  • Tamasha ends week one with Rs 38.2 crore

Tamasha ends week one with Rs 38.2 crore

MUMBAI: Tamasha, thanks to its star cast, Ranbir Kapoor and Deepika, coupled with the names of SajidNadiadwala banner and Imtiaz Ali, has managed to draw a face-saving opening weekend despite all bad reviews. The film collected Rs. 38.2 crore for three days. However, the impact of bad reviews have started showing from today as the collections are indicating a major declining trend.

*PremRatanDhanPayo takes a massive dive in its second week. Lack of appreciation and some degree of repeat value that most Salman Khan films enjoy is missing in this film. The second week collections are less than 15% of its first week at Rs. 23.2 crore. This takes the film’s two week total to 195.2 crore.

*X Past Is Present is poor. The film collects Rs. 40 lakh in its first week.

*PyaarKaPunchnama adds Rs. 20 lakh in its sixth week taking its two week tally to Rs. 61.75 crore.

**Tough days for cinema chains as next two weeks have little to offer. While, they may have some hope from Hate Story 3, releasing next Friday, the week thereafter has no new releases.

All eyes and expectations rest on the week of December 18 when two major films, BajiraoMastani and Dilwale, will be pitted against each other.

  • Tamasha …….A dull show

    Tamasha …….A dull show

Among the various genres of movies are psycho thriller and romance. Tamasha is a combination of these two and can be called a psycho-romance. The title of the film sounds like a 1980s B grade movie and does not quite go with the film, though. Like in most of his films, here too, the director, Imtiaz Ali, counts a lot on scenic locations. He has shot the romantic parts of the film in the Mediterranean island of Corsica.

Imtiaz probably watched something like Roman Holiday before he sat down to write the film. It starts in a similar fashion, with a meeting between Ranbir Kapoor, a mid-level executive and Deepika Padukone, a tea estate tycoon. Both know that this is a temporary encounter and agree not to reveal their real names or backgrounds to each other. They also decided on not having a physical relation or body contact!

Both explore the beautiful island and sing and dance with the local performers. Ranbir has been fond of listening to stories since his childhood—myths, legends and folk—anything. He then loves to act out the characters. He introduces himself as Don who is on the radar of the police from 12 countries. In a song he sings with Deepika, he mimics late Dev Anand. That is his idea of fun in his life.

The holiday comes to an end and both have fallen in love but decide to stick to their agreement. However, Deepika, when she is leaving Ranbir while he is still sleeping, can’t resist her urges and gets into his bed.

Back in India, Deepika has taken over the tea company in Kolkata from her father while Ranbir joins his dull job in Delhi. He is sincere and hardworking in his otherwise dull life. Deepika is on a visit to Delhi in connection with her business where she learns that Ranbir frequents a restaurant and decides to meet up with him. They meet and the romance resumes. Ranbir thinks it is time to pop the question and, amid a get-together with a handful of friends, he proposes to Deepika with a ring planted on a cake.

Deepika then realizes that this is not the Ranbir she fell in love with. The Ranbir she knew in Corsica was a fun loving, happy-go-lucky man. The one she knows now in India is a dull man with a set routine with no excitement in life. He is not ambitious, does his job routinely, also meets up with her every evening, they spend time together and that is that. She does not think this is the man and this is the kind of life she wants to get into. They part. But Ranbir takes it hard. From here on, Deepika vanishes from the scene and it is all about Ranbir. He goes berserk, acts rude with people around and, finally, also misbehaves with his boss.

Ranbir is now jobless for some months and decides to go spend some time with his parents. There is no peace here. All his life, Ranbir’s decisions had been made by his father, Javed Sheikh, because of who Ranbir’s life became what it was—mundane. Javed is upset to know about Ranbir losing his job. As is his wont, Javed starts lecturing Ranbir again leading to him walking out. Ranbir goes in search of the old man from whom he listened to stories as a child and asks him to compete his own love story which is stuck halfway. In the process, he gleans enlightenment that his story would be what he wanted it to be.

Ranbir sheds his act of being a disciplined, mid-level white-collar worker. He takes to his real self, in dressing, behavior as well as likes and dislikes. He is now custom made for Deepika.

Tamasha starts off by confusing the viewer. The film makes one think the couple has known each other for ages but are only putting on an act though, actually, this is their first meeting as Deepika has lost her bag with money and passport. Nobody seems to know English in Corsica and nobody would allow her to make a phone call either. Ranbir, the lone other Indian on the scene is there to help her. The romance then takes a backseat as the footage dwells on Ranbir’s troubled dual life and that makes for a boring viewing. Direction is below par with many contradiction and glitches. The film is overloaded with songs of which Matargashti… , Agar tum saath ho… and Andheri raat mein appeal. Dialogue is routine. Cinematography is pleasing. Editing is slack.

