    Waheeda Rehman to be honoured with cinema Centenary Award at IFFI

    MUMBAI: Veteran actress Waheeda Rehman will be honoured with the first cinema Centenary Award at International Film Festival of India (IFFI) on 20 November, the opening day of the festival. The award has been introduced this year and the actress will be the first one to receive it.

     

    This news has been confirmed by Information and Broadcasting Minister Manish Tewari. He tweeted saying, “Congratulations to Waheeda Rehmanji for being conferred the inaugural Centenary Award for the Indian Film Personality of the year 2013.” Other than this, the actress has already bagged honours like the Padma Shri in 1972 and the Padma Bhushan in 2011.

     

    The 44th edition of IFFI would be held at Panjim Goa from 20 November, 2013 with Susan Sarandon as the chief guest.

    NFDC Film Bazaar 2013 to kick start on 20 November in Goa

    MUMBAI: Film Bazaar- South Asia’s global film market, National Film Development Corporation’s (NFDC) promotional arm, is set to kick start from 20 – 24 November and will be in its seventh edition this year. The film market, like every year, will be held at Marriott Resort, Goa, alongside International Film Festival of India (IFFI).

     

    The market this year will have an eclectic mix of influential people like Christian Jeune- Cannes Film Festival; Thierry Fremaux – Cannes Film Festival; Marco Mueller- Rome Film Festival; Derek Malcolm – British Film Critic and Historian; Chris Paton, Fortissimo; Jacobine Van Der Vloed- Cinemart (Rotterdam); Remi Burah- Arte France Cinema; Sergio Fant –Locarno International Film Festival; Charles Tesson – Semaine De La Critique; Frederic Boyer- Tribeca Film Festival; Anne Delseth- Director’s Fortnight Cannes Film Festival, to name a few.

     

    Film Bazaar this year will launch a new program ‘Producers’ Lab’, which aims at providing training and networking opportunities to upcoming producers from across the country and will also consist of workshop sessions, case studies and one-on-one meetings spread over three days. These sessions will be conducted by well known domestic and international film fraternity.

     

    The ‘Screenwriters’ Lab’, with its six independent screenwriters this year, conducted its first phase of mentored workshop at Toronto International Film Festival and will conclude with its second phase, like every year, at Film Bazaar. Co-production Market finalists comprises an interesting line-up from countries, namely Afghanistan, UK, Canada, Switzerland, Poland, Luthuania, and projects by Govind Nihalani’s A Holy Fire, Shyam Benegal’sRoads To Freedom, Umesh Kulkarni’s Highway, Anup Singh’sA Scorpion’s Song to name a few.

     

    The recently announced ‘Film Bazaar Recommends’ list of films includes Pakistan’s official submission for foreign language film at the 86th Academy Awards- Zinda Bhaag starring Naseeruddin Shah, Jai Ho– A docu-feature based on Indian music composer and singer A.R.Rahman and auteur filmmaker Kamal Swaroop’s Rangbhoomi, amongst other.

    Coffin Maker to compete at International Competition at IFFI GOA

    MUMBAI: Nasseruddin Shah’s Coffin Maker, produced by Bharat and Ambika Vijan, Shree Narayan Studios, has trumped all competition and is selected to compete in the main section in the International Competition at IIFI GOA.

     

    The film that was earlier selected for the Indian Panaroma section at IFFI will compete with global films in the International competition section like A Place in Heaven by Yassi Madmony (Israel), Beatriz’s War by Bety Reis, Luigi Acquisto (East Timor-Australia), Brothers. The Final Confession by Victoria Trofimenko (Ukraine), Hush…Girls Don’t Scream by Pouran Derakhshandeh (Iran, In Hiding by Jan Kidawa-Blonski (Poland), My Sweet Pepper Land by Hiner Saleem (France-Germany-Iraq) and Like Father, Like Son by Hirokazu Koreeda (Japan) among others.

     

    Coffin Maker is a life changing film that will resonate and connect globally with its theme. The film exemplifies the genius and the exceptional talent of Nasseruddin as Anton Gomes, yet again.

    MUMBAI: For Ram-Leela that changed overnight to Goliyon Ki Rasleela: Ram Leela, Sanjay Leela Bhansali takes his inspiration from Shakespeare’s Romeo And Juliet and sets it up in the background of Kutch region in Gujarat. This gives the director an opportunity to add all the colour he wishes to the film which has always been his desire.

     

    To depict the warring families, the film borrows from the story of the real life lady don of Saurashtra, Santokben Jadeja (whose life was portrayed on screen by Shabana Azmi in Vinay Shukla’s 1999 film Godmother), played here by Supriya Pathak Kapoor, which accounts for the head of one family don. On the other hand, we have Homi Wadia from stage leading his clan which basically consists of shepherds. While the Jadejas are Rajputs and are known to wield swords and carry guns, Rabaris don’t carry weapons except for the occasional sickle tied to a pole to cut tree leaves for the herd. The town folks, supposedly from historical town of Anjar, are shown to have only two options all day: shoot bullets or drink booze. In short, this is not how things happen in Gujarat (or even Bihar or UP for that matter) and is all just the filmmaker’s imagination.

