  • Deepa Mehta helming adaptation of Rushdie’s Midnight’s Children

    MUMBAI: Salman Rushdie‘s international best-selling novel ‘Midnight ‘s Children‘ is being made into an English film by Oscar-nominee Deepa Mehta.


    Renamed Winds of Change, the film stars Irrfan Khan, Rahul Bose, Nandita Das, Shabana Azmi, Seema Biswas and Soha Ali Khan among others.


    Midnight‘s Children depicts the incidents before and after the Independence and the partition of India through the eyes of its protagonist Saleem Sinai, whose birthday coincides with the birth of Independent India on 15 August 1947. 


    The film is being shot in Sri Lanka because Mehta had sworn off India following her nightmare experience shooting Water at Varanasi. The film was subsequently shot in Sri Lanka.


    But shooting in the country could yet run into problems because in the late 1990s, the BBC‘s plan to film a five-part mini-series of the novel with Rahul Bose in the lead ran into trouble due to pressure from the Muslim community in the country. Subsequently, the filming permit was revoked and the project was stalled.


    The film‘s shooting is due to start in Sri Lanka next month.

  • Udaan producer signs Harvey Keital for his next

    MUMBAI: Udaan producer Sanjay Singh has roped in legendary Hollywood artiste Harvey Keitel for his next film Against Itself to be directed by National Award winner Kranti Kanade.


    The film that will narrate the story of a secular school master struggling against anti-Gandhian forces, will have Keitel essay the pivotal role.
     
    Singh, whose Udaan got the honour of being screened at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival and also boasts of a long list of 14 international and Indian awards including the Filmfare, is of the belief that Against Itself has a huge international potential and with Keital in the lead, he aims to reach both Indian and global audiences.


    Keital is known for his performances in some best-known Hollywood films like Quentin Tarantino‘s Reservoir Dogs and Pulp Fiction, Jane Campion‘s The Piano and Holy Smoke, Martin Scorsese‘s Mean Streets, Who‘s That Knocking At My Door and Taxi Driver, Ridley Scott‘s The Duellists and Thelma and Louise.
     

  • Om Books launches ‘Dialogues of Pyaasa’

    MUMBAI: Om Books International, in association with Hyphen Films, has released Nasreen Munni Kabir’s Dialogue of Pyaasa, Guru Dutt‘s Immortal Classic.


    The book costs Rs 450 and is accompanied by a DVD of Pyaasa.


    The book was released by Karan Johar in the presence of the late Guru Dutt‘s son Arun Dutt, sister Lalitha Lajmi and Ajay Mago, Publisher, Om Books International.


    The dialogue book consists of the film‘s dialogue by Abrar Alvi and songs/poems by Sahir Ludhianvi. These are presented in Hindi, Urdu and English illustrated with photographs of Dutt and his films. It starts with an extensive commentary by Nasreen Munni Kabir.


    Speaking at the book launch, Kabir commented, “The intention here is to bring together in a single publication the complete dialogue and songs, so as to fully appreciate their extraordinary depth, and in the commentary and introduction, to provide a fresh in-depth look at Pyaasa by pulling together detailed reference material, personal views, anecdotal insights, film analysis and history which would otherwise be lost.”


    Mago said, “I have grown up in a household where Guru Dutt and his films were a frequent topic of discussion amongst family members who were avid cinema buffs. So my childhood years were peppered with lively debates on Kaagaz ke Phool, Sahib, Biwi aur Ghulam, Baaz, and of course Pyaasa. It was only recently that I rediscovered the charm and sheer poetry of Guru Dutt‘s Pyaasa, with its unforgettable songs by Sahir. It is, therefore, an honour for Om Books International to publish The Dialogue of Pyaasa: Guru Dutt‘s Immortal Classic, in association with Hyphen Films.   • Jennifer Lopez cousin in Bhindi Bazar Inc

    MUMBAI: Since the last two years, there have been a lot of crossovers with our film artistes going to Hollywood to do a film and vice versa. The latest is that Caterina Lopez, cousin of actor-singer Jennifer Lopez, has bagged a role in a Bollywood film, Bhindi Bazaar Inc.


    Sources say that the performer will feature in a song sequence for the film. “When they approached me for this sexy item number, I jumped up at it. And this gave me the perfect chance to come and work in Mumbai, which is the New York of India,” Caterina is quoted to have revealed.


    Bhindi Bazaar Inc, being shot in Mumbai, is set in the backdrop of pickpocketing that its director Ankush Bhatt feels is more heroic than a gangster killing with a gun.


    The debutant actress said that Shah Rukh Khan was her favourite figure in the Indian cinema industry. “I think he is very charming and I‘ve had this big crush on him. I hope to meet him soon,” she said.

  • Soha Ali Khan shares screen space with mother in Life Goes On

    MUMBAI: The Soha Ali Khan starrer Sangeeta Datta-directed film Life Goes On is complete and is set to release in the UK on 11 March.


    The British film, shot entirely in London, is said to be loosely based on Shakespeare‘s ‘King Lear‘.


