    ‘Khoobsurat’….. Not really!

    MUMBAI: Khoobsurat borrows its basic plot from the 1980 Hrishikesh Mukherjee film of the same name. Hrishikesh Mukherjee films were known for their simplicity and yet they appealed to all classes. His film was about a middleclass joint family where the matriarch of the house, Dina Pathak, runs her household with an iron fist and total domination. In the latest Khubsoorat, writer-director Shashanka Ghosh decides to give the simple Mukherjee film a ‘royal touch’ and massacres it royally.

     

    Sonam Kapoor is a physiotherapist working with the Indian Premiere League helping the likes of Dhoni and Shehwag and some alien entity called Kapoor who is so much in pain, he refuses to go out to bat until this physiotherapist gives his leg an almost fatal jerk! Something that could have handicapped someone else has cured Mr Kapoor! He is fit enough to go out and hit the last winning six. One thought, each IPL team had its own physio, here, the ‘poor’ IPL has only one for all the teams.

     

    Her credentials having been established and her reputation having travelled far and wide, she is invited to be an in-house physio to some ex-royal in Rajasthan. This ex-royal, Aamir Raza Hussain, has been wheelchair-bound since his accident ten years ago. He has so far dismissed about 40 physios trying to cure him. The fact is he doesn’t want to be cured. He holds himself responsible for the death of his 20-year-old-son, who died in a sports car crash that he had gifted him.

     

    Sonam enters the house and falls in love with the palace, its opulence and the luxury of the room assigned to her. This is just the beginning as more falling in love is yet to happen; which is, falling in love with the prince, Fawad Afzal Khan. Towards this end, her mother, Kirron Kher, encourages her every day on their regular Skype chats; this film may have turned Mukherjee’s idea of Khoobsurat from middle-class to royal while, at the same time, trying to make it contemporary.

     

    Sonam’s idea of physiotherapy for the reluctant royal is to take him around his gardens in a whirlwind wheelchair ride. The queen, Ratna Pathak, disapproves of her from day one and keeps making faces day after day. The prince Fawad keeps hovering around her despite being a very busy businessman. Earlier, it is established that he is engaged to be married to another royal, Aditi Rao Hydari.

     

    While Aamir Raza is getting cured merely by wheeling at jet speed around his palace and Pathak keeps making same faces of disapproval for Sonam, Fawad, and Sonam keep getting attracted to each other until they graduate to their first kiss.

     

    Comparing this film in any way to Mukherjee’s Khoobsurat is a sacrilege. The film and its makers have no sense of script, little sense of direction, and none for music. To sum it up, they have scant sense of filmmaking. The dialogue is pedestrian. Being a love story, the musical score needed to be strong but turns out to be poor and just one song, Naina…, is hummable. Editing is poor.

     

    Sonam plays the lead in this, her home production. She is a let-down acting-wise, looks-wise and dressing-wise. The makeup makes her look much older. Her clumsy, loud character seems to have been built around My Fair Lady; she is uncouth, which she blames on being half Punjabi from her mother’s side! Fawad, otherwise, known to be a very natural and endearing actor from what one sees of him on TV, is wasted; he is made to carry just one-and-a-half expressions throughout the film. Fawad’s greatest asset, his smile, is at a premium here. Ratna’s casting, in a role her mother played in the 1980 original, is supposed to be the casting coup, but backfires with poor etching of her character. Aamir Raza is turned into caricatures.

    ‘Daawat-e-Ishq’: No thanks…

     

    Yash Raj Films have been trying new subjects for some time now. With Daawat-e-Ishq, they try to bring back a Muslim background love story. But, this is a love story with an angle of dowry and getting back at dowry seekers. It also tries to juxtapose two prominent Muslim cultures, those of Hyderabad and Lucknow.

     

    Parineeti Chopra is a shoe shop sales girl in Hyderabad even as she continues to study for she is a topper who wants to specialise in shoe designing. Her father, Anupam Kher, is a clerk in the high court two years short of retirement. He is honest and hence, of limited means.

     

    It is time to look for a suitor for Parineeti. The problem for Anupam and Parineeti is that, her qualification does not count for anything to the boys’ families. The amount of dowry is what matters to them. This leads to a chain of rejections for her. Kher has a limit of 15 lakh but the gap is too much between what he can manage and what the boys’ parents demand. Since dowry is a bad word, one boy’s parents ask Kher to ‘help’ their son go to the US for further studies; all he needs is 80 lakh for that purpose.

