MUMBAI: Asif Kapadia – director of the documentary ‘Senna’, based on the life of Formula One driver Ayrton Senna, is slated to now document the life of the late singer/songwriter Amy Winehouse in an untitled documentary. Focus Features would be introducing the project to buyers at Cannes this year.
Winehouse died of alcohol poisoning in 2011, five years after rising to international fame with her “Back to Black” album.
‘Senna‘ producer James Gay-Rees will produce through it Playmaker Films, Gay-Rees and Kapadia’s new production entity. The film will be co-produced by Universal Music.
“This is an incredibly modern, emotional and relevant film that has the power to capture the zeitgeist and shine a light on the world we live in, in a way that very few films can,” Kapadia and Gay-Rees said. “Amy was a once-in-a-generation talent who captured everyone’s attention; she wrote and sung from the heart and everyone fell under her spell. But tragically Amy seemed to fall apart under the relentless media attention, her troubled relationships, her global success and precarious lifestyle,” they further added.