    The film has Soha‘s mother Sharmila Tagore sharing screen space with Soha.


    Avers Soha, “I wanted to share some filmography with my mom. I am always asked, ‘When are we going to see you and Sharmilaji together on screen, or you and your brother?‘ The script was written accordingly to suit both my mother and me.”


    The film also features Om Puri and Girish Kanard.
     

  • The Fighter to release in India on 25 February

    MUMBAI: Oscar-nominated film The Fighter is set to hit Indian screens on 25 February two days before the Academy Awards.


    The film, starring Christian Bale and Mark Wahlberg, is about two brothers Dicky Ecklund (Bale) and Micky Ward (Wahlberg) who, against all odds, come together to train for an historic title bout that will unite their fractured family and redeem their past.


    Directed by David O. Russell, the film has been nominated in six categories at the Oscars – best picture, best actor in a supporting role for Bale, best actress in a supporting role for Amy Adams and Melissa Leo, best director for Russell, best writing (original screenplay) and best editing.

  • Aamir Khan to play a baddie in YRF’s Dhoom 3

    MUMBAI: Since some time there was a talk that Yash Raj Films was seriously considering to cast Aamir Khan in Dhoom 3.


    But now it has been confirmed that Khan will do the film and that to in a negative role. Khan took the decision after a long meeting he had with Yash Chopra and Aditya Chopra at his Bandra residence on Monday night. The film will also star Dhoom regulars Abhishek Bachchan and Uday Chopra.


    Confirming the news Khan said, “It is indeed a pleasure to be working with Yashji and Adi (Aditya Chopra) once again. Dhoom is a great franchise, is very entertaining and full of fun. Each time I hear the theme tune of the film, it brings a swing to my step. The script of Victor (Vijay Krishna Acharya) really won me over and I look forward to working with him.”


    Acharya, who wrote Dhoom and Dhoom 2 and also directed Tashan, will direct the film.


    It may be recalled that last year in June, Khan had met the Chopras who gave Aamir an idea of how they envisaged him in Dhoom 3. A detailed script narration followed thereafter on 13 August. Aamir had liked what he heard. For some time thereafter, Aamir mulled if he should do the role or not. And finally, he signed on the dotted line.


    Khan last worked for the YRF banner in Fanaa.


    Dhoom3 will go on the floors later this year and is slated for release around Christmas next year.


    It may be recalled that earlier John Abraham and Hrithik Roshan had played baddies in the first and the second part respectively.

  • One-shot film ‘Six Hours With Terrorists’ to hit screens in March

    MUMBAI: Debutant directors come out with new ideas never tried before. A few years ago in 2008, director Wilson Louis had canned a three-minute song in one shot.


    Going further, young filmmaker Karan Kashyap has shot a film of two hours and seventeen minutes in one shot on a single camera. The film, Six Hours With Terrorists, is expected to hit the silver screen next month.


    The makers of the film are planning to send the entry to the Guinness Book of World Records. “It was not easy for me and my team to achieve this task,” Kashyap says. “I approached several producers and actors with my script and tried to convince them to make a movie, but in vain. Finally, Star Smile Productions liked my concept and the project took off,‘ he adds. 


    Producer Arun Deodhar is of the view that such concepts take a great deal of hard work. “I am extremely happy by the outcome of the project and must say that all the efforts put in by these young people have yielded fruits. We intend to promote out-of-the-box ideas like these through movies and motivate young talent of the country,” he avers.


    Talking of the film, Kashayp unfolds the outline. The film revolves around Rehman who is held hostage by three terrorists. “We have used several references from the 26/11 terror attacks in Mumbai in terms of the costumes and how three terrorists had held the residents of Nariman House as hostage during the period,” Kashyap reveals.


    A crew of more than 40 people, including six actors, was literally locked up in a bungalow on the outskirts of Mumbai. They rehearsed their roles for 54 days before the final shot was canned.


    So far, there have been two such ‘one shot‘ movies – Russian Arc, the duration of which was one hour and 38 minutes, and PVC 1 which was 85-minute long.
     

  • Raghav Bahl’s movie biz revival plan

    MUMBAI: Knocked down by a model that relied heavily on acquisitions, Network18 founder-promoter Raghav Bahl has reworked on the movie production business that he has moved to a joint venture company with Viacom as a partner.


    Having snapped up The Indian Film Company that was listed on London‘s Alternative Investment Market (AIM), Bahl will now have movies rolled out from Viacom18, the company that also houses Hindi general entertainment channel Colors, MTV India, Nick and Vh1.


    A cautious spender this time, Bahl has earmarked Rs 1.20 billion for a seven-movie slate that will run through early 2012. The peak funding requirement in a three-year horizon will be Rs 2.50 billion, sources familiar with the business plan say.


    The early adventure has left the man who has built a television news and entertainment empire in quick time. But Bahl realises deep within that movies, however risky in nature, will have to constitute an important piece of the growth story, feeding content to Colors, the upcoming movie channel, a repositioned MTV and a growing Nick while pursuing the box office fortunes independently.


