    Dharmendra turns Rapper for YPD sequel

    MUMBAI: Yesteryear actor Dharmendra will be seen rapping for his upcoming movie ‘Yamla Pagla Deewana 2‘ (YPD 2).

    YPD 2 starring Dharmendra along with Sunny Deol, Bobby Deol, Neha Sharma, Kristina Akheeva and Annu Kapoor will also be featuring in the song. The song has been composed by Sharib-Toshi and choreographed by Caesar Gonsalves.

    A glimpse of this song has already been incorporated in the theatrical trailer of the film, which was unveiled in March.

    As reported in a press statement Neha said, "Dharam ji was the youngest Deol on the sets, during the making of this song. The coolest things to do were given to him. He has these hot ladies sitting around him in the video, which is a cute moment."

    "For the first time, we will be seeing Dharam ji doing Punjabi rap on the screen. His ‘rapper‘ look, with the rings on his fingers, is really special in this song," added the co-composer of the song Sharib Sabri.

    Chhota Bheem to take on Bombay Talkies & Shootout at Wadala this Friday

    MUMBAI: With the nationwide release of Chhota Bheem & The Throne of Bali popular animation character Chhota Bheem will be seen taking on real life stars from Bombay Talkies and Shootout at Wadala this Friday, 3 May. To be released in three languages – Hindi, Tamil and Telugu and in over five hundred theatres, this will be one of the largest ever-theatrical releases of an Indian animation film.

    "Children as an audience are more loyal. We are quite certain that Chhota Bheem & The Throne of Bali will emerge top release of the week and over time give one of the best box office returns," stated co producer Samir Jain.

    Allu Arvind‘s Geetha Film Distributors and Yash Raj Films will distribute the film in South and rest of India respectively. This is the second Chhota Bheem film to be released. The previous film, Chhota Bheem and the Curse of Damyaan was released in May 2012 and drew a collection of Rs 49.2 million, which is the highest ever collection for an Indian animation film.

    "Being our first release, the film was exhibited as a morning show in most theatres. But this time round the distribution, marketing and promotions are on a scale," added Jain.

    "This movie is based on the Bali islands and is an out-an-out adventure ride for kids with thrill, action, suspense and loads of fun. We did far-reaching research in Bali and ended up doing most recordings in Bali with its natural surroundings and have captured the sights and sounds. Shaan has sung the title song for the film," director Rajiv Chilaka commented.

    Excel Home Entertainment to launch ‘Life of Pi’ on 3D Blu-Ray & DVD

    MUMBAI: Home entertainment company Excel Home Entertainment will soon launch the Oscar winning "Life of Pi" on DVD, Blu-Ray and 3D in India.

    The movie is an adventure drama film based on Yann Martel‘s novel of the same name; directed by Oscar winning Director Ang Lee starring Irfan Khan, Tabu and debutant Suraj Sharma in the lead role. The movie has won four Academy awards in the categories best director, best cinematography, best visual effects and best original score.

    Excel Home Entertainment MD Muslim Kapasi said, "Other than a great plot, the movie has some outstanding performances. The fact that the movie has an Indian connect with an international touch makes it a huge hit among the Indian audience. Ang Lee‘s cinematic brilliance – Life of Pi has many Indians longing for a copy of the DVD and Blu-Ray. We are also offering the 3D version of the Blu-Ray. We are planning a huge release in terms of the numbers as well as a fitting launch spectacle."

    As part of the launch activities, movie buffs are invited to participate in an exclusive contest called "Found God!" wherein they can share their personal story on experiences with God. The winners have a chance to win a paid trip to Pondicherry and a day tour in Oscar winning VFX studio Rhythm & Hues.

    MUMBAI: Mira Nair’s latest film The Reluctant Fundamentalist opened the 69th Venice Film Festival. The movie was applauded with a standing ovation.