The film has few characters, depending mostly on Ranbir and Deepika. While Ranbir has a limited range but most footage to which he can’t do justice. Deepika is vibrant and gives a good account of herself. Sadly, the chemistry the duo shared is missing here. Javed Sheikh has about three scenes and the only time he has to perform is when he has to get up from his chair.

    Tamasha is poor show.

    Producer: Sajid Nadiadwala.

    Director: Imtiaz Ali.

Cast: Ranbir Kapoor, Deepika, Imtiaz Sheikh.

  • Box Office: Prem Ratan Dhan Payo revenue drops after extended weekend

Box Office: Prem Ratan Dhan Payo revenue drops after extended weekend

Prem Ratan Dhan Payo, after taking a record breaking opening on Thursday, since it was released a day earlier to take advantage of Diwali weekend, started dropping from the very next day. The general lack of appreciation for the film led to huge come down in footfalls. So much so that after the four days of its extended weekend, the film could barely add only as much as its first day figures for rest of the four days Monday on wards which is little over Rs 40 crore. The film managed Rs 172 crore for the eight day week. The film is not likely to get the advantage of its open run in the second week and could end up as a loss maker at the box office. (Refer Editor’s note below)

*X Past is Present, the collaborative effort of 11 film makers is a nonstarter.

*Charlie Ke Chakkar Mein added 1.8 lakh in its second week to take its two week total to about Rs 82 lakh.

*Main Aur Charles collected 1.7 lakh in its third week to take its three week total to Rs 6.67 crore.

*Pyaar Ka Punchnama 2 has added 40 lakh in its fifth week taking its five week tally to RS 61.55 crore.

Editor’s note: Considering that it cost an estimated Rs 115 crore to make and market Prem Ratan Dhan Payo, it must rake in around Rs 230 crore at the Box Office before it can even break even. It must make a profit for all the stakeholders, which include satellite rights revenue for Salman Khan who reportedly has not charged anything to make the film, and the music rights revenue that will reportedly go to film’s makers.. Just crossing the Rs 100 crore or Rs 200 crore mark at the Box Office does not qualify a film as a profit maker.

  • Prem Ratan Dhan Payo ends extended weekend with Rs 129.77 crore

Prem Ratan Dhan Payo ends extended weekend with Rs 129.77 crore

*Prem Ratan Dhan Payo, as expected, made the most of an early start with its release a day earlier on Thursday, to cash in on Diwali festival weekend, The Suraj Barjatya-Salman Khan combine as well as its solo release status worked in its favour and the drought of major release for some time brought the film the biggest first day figure ever at the box office as the film collected a record Rs 41 crore on Thursday. The not so good word of mouth affected the collection and footfalls on day two, Friday as the film dropped by over 25 percent and collected Rs 30 crore. On Saturday, the film collected a little less over its Fridayfigures and could not grow on  Sunday finally ending its four day weekend with Rs 129.77 crore.

*Charlie Ke Chakkar Mein, a poor thriller with Naseeruddin Shah playing an investigator trying to track down a cache of cocaine and related murders, had the makings for a tedious watch. The film bombed badly falling short of even Rs one crore mark with just Rs 80 lakh trickling in.

*Ranbanka, with Ravi Kishen in the lead, was expected to help the makers make a decent box office in UP and Bihar, belied expectations. The film managed to collect just Rs 10 lakh in its first week nationally.

*Yaara Silly Silly and Four Pillars Of Basement collected just Rs 15 lakh and Rs 25 lakh, respectively, in their first week.

*Titli collected 40 lakh in its second week taking its two week total to 2 crore.

**Main Aur Charles had a poor second week managing to collect just Rs 90 lakh to take its two week total to Rs 6.5 crore.

*Shaandaar added Rs 25 lakh in its third week to take its three week tally to Rs 35.25 crore.

*Pyaar Ka Punchnama held strong in its fourth week by collecting Rs 2.45 crore and takes its four week to Rs 61.15 crore.

  • ‘Baahubali’ premiere on Sony Max betters Salman Khan’s ‘Bajrangi Bhaijaan’ ratings

‘Baahubali’ premiere on Sony Max betters Salman Khan’s ‘Bajrangi Bhaijaan’ ratings

MUMBAI: The two Bs that created the maximum buzz at the Indian box office this year were Bajrangi Bhaijaan and Baahubali – The Beginning. While the former starring Salman Khan did wonders at its recent world television premiere on Star Gold, the latter has gone and bettered its performance on the small screen.

According to TAM Media Research’s analytical division S-Group, Baahubali – The Beginning has toppledBajrangi Bhaijaan with TVR of 6.85 on Sony Max. Bajrangi Bhaijaan notched 6.80 TVR in its world TV premiere on Star Gold.

As was earlier reported by Indiantelevision.com, Star Gold emerged as the number one channel in the Hindi movie genre with the premiere of Bajrangi Bhaijaan. The movie perched itself on the sixth spot on the elite list of the Top 10 world television premieres from 2010 – 2015 as per TAM Media Research.

However, Baahubali has now replaced Bajrangi Bhaijaan in the sixth spot of the top 10 world television premiere list.

