  • Taare Zameem Par and A Wednesday in Indian panorama for IFFI 2008

    NEW DELHI: Three highly lauded Hindi films on relevant social issues – ‘Taare Zameen Par’, ‘A Wednesday’ and ‘Summer of 2007’ – and the award-winning Kannada film ‘Gulabi Talkies’ form part of the 26 feature and 21 non-feature films of the Indian Panorama selected for the International Film Festival of India in Goa next month.

    The juries submitted their reports to Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting Anand Sharma this afternoon.



    In addition, the Malayalam feature film ‘Pulijanmam’ by Priyanandan and the non-feature Bengali ‘Bishar Blues’ by Amitabh Chakraborty get automatic entry for having won the best film awards in their categories in the 54th National Film Awards.








    The jury for the feature films recommended that ‘Kanachivaram’ (Tamil) by S Priyadarshan and ‘Mahasatta’ (Marathi) by Ramesh Laxman More be sent for the Competition Section of the IFFI.



    The feature jury recommended that ‘Yarwing’, a film in Kokborok language of Tripura by Joseph Pulinthanath, be the inaugural film of the Panorama Section.



    The features include six in Malayalam, four each in Hindi and Tamil, three each in Marathi and Kannada, one each in Bengali, Assamese and Telugu, and one which is in English/Gujarati and Hindi.



    The seven-member Jury for Feature Films headed by critic and filmmaker K N T Sastry saw 104 films while the five-member Non-Feature Film Jury headed by filmmaker Anjan Bose saw 82.



    The award-winning Jayaraj is the only filmmaker to have films in both the feature and non-feature sections.



    Apart from ‘Pulijanmam’, the Malayalam films are ‘Vilapangalkkappuram’ by T V Chandran, ‘Gulmohar’ by Jayaraj, ‘Atayalangal’ by M G Sasi, ‘Oru Pennum Randaanum’ by Adoor Gopalakrishnan, ‘Aakashagopuram’ by Manu S Kumaran, and ‘Katha Parayumpol’ by Mohanan.



    The Hindi films are ‘Summer 2007’ by Suhail Tatari, ‘A Wednesday’ by Neeraj Pandey, ‘Taare Zameen Par’ by Aamir khan, and ‘Jodha Akbar’ by Ashutosh Gowariker.



    The Tamil films in addition to ‘Kanachivaram,’ are ‘Kalloori’ by Balaji Sakthivel, ‘Mudhal Mudhal Mudhal Varai’ by Krishna Seshadri Gomatam, and ‘Billa’ by Vishnu Vardhan.



    The Kannada films include ‘Gulabi Talkies’ by Girish Kassarvalli which won the best Indian film award at the Tenth Osian’s-Cinefan Festival of Asian and Arab Cinema, ‘Banada Neralu’ by Umashankara Swamy, and ‘Gubbachigalu’ bu Abhaya Simha.



    Apart from ‘Mahasatta’, the Marathi films are ‘Dohaa’ by Pushkaraj Paranjape, and ‘Valu’ by Umesh Vinayak Kulkarni.



    Apart from ‘Yarwing’, the other films are ‘Chaturanga’ (Bengali) by Suman Mukhopadhyay, ‘Mon Jai’ (Assamese) by M Maniram, ‘Mee Sreyobhilashi’ (Telugu) by V Eshwar Reddy, and ‘Little Zizou’ by Sooni Taraporevala which is in English, Gujarati and Hindi.



    The non-features include seven in English, four in Hindi, two each in Bengali and Malayalam, and one each in Kannada, Manipuri, Urdu, apart from one with only music and another which is in Hindi, Bengali and English.



    The English films include ‘Distant Rumblings’ by Bani Prakash Das on the remains of the Second World War in Manipur and Nagaland, ‘A Friend turned Foe’ by Gautam Saikia, ‘Divided Colours of a Nation’ by Umesh Aggarwal, ‘Four Women and a Room’ by Ambarien Al Qadar, ‘The Journalist and the Jehadi’ by Ramesh Sharma, ‘The Land of Rupshupas’ by A K Sidhpuri, and ‘Rehana: A Quest for Freedom’ by Gargi Sen and Priyanka Mukherjee.



