Bradley Cooper formally approached to play lance Armstrong in biopic

MUMBAI: Director J.J. Abrams has formally approached Bradley Cooper to star in a biopic on the rise and fall from grace of cyclist Lance Armstrong.

Abrams confirmed that he is considering Cooper for the role after the latter reached out to him via e-mail. Cooper sent me an e-mail and we have been talking,” contactmusic.com quoted Abrams as saying.

Sometime ago, Cooper had expressed his desire to portray the disgraced cyclist after he was stripped of his titles between 1999 and 2005 when it was revealed that he had taken performance-enhancing drugs.

“I would be interested in playing Armstrong. I think he is fascinating. What a fascinating character. I remember Matt Damon was going to do his autobiography at one point years ago,” Cooper had said in an interview.

Damon and Matthew McConaughey are also contenders to play the infamous cyclist in the project.

  • ‘Star Wars’ to be re-booted with a new film

‘Star Wars’ to be re-booted with a new film

MUMBAI: After a bevy of emails and phone calls, the formalities have been wrapped up, and a new Star Wars film will be made.

J.J. Abrams will direct ‘Star Wars: Episode VII‘, the first of a new series of Star Wars films to come from Lucasfilm under Kathleen Kennedy ‘Lincoln‘. Abrams will be directing and Michael Arndt will write the screenplay.

Kennedy said, “It‘s very exciting to have J.J. aboard leading the charge as we set off to make a new Star Wars movie. J.J. is the perfect director to helm this. Beyond having such great instincts as a filmmaker, he has an intuitive understanding of this franchise. He understands the essence of the Star Wars experience, and will bring that talent to create an unforgettable motion picture.”

Lucas said, “I‘ve consistently been impressed with J.J. as a filmmaker and storyteller. He‘s an ideal choice to direct the new Star Wars film and the legacy couldn‘t be in better hands.”

J.J. Abrams said, “To be a part of the next chapter of the Star Wars saga, to collaborate with Kathy Kennedy and this remarkable group of people, is an absolute honour. I may be even more grateful to George Lucas now than I was as a kid.”

J.J, his longtime producing partner Bryan Burk, and Bad Robot are on board to produce along with Kathleen Kennedy under the Disney | Lucasfilm banner.

Also consulting on the project are Lawrence Kasdan and Simon Kinberg. Kasdan has a long history with Lucasfilm, as screenwriter on ‘The Empire Strikes Back‘, ‘Raiders of the Lost Ark‘ and ‘Return of the Jedi‘. Kinberg was writer on ‘Sherlock Holmes‘ and ‘Mr. and Mrs. Smith‘.

Abrams and his production company Bad Robot have made films like ‘Star Trek‘, ‘Super 8‘, ‘Mission: Impossible Ghost Protocol‘ and ‘Star Trek Into Darkness‘. Abrams has worked with Lucasfilm‘s postproduction facilities, Industrial Light & Magic and Skywalker Sound, on all of the films that he has directed, beginning with ‘Mission: Impossible III‘. He also created or co-created television series like ‘Felicity‘, ‘Alias‘, ‘Lost‘ and ‘Fringe‘.

Past ‘Star Wars‘ veterans, dating back to the classic trilogy, offered words of praise from their direct experience with Abrams: Visual Effects Supervisor Dennis Muren, ASC, whose credits include the original Star Wars trilogy as well as landmark films such as E.T. and Jurassic Park, also worked with Abrams on Super 8.

Muren said, “He puts everything he has into his work. He totally immerses himself. He‘s got such a visual eye, which is so important to the Star Wars films. It seems that a lot of the same things that were in George when he made the first Star Wars films are also in J.J. I think he‘s going to fit into the other movies perfectly, with the energy that J.J. has. We‘re kick-starting Star Wars again with dynamite. It will knock people out, including the people who get to work on it. I think it‘s a great choice.”

Ben Burtt, responsible for Star Wars sounds as Darth Vader‘s breathing, R2-D2‘s beeps and the classic lightsaber, has worked with Abrams as sound designer and sound editor on Star Trek and Super 8.

Burtt said, “J.J represents the next generation of filmmakers from those that were making Star Wars when I started. When he was a teen, he was a fan of Star Wars, and a great deal of his love for movies came out of his reaction of that first Star Wars film. You feel that he‘s already invested so many years in it, and he‘s going to propel it forward in a new way. In other words, you‘re having a fan who has grown up and developed tremendous directorial skills finding himself at the steering wheel to take the franchise into the next stage. I feel like I‘m there watching history turn over from one era to another.”

Matthew Wood, who served as supervising sound editor on Super 8, similarly grew up as a Star Wars fan before working on the films through the prequels. He said, “Working with him, it was so obvious to me that J.J. and I have the same nostalgic love of that era. Now we have someone from that generation who is going to be at the helm of the Star Wars franchise that I‘ve known and worked on, so it‘s a great circle. Just seeing what he did with Super 8 and capturing those moments, and knowing what was so special about that era, it‘s going to speak to a new generation of audience as well.”

‘Argo’ continues awards momentum with Guild wins

MUMBAI: ‘Argo‘ has emerged as the favourite to win the Best Picture Oscar after it won the Producers Guild of America (PGA) award for best film and the Screen Actors Guild (Sag) ensemble award over the weekend.

Earlier in the month the film had won Golden Globe Awards and Critics Choice Awards for picture and director. Elsewhere ‘Lincoln‘ got two Sag awards for Daniel Day Lewis and Tommy Lee Jones. Anne Hathway won a supporting Sag trophy for her role in the musical ‘Les Miserables‘.

‘Silver Linings Playbook‘ which had been considered a favourite to win the Sag ensemble got just one trophy for Jennifer Lawrence.

