    Good biopics can be made with good actors: Rakeysh Mehra

    MUMBAI: He may be getting entirely positive response for the “biopic” he made on sprinter Milkha Singh’s life but filmmaker Rakeysh Omprkash Mehra believes that a film can’t be a biopic. He says that a film can always be an “inspired by a true life piece” which he believes even Bhaag Milkha Bhaag is as it isn’t telling the story of Singh from starting to end. “It’s rather telling the stories of his life that led him to become Milkha Singh,” said Mehra while talking during the session – “From Real Life Heroes to Reel Life Heroes: Biopics Inspiring Generations” on the first day of FICCI Frames 2014.

     

    Also present at the session was Farhan Akhtar who has received rave reviews for his performance as Milkha Singh, while it was being anchored by CNN-IBN Entertainment Editor Rajeev Masand.

     

    Mehra, when quizzed if filmmakers take certain liberties and tweak the life story while filming a biopic, he remarked: “When you tell a story, you have your own interpretation. Like in BMB, we didn’t follow Singh’s life in chronological order rather we started the story from an incident that would transform his life.” Mehra believes that storytellers have to be “morally” correct while telling stories.

     

    While talking about the most important aspect of making a film on a person’s life, Farhan said that it is very important to come down to that one lesson of the person’s life from which the audiences can draw an inspiration. “The writing is another important aspect,” says Farhan.

     

    In the same vein, Mehra says that it’s the actors, especially the one playing the title role who can put across the story in the best possible way. “It is important for the actors to get the feelings correct and the essence of the movie out,” he said.

     

    Mehra, now wants to make a movie on the life of Guru Dutt and for the research he thinks that more than studying the life of the person, it is important to understand the situation in which that person lived and grew to become who he was. “It’s very important to understand the time in which the person lived,” said Mehra, adding that he is even studying the life of Sahir Ludhianvi.

    Sony will sell TV and film content via Comcast’s Xfinity

    MUMBAI: Comcast, the largest cable company and home internet service provider in the United States on 11 March announced that it has signed an agreement with Sony Pictures Home Entertainment (SPHE) to sell the studio’s titles through the Xfinity On Demand – the digital store for Xfinity, the company’s rebranded trademark for triple play services in Comcast’s largest markets including the company’s digital cable, cable Internet access and cable telephone services and radio.

     

    In the coming weeks, Xfinity TV customers will be able to purchase Sony Pictures movies and TV shows to own and access any time, any where, on any device, often before the DVD release.

     

    The Sony Pictures library is a terrific addition to Comcast’s rapidly expanding offering of hit films and TV shows available for purchase. Comcast Cable Senior Vice President of Content Acquisition Michael Schreiber said in a press statement, “The response to the digital store has been encouraging and tells us our customers love the flexibility and ease of purchasing content directly from Xfinity On Demand to watch when and where they want it.”

     

    “Sony Pictures is pleased that this agreement brings significant titles to Comcast customers,” said SPHE President Man Jit Singh.  “We deeply value our relationship with Comcast and look forward to working closely with them to meet the needs of all audiences.”

     

    Among the first titles available for purchase will be the multi-Academy Award nominated American Hustle which will be available to own digitally on March 11. 

     

    Other Sony Pictures movie and TV titles that will be available for purchase in the coming weeks include the critically-acclaimed TV series Breaking Bad, as well as popular movies such as Captain Phillips, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2, The Amazing Spiderman and 21 Jump Street.

     

    Comcast customers have the ability to purchase movies and television shows – often weeks before they are available to rent or purchase on Blu-ray and DVD – and store them seamlessly in the cloud. Their content can be enjoyed anywhere, anytime, on their TV, PC or mobile devices. Purchased titles are added to customers’ On Demand menus which are easily accessible on the TV, online or via the Xfinity On Demand Purchases app.

     

    The Comcast catalog now includes content from FOX, Lionsgate, NBCUniversal, Sony Pictures and Warner Bros.

