Jalpari sent to the Oscars as direct entry

MUMBAI: Critically acclaimed film Jalpari – The Desert Mermaid has been submitted as a direct entry for the Oscars.

Ultra Distributors CMD Sushilkumar Agrawal said, "In all, 17 films were competing to be sent as India‘s official entry for the foreign film category at the Oscars. Every film had a potential in some way or the other way to compete for the Oscars, but unfortunately only one film can go as an official entry from India. The original story and concept is the USP of our film. The blazing subject, the treatment of the film and the powerful performances has the potential to compete to the Oscars. So we decided to submit our film as a direct entry for the Academy Awards."

Jalpari… is directed by Nila Madhab Panda director of award winning I Am Kalam. The film deals with the various predicaments that a girl child encounters in rural India and also addresses the divide between rural and urban India. The film depicts India‘s national shame ‘female foeticide‘ in a lighter way, without getting preachy.

The distributor has submitted the film to the Academy of Motion Pictures and its team will shortly visit US for promotion of the film and it exhibition.

Recently Jalpari… received the Audience Choice Award at the Minsk International Film Festival in Belarus and selected as an official entry for International Film Festival in Montreal that will take place in March next year and many other international film festivals.

Amitabh Bachchan to reprise the role of Kabuliwala

MUMBAI: French-Afghan filmmaker Atiq Rahimi is in plans to cast Amitabh Bachchan in a film based on Rabindranath Tagore‘s story of an Afghan dry-fruit seller and his love for a little girl whom he takes as his daughter.

Though the story has been adapted a number of times for the big screen in the past, at least two versions of the tale have been made famous in films with Rahimi‘s being the third. It has been reported that Bachchan will reprise the role of the Kabuliwala made famous by Balraj Sahni in one of the earlier cinematic adaptations of the story. The film will be shot predominantly in Kolkata while parts of it will be shot in Afghanistan next year.

Though Bachchan is a veteran in the field of acting, people in the trade feel that it wouldn‘t be easy for him to fit into the shoes of actors who earlier played the iconic role of Rehmat Khan – Sahni and also that of Bengal‘s veteran actor Chhabi Biswas‘ interpretation of the same.

Bachchan has played an Afghan in Khuda Gawah. Meanwhile, he has been honoured by the Australian government for his remarkable contribution to the Indian cinema, which is celebrating its centenary year.

Said the veteran actor on his blog, "Another recognition by the Australian Government and its Commission here in Mumbai, in celebration for the 100 years of Indian Cinema, and my contribution towards fructifying the relations between the two countries… I am most humbled."

Last year, Bachchan was felicitated with an honorary doctorate by the Queensland University of Technology in Brisbane, Australia.

Censor Board clears Talaash with a U/A certificate

MUMBAI: The Censor Board has cleared Aamir Khan‘s upcoming release Talaash with a U/A certificate.

Film trade circles were apprehensive of the kind of certificate the Censors would dish out given the fact that the film is a suspense drama with serial killings at its core. Some even feared that the film may be deemed unfit for kids and teenagers and hence would be given an ‘A‘ certificate.

"However, Censor Board feels that there isn‘t anything overtly violent or disturbing about the film and hence have given it a U/A. "The film had also been passed without any cuts. That‘s a good win too", said a source.

This has been heartening for the film‘s producers Farhan Akhtar, Aamir Khan and Ritesh Sidhwani who wouldn‘t have to worry about curtailed footfalls for the film. Moreover, director Reema Kagti too is happy with the liberal stance of the Censor Board.

The film‘s running length is 2 hours and 14 minutes.
