IFFI to pay tribute to Pran

MUMBAI: The 44th International Film Festival of India (IFFI) to be held in Goa from 20-30 November will pay tribute to the veteran actor Pran. The legendary Bollywood villain passed away in July this year. The festival will witness the screening of three of his most popular films – Jis Desh Main Ganga Behti Hai, Madhumati and Zanjeer.

A true legend of Indian cinema, Pran defined the villain in Hindi cinema for over a decade and more in the 1960s and set the benchmark for the on-screen baddie, before carving out an equally glorious career as a character/supporting actor. As a film villain, such was the terror he infused in the hearts of film-goers that the apocryphal story goes that for over twenty years, when he ruled the world of cinema as a villain, no family in north India named a child ‘Pran’.

Pran’s son Sunil Sikand and daughter Pinky Bhalla will be present for the screening. The film will be screened on the third and fourth day of the festival. Pran’s wife Shukla Sikand is also slated to attend the screening.

IFFI director Shankar Mohan says, “As per the festival’s tradition, IFFI pays tribute to noted film personalities who passed away in the year preceding the festival. IFFI invites their family members, friends and well-wishers to attend the screenings of the artiste’s best works.”

Last year, a special homage was paid to Yash Chopra at the festival.

CBFC asks to cut short the kiss in ‘Ram Leela’

MUMBAI: Their sizzling chemistry on-screen has been making news since last many days. And actor Ranveer Singh has been quite kicked about the steamy kissing scene with co-actor Deepika Padukone in their upcoming Ram Leela that has been a talk of the town of late.

But it seems the scene hasn’t gone down well with the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). A recent newspaper report suggests that the Board has asked filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali to chop the scene by almost 50 per cent to get a U/A certificate.

It’s obvious that the filmmaker isn’t too happy with the CBFC directive but is not left with many option as he would like to get a U/A certificate for his film.

Krrish 3 continues its strong run at the BO

MUMBAI: Ram Gopal Varma’s attempt at cashing in on the title of his earlier film – Satya – with Satya 2, fails badly. The film is a nonstarter. A poor fare sans face value, the film has been generally ignored by the moviegoer. The film barely managed to cross the one crore mark for its opening weekend.

Krrish 3 makes the most of its one time watch appeal and solo festival week release despite reports not being in its favour. The film’s collections peaked to a high of Rs 31 crore on Monday once the dull period of pre-Diwali and Diwali were over. The film has gone on to collect Rs 120 crore. The open second week is expected to give the film a good follow up looking at the second weekend which has crossed the Rs 30 crore mark.

Micky Virus has added just Rs 50 lakh in its second week to take its two week total to Rs 7.9 crore.
Boss has collected Rs 40 lakh in its third week to take its three week tally to Rs 52.1 crore.

  • Shahid, Sonakshi entertain viewers at R Rajkumars music launch

Shahid, Sonakshi entertain viewers at R Rajkumars music launch

MUMBAI: The music launch of the movie R…Rajkumar in the city recently turned out to be a high energy affair. The director and actors broke in to a jig as soon as the music from the film started playing. So while it was Prabhu Deva, the director of the film and Shahid Kapoor, the lead actor, who started the high-octane performance, Sonakshi too joined in as soon as the chart-bursting Sari Ke Fall Se… started.

Sonkashi, who looked pretty in a black sari with fushia and florescent border, seemed to share a really comfortable bond with Shahid. The two actors not just shared few interesting anecdotes from the shoot but also enacted a few scenes.

At one point, Shahid jokingly even remarked that Sonakshi “ko thappad se toh darr lagta nahi..” referring to her now famous dialogue from Dabangg. However, he was talking about a new term “thappi” that they have coined in the film. “The word is a combination of thappad and pappi and has been used in the film,” he shared, as the two even gave the audience a live demo of a thappi.

While at the launch, the magic of the two lead actors worked really well, let’s see if the pairing even works on-screen!

  • Satya 2: An insult to the original

Satya 2: An insult to the original

MUMBAI: Since long people have been expecting anything worthy from a Ram Gopal Varma film; they come and go. How badly Varma has lagged behind in the art of filmmaking is finally proved by Varma himself with Satya 2. In that, the comparison with his original Satya from 1998 becomes inevitable and besides showing the degeneration of its maker, Satya 2 is also an insult to the earlier one. The cheap intent to use the title tells of a desire to lure the people despite this film having nothing to qualify as a sequel.

    Producer: M Sumanth Kumar Reddy.
    Director: Ram Gopal Varma.
Cast: Puneet Singh Ratn, Anaika Soti, Sharvanand, Mahesh Thakur, Mrunal Jain.

The story – for whatever it is – is a kind of sci-fi of the crime world. Puneet Singh, the hero of the film, walks into Mumbai with dreams of giving the city’s underworld a new identity. To turn it into an organisation with precision; this organisation is called Company! The qualifications of Puneet are in his get up. He dresses like a middle rung executive and sports specs to complete the effect. His speciality is that he takes the mistakes committed by his peers, the dons of yore, as his lessons to stay ahead of rivals as well as authorities.

Puneet decides to make his presence felt with three murders of city’s top names; an industrialist, a media tycoon and the police commissioner. The crimes take the cops by surprise but they have no clue who perpetuates them. They have no clue of the arrival of a new don.

Puneet may be a calculated don but he surely has a romantic side to him. He has a sweetheart in Anaika Soti and, like any young man who decides to settle down after launching his career; Puneet too decides to marry his girlfriend so that they could sing a song in Kashmir. Sadly, even that does not bring a relief from the tedium that has been set by the proceedings.

Ram Gopal Varma seems to be counting on luck factor now. Just make a film and hope it works! Sadly, with this kind of an all-round mediocrity in his film how can luck smile? He had better diversify from the underworld theme because it has been done to death and the underworld is presently dormant. And, what is not in news generates no interest. He tries props such as photography and background. However, his efforts to experiment with camera are disturbing to ones’ senses and the sudden bursts of background music are jarring. The performance of his actors is mediocre to bad. Puneet makes no impact. Anaika has little to do. The film lacks in interesting characters which could inspire an actor.

Satya 2 has nothing going for it.

    Banana takes John to school

MUMBAI: Critics may have panned him many times for his acting. But now that John Abraham has donned the producer’s hat, it seems he doesn’t want to give any chance to his critics to raise a finger at him. For his new production, Banana – a teenage film, he seems all involved and geared up.

Today morning, the actor turned producer posted a picture on Twitter from Jamshedpur where the film is being shot. “At Loyola high school, Jamshedpur. Our next production Banana,” he posted on the microblogging site.

The film revolves around a young boy who tries to deal with the experiences of life. The film is being directed by Sajid Ali, director Imtiaz Ali’s younger brother.

John believes that the film will appeal to all age groups. In an interview he had said, “Just like people did not expect anything from Vicky Donor, I guarantee people may not expect anything from Banana, but I am sure it will bring back a lot of memories when you watch it.”