     

    Parineeti is an aggressive girl and keeps throwing out such parents. She decides that marriage is not for her and, instead, embarks on a mission to trap such families who demand dowries and have them sent to jail. Kher takes some convincing but finally agrees to the plan. Doing this in their native Hyderabad would be too risky so their choice falls on Lucknow.

     

    The father daughter duo go for a total makeover, pose as millionaires from Dubai and check in at a five star Lucknow hotel. Next, they shortlist grooms from a marriage website and invite them for a meeting. A camera has been placed to record the proceedings of all such interviews. One of them happens to be Aditya Roy Kapur. He runs the city’s famous restaurant known for its kebabs, biryani etc with century old recipes inherited from his forefathers.

     

    Kapur is a simple hearted only son of his parents, popular with his customers as well as all around the city. For wedding, his parents’ wish list would cost Kher a cool 40 lakh. Parineeti agrees to the proposal and decides the nikaah would take place in two days’ time. However, Kapur wants three days to meet and know Parineeti better. After all her idea is to marry and then file a complaint with the police and demand a huge sum to settle the matter.

     

    The plan works, Kher and Parineetti walk off with a huge loot for Parineeti to pursue her dream of studying designing in the US. But, what she did not on count has happened. She has fallen in love with Kapur in those three days.

     

    The problem with this film is that it takes over half an hour to come to the real story before it sets up the background for Parineeti’s plan of taking on a dowry seeker. And when it happens, there are no twists and turns and lacks in drama of any sort. The approach to direction and storytelling is lacklustre. There are no highlights. The film has a catchy musical score with a blend of old world charm. Dialogue is routine. There is little about performances that stays with a viewer. Parineeti is her usual self. Kapur is over the top, loud being his idea of projecting simplicity. Kher is okay.

     

    Daawat-e-Ishq is a routine fare below expectations.

    Karan Johar dons designer’s hat for a women’s collection

    MUMBAI: After designing for his friends, Karan Johar is now taking his love for fashion a step further. The filmmaker is all set to make a grand debut as women’s wear designer with fashion brand Vero Moda.

     

    The brand synonymous with contemporary international fashion for women in India is collaborating with the film maker to create the Vero Moda Marquee collection, which will be unveiled by him at Mehboob Studio on 19 September.

     

    “Through the years, I have used my films as an outlet to showcase my own sense of fashion, which is luxurious and grand, yet functional at the same time. This is my first attempt to recreate my own distinct style by putting together a collection for a women’s fashion brand. The fact that I get to do it for a brand like this one makes it very exciting for me,” the film maker said in a statement.

     

    Back in 2010, Johar launched his eponymous menswear label in collaboration with designer Varun Bahl which received very good response.

    On the Bollywood front, Johar is currently focusing on Brothers starring Akshay Kumar, Sidharth Malhotra; which is a remake of the Hollywood film Warriors. He will also be remaking the cult film Ram Lakhan which will be directed by Rohit Shetty. Also, Salman Khan starrer Shuddhi is in the pipeline for Dharma Productions.

    NFDC Film Bazaar 2014 back with second edition of Producer’s Lab

    MUMBAI: Coming back with the second edition of Producer’s Lab, NFDC Film Bazaar 2014 is calling for entries for the same. The deadline for submission of application is 30 September 2014.

     

    Producer’s Lab was introduced in the Film Bazaar in 2013 and was a huge success. It will provide training and networking opportunities to upcoming independent producers from across the world.

     

    The Lab will also host Workshop Sessions, Case Studies and Master Classes spread over the five days of the Bazaar. Participants shortlisted for the lab will also be required to pay a non-refundable fee of Rs 50,000.

     

    Also, applicants should have worked in the capacity of a producer or line/supervising/executive producer on either one of the following and completed the same.

     

    The mentors for the NFDC Film Bazaar, Producer’s Lab 2013 included Cedomir Kolar (producer – No Man’s Land; co-producer – The Lunchbox), Clare Stewart (director – London Film Festival), Charles Tesson (delegue general- Semaine De La Critique / Critics’ Week at Cannes Film Festival) amongst others.