    MUMBAI: India’s first online digital channel, Trendspotters.tv has entered into an alliance with Mukta Arts as their online channel partner for their forthcoming production – Kaanchi – The Unbreakable. This will be the channel’s first ever film association as an online digital channel partner. In accordance with the treaty, Trendspotters.tv shall be associated with the film for special promotional activities of the film in March and April. The film is scheduled to hit the cinemas on 25 April 2014.

     

    Trendspotters.tv founder Kunal Kishore Sinha wants to engage the audience with fresh developments in the world of entertainment. “Bollywood being a much loved genre of films among our target audience, collaboration with the production house that has given some of the biggest hits of the industry is indeed a significant one.     MUMBAI: Known for choosing intriguing topics as the subjects of his films, filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt created a furore in the 80s when he made Arth – a coming of age movie that was considered “too bold” for that time.

     

    Now, the filmmaker who has had successful runs with his past theatrical productions like The Last Salute and Trial of Errors with Sandiip Kapur (promodome films) adapted the film for the stage.

     

    Arth – The Play was staged at Sriram Center, Mandi House in the capital over the weekend which was attended by the director himself. Bhatt was seen interacting with and encouraging the artists.

     

    The play was directed by Priyanka Pathak, a graduate in ‘Theater Design and Direction’ from National School of Drama (NSD), who has worked with eminent theater personalities from India and abroad.

     

    On the occasion Mahesh Bhatt said, “We all borrow from life but not everybody achieves results quite as cauterizing.”

     

    Delhi-based actor Imran Zahid, who earlier essayed the role of Muntadar Al Zaidi in The Last Salute and of journalist Rehan in Trial of Errors played the lead role. Starring alongside him was Padmashree C.R., an NSD pass out who is currently working at Kingdom of Dreams as an actress in its production Zangoora and Moon Moon Singh, who graduated from the National NSD in 2011 with a specialization in acting.

    BBC Films, Shine Pictures acquire film rights to ‘The Farm’

    MUMBAI: BBC Films and Shine Pictures, the film division of Elisabeth Murdoch’s Shine Group, have bought the rights to psychological thriller The Farm, the latest novel penned by Tom Rob Smith.

     

    Smith’s latest book is set in London and Sweden and tells the tale of a boy who believes his parents are living a peaceful life on a farm in rural Sweden. He gets a call from his father telling him his mother has escaped from a mental hospital shortly after being committed. Then his mother calls and asks him to allow her to give her side of the story.

     

    It will be produced by Shine’s head of film, Ollie Madden, with Christine Langan exec producing for BBC Films.

     

    Smith’s Child 44 trilogy has sold more than four million copies worldwide, the first of which has been made as a film directed by Daniel Espinosa starring Tom Hardy and Noomi Rapace. It is due for release this year.

     

    Smith also created the five-part BBC-backed miniseries London Spy, which will air in 2015.

     

    Shine Pictures and the public broadcaster’s movie division previously worked together on Salmon Fishing In the Yemen.

    MUMBAI: Much was expected from the Madhuri- Juhi starrer Gulaab Gang but the film turned out to be just another good vs evil story where women do the stunts otherwise done by guys. The film was below average during its opening weekend and will only go down further as the week progresses. The film managed to collect Rs 7.1 crore during its first weekend as the word spread about poor content.

     

    Total Siyapaa, starring Ali Zafar and Yami Gautam, is rejected outright and may face discontinuation from many cinemas mid-week. The film collected just about Rs 3.5 crore in its opening weekend.

     

    Queen has been appreciated as a lighthearted fun film about a ‘ditched at the mandap’ girl who decides to explore the places alone which, she would have otherwise been to with her husband. The film has grown each day during the weekend and is expected to do steady business as the week progresses. Though the opening day collections of the film were low – with positive word of mouth – the collections doubled on Saturday and improved by a huge margin on Sunday. The film’s weekend collection stood at Rs 10.15 crore.