    “We are in no hurry to deploy capital. We are in no hurry to produce the costliest movie. We are in a hurry to get it right,” says Viacom18 Motion Pictures chief operating officer Vikram Malhotra.


    For two years in a row, Bahl had got it right as The Indian Film Company got engaged in movies like Ghajini, Singh is Kinng, Jab We Met, Welcome and Golmaal Returns. But then came the downturn, capital became scarce and the studio churned out more flops than hits.


    “The high-risk acquisition model suited the initial years when capital was easily available. Then came the bad years and the entire business environment for the film industry went through a turbulent change. TIFC lost more in value than the sector and there was need for a restructuring,” admits Malhotra.


    TIFC posted a net loss of ?4.56 million for the fiscal ended 31 March 2010 compared to a net profit of ?3.89 million a year ago. Revenue fell to ?19.88 million, as against ?40.90 million in FY‘09.


    Nine films were released during FY‘10, all of which bombed at the box office. These included Shortkut – The Con is On, Luck, Life Partner, Fruit ‘N‘ Nut, London Dreams, Rann, Striker, Road, Movie and Hum Tum Aur Ghost.


    The hard lesson learnt, Viacom18 Motion Pictures (rebranded) has decided to do away with buying “ready off the shelf” movies. The focus will be on own productions and co-productions where the company will be involved at every stage of the production process.


    “We will not make first copy ready film acquisitions. The task is to build sustainability and capability with a strong focus on profitability. We are building the business brick-by-brick,” says Malhotra.


    Bahl‘s revival plan couldn‘t have come at a better time. The costs, gone beserk in the last few years, have corrected to a large extent. Also, the price of satellite TV telecast rights for movies is at a new high due to competition from the broadcasters, offering film producers a strong revenue opportunity outside the box office overhang. The worry is the marketing expense, which still remains high, but Viacom18 Motion Pictures is in a competitive advantageous position where it can leverage on its broadcasting power to shave off the flab.


    “Our marketing costs will be 10-15 per cent lower due to the wide reach of our channels like Colors, MTV and Nick. There is a need for further correction in star costs but we will spend our pennies very carefully,” says Malhotra, the new guard head Bahl is betting on to turnaround the movie business.


    Viacom18 Motion Pictures will kick off its slate with a rom-com titled ‘Tanu Weds Manu‘ that will hit the screens on 25 February. This will be followed by two films that are co-productions with Anurag Kashyap – Michael (Working Title) & Shaitan. These films are set for release in the first quarter of the next fiscal year.


    The most expensive movie in the slate is the Abbas Mustan-directed Players which is built on a budget of over Rs 400 million.


    The roster also includes Gang of Waseeypur (2 Series), Buddah (starring Amitabh Bachchan) by Puri Jaganathan, and David Dhawan‘s Chashme Baddoor.


    “We will weigh the financial success of each movie. The first two years will be a crucial build-up. In the third year, we will review the business and change track accordingly,” says Malhotra.


    The scale-up plan will involve creating franchise properties that will have a sliding cost model while upping box office revenues. “Players is positioned as a franchise property. We plan to have 2-3 properties in 2012. We are also going to have a minimum threshold of six movie releases a year,” says Malhotra.


    An important part of the gameplan is to produce movies in the urban-youth genre under the brand of ‘Tipping Point Films‘. This kind of targeted movies will also be content for MTV.


    “We have projects in the urban-youth genre in co-production with Irock Media,” says Malhotra.


    Viacom18 Motion Pictures will distribute its own movies and has outfits in Mumbai, Delhi and UP territories. The distribution network is being expanded to the South markets, Rajasthan and the North.


    “We have several advantages as we are part of a broadcasting network and Colors currently happens to be the leading acquirer of motion pictures content.We aim to be among the top three studios in the country within three years,” says Malhotra.


    In the highly unpredictable movie industry, Bahl has to get it right this time to reach the top of the ladder.

  • Reliance Big Cinemas launches Fans Choice awards

    MUMBAI: Reliance Big Cinemas, a subsidiary of the Reliance Anil Dhirubhai Ambani Group (R-ADAG), has launched a new award called the Fans Choice Awards 2011.


    The award has been instituted to choose the best entertainers of 2010 from Hindi, Tamil and Telugu films.


    The awards will be solely based on online voting on the Big Cinemas fans page on Facebook.


    The fans of the group also stand a chance to win complimentary movie tickets and merchandise after voting.


    Said Reliance MediaWorks CEO Anil Arjun in a press statement, “‘We have an active and fast-growing presence of consumers across our online engagement mediums and we see immense opportunity in leveraging their social behaviours and take consumer engagement to the next level.”


    Starting Tuesday, fans can vote for their favourites for 10 Hindi film categories and five Tamil and Telugu film categories each, including best actor (male and female), best film and best director, among others.


    The highest voted entertainers from combined votes in each category for all three languages would be announced on 3 March on the Facebook fan page of Big Cinemas.