Baahubali, directed by S. S Rajamouli and produced by Shobu Yarlagadda and Prasad Devineni, was made in Telugu and Tamil. It was also dubbed in Hindi, Malayalam and French languages.

Baahubali had its Hindi world television premieres in week 44 (25 October) on Sony Max. It may be recalled that it was telecast on Malayalam and Telugu languages, earlier in October.

Baahubali in Telugu telecast on Star India’s regional channel Maa TV received the maximum TVR of 21.8, followed by its Malayalam version on Mazhavil Manorama with 16.1 TVR and last but not the least in Hindi on Sony Max with 6.85 TVR.

Aamir Khan’s 3 Idiots with 10.88 TVR leads the top ten list of world television premiere followed by Salman Khan’s Bodyguard with 9.95 TVR in the second spot. Shah Rukh Khan’s Chennai Express with 9.50 TVR stands in the third spot, while yet another Salman’s Dabangg is on fourth spot with 9.19 TVR. In the fifth position is the Ajay Devgn starrer Singham with 8.72 TVR.

In week 44 Baahubali replaced blockbuster Bajrangi Bhaijaan, which was dominating the sixth spot in week 42. Baahubali with 6.85 TVR bagged the sixth slot in the top ten list just above the Bajrangi Bhaijaan, which is in seventh slot with 6.80 TVR. In eight spot is the Shah Rukh Khan starrer Ra.One,which received 6.72 TVR and Aamir’s PK was at ninth spot with 6.62 TVR. In tenth spot is the Akshay Kumar starrer Entertainment movie premiere with 5.49 TVR.

Bajrangi Bhaijaan was heavily promoted and hence received 81 per cent promo reach and average frequency of 15.5. Baahubali, on the other hand, was promoted to achieve a 70 per cent each. Bajrangi Bhaijaan received 23.3 per cent whereas Baahubali received a higher reach conversion that is 25.1 per cent among the both the movies, on Hindi speaking market (HSM).

  • Mediocre films fail to create fireworks at box office

Mediocre films fail to create fireworks at box office

MUMBAI: The pre-Diwali period being the worst in the calendar for new films to release, it used to see re-runs or dubbed films in the old days. Now, there is a horde of nondescript films releasing which, otherwise, would not get playtime at multiplexes. Last week saw a number of such films releasing, all to disastrous results. All of them faced the ‘no audience, no show’ status.

For Charlie Ke Chakkar Main, Naseeruddin Shah was the only USP, whereas the rest were a total at loss for the viewers. The film about a cop investigating into a drug hijack case, decides to be complicated and loses track. Shah in top billing is no help thereafter and the film performs poorly. The film has collected about Rs 70 lakh for its opening weekend.

Four Pillars Of Basement, a poor adaptation of the Hollywood film P2, is lost in transition to such an extent, it is insufferable. Despite being based on just two characters hogging the footage, it’s them, these two untalented characters and the makers’ lack of qualification that sinks the film in the first place. The film is very poor with just about Rs 15 lakh to show for its first weekend.

Ranbanka, another UP Baahubali film comes a cropper. Such cases don’t even merit a paragraph coverage in urban newspapers, what would justify a feature film on such themes? The film managed a poor Rs 25 lakh for the weekend.

Yaara Silly Silly is another loser with collection of around Rs 40 lakh for its opening weekend.

The last week faced the same situation as the only hope of the week, Main Aur Charles, boasting of a saleable star cast and decent promotion, failed badly. The film had a below par weekend of Rs 3.65 crore and just about managed to hold on as it finished its first week with approximately Rs 5.6 crore.

Titli, the other release, produced by Dibakar Bannerjee and marketed by Yash Raj Films, fared poorly. The film managed to collect merely Rs 1.6 crore in its first week.

Guddu Ki Gun collected Rs 1.9 crore in its first week.

Shaandaar collected Rs 2.1 crore in its second week taking its two week tally to Rs 39 crore.

Pyaar Ka Punchnama 2 has collected Rs 6.8 crore in its third week to take its two week total to Rs 58.7 crore. The film is super hit.

  • Producer Gaurang Doshi signs Anees Bazmee & Abbas Mustan for two films

Producer Gaurang Doshi signs Anees Bazmee & Abbas Mustan for two films

MUMBAI: Producer Gaurang Doshi, who has previously produced films like the Amitabh Bachchan starrerAankhen (2002) and Deewaar: Let’s Bring Our Heroes Home (2004), has now signed directors Anees Bazmee and Abbas-Mustan for his upcoming projects.

While Bazmee will be helming  a slick, big-budget, heist caper, Abbas-Mustan’s project is being touted as a never-seen-before adventure action romance with elements of spook.

Doshi said, “I always wanted to work with these directors and there couldn’t be a better genre, better cast and better scripts for these projects!”

However, Doshi is tight-lipped about the cast of the films. “What’s the fun in knowing everything all at once? The big announcement shall happens soon,” he signs off.