     

    Shaadi Ke Side Effects bringing together the pair of Farhan Akhtar and Vidya Balan struggles through its first week to collect Rs 30.2 crore. The film has drawn much flak from the viewers.

     

    Gunday has added about Rs 2 crore in its third week to take its four week total to Rs 78.4 crore.

     

    Hasee Toh Phasee has collected Rs 40 lakh in its fourth week taking its four week total to Rs 35.5 crore.

    MUMBAI: The latest motion capture animated motion picture adaptation of Edgar Rice Burrough’s beloved Tarzan will be released in India by PVR Pictures on 18 April.

     

    Commenting on the release of Tarzan, PVR president Kamal Gianchandani, states, “Tarzan is a family entertainer set to release in times when animated movies are the toast of the season. The story’s universal appeal coupled with state of the art special effects will undoubtedly win over Indian fans. We feel privileged to maintain our endeavor to bring the best of international titles to India.”

     

    The film features the vocal talents of Kellan Lutz (The Twilight Saga) as Tarzan, Spencer Locke (Resident Evil), Jaime Ray Newman (Mind Games), Mark Deklin (Devious Maids) and Trevor St. Johns (One Life to Live) and is directed by Reinhard Klooss (Animals United).

     

    The story of Tarzan, the ape-like protagonist begins with an expedition in the remote African jungle where in an unfortunate series of events, John Greystoke and his wife are killed in a helicopter crash while investigating a mysterious meteorite site. Only their young son J.J., nicknamed Tarzan, survives. A group of gorillas discover the boy in the wreckage and take him in as their own. Tarzan grows up learning the harsh laws of the jungle for nearly a decade until he encounters another human being – the courageous and beautiful young Jane Porter. It is love at first sight. But things get dangerous when William Clayton, who travels to Africa with Jane under false pretense, reveals his true – and greedy – intentions. Tarzan, now a man like no other, must use all his jungle instincts and intellect to protect his home and defend the woman he loves.

    MUMBAI: There are a whole lot of enthusiastic new filmmakers who want to be launched and they are often impressed by a local story, episode or a character that they think, it is a subject apt for a film. But biopics are not accepted in India generally. Even a film like Gandhi only just managed to scrape through. The others, whether on Nehru, Bose, Patel or Ambedkar have been box office disasters.

    The story of Gulaab Gang emanates from a real-life UP character, Sampat Pal Devi, who commandeers a gang of women adorned in pink saris. The gang’s agenda is to get justice for the poor ill-treated women of the area. The makers deny that the story is based on the life of Sampat Pal Devi and even run a slide at the beginning to the effect, but the similarities of not only the basic concept but even the events and incidents are the kinds Devi dealt with. In which case, coincidences to a real life character abound in this film.

    Madhuri Dixit is beaten black and blue by her step mother even as her father looks on. But she is determined to learn to read and write. Next thing you know, Madhuri has suddenly turned into a middle-aged woman who runs this gang-cum-NGO described as Gulaab Gang. Her campus looks like one from a Bruce Lee Kung Fu film teaching a bunch of Chinese students the art of self-defence, except that here there are pink-sari-clad women trying their hands on lathi wielding.

    In a poorly conceived script, nobody seems to care for Madhuri and her pink brigade or seems oblivious of it because the crimes against women abound in her region! Her reputation is not enough; every time, she has to demonstrate the power of her lathi brigade! After a couple of demos to establish the might of Gulaab Gang, the routine sets in. The film proceeds to show the same politicians vs police vs ordinary citizen saga which finds its roots in post emergency antiestablishment era of filmmaking.

    It is time to pit Madhuri against her bete noire, Juhi Chawla. She is an overambitious widow of a politician with dubious credentials. She is a well established leader doing very well for herself and her party. Yet she decides to cross swords with Madhuri for no apparent reason. It is only one of the incidents of several for which there is no explanation. Things happen with no reason. The film loses its viewer every few minutes.

