    Raanjhanaa banned by Pakistan Censor Board

    NEW DELHI: The Dhanush-Sonam Kapoor starrer Raanjhanaa has been banned by the Pakistan Film Censor Board because of its alleged “controversial theme”.

    The Central Board of Film Censors in Pakistan banned the film shortly before its scheduled release, according to IMGC Global Entertainment CEO Amjad Rasheed, the importer of the film said.

    Pakistani singer Shiraz Uppal has also lent his voice for the title track of the film, composed by music maestro AR Rahman.

    The Anand L Rai-directed film was scheduled to release during the last week of June.
    Earlier, the Censor Board had also banned films like Ek Tha Tiger, GI Joe, Agent Vinod for their controversial themes and “anti-Pakistan” sentiments.

    Rasheed said that he received a letter from CBFC with directives to shelve the film‘s release.

    “The letter from CBFC states that the film portrays an inapt image of a Muslim girl (played by Sonam Kapoor) falling in love with a Hindu man and having an affair with him.”

    MUMBAI: The first look of UTV Motion Pictures‘ and Red Chillies Entertainments‘ Chennai Express created a frenzy amongst fans. To take that excitement further the much awaited music of Chennai Express was launched on Wednesday at a star studded event in Mumbai in the presence of actress Deepika Padukone, Shah Rukh Khan – actor and producer, Red Chillies Entertainments, Ronnie Screwvala – MD Disney UTV, Bhushan Kumar – chairman and MD T-Series director Rohit Shetty and music director duo Vishal-Shekhar.

    Songs released from the movie are already topping the popular music charts.

    The album boasts of an array of 8 songs from foot tapping dance numbers like ‘1234 Get on the dance floor‘ and ‘Ready Steady Po‘ to a soulful rendition like ‘Titli‘, from love songs to total entertainment ones like ‘Chipak Chipak Ke‘, ‘Tera Rasta Chhodon Na‘, ‘Kashmir Main,Tu Kanyakumari‘ and even the title track ‘Chennai Express‘ which is specially sung by S P Balasubramaniam. The lyrics for the album have been written by Amitabh Bhattacharya.

    “Chennai Express has been a reunion of sorts for me. My first film was with SRK as a co-star, Manish Malhotra did my costumes and Vishal-Shekhar composed the music. I love all the songs and the way Vishal-Shekhar have beautifully amalgamated the theme and the tracks. Titli is my favourite one,” said actress Deepika Padukone.

    Commenting on the music Shah Rukh Khan said, “Music breathes life into a film and Vishal-Shekhar have exactly done that with the songs of Chennai Express. I have always had a great working experience with them. There‘s a song for everyone in the album. My personal favourites are Tera Raasta Chodu Na and Titli. Hope you‘ve liked them too!”

    “Chennai Express‘ music is the film. Love, humour, action, comedy, it‘s all in the songs. Also it is a genuine homage to South Indian culture / music,” said music directors Vishal and Shekhar.

    “I am very excited about the music of our film because of Vishal and Shekhar. They have put together a brilliant album keeping the theme of the film in mind. Having worked with them for Golmaal 1, I am very glad that we have come together for Chennai Express too,” said director Rohit Shetty.

    “It is always a great pleasure to work with Shah Rukh Khan. T-Series has been associated with him right from his first home production Main Hoon Na. SRK has a great taste for music which is evident from Don 2, Ra.One, Om Shanti Om and now Chennai Express. Chennai Express is a great mixture of various flavours and melodies collated amazingly by Vishal-Shekhar,” said T-Series chairman and MD Bhushan Kumar.

    Chennai Express will hit theatres worldwide on Eid – 8 August 2013.

    NEW DELHI: Ritesh Batra‘s Lunchbox and Pete Travis‘ Dredd is being screened at the ongoing 48th Karlovy Vary International Film Festival in the Czech Republic.

    Apart from this screening in the Festival that commenced on 28 June and will conclude on 6 July, Lunchbox is slated to visit at least another twenty international film festivals during this year.

    Dabba (Lunchbox), an India-France-Germany co-production is to be screened in the “Horizons” section that presents recent productions from major festivals.

    The film earlier screened at Cannes film festival in the International Critics‘ Week sidebar.

    This romantic film set in contemporary Mumbai is a story of lost lunchboxes that engineer a love affair between attractive Ila and ageing Saajan.

    Dredd by Pete Travis will have a Midnight Screening at the festival. The film is an UK-USA-India-South Africa co-production. The film revolves around two judges: the incorruptible Dredd and the comely rookie Cassandra Anderson who find themselves battling the arch villain Ma-Ma in an unrelenting slaughter-fest. Dredd is a 3D action movie.

