  • ‘Revolver Rani’ fails to grab eyeballs

‘Revolver Rani’ fails to grab eyeballs

MUMBAI: The trade expected Revolver Rani to draw good houses because of Kangna Ranaut’s recent hit, Queen, but the film opened to a very weak response. The improvement over the weekend was negligible. The poor content belies any chance of sustaining today onwards. The film has managed to collect about Rs 6 crore for the first three days.

Samrat & Co. has emerged a total disaster failing to manage even a crore in the first weekend. The film has collected Rs 90 lakh for the opening weekend.

Kaanchi, with an old-fashioned approach with its title till its promotion and release strategy has failed miserably. The film managed to collect Rs 2.45 crore for the first weekend.

2 States is already a hit and on its way to getting bigger. The film has collected Rs 60.2 crore for the first week and keeping a solid hold on the box office through its second weekend.

Main Tera Hero is fair in its third week adding Rs 3.25 crore to take its three week total to Rs 52 crore.

Queen has managed another Rs 50 lakh in its seventh week to take its seven week tally to Rs 58 crore.

  • Indian and American business houses need to rise above minor disagreements

Indian and American business houses need to rise above minor disagreements

NEW DELHI: ‘The Girl Rising Project,’ an innovative partnership between the industry and Hollywood to work on empowerment of women and education of the girl child, has been presented the Social Citizenship award at the 15th edition of the FICCI-IIFA Global Business Forum at Tampa Bay in Florida.

Infosys chairman N R Narayanmurthy has been honoured for lifetime achievement and Bharat Desai, chairman of Syntel – the American Information Technology major and the richest Indian American in United States – was feted for Business Achievement at the function.

FICCI also signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Tampa Bay Trade & Protocol Council to enhance the business connectivity with the region. Over 30 per cent of the merchandise trade between United States and India is routed through the Port of Tampa. The region can become significantly important for India not only as an access point for Southern United States but also can act as a gateway for Latin America.

The two-day business meet was held on 24 and 25 April to coincide with the Indian International Film Academy awards weekend. Political and business luminaries of Florida were present at the event on US-India Partnership: A Catalyst of Economic Growth.

The film and entertainment industry in India was represented by media personalities like Shabana Azmi, Anil Kapoor, Priyanka Chopra, Ramesh Sippy, and Rakesh Omprakash Mehra.

FICCI vice-president Harshavardhan Neotia who led a 20 member CEO’s delegation to Tampa Florida, urged business leaders from both sides to look at opportunities beyond infrastructure and IT, driven by genuine interest in each other’s economy.  In the backdrop of the Indian elections and a new Indian government by June, there is a keen anticipation to take forward the Indo-US strategic partnership, which seems to be somehow gone to a zone of discomfort, he stated.

The Florida and Tampa Bay politicos – Mayor Bob Buckhorn and commissioner Al Higginbotham – and Florida attorney general Pam Bondi echoed similar sentiments.

Diane Farrell, the acting president of USIBC, was quick to list out various opportunities that India and US can and are exploring. India’s CG Atlanta Ajit Kumar specifically emphasised that the India US friendship should not be affected by small disagreements.

The Global Leadership Award is one of the highlights of the FICCI-IIFA Global Business Forum and is conferred on individuals or organisations that have championed success stories and made a difference to business or society across the world.

The business event discussed most of the compelling issues in the US-India Commerce, which include issues related to energy partnership and resource efficiency, collaboration in media & entertainment, life sciences, education and skills, and also areas of discomfort as movement of skilled labour which ails the Indian IT industry.

FICCI secretary general A Didar Singh said both Indian and American industry needs to look beyond the temporary irritants and continue to gain from each other’s strengths through business to business  and people to people connects. He said that we now need to look beyond traditional cooperation in infrastructure and IT and highlighted three more sectors such as defence, skills development and higher education and energy, going forward.

Others who spoke included Narayanmurthy, TERI chairman R K Pachauri, , L&T Infotech CEO Mukesh Aghi, University of Hosuton president Renu Khator, University of South Florida  president Judy Genschaft and many more.