Last year three of the four Sag winners went on to win Oscar awards. The directors Guild of America (DGA) awards are on Saturday. While Benn Affleck who made ‘Argo‘ could win that as well, he will not win the Oscar for best director as he has not been nominated.

MUMBAI: Arnold Schwarzenegger is set to star in Terminator 5.

The 65-year-old action hero, who starred in the first three installments of the film franchise, said during promotion for his latest movie ‘The Last Stand‘ that he will star in the forthcoming film, it has been reported.

Schwarzenegger is pleased with the way the motion picture is taking after the film‘s bosses hired some “really quality writers”.

“They‘re writing right now Terminator 5. There have been some writers on it for the last year-and-a-half and they could not pull it off. We have told them over and over that they are going in the wrong direction, now they‘ve finally got rid of those writers and they‘ve got new really quality writers. Now they‘re going in the right direction. I think this year the script will be finished and we will be able to go into pre-production,” he observed.

Julian Assange hits out The Fifth Estate accusing it of fanning the flames

MUMBAI: WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange has hit out on The Fifth Estate, said to be based on WikiLeaks, his secret-spilling website and has termed it to be a “massive propaganda attack”.

Speaking to students at Britain‘s prestigious Oxford University by videolink from the Ecuadoran embassy in London, Assange said that he had acquired a copy of the script for The Fifth Estate, that is due to release in November next.

“It is a lie upon lie. The movie is a massive propaganda attack on WikiLeaks and the character of my staff,” Assange is reported to have said.

Assange also accused the film for “fanning the flames” of war against Iran by implying that the Islamic republic was working on a nuclear bomb. Reading from the script, he said the opening scene was set inside a military complex in Iran with documents containing nuclear symbols.

“How does this have anything to do with us?” Assange questioned.

DreamWorks Studios had on Tuesday announced that it had begun shooting the WikiLeaks film that stars British actor Benedict Cumberbatch as Assange.

Russel Crowe set to host two AACTA award ceremonies

MUMBAI: Russell Crowe will host two of the Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts‘ upcoming trio of awards ceremonies that will commence with the AACTA International awards. The event will be held in Los Angeles on 26 January, which also happens to be Australia Day.

Taking the AACTA‘s awards season forward will be a luncheon party on 28 January where the craft award and the prestigious Raymond Longford Award for lifetime achievement will be given. The star will then fly to Sydney to host the main awards ceremony on 30 January.

Following the withdrawal of local actor Hugh Sheridan who cited a scheduling conflict Crowe is stepping in to the host the events. The actor will join Geoffrey Rush (AACTA president) and Cate Blanchett (Australian Film Institute-AACTA Ambassador) in the lineup of AACTA awards presenters.

Leading the nominations for the second annual AACTA Awards is indigenous hit musical The Sapphires, which was named on Wednesday as the top-grossing Australian film at the box office in 2012, taking AUS$14.5 million ($15.3 million) in its home territory.

The Sapphires is up for a total of 12 awards, including best film, where it is vying for the top prize against Jonathan Teplitzsky‘s Burning Man, Cate Shortland‘s Lore and Kieran D‘Arcy-Smith‘s Wish You Were Here.

AACTA CEO Damian Trewhella said that Crowe has shown his commitment to the Australian Academy since its launch 18 months ago.

“Russell Crowe is a formidable talent whose work has been recognized through peer assessed awards the world over, including through the Oscars, BAFTAs and AFI Awards,” Trewhella said.

“That Russell is hosting two events for the Australian Academy in L.A. and Sydney within the space of a week attests to both his support of the Australian screen industry, and his leadership with AACTA as we promote a voice for the Australian industry in the U.S,” he added.

Crowe will be reunited with his Les Miserables co-star Hugh Jackman who is up for best actor at the AACTA International Awards.

  • Chinese censors clip Cloud Atlas by 40 minutes

Chinese censors clip Cloud Atlas by 40 minutes

MUMBAI: Chinese viewers of Cloud Atlas will have to make do with a version that’s missing 40 minutes from the original shown everywhere else in the world.

According to reports in the Chinese media, Cloud Atlas released in Beijing last Monday night in a 130-minute cut much shorter than the 169-minute version released worldwide (including Hong Kong, which sustains a film censorship system independent from mainland China). It is however understood that the film’s directing trio Andy Wachowski, his sister Lanaand and Germany’s Tom Tykwer were not involved in the re-edit.

Speaking to the Chinese press before the film’s premiere, they said that they acknowledged the constraints of releasing the film in China, but they trusted the editing qualities of the film’s Chinese co-producers, Dreams of the Dragon Pictures.

A report in the Shanghai-based Dongfang Daily had reported that expository sequences and passionate love scenes were edited out from the film which opens in China on 31 January while gory sequences depicting a character being shot in the head or another having his throat slit remained.

At the center of this screen adaptation of novelist David Mitchell’s multi-stranded Cloud Atlas is a romantic relationship between budding composer Robert Frobisher (played by Ben Whishaw) and his Cambridge schoolmate Rufus Sixsmith (James D’Arcy) – and it is high likely that scenes from this thread were left off the Chinese version of the film, as same-sex romances remain a taboo for Chinese censors.

In another scene, set in a 22nd century Korean city called Neo-Seoul, a human-replicant waitress (played by Chinese actress Zhou Xun) is shown having sex with her foreman, an image which could run into problems with the authorities.

Cloud Atlas is the second foreign production bowing in China in a censored version in as many weeks. Skyfall, which was released in the country last Monday, was released with a scene of the killing of a Chinese doorman cut out and subtitles which obscured the on-screen lines about a prostitution ring in Macau and torture meted out by Chinese intelligence services.
