Bombay HC asks board to reconsider certification of Bhansalis film

MUMBAI: The Bombay High Court on Wednesday directed the appellate tribunal of the Central Board for Film Certification (CBFC) to reconsider the U/A certification given to Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s recently released film, Goliyon Ki Rasleela – Ramleela.

An observation was made by the Division Bench of Justices V M Kanade and M S Sonak that the CBFC did not apply its mind while granting certification to the film. The court was acting on a petition filed by Sandeep Shukla, a member of the Congress and vice-president of Shree Maharashtra Ramleela Mandal. The mandal organises Ramleela every year during Navratri at Azad Maidan. Shukla claimed that the film’s title is misleading and the contents have hurt the religious sentiments of followers of Hindu deity Ram and Hanuman.

The court asked the CBFC to consider whether the guidelines of the Cinematograph Act were followed before granting certification to the movie. “Utmost care has to be taken by the board in such cases and ensure that the guidelines are followed and that there are no violations,” said the court.

Although the board tried to convey to the court that the guidelines were followed in their view, the judges were not satisfied and said that there has been non-application of mind. The judges said that the

board did not apply its mind while granting certification to Bhansali’s movie. They also noted that the CBFC has to be careful in the future while issuing certification to movies.

The petition was filed against director and producer of the movie Sanjay Leela Bhansali, the Production Company, Eros International Media Limited and the CBFC, which granted the film a U/A certificate on 1 November. The court also directed the CBFC to see if any content of the movie or its title has violated any fundamental rights of citizens as alleged by the petitioner and disposed of the petition.

According to the petition, the term ‘Ramleela’ has been historically associated with the plays depicting the life of Ram. Since the movie is based on a love story and not on the conventional meaning attributed to ‘Ramleela’, the petitioners claimed that the producers are “deliberately and intentionally” using the term for commercial success.
“The commercial exploitation of the word ‘Ramleela’ amounts to infringement. The defendants cannot be allowed to misuse the same for their commercial venture,” the petition stated.

  • The weeks releases fail to work at BO, pundits pin hope on Dhoom 3

The weeks releases fail to work at BO, pundits pin hope on Dhoom 3

MUMBAI: Jackpot, Sachin Joshi’s third attempt at seeking recognition as a film actor, has come to naught. Released at a fair number of screens, the film has remained poor in collections as it has only managed 2.8 crore for its opening weekend. It will be tough to feed the cinema halls Monday onwards.

What The Fish makes its debut with cancelled shows due to no show by audience; an exercise in total loss of money and efforts.

R…. Rajkumar has a face saving first week thanks to its collections from single screens away from metros. The film has collected 41.3 crore in its first week with second week expected to gain some due to poor oppositions.

    Club 60 has gone unnoticed.

Bullet Raja continued its poor run in its second week with figures of 2.55 crore taking its two week total to 32.3 crore.

Goliyon Ki Rasleela: Ram-Leela has added 2.85 crore in its fourth week taking its four week total to 103.15 crore.

Singh Saab The Great comes to the end of its run with a three week tally of 273 crore.

Krrish 3 has collected 55 lakh in its sixth week to take its six week total to 175.95 crore.

The exhibition trade pins its hopes on Dhoom 3 to end the year 2013 on a positive note as most films they had hopes from have failed to live up the trade’s expectations. Even the movie lovers are looking forward to this Aamir Khan-YRF offering.

  • Hrithik-Suzanne call it quits

    Hrithik-Suzanne call it quits

MUMBAI: It was in 2010 during the shooting of Kites when the rumours of everything not being hunky-dory between Hrithik Roshan and his wife Sussanne started rolling. The actor was rumoured to be dating the film’s lead actress Barbara Mori. However, he rubbished all the rumours and said all was well.

But as unfortunate as it may sound, now an official announcement has come from Roshan that reveals that the couple are ending their 17-year long relationship. They got married on 20 December 2000. It’s an irony that the announcement has come just few days before their 13th marriage anniversary.

It reads: “Sussanne has decided to separate from me and end our 17-year relationship. This is a very trying time for the entire family and I request the media and the people to grant us our privacy at this time. I do not wish this news to disempower my fans and the people about the institution of marriage in any way. I am a firm believer in this institution and respect and honour it at the highest level…. And once again I thank my fans for all the concern and prayers for my health, my treatment is going well and I should be able to resume my life in every way very soon. Thank you.”

It was few months back during the Ganesh Visarjan puja that the tensed situation between the couple came to the fore as Sussanne wasn’t spotted at the Roshan home.

It mounted up when a few weeks later, she came to attend Roshan senior’s birthday bash from her parents home with their two sons – Hrehaan, 7 and Hridhaan, 5 and made an early exit. Apparently, by then she had already moved to her parents – Sanjay and Zarine Khan’s Juhu home. The final blow came when unlike earlier, Suzanne wasn’t seen in public with Roshan at any of the promotional events of the third installment of Krissh.

  • Evelyn Sharma to match dance steps with Arshad Warsi

Evelyn Sharma to match dance steps with Arshad Warsi

MUMBAI: Evelyn Sharma seems to have all the luck by her side. From starting out as a fashionista and graduating to Bollywood success with super hits like Nautanki Saala! and then Ranbir Kapoor-starrer Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani (YJHD), she’s now turning a new leaf in her career.

Evelyn has been signed by director Neeraj Pathak for Bhaiyyaji Superhit starring Sunny Deol, Preity Zinta and Arshad Warsi.

Pitted as the leading lady opposite Arshad, she plays a cute, sexy but traditional Indian girl. But what the actress is most excited about is matching dance steps with him. Apart from being a powerhouse performer, Arshad is well-known for being a great dancer. And Evelyn feels this gives her a chance to hone her dancing skills too. Nowadays, the girl is often spotted at a dance rehearsal hall in Andheri, Mumbai. We wonder if that has something to do with the challenge of dancing with Arshad.

Meanwhile, having bagged a role with various shades, comedy, songs, dance and all, Evelyn is glad to work with director Neeraj Pathak. “He spotted me in YJHD and invited me to his office for a meeting. He compliments me for my talent and thinks I am a quick learner. I feel honoured with the praise,” said the actress.