  • 300’s Zach Snyder to direct ‘Justice League’

300’s Zach Snyder to direct ‘Justice League’

MUMBAI: Confirming the studio’s plans for a movie based on its iconic super-team for the first time to the Wall Street Journal (WSJ), Warner Bros. president of worldwide production Greg Silverman said the studio has set plans to make a Justice League movie.

Like Man of Steel and its follow-up, which starts production next month, Justice League will be directed by Zack Snyder (300, Watchmen). Henry Cavill is expected to return as Superman, along with Ben Affleck (Gone Girl) and Gal Gadot, who play Batman and Wonder Woman, respectively in 2016’s Man of Steel sequel tentatively titled Batman vs. Superman.

“It will be a further expansion of this universe,” said Silverman to WSJ. “’Superman vs. Batman’ will lead into ‘Justice League.’”

A script is still in development and Warner Bros. has not set a release date, though the movie is unlikely to come out before 2018. The studio has recently been casting the role of Cyborg, a half-robotic hero who is expected to have a cameo in Batman vs. Superman and then appear in Justice League. Other DC heroes who have been in Justice League comic books include Aquaman, Flash and Green Lantern.

The plans for three superhero movies in relatively quick succession show how intent Warner is on catching up with rival Walt Disney Co.’s Marvel Studios in building a cinematic superhero universe after years of lagging behind.

  • Spielberg to bring Dahl’s ‘Big Fat Giant’ on screen

Spielberg to bring Dahl’s ‘Big Fat Giant’ on screen

MUMBAI: According to The Hollywood Reporter (THR), Steven Spielberg will helm the live-action film adaptation which will be based on the fantastical tale of a Big Friendly Giant (BGF) who befriends a young orphan girl.

The BFG is no ordinary bone-crunching giant. He is far too nice and jumbly. Had she been carried off in the middle of the night by the Bloodbottler, the Fleshlumpeater, the Bonecruncher, or any of the other giants-rather than the BFG-she would have soon become breakfast.

When Sophie hears that they are flush-bunking off in England to swollomp a few nice little chiddlers, she decides she must stop them once and for all. And the BFG is going to help her!

DreamWorks acquired the book in 2011 with Kathleen Kennedy and Frank Marshall to produce. Melissa Mathison, who penned the script for E.T., wrote the screenplay. Marshall will produce with Michael Siegel on board as executive producer along with Madden.

There has been one other adaptation of the popular children’s book: for a 1989 animated made-for-TV television movie in the U.K. Spielberg, has not directed a movie since 2012’s Lincoln, but Spielberg is officially committing himself to BFG and is planning a 2015 start date with a release in 2016.

  • Indian screen community celebrates cinema on world IP day

Indian screen community celebrates cinema on world IP day

MUMBAI: In recognition of innovation and creativity in content industries, the MPDA is partnering with local screen associations and industry bodies to organize events in support of World IP Day, this year designated Movies: A Global Passion.

On April 26, 2014, in association with strategic alliance partner, the Andhra Pradesh Film Chamber of Commerce (APFCC) and leading multiplex chains across the country, the MPDA launched an online quiz for multiplex staff entitled ‘Be A Movie Cop’. This initiative attempts to raise awareness on the threats and challenges of camcording in cinemas, while rewarding theatre staff with exciting prizes, including a ‘Movie Cop’ badge in recognition of their efforts to curb content theft in their cinemas.

“We are happy to collaborate with the Motion Picture Dist. Association, India and the APFCC on this interactive and educative initiative. Cinema staff are the frontline of defense and need to be equipped with the right understanding and tools to help combat camcording in cinemas,” said Ashish Saksena, Chief Operating Officer, Big Cinemas.

“As the leading multiplex chain in the country, we at INOX take ample measures to curb piracy across all our multiplexes. We are happy to be a part of this initiative of MPDA, India and the APFCC to combat this menace and will continue our efforts to uproot and eradicate this threat out of our industry.” said Daizy Lal, Chief Operating Officer, Inox Leisure Ltd.

