  • Shree Ashtavinayak Q2 net up at Rs 65.76 million

    MUMBAI: Shree Ashtavinayak Cine Vision Limited has posted a net profit of Rs 65.76 million for the quarter ended 30 September 2008, up from Rs 10.05 million in the corresponding quarter of the previous year.

    Total income during the quarter has increased to Rs 413.01 million, from Rs 132.45 million in the year ago period.








    Shree Ashtavinayak has made a profit of Rs 85 million on a revenue of Rs 405 million from in-house film production and distribution. However its outside film distribution has incurred a loss of Rs 8.04 million.



    Expenditure has jumped to Rs 341.46 million in the second quarter of FY‘09, as compared to Rs 122.78 million in the corresponding quarter of last year. The company has spent Rs 281.35 million on amortization of intangible assets (film production and distribution rights).

  • K Sera Sera Q2 net up at Rs 168 million

    MUMBAI: K Sera Sera has posted a consolidated net profit of Rs 168.01 million for the quarter ended 30 September, up from Rs 76.19 million in the corresponding quarter of the previous fiscal.

    During the period, the company’s income has increased to Rs 449.64 million, from Rs 342.09 million in the corresponding quarter.



    Expenditure has increased to Rs 268.72 million as against Rs 251.62 million.



    On a standalone basis, K Sera Sera has a loss of Rs 25.58 million, as against a net profit of Rs 81.92 million in the year ago period.








    Income has fallen to Rs 1.60 million as compared to Rs 341.6 million year-on-year.



    The company says that out of the ten projects in hand, two of the movies Chal Chala Chal and Ek- The Power of One will be released in December and January 2009.

  • Big Pictures to release The Other End of the Line across North America

    MUMBAI: Big Pictures, the film production and distribution arm of Reliance ADA Group, in association with MGM and Hyde Park Entertainment, is releasing The Other End of the Line on 31 October in North America. Big Picture is releasing 91 prints of the film across North America.


    Produced by Ashok Amritraj and directed by James Dodson, The Other End of the Line is a romantic comedy based on an employee at an Indian call-center who travels to San Francisco to be with a guy she falls for over the phone.








    This is the first of its kind tie up for the marketing/distribution of an American film, in North America done by Big Pictures.



    Big Pictures international film business COO Jawahar Sharma said, “Working with Amritraj and MGM has been a pleasure. This is an example of how film companies around the world are realising how even in their home markets occasionally, they need to deploy special external resources to reach out to their target audience”.



    The film has Shriya Saran, Jesse Metcalfe, Anupam Kher, Sara Foster and Larry Miller in central roles.

  • Pyramid Saimira Theatre Q2 net slips to Rs 87 million

    MUMBAI : Pyramid Saimira Theatre Ltd‘s net profit has dropped to Rs 87.04 million in the second quarter of this fiscal, as against Rs 151.13 million a year ago.

    Margins have come under pressure due to a spurt in input costs. But the average revenue per user (ARPU) was maintained at Rs 40.11 including food and beverage revenue.


    Expenditure during the quarter has jumped to Rs 2.34 billion, up from Rs 1.25 billion in the corresponding quarter of the prior year.









    Total income, however, jumped 75 per cent to stand at Rs 2.52 billion during the quarter under review.


    Exhibition business has contributed Rs 1.84 billion while Rs 681.47 million came from food and beverages.


    Pyramid Saimira Group chairman PS Saminathan said, “PSTL Group in last two years was on an expansion spree and is in the current fiscal year focusing more on consolidation. We had closed down unviable screens, rationalised our expansion, and started investing in measures that will improve our ARPU. The results announced is only for our Exhibition Division and we feel this year as a group we will maintain a growth rate of around 40 per cent.”


    The company had 62.89 million footfalls in this quarter with an average occupancy rate of 35.90 per cent.

  • Bigflix partners NDTV Lumiere for online film downloads

    NEW DELHI: Reliance ADA Group’s online and offline movie rental service Bigflix.com and NDTV Lumiere, the world cinema channel from NDTV stable, have joined hands to enable movie downloads across India and the South Asian countries.

    Thirty titles from NDTV Lumiere‘s list will be available on the site on a yearly basis at a price of $1.99 per download to rent and $4.49 per download to own.



    Viewers can choose to watch films through real-time internet streaming and can alternatively download movies on their personal computers for seven days. This service will be made available across the SAARC territories, which comprises India, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Nepal, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Maldives.








    Video-on-Demand (movie downloads) business head Murtuza Kagalwala said, “We currently have access to 1500 titles and are looking at aggressively adding world class and rich content to our already existing world cinema titles.”



    NDTV Imagine senior vice president – new ventures Dhruvank Vaidya added, “After the launch of the channel and the ongoing success of theatrical releases and home videos, this association with Bigflix.com is another step in our journey to present these wonderful films to audiences not just in India but also across the SAARC region.”



    The association with BIGFlix.com kicks off with the release of Mika Kaurismäki‘s film library.