    Karlovy Vary International Film Festival 2013 opened with Michel Gondry‘s Mood Indigo starring Audrey Tatou and Romain Duris.

    MSM enters into association with KEPL to produce ‘Mango’

    NEW DELHI: Bajatey Raho, produced by Multi Screen Media in a co-production with Eros International, is the first of a slew of movies this year through the motion pictures division of MSM.

    The film is being released on 26 July which has been co-produced with Eros International. It is a revenge comedy starring Dolly Ahluwalia, Vinay Pathak, RanvirShorey, RaviKissen and Vishakha Singh.

    The next movie being produced in association with KEPL is titled Mango and has been directed by Abbas Tyrewala. It will star Rannvijay, Harman, Monali Thakur, Chandan Roy Sanyal and Swara Bhaskar.

    Mango also marks the return of KEPL with a romantic comedy after Saathiya. Set in the heart of Goa, Mango is all set to recreate the same magic that Abbas created in his directorial debut movie, Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na. The cast of the movie includes Rannvijay, the winner of Roadies and an accomplished host who has made his mark in the film industry with his Hindi and Punjabi films. It also stars the critically acclaimed Chandan Roy Sanyal, best remembered for his role in Vishal Bharadwaj‘s Kaminey.

    Based in the calm atmosphere of modern Goa in the monsoons, this frenzied film traces one night in the life of five manic individuals, whose stories intertwine in a completely unlikely manner. It is a story of love, life, friendship, relationships and betrayal. Primary, secondary and even incidental romances share the spotlight here with the main characters where while some chase love, the others chase money here.

Today I re-enter the same space with some of my best colleagues – Abbas, who wrote Maqbool, Aradhana, who designed Fire, Allan – action director for Bandit Queen and Mulchand who has lit every single work I have ever done. Together we are producing what we believe is a really funny and fast paced film, deliciously called Mango”.

    MUMBAI: Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan and Molecule Communications along with Pria Haider organised a panel discussion recently on Music Beyond Boundaries featuring composers Karsh Kale, Salim Merchant and DJ Rekha.

    Sharda, a singer in Bollywood movies of yesteryear graced the event that was emceed by Geetika Agarwal. Also present on this occasion were president of Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan Dr. Navin Mehta and director of Molecule Communications (New York) Ajay Shrivastav.

    The panellists described how Indian music has gone global and their contribution to the music world. Each speaker narrated how they were inspired by music and the richness and mosaic of Indian. The panellists also attempted to answer the question why Indian music is very much Bollywood-driven and is there music beyond cinema?

    Emmy Award-nominated Salim Merchant, one of Bollywood‘s renowned music composers, said, “One should not attempt to swim in the vast ocean of music but get drowned to feel the rhythm of it inside out. You can‘t play safe if you want to succeed or merely survive. There should be a fire of knowledge about music that should keep burning.” He also narrated how Indian music has been adapted in various countries and blend perfectly with global music in different forms.

    Karsh, described by Billboard Magazine as a visionary composer and producer, explained how to find a perfect match between Indian music and rest of the world. He said, “Truly music has no boundaries and musicians are the children of the world. One should follow the heart if he or she wants good music.”

    MUMBAI: The Emraan Hashmi and Vidya Balan starrer Ghanchakkar fails to please the audience, with a poor script and execution. The film opened to indifferent response on Friday, it could not cash in on Saturday and did only marginally better on Sunday to end its opening weekend with figures of Rs 19.35 crore.

    Raanjhanaa, which marked the debut of the south superstar Dhanush of Kolavari Di fame, has met with mixed response due to its second half. However, the first week collection figures are a respectable with Rs 32.2 crore; the film may benefit due to poor opposition in Ghanchakkar at places other than North where the Punjabi film, Jatt & Juliet 2, is creating a havoc.

    Shortcut Romeo the remake of Susi Ganeshan‘s own Tamil film Thiruttu Payale, starring Neil Nitin Mukesh, Ameesha Patel and Puja Gupta is doing poorly in its first week having collected just Rs 2.5 crore.

    Enemmy, Mithun Chakraborty‘s home production starring Mithun, Mahakshay, Suniel Shetty, Kay Kay Menon and Johnny Lever is doing poor business, barely collecting Rs 1.5 crore in its one week run.

    Fukrey, a north-centric youth comedy, has sustained reasonably well in its second week adding Rs 10.7 crore to take its tally to Rs 28.2 crore.

    Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani continues to move smoothly in its fourth straight week. The film has collected Rs 7.3 crore in its fourth week to take its four week tally to Rs 180.25 crore.

    NEW DELHI: Ajay Bahl‘s B.A. Pass, which won the best film award in the Indian Competition section of 12th Osian‘s Cinefan Film Festival here last year will release on 12 July.