     

    This year, the NFDC Film Bazaar will be held from 20-24 November in Goa alongside the International Film Festival of India 2014.

    MUMBAI: Kolkata’s homegrown production house Adarsh Telemedia with Dione Entertainment has teamed up with Bollywood director Kunal Kohli to produce their maiden Bollywood venture, Vartak Nagar- The Story Of Four Crows.

     

    Directed by debutant Atul Taishete, Vartak Nagar stars Jimmy Sheirgill as a powerful underworld don and the MTV Roadies famed Raghu Ram as a mill union leader in the central roles.

     

    Talking about the movie, producer Amit Agarwal said, “The film is a gritty hard hitting film and for Kunal too this has been a step away from the romantic films that he is usually associated with. We were hunting for a film that mixed content with entertainment and as a story had a unique universal appeal.”

     

    “We are currently locking down on more Bollywood films as well and what we can promise is that each one of our future projects will be as content driven, as exciting and will be as universally appealing as Vartak Nagar,” he added.

     

    Set against the Great Bombay Mill Strike and the gangster era of the 1980’s, the film deals with the lives of four lower middle class school going friends and their lives as impacted by the strike, their loss of innocence and their journey which takes them through the highs of friendship, the lows of betrayal and eventually redemption.

    MUMBAI:  After launching the first teaser of the film on WhatsApp, the king of Bollywood Shah Rukh Khan known for his innovative marketing techniques, launched the music album of his latest movie Happy New Year online in order to benefit millions of his fans all over the globe.

     

    The worldwide music launch event was streamed live on YouTube and on the official website of Happy New Year. The movie which has already released two of its songs, ‘Manwa Lage’ and ‘Indiawaale’ amassed huge appreciation.

     

    Along with the entire cast of the movie, the director, Farah Khan, music directors Vishal-Shekhar and singers including Neeti Mohan, Sukhwinder Singh, Kanika Kapoor were also present for the event.

     

    Hosted by Rithwik Dhanjani and Kunwar Amarjeet , the Bollywood extravaganza showcased a number of mind blowing performances by the singers and cast of the movie. It began with singer Neeti Mohan’s performance on the already super hit song from the film ‘Manwa Laage’. The ‘Chhaiya Chhaiya’ fame singer Sukhwinder Singh also performed on the song ‘Satakli’ from the movie.

     

    After Sukhwinder, rapper Dr. Zeus and ‘Baby Doll’ singer Kanika Kapoor gave a sneak peek into the song ‘Lovely’ picturised on Deepika Padukone in the film followed by the biggest and the most awaited performance of the evening where the whole cast shook their leg on ‘Indiawaale’.  

     

    With the entire star cast, the director and the team behind the music present on stage, the album was officially launched by chanting the magical words- ‘Abraa ka Daabra.’

     

    Touted as one of the biggest hits of 2014, Happy New Year is all set to hit the silver screens this Diwali.

    Director Mangesh Hadawale turns creative producer for ‘Tapaal’

    MUMBAI: National Award winning director and script writer Mangesh Hadawale, known for films like Tingya and Dekh Indian Circus adds another feather to his hat. He is now turning into a creative producer for the Marathi movie Tapaal.

     

    To be directed by cinematographer turned director Laxman Utekar, Tapaal stars Nandu Madhav, Veena Jamkar, Milind Gunaji, Urmila Kanetkar and Rohit Utekar.

     

    Talking about his association with Hadawale, Utekar said, “I thought about making a Marathi film long back. When I was shooting as a cinematographer for Dekh Indian Circus, I discussed about it with Mangesh and asked him to write a nice story for me. He wrote a beautiful story and that is how Tapaal started.”

     

    Talking about what instigated him to turn to a creative producer, Hadawale reveals, “When the film was still at the scripting stage, I made Maitreya Mass Media hear the script which they loved and decided that it would be great if Laxman directs it, keeping his cinematography background in mind. They needed a reliable person to know the process of production and that is why I came in as a creative producer. But in true sense, it was Anant Bhuwad, the executive producer of the film, who has contributed. I have just taken care of location, shoot, permissions etc. But the execution in real sense was done smoothly by Anant Bhuwad.”

     
    The newly turned creative producer not only helped in creative aspect for the movie but also guided him in roping a stellar cast for his debut film.