    Dhin Tak Dha’ by ‘ShraddhaPasi’, ‘Apna Aloo Bazaar Becha’ by Pankaj H Gupta, ‘Children of the Pyre’ by Rajesh S Jala, and ‘Antardhwani’ by Jabbar Patel form the Hindi component.



    The two Bengali films are ‘The Shop that sold Everything’ by Abhyuday Khaitan and ‘Yearn to Learn’ by S K Aboul Rajjak, while the Malayalam films are ‘Vellappokkathil’ by Jayaraj and ‘Memories, Movement and a Machine’ by K R Manoj.



    The others are the Kannada ‘Putti’ by Jacob Varghese, the Urdu ‘Parwaaz’ by Biju Vishwanath, and the Manipuri ‘Ratan Thiyam – the man of Theatre’ by Nirmala Chanu and Oken Amakcham, apart from ‘Three of Us’ by Umesh Kulkarni which only has music and ‘Remembering Bimal Roy’ by Joy Bimal Roy in Hindi, Bengali, and English.

  • Tivo to offer Disney movies through CinemaNow and Jaman

    MUMBAI: Movies from Disney will be now be available on Tivo. These movies will be made available through CinemaNow and Jaman.


    The titles will be accessible on all standalone Tivo models such as Series3, Tivo HD, Tivo HD XL and Series2.



    Content from Jaman will be available from next week, at a rental price of $1.99 whereas CinemaNow movies will be available at the rental of $2.99.



    CinemaNow titles will include movies like Dumbo, The Fox and the Hound and Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man‘s Chest.








    Jaman will make available titles like Super Size Me and Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room.



    Services offered by Jaman and CinemaNow will allow users to choose movies and have them downloaded to their TiVo hard drives.



    Last year Tivo had partnered with Amazon VOD to launch a similar service.

  • BET, Hallmark ink movie deal with Weinstein Co

    MUMBAI: BET Networks and Hallmark Channel have picked up film packages from the Weinstein Co. and Twentieth TV.

    BET‘s deal with the Weinstein Company gives BET the first network-window premiere rights to The Longshots as well as the upcoming films Soul Men and Hurricane Season.


    Additionally, BET will also be a promotional partner on Soul Men and Hurricane Season.


    In a separate deal, Hallmark has acquired 80 titles from Twentieth TV.


    Titles include Big, Cheaper by the Dozen, Cocoon, Doctor Dolittle, Edward Scissorhands, Garfield, Home Alone, Ice Age, The Man From Snowy River, Mrs. Doubtfire, My Cousin Vinny, Speed, Waitress and Working Girl.


    The deal also includes the world TV premiere of the documentary Young at Heart.


    The movies will air on Hallmark Channel and Hallmark Movie Channel.

  • 67 Countries vying for 2008 Foreign Language Film Oscar

    MUMBAI: The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (Ampas) in the US has announced that a record 67 countries, including first-time entrant Jordan, have submitted films for consideration in the Foreign Language Film category for the 81st Academy Awards.

    India‘s entry is Taare Zameen Par. Jordan is competing with Captain Abu Raed. The early favorite for the top honor is said to be Italy‘s Gomorrah, which looks at the mafia. Five films will be nominated out of the 67.


    Apart from the Aamir Khan film, Asia‘s other entries include China‘s Olympics documentary Dream Weavers and Hong Kong‘s action fantasy Painted Skin.


    Nominations for the 81st Academy Awards will be announced on 22 January, 2009. The show takes place on 22 February and will air on Star Movies.

  • Percept Picture ropes in Rajan Vahi as COO for animation

    MUMBAI: Percept Picture Company has appointed Rajan Vahi as the COO for its animation projects.

    Prior to joining Percept, Vahi worked with Prime Focus Ltd. as the CEO – visual effects and animation.