    B.A. Pass also won the Audience Award at the South Asian Alternative Film Festival in Paris in January this year.

    The film features Shadab Kamal and Shilpa Shukla from Chak De! India fame in lead roles. It revolves around 19 year old Mukesh who after losing his parents in a car accident lands up in Delhi worrying how to support himself and his two younger sisters. He then stumbles in the world of gigolos.

    NEW DELHI: Producer-actor-director Kamal R Khan, who earlier invited controversies with his film ‘Desh Drohi‘ and his presence in Bigg Boss 3, is once again in trouble.

    An Uttar Pradesh cadre Indian Police Service officer Amitabh Thakur has filed a petition before Lucknow Chief Judician Magistrate Pramod Kumar for registration of a first information report against Khan for having made extremely objectionable criminal comments in a review of the film ‘Raanjhana‘.

    According to the complaint, Khan made the comments against two Schedule Castes in a video on YouTube,

    The matter, filed after the police refused to register an FIR, has been fixed for 12 July.

    In the 09.40 minute video review uploaded on YouTube on 20 June, Khan said: “Sir, I don‘t know whether you are from UP or not, but I am. In the whole of UP, you will find cobblers and sweepers who look like Dhanush but you will not find such single rotten Brahman as him in entire UP.” He also made some other extremely improper personal comments against the actor Dhanush.

    Thakur had previously given an FIR to Gomtinagar police station, Lucknow and SSP, Lucknow saying that Khan‘s comments are clearly casteist in nature and constitute an offence under section 3(1)(x) of the SC, ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act 1989.

    In his very first film ‘Desh Drohi‘, Khan indirectly referred to the Shiv Sena through his dialogue “Jitni nafrat humhare liye tumhare dil main hain , usse zyada pyar tumhare liye humare seene main hain. Kabhi UP Bihar aake dekhna, mehman ko bhagwan samajhte hain hum”.

    This resulted in the film being banned in Mumbai for two months.

    MUMBAI: Chandigarh‘s Flying Sikh, Milkha Singh feels honored with Rakesh Omprakash Mehra directing the biopic based on his life and struggle. The soon to-be release, Bhaag Milkha Bhaag which reveals the hardships and life story of the 82 year old featuring Farhan Akhtar as Milkha Singh is already creating a lot of buzz with its hit music and trailers.

    Opening up to the media, the legendary sportsman revealed, “I became very emotional after watching certain scenes as they reminded me of my days of struggle. The film brought alive memories of the partition when I did not have a job or enough food. I burst into tears to see my initial days unfold on the big screen.”

    Milkha who charged just Rs 1 to let Mehra make his biopic was very impressed with actor Farhan Akhtar after watching the special screening of the movie. He also commented that “Farhan looks like my duplicate in the film. He has done a great job. Rakeysh and also the dialogues and the lyrics by Prasoon Joshi have impressed me a lot,”

    Although his biopic is all geared to set ablaze the box office, Milkha Singh himself is not a movie buff. Acknowledging his poor knowledge about Bollywood, he revealed that the last Hindi movie he saw was over 50 years ago. However his golfer son Jeev Milkha Singh who decided on roping in Mehra to helm his dad‘s biopic is an absolute movie buff and is along with the entire Milkha family looking forward to the release of the movie and its success.

    Recalling his days as a sportsman, Milkha Singh still regrets missing the Rome Olympic medal and hopes to see someone else win the medal for India. His ardent wish is to inspire today‘s youth who promise to be a great hope for the country.

    Bhaag Milkha Bhaag also stars Sonam Kapoor and is slated to hit the screens on July 12.

    A R Murugadoss to direct Fox Star Studios next Hindi film

    MUMBAI: After storming the Tamil film industry in 2011, with their three film deal,celebrated film maker AR Murugadoss and production and distribution giant, Fox Star Studios are all set to take their partnership to the next level.

    A R Murugadoss has been signed by Fox Star Studios to direct a Hindi film in 2014. And this, even as the third film of their three film deal in Tamil, Atlee Kumar‘s Raja Rani is ready for a release in September 2013.

    The partnership between Fox Star Studios and A R Murugadoss kick started with breakaway hit,Engaeyum Eppothum in 2011 and was followed by power packed action entertainer Vathikuchi in March 2013.

    Talking about his association with the studio, A R Murugadoss says,‘‘ Working with a studio like Fox Star Studios, has been a good experience for me. We are moving our partnership to the next stage now. I am happy to confirm that l will be directing a Hindi film with Fox next year. Besides Tamil, we are also looking forward to moving our production partnership in Hindi market to give a chance to young directors with strong scripts.”