    “Mangesh knew many actors from the Marathi industry. We had various aspects in mind while we were characterizing and he showed me various options for different characters. When I saw Nandu Madhav’s photograph, I could picturise him as the postman. Similarly, for Veena’s character, we had to look for an actress who could look motherly and would have been able to emote nicely. Keeping that in mind we casted her,” added Utekar.

    ‘Finding Fanny’ wins at the BO

    MUMBAI: Creature 3-D has not been appreciated. At 135 minutes, the film is found to be rather too long and taxing for a horror film with repetitive sequences. The makers have got carried away with their newfound creature.

     

    The film opened to poor response and failed to improve on Saturday and Sunday. While its main face, Bipasha Basu, is out of favour with the audience, the Pakistani actor, Imran Abbas Naqvi, failed to make an impression. Also, 3-D is no more a novelty. It ended its opening weekend with Rs 10.7 crore. Not very encouraging.

     

    Finding Fanny (English with dubbed Hindi version) did well at select multiplexes at major metros. In fact, it has done better than the other releases of the week, Creature 3-D. Deepika Padukone has proved to be the main attraction as well as the sustaining star in this film. The film has collected Rs 16.8 crore for its first weekend.

     

    Mary Kom has remained below par despite much hype and gone the way most sports biopics do: mostly ignored. The film managed to collect Rs 42.2 crore in its first week, the drop having started after the opening weekend.

     

    Raja Natwarlal proves to be a nonperformer at the box office with the audience rejecting the routine, run of the mill Emraan Hashmi fare dished out on regular basis. The film, which opened to poor response continued to be so through first week and, then, adding a mere Rs 2.75 crore in its second week to take its two week total to Rs 23.75 crore.

    MUMBAI: After the success of Farhan Akhtar’s Bhaag Milkha Bhaag and Priyanka Chopra’s Mary Kom, and Irrfan Khan’s Paan Singh Tomar, Sonam Kapoor seems to be the next in line.

     

    As biopics seem to be trending in bollywood, buzz is that the fiery actress is going to play the legendry Indian painter Amrita Sher-Gil on big screen. The film would revolve around Amrita’s life, love, friends and mentors.

     

    Born in 1913 to a Punjabi-Sikh father and a Hungarian-Jewish mother, Amrita Sher-Gil was a pre-independence painter and one of the most prolific female painters of the pre-Independence era. Referred to as the ‘Frida Kahlo of India’, the legendary painter lived in France and India and died in 1941. The actress is in talk with the painter’s family for the same.

     

    Sonam Kapoor is currently busy promoting her latest project Khoobsurat with co-star Fawad Khan. The movie also stars veteran actresses Ratna Pathak Shah and Kirron Kher in lead.

     

    Set in Rajasthan, Khoobsurat is the story of Dr. Mili Chakravarty (Sonam Kapoor)- a middle class physiotherapist from Delhi. Mili is sent to Rajasthan to treat the paraplegic Shekhar Rathore, Raja of Sambalgarh. Over the course of her stay in the mahal, Mili charms the Rathore family, especially young Vikram Singh Rathore- with her free spirit and funny antics.

     

    The film, which is a remake of Hrishikesh Mukerjee’s 1980 hit film of similar name starring Rekha is directed by Shashanka Ghosh and is slated to hit the silver screens on 19 September.

    ‘Finding Fanny’…Some fun some yawn

    MUMBAI: Once in a while we get these zany films with no head or tail. It is usually a local story. Also, in most cases, it is related to characters of a minority community which are easy to caricature with no protest expected. This is a road movie taking you on a sightseeing tour of the countryside of Goa.

    Finding Fanny is Parsi director Homi Adajania’s take on small Goan village Catholic families. This is a small community where their preferences, hates, love and likes are limited to each other. So are their petty politics vis-a-vis families.

    Deepika Padukone who lives in the village is an orphan loved by two men, Arjun Kapoor and Ranveer Singh who are also close friends. While Arjun plays shy, Ranveer steals a march by asking Deepika to marry him. She does but at his wedding he is so excited, he grabs a big helping of the wedding cake and gulps it down not realizing that he is also gulping down the usual decorated plastic bride and groom dolls placed on the cake. He dies of choking within 15 minutes of his wedding vows. Deepika, an instant widow, spends her life with Ranveer’s mother, Dimple Kapadia.