On April 26, in celebration of the global passion for movies, the American Center, New Delhi in association with MPDA (India) will host special screenings of three Hollywood blockbuster films – Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Disney – UTV, Noah – Viacom 18 and Rio 2 – Fox Star Studios, India which will also feature an IP quiz. Over 150 guests comprising Government of India officials, the U.S. Embassy and students from various universities will attend the event.

“India and the United States both have diverse and incredibly vibrant film industries,” says Joshua W. Polacheck, Cultural Attache for north India at the U.S. Embassy in New Delhi, “and we are proud to work together with MPDA, India and our partners across India to promote intellectual property rights. The creative workers in both countries deserve these protections and consumers must understand the very real negative implications of piracy on the cinema we all love.”

MPDA, India will also participate in a conference organized by FICCI’s IPR division in association with the Department of Intellectual Property Office (IPO). The conference on ‘Fostering Innovations and Creativity in Indian Industry through Intellectual Property for Higher Growth Trajectory’ will focus on the role of IP in boosting creativity, the economic impact and challenges of online content protection in a digital economy.

Hollywood and Indian cinema both value films as products of Intellectual Property (IP). Audiences are often unaware of the creative process that goes into creating music, lyrics and screenplays and the value of the talent and skill of technicians, composers, lyricists, editors, producers, cinematographers, sound designers, animators, and creators of special effects.

Cinema is a global passion today and plays a significant role in creating jobs in addition to contributing to the economy of a nation. According to a study commissioned by the Motion Picture Dist. Association, India (MPDA) in association with the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI), the Film Federation of India (FFI) and the Film and Television Producers Guild of India (FTPGI), the Indian motion picture and television industry is one of the largest and fastest growing sectors, contributing c. USD 8.1 billion (c. INR 50,000 Cr.) to the country’s economy, equating to 0.5% of GDP, in 2013, and supports a significant 1.8 million (18.8 lac) jobs.

“The opportunities to increase potential and growth in this industry would be significant, if content was better protected. Content theft through camcording in cinemas and rogue/ illegitimate websites continues to undermine profits and threatens jobs in our creative industries. As we join our partners on World IP Day to increase awareness and respect for creative works in a digital age, creating a legislative framework that promotes and protects the film industry which supports millions of jobs, while recognizing the challenges of a digital economy is the need of the hour,” said Uday Singh, Managing Director, MPDA, India.

  • ‘Revolver Rani’… Of Bullets and Boredom

‘Revolver Rani’… Of Bullets and Boredom

MUMBAI: The title of the film, Revolver Rani, sounds like Hunterwali and various others mid 20th century woman-oriented films. These films commanded their own audience; a class of moviegoers who remained loyal to the brand.  Some makers like to find such local subjects which either fail to find buyers or, when they do, don’t work with the audience at all. Despite a couple of woman dacoit films like Putlibai and Bandit Queen, Revolver Rani seems quite outlandish as the story of a woman bahubali from the dacoit belt of Chambal.

Kangana Ranaut has just lost an election to a creepy politician, Zakir Hussain, who had lost to her in an earlier election. Zakir, it seems, got a bribe to the tune of 200 crore from a mining giant to get them a concession on a mining belt. Wonder which corporate would invest that kind of money in a loser politician expecting him to win because they gave him 200 crore. But this is nothing compared to what follows.

The film is actually about the plight of a woman who has never had anything work in her favour. She is unattractive to start with. She sees her mother being raped by the very man who killed her father. One day she empties all six bullets into him. After that, she is taken away by her mama, Piyush Mishra, with ambitions to turn her into a terror in his area and make her a political heavyweight. Her marriage has also been disaster with her husband branding her as a banjh and torturing her and also ending up with bullets with Kangna emptying an entire magazine in his body.