    While Madhuri and Juhi are pitted against each other for nothing, the usual caricatures hanging around a politician and well-meaning Taus hanging around Madhuri abound.

    Except for using real life incidents from Sampat’s life, the film has nothing original to offer.  These incidents, which needed to be cemented together to make this into an interesting narration is grossly missing. The direction is shoddy when not amateur; the director has no clue as to his medium or the theme. Dialogue is poor. Editing could have worked to halve the film’s length. The use of music is pretentious with little relevance. Madhuri tries to portray a combination of Santokben Jadeja (Vinay Shukla’s Godmother) and Dhankor Ba (Supriya Pathak in Ram Leela); what is she, a social worker or a don? Juhi is a poor version of her former self.

    Gulaab Gang is an arduous watch; a punishment to sit through.

    Queen: Marry Go Round

    Queen is a coming of age movie. While we keep making the odd coming-of-age hero-oriented film now and then, their scripts remain half-baked. Queen is about a girl on the verge of her marriage who gets a second chance to see the world and come out of her cocoon.

    Kangana Ranaut is Rani and her boyfriend has dubbed her queen. Kangana is from a traditional Punjabi halwai family leading a disciplined life. She is the obedient, home-to-college/college-to-home type. Rajkummar Rao, the son of a family friend, is besotted with her simple beauty and starts chasing her. Since the families know each other, a marriage date is soon fixed.

    Cast: Kangana Ranaut, Rajkummar Rao, Lisa Haydon.

    Rajkummar is now a foreign-returned groom, having just got back from finishing his education in London. A couple of days before the marriage date, his foreign experience catches up with him. He does not want to marry Kangana anymore; she does not seem his type. He breaks the news to Kangana while his folks do so to her parents.

    Kangana is devastated. Any girl from a traditional family who has known only one man in her life, her groom to be, would be. After spending a couple of days locked up in her room, she emerges to face the world. She has the ticket and the visa to visit Paris, the trip was planned as her honeymoon trip and she decides to make it a solo honeymoon trip.

    A shy and scared Kangana discovers herself in this strange land with a language she does not understand. She befriends the hotel waitress, a single mother, Lisa Haydon, who has some Indian genes in her and can mutter some Hindi. After spending a few days in Paris, Lisa packs her off to Amsterdam. The travel, she feels, will help Kangana and help change her outlook.

    It is time for Rajkummar to miss Kangana and he is back on her spur. He wants to rekindle the romance and even feels jealous when he sees her in the company of other men. But Kangana is in no hurry. She wants to complete her tour. Decisions about life can always be taken at leisure.

    Queen is a simple but nice story about traditions vs breaking the shackles. Foreign locations make it a bit more watchable. The film rests solely on the shoulders of Kangana and she does justice to her role. Rajkummar does not fit the romantic hero any which way you look at it; not even if you think of a middle class family. The supporting cast is apt. Songs are well choreographed. Direction is good.

    Queen is a watchable film but suffers due to face value and exams. It will get praises but little from the box office.

    Total Siyapaa: Total Waste

    Total Siyapaa is an idea worth exploring. It is about an independent-minded Indian Punjabi girl falling in love with a Pakistani Punjabi boy in a neutral land that is England. Alas, Total Siyapaa may have the initial idea, but the film fails to develop into something more substantial and falls flat on execution.

    Yaami Gautam is taking her Pakistani boyfriend, Ali Zafar, home to meet her parents, Kirron Kher and Anupam Kher. While Yaami awaits his arrival, Ali is in constant touch with her and mentions having brought a bomb of a gift for her. A Pink Panther kind of cop, gnawing on his doughnut, happens to pick up the word ‘bomb’ and, instead of his girlfriend’s house, Ali finds himself in a police lock up. The level of humour the film plans to unleash on the viewer established, the film proceeds to dish out more of the same.