    When Nair was asked as to what inspires her as a creative person, she said, “There is one film that has inspired me for decades—the only film in the world I wished I had directed, a path breaking film that taught me to show both sides of a conflict with equal intelligence, pain and love. This is Gillo Pontecorvo’s great classic about the fight for Algerian Independence: The Battle of Algiers.”

    Incidentally, after the screening of the movie, Pontecorvo’s widow sought Nair out and said, “I am Gillo Pontecorvo’s widow, and I have come to tell you that Gillo lives in you.”

    Mira Nair’s film will release in India on 17 May. The motion picture is a touching and engaging story of a young man chasing corporate success on Wall Street. Post September 2011 tragedy in America, he finds himself embroiled in a conflict between his american dream, a hostage crisis, and the enduring call of his family‘s homeland.

    The film stars Kate Hudson, Kiefer Sutherland, Liev Schreiber, Riz Ahmed, Shabana Azmi and Om Puri.

    Sony Music and Eros International tie up with Raanjhanna

    MUMBAI: Eros International Media Limited has once again collaborated with Sony Music, to present the music Raanjhanaa. It is a romantic story starring Sonam Kapoor and south Indian actor Dhanush (of Kolavari Di fame) that will highlight the essence of love and simplicity.

    Sony Music will distribute and promote the music of the movie across all physical and digital platforms. The Hindi and Tamil original sound track of Raanjhanaa will be distributed under the co-branding of Sony Music and Eros Music labels.

    Set in the streets of Delhi and Varanasi, Raanjhanaa‘s music is composed by Oscar Winner A R Rahman.

    Farhan Akhtar and Myntra.com partner to promote MARD campaign

    MUMBAI: Farhan Akhtar has signed a deal with Myntra.com in order to strengthen his social cause MARD (Men Against Rape and Discrimination).

    As per the deal, Myntra.com has exclusively launched MARD T-shirts. This being a non-profit campaign, the t-shirts are priced at a manufacturing cost of Rs 199 and are available for both men and women.

    Post the Delhi rape incident, Akhtar channeled his anger in the form of a poem called ‘What is this country that I live in‘ which attracted a lot of attention. Amongst the sea of calls Akhtar received, an idea was born with JWT creative director Tarun Chauhan and Bling‘s Atul Kasbekar. The trio came together and created a platform called MARD.

    Myntra co-founder and CEO Mukesh Bansal said, "We believe that the India of tomorrow lies with the youth of today. Social awareness campaigns such as MARD are extremely impactful to educate and change the attitudes of people.     MUMBAI: Aditya Roy Kapoor and Shraddha Kapoor starrer Aashiqui 2 did very well through its first weekend to collect Rs 177.5 million.

    Hussain Kuwajerwala‘s Bollywood debut Shree turned out to be a non-starter.

    Balaji Telefilm‘s horror flick Ek Thi Daayan collected Rs 231 million in its first week. The general feeling from public is that the film needed at least one popular female face out of the three featured in the film.

    Action flick Commando – A One Man Army had a reasonably decent second week with collections of Rs 35 million, taking its two week total to Rs 208.5 million.

    ‘Dramdey‘ Nautanki Saala collected Rs 36.5 million in its second week; with this, the film‘s two week total stands at Rs 205.5 million.

    Chashme Baddoor was good in its third week. The film added Rs 25 million for the third week to take its three week tally to Rs 419.5 million.

    Himmatwala added Rs two million for the fourth week taking its four week total to Rs 432.5 million.

    Jolly LLB added Rs two million in its sixth week to take its six week total to Rs 314.2 million.

    MUMBAI: Director-producer Vipul shah who cast Vidhyut Jamwal in his recent movie Commando is now ready to make the sequel of the movie where action hero Akshay Kumar will supervise the newcomer.

    Shah who has already worked with the actor in four films – Aankhen, Waqt: The Race Against Time, Namastey London and Singh is Kinng. The director will collaborate with Kumar for Commando 2 as a consultant and advisor to supervise some of Jamwal‘s stunts.