Piyush is a master manipulator and uses Kangna’s angst for her political rise. Her opponent, Zakir, as well as the local police are  equally scared of her. She is the gun-wielding terror though it is another matter that when she and her rivals shower each other with bullets, no bullet hits anybody! While their battles continue, Kangna finds or she thinks she has found true love she always craved for in a small time actor, Vir Das. Vir actually has a girlfriend waiting in Mumbai but he decides to exploit Kangna’s weakness and talk her into financing his films. Since Kangna really loves him and is overtly possessive about him, Vir is now trapped. He is virtually a prisoner not allowed to step out without her.

Producers: Raju Chadha, Nitin Tej Ahuja, Rahul Mittra.

    Director: Sai Kabir.

Cast: Kangna Ranaut, Piyush Mishra, Zakir Hussain, Vir Das.

Piyush, meanwhile, does a sting on Zakir through a TV journalist making him confess to accepting 200 crore. He loses his ministry. In the by-election, Kangna is sure to win. The enmity is now at its peak and ways are being sought to eliminate her. That is when Kangna finds out that she is pregnant. She was not a banjh after all. The woman in her comes alive and she wants to keep the child and marry Vir, collect all the party funds and move to Venice with Vir. While Vir wants nothing to do with this idea, mama Piyush sees all his plans going awry. Both Vir and Piyush, now turn into Kangna’s enemies and are ready to join her enemies and betray her.

Kangna is ambushed at a night halt by an army of her enemies. She fights, killing many and heavily injured herself is given up for dead. But, she has survived and threatening you with a sequel!

But before a sequel, the makers could at least have made the first version a bit tolerable. The film is shoddily written; it wavers from one thing to another and, let alone convincing episodes, they are not even plausible. If this kind of politics and political rivalries still exist in parts of India, what about the audience in general finding identification with them? If the script is bad, direction is pointless. The film has a couple of good songs, including one from Asha Bhosle, but they don’t fit in the scenario. Neither the film nor Kangna’s plight touch you. Why has the director gone out of his way to make Kangna look unattractive? As for performances, Kangna excels despite her character offering little variation. Piyush is impressive with fair support coming from Zakir. Vir refuses to change his expressions.

Revolver Rani was expected to cash in on the recent Kangna hit, Queen. But it is a letdown on that count and otherwise too.

    Samrat & Co… Bankrupt

A detective thriller is still a genre the big screen can share with small one even as many genres are now monopolised by the television. A decent Hindi detective whodunit has not been seen in a long time on the screen and the idea is sound enough to try one. Kavita K Barjatya of the Rajshri banner attempts one here. The inspiration comes from various original sources such as Sherlock Holmes, Agatha Christie novels and even Satyajit Ray’s famous Bengali character, Feluda, among others. The film pays homage to Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and his best known character, Holmes. Since the sources are from past, so is the story of Samrat & Co.

    Producer: Kavita K Barjatya.

    Director: Kaushik Ghatak.

Cast: Rajeev Khandelwal, Madalsa Sharma, Gopal Datt, Girish Karnad, Priyanshu Chatterjee.

Rajeev Khandelwal plays a private investigator that has been called in by Madalsa Sharma, daughter of a rich patriarch from Shimla, Girish Karnad, to check on a series of mysterious events taking place at his mansion. The lush green garden in the mansion is going dry, her father’s horse dies and Karnad himself suffers from indifferent health and dies soon as Rajeev arrives on the scene.

It is a typical old-fashioned investigation as read and seen in various books and films earlier. Rajeev talks to himself as he works on various clues and red herrings. As Madalsa visits Rajeev to seek his help, he decides to impress her by telling things about her observed from her presence. Not all his explanations are convincing. He says she has had an eye correction surgery to get rid of her spectacles because she is still in the habit of adjusting her nonexistent specs but it could easily have been her migration to use of contact lenses. Much more is in the offing on this account as the film proceeds.

The film neither has anything new to offer nor does it present the old story in a manner worth watching. The writing is poor and so is the direction. The film lacks finesse having been made on a small budget. While Rajeev is a misfit for the role and his fuzzy hair look not going well either, Madalsa is around only to fantasise about romancing Rajeev.

Samrat & Co has had a poor opening with ‘No audience, No show’ tags at many halls.