    Even while the debate on acceptance of a prospective Pakistani son-in-law continues, he is already ordered around by Kirron and made to do household chores. In an attempt to defrost soup, the container slips out of Ali’s hands, goes straight out of the kitchen window and lands on Anupam’s head, knocking him unconscious. The police, it is made to look, don’t take too kindly to the Pakistanis and Yaami does her best to keep Ali away from the scene of this accident not knowing the man lying unconscious on the street is her very own father.

    When it is realised that the victim could well be Anupam the action shifts in his direction. Efforts to create funny situations out of his hospitalization, his encounter with a hooker and his family’s search for him don’t succeed. There is no comedy; the situations are just not funny enough. There are some side tracks like Yaami’s sister, Sara Khan, who has had a fight with her husband and has come to stay with her parents, and a running tiff with the Pakistani neighbors. The grandfather’s track is juvenile.

    Performances are generally mediocre. Yaami is okay. Ali can’t act and ends up making awkward gestures with his hands. Kirron does what she is expected to do: play a loud Punjabi woman. Anupam is wasted. Sara Khan does well while the best of the lot is the child who plays Sara’s daughter; she is the only natural one.

    The script is loose and lacking in substance, which makes the direction as uninspiring. The film has two good songs in Nahi maloom….. and Chal Buleya

    A poor fare with indifferent public response, Total Siyapaa faces the threat of discontinuation from cinema halls mid-week.

    MUMBAI: Sony Pictures has just released the first trailer of the Annie reboot which showcases Academy Award nominee Quvenzhané Wallis (Beasts of the Southern Wild) stars as Annie, a young, happy foster kid who’s also tough enough to make her way on the streets of New York in 2014.  Originally left by her parents as a baby with the promise that they’d be back for her someday, it’s been a hard knock life ever since with her mean foster mom Miss Hannigan. 

     

    But everything’s about to change when the hard-nosed tycoon and New York mayoral candidate Will Stacks – advised by his brilliant VP, Grace and his shrewd and scheming campaign advisor, Guy – makes a thinly-veiled campaign move and takes her in. Stacks believes he’s her guardian angel, but Annie’s self-assured nature and bright, sun-will-come-out-tomorrow outlook on life just might mean it’s the other way around.

     

    Along with Wallis, the film also stars Academy Award winner Jamie Foxx (Ray), Cameron Diaz (Charlie’s Angels), Rose Byrne (X-Men: First Class), Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje (Oz) and Bobby Cannavale (Boardwalk Empire).

    Johnny Depp and Christopher Nolan team up for ‘Transcendence’

    MUMBAI: This Summer, fans are in for a rare treat as Johnny Depp and Christopher Nolan join forces for the first time in Hollywood history for the upcoming sci-fi thriller Transcendence.

     

    Produced by Nolan and directed by his long time cinematographer Wally Pfister, the movie will see Johnny Depp undergo a terrifying transformation for the portrayal of Dr. Will Caster, an artificial intelligence researcher. MVP Entertainment India and PVR Pictures will jointly release Transcendence in Indian theaters on 18 April 2014.

     

    The directorial debut of Wally Pfister, follows the life of Dr. Will Caster (Depp), an artificial intelligence researcher who strives to create a machine that possesses sentience and collective intelligence. Extremists who oppose technological advancement target him, but their actions drive him toward his goal. Caster also wants to become part of the new technology, and his wife Evelyn and his best friend Max Waters, also researchers, question the wisdom of this drive. Caster’s goal to acquire knowledge becomes one to acquire power, and he seems to be unstoppable. Depp is seen undergoing a terrifying transformation for the role Caster attempts to transfer his knowledge, memories and emotions into an advanced computer programme to live on as artificial intelligence.

     

    Additionally the Nolan production will feature a stellar star cast in the form of Morgan Freeman (The Bucket List, Last Vegas), Rebecca Hall (Prestige), Kate Mara (Shooter) and Paul Bettany (The Da Vinci Code) who will be seen in supporting roles.