    As reported in IANS Shah said, “According to me, Akshay is the best action hero in the country. He was the most excited when we started ‘Commando‘ with Vidyut and, in fact, we’d have liked Akshay to be more participative in ‘Commando’. However, he was too busy. But now in ‘Commando 2‘, we definitely intend to bring Akshay in.”

    NEW DELHI: Noting that he was conscious of the need for a level playing field for Indian filmmakers, information and broadcasting minister Manish Tewari has said ways would be found for the single window clearance for even producers from within the country.

    The Minister was referring to the single window clearance avenue announced recently for filmmakers from overseas.

    The Minister also announced that the Cinematograph Act 1952 was a very old law and was being ‘overhauled‘ in view of the changes in the industry since then.

    Speaking at the inauguration of the Centenary of Indian Cinema festival in the capital yesterday evening, the Minister said cinema epitomised the nation and its people.

    He said it was a tribute to the film industry that it had ‘grown despite the government and not because of the government‘.

    I and B secretary Uday Kumar Varma said the proposal for single window clearance includes a Film Promotion Board to attract foreign filmmakers to Indian shores. This would bring a paradigm shift and will be ready in a month‘s time.

    He said the film industry was Rs 90 billion strong in 2011 and was expected to grow to Rs 150 billion by 2016.

    Though the box office share globally was a mere seven per cent, Indian films had made it big overseas and two films had recently been released in more than fifty countries simultaneously.

    The opening of the festival was followed by the screening of the 1929 silent film ‘Throw of Dice‘ by Franz Osten. The screening was unique in that a live music orchestra of more than thirty persons conducted by maestro Nishat Khan. There were separate screens in front of the musicians so that they could react musically to what was happening on the large screen at Sirifort Auditorium which was filled to capacity.

    The minister also inaugurated an exhibition on "Indian Cinema 100 (Celebrating a Century: An Audio Visual Voyage)" and a make-shift mini-theatre named Gulshan Mahal which will screen silent films every day. Gulshan Mahal is the name of the building in Mumbai in which the Museum of Cinematic Arts is coming up.

    The six-day festival will conclude on 30 April with a play on the life and times of Dadasaheb Phalke by Aamir Raza Hussain.

    The festival is being held at the Siri Fort auditorium as well as other venues such as Jamia Milia Islamia University, Jawaharlal Nehru University, and India Habitat Center in an effort to bring the festival to the doorstep of film lovers in the capital.

    The extravaganza will include screenings of some classics as well as contemporary Indian films by master directors such as Bimal Roy, Guru Dutt, Shyam Benegal, Adoor Gopalakrishnan and others.

    MUMBAI: Bollywood legends filmmaker Yash Chopra, Rajesh Khanna and Asha Bhosale will be honored with the prestigious Dada Saheb Phalke Award which will be held on will be held on 30 April.

    Bhosale will be presented with the Phalke Ratna Award for her contribution in the music field.

    Khanna and Chopra will be given the award posthumously. On behalf of Yash Chopra his wife Pamela will receive the Saraswatibai Phalke Award.

    On the other hand one of India’s most prominent actors Rajesh Khanna will be honored as the first superstar of Indian cinema. Khanna‘s wife and actress Dimple Kapadia will also be receiving the Phalke Ever Memorable actor award.

    Also, in the list actor Akshay Kumar will receive the Best Actor award for ‘Rowdy Rathore’, Manoj Bajpai will get the Phalke Excellent Performance award for his work in ‘Gangs of Wasseyur’ and Irfan Khan will receive the Phalke Memorable Performance Award for Paan Singh Tomar. Govinda will be presented with the Phalke Versatile Actor award. Mala Sinha will be given the Phalke Icon Cine Artiste Award and Prem Chopra will be presented with the Phalke senior actor (negative role) Award while Newcomer Arjun Kapoor will be given with Phalke Debut Actor Award. Music composer-singer-actor Himesh Reshamiya will be presented with the Phalke Best Supporting Actor Award for Khiladi 786.
