  • Joker: Half baked and farcical

    Joker: Half baked and farcical

Mumbai: Joker, when planned, was an ambitious venture, with a lot of special effects and 3D release plans. Somewhere along the line, all the ambitions were pushed back till the film got its unceremonious release. It is surprising that there have been no efforts to promote the film.

The  makers as well as the artistes seem to have shied away from the project. After watching the film, one knows why. Joker is described by the producers as fantasy-adventure film. This is not quite an apt description. The problem is that the film fits into no genre; it is just an outcome of the maker‘s fancy. The only adventure one can think of is the very idea of making this film.

Akshay Kumar is some sort of whiz in the US. An American group has invested billions of dollars in him so he can communicate with aliens. Kumar‘s two-year term for doing this job is over and it can‘t be extended. To make matters worse, one of his detractors in the group wants to take over the control of the project. However, he is granted a single month‘s extension. But Kumar is called back to his native village on account of his father‘s (Darshan Jariwala) illness. He returns to his village, Paglapur, with Sonakshi Sinha, his ‘friend‘, in tow.

Paglapur is an orphan village in that, during partition, though it remained in India it did not fall within the boundaries of any state despite bordering three of them. The village has no representation in any government and hence no water supply nor electricity and no education. The village was once well known for its mental hospital but its inmates broke loose and burnt the whole village the very night a British surveyor was on his way to the village to decide on its fate. He had to turn back without doing his job.

Kumar‘s father was not unwell after all and this was a ploy to get him to return. But, seeing the plight of his orphan village, he decides to stay back and do something that will get his village recognition. He meets three ministers all of whom refuse to take the responsibility since the village is not within their vote bank. Helpless, Kumar decides to do something drastic to draw the media and the ministers‘ attention to his village. He fabricates a story about UFOs and aliens landing in his village. The alien, one of the villagers, is decorated with various colours, vegetables and fruits. He is also an ace runner as he would need a quick escape if followed.

The word spreads: the village is invaded by media of all hues, with the three politicians quick to follow. As if by miracle, the village gets electricity and water from all the three states around it. There is illumination all round and there is the mandatory nachna-gaana. That is what Sinha is in the cast for, besides the item girls brought in as is the norm nowadays.

But the bubble of lies and fabricated aliens has to burst. Kumar‘s American detractor can‘t digest the idea of an alien having come to Akshay‘s village. He arrives soon enough to nail the fraud. Also, the three neighbouring states may now want to own Paglapur but it seems the US is also very concerned and sends not only an armed-to-the-teeth FBI force but also tanks and helicopters to kill the aliens which it sees as a potential threat to its own safety! The fraud is exposed and the electricity and water supply vanish from the village as miraculously as they had arrived. Paglapur is orphaned again.

But to paraphrase an old belief in relation to this film: ‘Jiska koi nahi hai, uska Alien hotta hai‘, a spaceship and an alien soon descends on Paglapur. They had received Kumar‘s communication two years earlier but took that much time to verify his credentials before coming down! While departing, the alien gifts the village an oil field and everybody celebrates by showering in this gushing oil.

Joker, at best, can be described as a farce. Thus what the bunch of actors do is buffoonery; there is no scope for acting or impact. Kumar‘s fans may be disappointed since he does not have a single action scene. Sinha is just a prop. Rest of the cast is always in group and whatever they do is not acting. The film has a couple of good tunes which, alas, are not in tune with the events on screen.

Joker is a half-baked, ill-conceived film doomed to disaster.

MUMBAI: Fresh from its success of Ek Tha Tiger, Yash Raj Films has announced its next project Gunday that will star Ranveer Singh and Arjun Kapoor in lead roles.

The film is based amidst the most turbulent times in the history of Kolkata, then Calcutta, from 1971 to1988, where Bikram and Bala rose from being small time wagon breakers and coal thieves to becoming the biggest and most powerful black marketing mafia-men.

A rare combination of vigour and wit, the two were inseparable and the city of Calcutta swore by their friendship then. As their notoriety became the stuff of legends, the people of the sprawling city started calling these two carefree rebels as Gunday.

Hunt is on for the leading lady who would play a stellar role in the film, while the cast will be announced shortly.

Incidentally, the film would be both Ranveer and Arjun‘s third film with YRF and the first time when these two have been featured together.

  • Ram Gopal Varma to recreate lobby of Taj Mahal Hotel for film based on 26/11 terror attacks

Ram Gopal Varma to recreate lobby of Taj Mahal Hotel for film based on 26/11 terror attacks

MUMBAI: After being granted limited access to the CST railway station to shoot his ambitious project based on the 26/11 terror attacks in Mumbai, Ram Gopal Varma‘s request to film at the Taj Mahal Palace and Tower Hotel, Colaba has been turned down.

The reason behind the non-clearance of the filmmaker‘s request is the fact that the authorities are not willing to revisit the unfortunate incident, even through a film. The hotel became the venue for a lot of bloodbath during the terrorists‘ siege on the city.

The disappointed director has revealed that after shooting some sequences at CST, he will shoot the rest of the gory and firing scenes on another set.

It may be interesting to know that Varma has instead recreated the entire lobby of the Colaba hotel at another suburban hotel in Juhu, which is currently being rented for shootings. The entire set has been created by art director Uday Singh and has cost the filmmaker Rs 2.5 crore.

“It could be traumatic for many to see the recreation of that horrible tragedy. For me, in the context of the attacks, a five-star hotel is the symbol of human achievement in terms of splendour. To see blood flowing on its polished floors and its pristine walls and artifacts there to be riddled with bullets are living testimony of the ultimate barbarism Man is capable of doing,” said Mr Varma.

  • UTV Challenges I and B Ministry’s directive on non-smoking scrolls in films

UTV Challenges I and B Ministry’s directive on non-smoking scrolls in films

New Delhi: Delhi High Court on Monday sent notices to the Information and Broadcasting and Health Ministries and the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) following a petition by the producers of the Bollywood film Heroine.

The petition by UTV Software Communication, which has produced the Kareena Kapoor-starrer (slated for release on 21 September), has challenged the I&B Ministry for imposing the mandatory condition of displaying a “static” anti-smoking message during smoking scenes in the film.

Justice Rajiv Shakdhar sought responses of the respondents by 10 September and directed the CBFC to watch the film and file its report in a sealed cover before the next date of hearing.

The petitioner sought quashing of the I&B ministry‘s 2 August letter imposing the condition on filmmakers to display the “static” anti-smoking message during smoking scenes.

The petitioner has urged that the CBFC should issue the certificate for the release of the film without any conditions.

The filmmaker said that the I&B Ministry has in its letter issued on 2 August requested the CBFC to advise filmmakers to ensure “a 20-second anti-smoking message as approved by the Health Ministry with voice over of the actors who are seen smoking in the film to be displayed at the beginning and in the middle (after interval) of the film.”

The ministry had issued the letter pursuant to its 27 October 2011 notification in terms of the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products (Prohibition of Advertisement and Regulation of Trade and Commerce, Production, Supply) Rules.

The petitioner alleged that in addition to this, the ministry imposed another condition: that “a static anti-smoking message be displayed for the duration of smoking scene in the film”, and urged the court to get these conditions removed as it will distract the audience from the main script.
