they even share the same bed!

    The two soon start other businesses and even have a logo designed for their ventures: BB (for Bala and Bikram, the screen names). While they have been busy building an empire and establishing themselves as the most feared dons of Kolkata, the police chief is busy collecting a horde of files on their crimes. As the duo looks unstoppable, the chief hands over the case to one cop who can stop them – Irrfan Khan. But they remain unperturbed as even with so many files, the police had no proof or witnesses so far. Irrfan takes on the onus to collect proof against them. He starts his job by planting a mole around them.

    The duo has financed a night club and gets the privilege of inaugurating the club. There they set their eyes on Priyanka Chopra, the club’s star performer. Both fall in love with her instantly. Two men in love with same woman, just the situation that is enough to put their friendship to the test. Circumstances are created whereby not only the friendship is broken but now the friends for life are ready to kill each other. The enmity starts with a no-holds-barred fistfight and later leads to the use of guns.

    As the film gets into the latter parts post interval, things become predictable. The surprises don’t surprise the viewer.

    With few characters to carry it, the film is too lengthy at 153 minutes. It could have been shorter. With a loose script, the direction is copybook, offering no sparks of genius. Kolkata locations are exploited well. The film’s music works to its advantage with three songs having popular appeal in Asalaam- e-ishqum…, Jashn- e- ishq…… and Tune maari entriyaan and has helped the film get a better opening. The lead actors, Ranveer and Arjun are not really known for histrionics but having nothing negative against their names so far, they draw the young crowd. However, they needed a younger girl to fall in love with rather than Priyanka whom one would consider in the senior league. Irrfan and Saurabh Shukla are good as usual.

    Gunday has had a good opening all over (Delhi, NCR and UP affected a bit earlier in the day due to rains). With solo release as an advantage and its two young heroes, the film has everything working for it at the box office.