    Vahi brings with him 22 years of experience in which he worked with companies such as MAD Entertainment Ltd, Delmar Trading Company, Pee Kay Vee Industrial Services and OTIS –Tianjin Elevator Company.

  • Universal in talks to sell Rogue Pictures for $150 million

    MUMBAI: Universal Studios is in talks to sell its specialty film label Rogue Pictures to private production and financing company Relativity Media.

    Rogue Pictures, which makes about four films a year in the horror and teen comedy genres, may fetch Universal Studios $150 million.


    The deal would transfer Rogue‘s title library of more than 25 films and over 30 upcoming projects to Relativity Media.


    Meanwhile, Universal would continue to distribute and market Rogue‘s movies.


    Rogue, which was launched in 2004 as a division of Universal‘s Focus Features, became an independent specialty unit of the parent studio in 2007.

  • International film festival for documentary begins in Guwahati

    MUMBAI: The international film festival for documentary, short and animation films, has started at Guwahati in Assam.


    Organised by Films Division under the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting in collaboration with Assam State Film (Finance and Development) Corporation Ltd, the three-day festival was inaugurated by the Assam chief minister Tarun Gogoi on 17 October.



    Apart from India, the film fest will showcase film-works from countries like Poland, Belgium, Bulgaria and Australia. The package for screening also has creative works of Satyajit Ray, Gulzar, Bhupen Hazarika, Ashis Mukherjee, Vinod Chopra, Jabbar Patel and Chaaru Kamal Hazarika, among others.



    The lineup includes 14 award-winning films from Mumbai international film festival for documentary, short and animation films. It also has 12 films on Assam made by the Films Division. Also, 23 other best films under the documentary and animation sections from the archive of Films Division will be screened.

  • Shemaroo releases comedy flick Rafoo Chakkar on home video

    MUMBAI: Shemaroo Entertainment has released comedy Rafoo Chakkar on DVDs and VCDs.

    The film stars Aslam Khan, Yudhishtir Urs, Nauheed Cyrussi and Nisha Rawal. The story revolves around four central characters who belong to different towns and have never met each other; they decide to run away when forced to get married by their parents.


    On the run, Pappu and Munnu meet and get attracted towards Millie and Jullie, not realising that they are the same girls with whom they were to get married to. Another twist comes in the story when Millie and Jullie meet Kokila and Koena (Archana and Mita), two middle aged sisters who hate men and never want to get married.


    But fate takes another turn and Kokila and Koena‘s father, who wants his daughters to marry, dies leaving his entire property in the hands of trustees managed by Dilkhush (Shakti Kapoor) and Hasmukh (Sadashiv Amrapurkar), making a will which has a catch.

  • Fun Cinemas to celebrate ‘Bangla weekends’

    NEW DELHI: Four Bengali films will be screened during the ‘Best of Bangla Weekends’ programme at Fun Cinemas in the National Capital Region for two consecutive weekends.


    Rituparno Ghosh‘s Chokher Bali and Antarmahal, Buddhadeb Dasgupta‘s Swapner Din and Raja Mukherjee‘s Bidhatar Lekha will be screened on 18–19 October and 25–26 October.


    “The aim of the Bangla weekends is to bring a sense of novelty and aesthetic pleasure to discerning audiences,” said Fun Cinemas SVP marketing Shirish Handa.


    The ‘Best of Bangla Weekends‘ will be hosted at Fun Cinemas, V3S Mall Delhi and Fun Cinemas in Vaishali and Ghaziabad.

  • Promoters up stake in PNC to 34.35%


    MUMBAI


    : The promoters of Pritish Nandy Communications (PNC) have increased their stake in the company to 34.45 per cent.

    Artinvest India, a promoter group company, has bought 1.30 per cent of PNC shares in the market in tranches to raise its stake to 2.69 per cent.


    With this transaction, the promoters have increased their stake from 33.15 per cent to 34.45 per cent.


    The shares of PNC ended Friday at 18.30 on the BSE, 3.68 per cent down from the previous day‘s close.