    This town is occupied by two warring factions, Saneda (Jadeja) and Rajadi (Rabari), whose enmity goes back 500 years. The men as well as women on both sides carry arms and are always game for a shootout. Traditionally, both sides avoid stepping into the other’s area because when they do, there is always bloodshed. However, there is macho hero, Ranveer Singh, who seems to have been through all the girls on his side of town and decides to venture out into the enemy zone. It is Holi and easy to hide behind the colours. Once there, he and Deepika Padukone spot each other; it is not love at first sight but rather lust at first sight! Thereafter, both are inseparable, at least physically. They love to cling to each other and the name of their kind of love is called smooch and neck.

     

    The pair is very bold about their romance and it is not long before it becomes obvious to the girl’s brother and mother, Supriya. It is time to arrange a quick fix wedding for Deepika with an NRI of her own community. The plan is to keep him as ghar jamaai. After all, Supriya is a don and even NRIs have to be scared of her. It is these kinds of things that take the film out of the hands of its makers as they go on adding up as the film moves into its second half.

     

    Howsoever they may lust for each other, they won’t celebrate honeymoon till they tie the knot.  So they decide to elope to some temple town, get married and check into a lodge to consummate their marriage. So far so good but the fodder for the second half has to be created and thus Ranveer is betrayed by his own friends and Deepika’s people catch up with them.

     

    Post interval, the romance is over and so are the light moments. Instead there is some forced melodrama which is not interesting. The story is now about people betraying their own respective dons. Gulshan Devaiah wants to become the don instead of Supriya but when she is down with a bullet wound she appoints Deepika in her place. Why, in that case, did Devaiah bring Deepika back? By now the film is all about creating situations for crowd scenes to fill the small bylanes of the location and, hence, the screen. The ending is on expected lines but the approaches to that is rather long winding and tedious as there are only crowds on the screen with no one knowing who is on whose side!

     

    Bhansali has been able to make the film colourful, keep the first half light, full of songs, inspired choreography and comic moments with a generous dose of dialogue that is double meaning at times and just vulgar at others. Bhansali also takes the credit for the music score in the film. However, almost all songs are set to the tunes of Gujarati folk songs but with richer orchestration and have mainly sectional appeal. Songs are too loud to say much about the lyrics. Locations are interesting and the cinematography enhances their effect. The film loses pace in the second half, which needed to be trimmed heavily.

     

    Deepika is excellent in light as well as emotional scenes while Ranveer has been constant since his first film. The only change here is he has grown muscles instead of expressions. Supriya is at her natural best with Richa Chadda holding her own.

     

    Goliyon Ki Rasleela: Ram-Leela has healthy opening response with the best being in Western India and weak spots being single screens, especially in the Hindi belt. (The collections improved after Sachin Tendulkar, playing his 200th and last test in Mumbai, got out.) The film will have varied outcomes in different circuits yet generally satisfactory.

    MUMBAI: We have heard a very heartwarming story behind Bullett Raja’s latest track — Don’t Touch My Body that features Mahie Gill. Not many know that the tune of the song created by Sajid Wajid that is gradually becoming a rage was actually created almost seven years ago.

     

    It so happened that Tigmanshu roped in Sajid Wajid for a film in 2006 but due to some technical difficulties the film was never made and got shelved eventually. However, Sajid Wajid promised him that they will keep the music they composed for his film reserved for their collaboration in future.

     

    Tigmanshu again approached Sajid Wajid, this time for Bullett Raja. While Tigmanshu had forgotten about the incident, the duo shocked him by telling that they had kept the music with them. And that’s how Don’t Touch My Body happned.

     

    Sajid-Wajid have set one of the finest examples of exemplary friendship in the industry!

    MUMBAI: We know how actors these days do anything to promote their films. Recently, while promoting his upcoming film, Gori Tere Pyaar Mein in Delhi, actor Imran Khan, who looked dapper in a dark pink sweater clubbed with beige pants and blue shoes, surprised the Delhiites with a mismatched pair of socks.

     

    And the actor was flaunting it too. Imran played the same stint earlier this month on the celebrity chat show, The Front Row With Anupama Chopra. The two stints are enough to give audience an idea that the mismatched socks have something to do with the film’s story. We just hope that it has a substantial part in the film.

     

    However, Kareena Kapoor and director Punit Malhotra were also in tow with Imran. And Kareena, who has worked with Imran earlier in Ekk Main Hu Aur Ek Tu looked elegant in a black dress.

     

    The film, Gori Tere Pyaar Mein is a romantic comedy film written and directed by Punit Malhotra and is produced by Karan Johar under the banner of Dharma Productions. The film is releasing on 22 November.

    IFFI to highlight north-east cinema for the first time

    MUMBAI: The 44th International Film Festival of India (IFFI) to be held in Panaji, Goa will for the first time highlight cinema from the north eastern states of India. The opening ceremony for this section will include actors Seema Biswas and Adil Hussain.

     

    The festival has created a special north-east package named ‘Focus: North East’. The section will be inaugurated on 22 November and close on 27 November. A total of 23 films from the north east will be screened between these dates. This will include Ek Pal, as a special homage to its producer Hemendra Prasad Barooah.

     

    The opening movie of the section will be Khawnlung Run, the first-ever Mizo film to be screened in any international festival. Among the other films to be screened is Rupkonwar Jyotiprasad Aru Joymoti, which was directed by the late Bhupen Hazarika.