  • Toonz Animation to tap Chandamama for animation film

    MUMBAI:Chandamama will soon get a virtual moving image. Toonz Animation India is producing a full-length animated film based on a prime property from the library of Chandamama.


    The estimated budget of the movie is Rs 200 million. Toonz will undertake the production and will bear the entire cost.


    Toonz and Chandamama India have entered into an agreement for this venture.


    Says Toonz Animation CEO P Jayakumar, “Chandamama stories still linger in the minds of generations. The beauty of these stories lies in their simplicity and the socio-cultural values they try to communicate. The animated film will be a perfect platform to provide today’s youth both engaging and educative entertainment.”









    Conceptualized in 1947 by filmmakers B Nagi Reddi and Chakrapani, Chandamama has been publishing stories in print as well as electronic media in 14 languages. The library of Chandamama has over 15,000 exclusive stories.



    Says Chandamama CEO L Subramanyan, “Over the last 60 years, millions of Indians have grown up with Chandamama. The Association with Toonz and the proposed animated film will help us reach out to the current and future generations of young people and deliver the message across the new and emerging platforms.”

  • PNC bags International Star Award for quality

    MUMBAI: Business Initiative Directions has awarded Pritish Nandy Communications (PNC) with the ‘International Star Award for Quality’ (ISAQ) in the gold category.

    The award was given away at the 33rd International Star for Quality Convention held in Geneva, Switzerland. PNC is the first motion picture company to win the award.








    The Gold ISAQ was given in recognition of its quality, continuous product improvement and customer satisfaction on the basis of ISAQ regulations and criteria as per the QC100 total quality management model and in furtherance of its reputation and position by implementing and promoting quality culture.


    The function was attended by members of various diplomatic corps, international businessmen, professionals and members participating from 74 countries.

  • Prime Focus Q2 net profit rises 7.83 % to Rs 102 million

    MUMBAI: Prime Focus reported a net profit rose of Rs 102.1 million for the second quarter of Fy‘09, up 7.83 per cent in the same quarter of the previous year.

    During the quarter, revenue jumped 47.52 per cent to stand at Rs 849.4 million.








    Prime Focus MD Namit Malhotra said, “Our presence across multiple continents has provided our customers an unprecedented global value proposition. In India, we have had a good quarter both in terms of films as well as advertising with big budget movies and highly acclaimed television commercials to our credit. We are focusing on further strengthening our global pipeline, to provide the Indian media and entertainment industry with international quality work.”



    “Going forward, we will continue to up our benchmark by providing services to not only Indian customers but also tap global markets with our skilled resources,” added Malhotra.


    During the quarter, the company has successfully completed post production work on box office hits like Dasavathaaram, Love Story 2050, Tashan among others. It has completed post production and visual effects work on several highly acclaimed television commercials like Himalayan Mineral Water, Chloremint, Oxicash, Toyota Innova etc and television shows like Maharabharata on 9X .

  • PVR Q2 net jumps 27% to Rs 79 million

    MUMBAI: PVR has posted a net profit of Rs 79.3 million for the quarter ended 30 September 2008, a jump of 27 per cent as against Rs 62.5 million in the corresponding quarter last fiscal.







    During the period, net sales has seen a growth of 26 per cent to stand at Rs 784.2 million, from Rs 625.7 million in the year ago period.



    The multiplex operator’s screen count rose 29 per cent to 101 during the quarter from the previous year. Average ticket prices also rose 13 per cent to Rs 140.

  • Netflix, Samsung partner to stream movies on Blu-ray disc players


    MUMBAI: Netflix and Samsung Electronics America have announced a broad partnership to offer consumers the ability to instantly stream movies and TV episodes from the Netflix Web site directly to their living rooms via Samsung‘s BD-P2500 and BD-P2550 Blu-ray disc players.


    The companies also said they are collaborating to enable Samsung to integrate instant streaming from Netflix into a range of home entertainment products.









    The BD-P2550 and BD-P2500 are currently available at $399.99. Consumers who already own one of these Samsung players can upgrade their device at no additional cost to enable instant streaming from a growing library of more than 12,000 movies and television episodes from Netflix.


    Instantly streaming movies and TV episodes from Netflix on the BD-P2550 and BD-P2500 is done through a wired broadband connection and a Netflix Queue-based user interface. Netflix members visit the Netflix Web site to add movies and TV episodes to their individual instant Queues. Those choices will automatically be displayed on members‘ TVs and available to
    watch instantly through the Samsung players. Once selected, movies will begin playing in as little as 30 seconds.


    With the players‘ accompanying remote control, Netflix members will be able to browse and make selections right on the TV screen and also have the ability to read synopses and rate
    movies. In addition, they will have the option of fast-forwarding and rewinding the video stream.


    Samsung‘s Blu-ray players offer Full HD 1080p playback and feature the HQV processing chip for the highest quality viewing of Blu-ray discs and astounding upconversion of standard DVDs. The players also provide an immersive HD home theater experience with capabilities to decode high-resolution multi-channel digital audio soundtracks and 7.1-channel analogue audio outputs.