    This is a village where there is a post office but no mail is ever sent or received. The post master, Naseeruddin Shah, is always in lost memories of his childhood love, Fanny, to whom he could never propose face-to-face. The letter he once wrote to her returns undelivered after 46 years! Best he can do is sob aloud whenever he thinks of her.

    The village scene has two new entrants, Pankaj Kapur, an internationally renowned artist, and Arjun Kapoor, a guy who was said to have made it big in Mumbai after Deepika decided to marry Ranveer instead of him.

    They all decide to go find Fanny for Shah in Kapur’s old car which Arjun fixes up. It is Deepika’s idea because she is fond of Shah. Arjun agrees because he still fancies Deepika. Kapur agrees because he has a glad eye for Dimple. The gang of five sets out to find Fanny. The rest of the film is about trying to create funny situations or dialogue which does not happen as often as one hopes. However, the film makes up with fun quotient in the last 20 minutes or so.

    There is no solid plot as the story is one line: finding fanny. The director’s enthusiasm with the theme comes alive only later in the film. The end is on expected lines but fun. The film has veterans like Shah and Kapur who along with Arjun and Dimple do well but the film’s mainstay is Deepika. And Goa locales are always a pleasure to watch.

    Finding Fanny will find its appreciation in select cities at elite location multiplexes.

     

    ‘Creature 3-D’…never-ending!

     

    We have been watching run of the mill horror films since the days of Ramsay Brothers era. Many others have followed suit. But now international films get regular exposure in India and one is not competing with the local makers; it is time to match the international horror genre.

    Hollywood films have various justification for an invasion by an extra-terrestrial being; it could be from an outer planet or a scientific experiment gone wrong or just a creation of a revenge-seeking man. Here, in Creature 3D, the makers justify the creature by creating a new myth about it.

    Bipasha Basu has lost her mother early but has a gem of a father and both dote on each other. Her father has a lucrative job due to which he keeps maintaining a bungalow he has inherited in South Mumbai. No, they are not in Mumbai but somewhere in North. Soon, there is a powerful builder after him who wants to buy out his South Mumbai bungalow and use the plot to build a mall. The father’s continued resistance leads to him losing his job. The frustration and feeling that follows and he commits suicide.

    Sad though she may be, Bipasha does exactly what her father sacrificed his life resisting. She sells the bungalow in question to the same villains who were the cause of her father’s death and, with the monies so realised, buys a boutique forest lodge somewhere in Himachal. Her dad keeps coming in her imagination but never asks her why she gave up what he lost his life saving.

    The forest lodge is inaugurated on a Christmas Eve and nothing seems to work out as her supplies don’t reach her in time, the oven in her hotel is useless and her Christmas night band is late. However, the hero, Imran Abbas Naqvi, as heroes do in all films, comes to her rescue. She mistakes him for singer first and later for another guest booked at her lodge who does not show up. He has come on a mission at this lodge which remains unexplained until the end but, instead, falls in love with Bipasha at first glance!

    The Indian audience, probably, does not buy the idea of invaders from outer space. So here we have a local mumbo jumbo for the presence of this creature. This creature is a soul cursed by God Brahma and hence called Brahma-Rakshasa because he did evil deeds while being in an honourable position of a priest or some such thing! He is the second of his kind, the earlier one having been killed by 23 bullets from a single load ancient gun purified by some holy water.

    The more recent Brahma-Rakshasa was content living on a peepal tree secured by red threads. The creature was let loose when, one fine day, a labourer decided to cut that peepal tree. Now the creature is angry and starts attacking people. It eats them up almost in entirety, maybe leaving a small part or a limb behind for curious investigators, the head of which is not interested in such cases beyond closing files soon as they are opened.

    There is a village head around and hence there are also villagers. However, the creature would seem to have some grouse against Bipasha for it attacks only her guests, nobody else!

    The problem is, the film takes ages bringing the creature on the screen in its full form and goes on to take eons destroying it. Where this needed to be a 90 to 100 minute film, it stretches to 135 minutes. The creature attacks get monotonous without any twists. There is no surprise element.

    The computer generated creature is a triumph of Indian techies; this coupled with special effects are excellent to say the least. However this is a script of convenience with no concern to make it tight and plausible. The director being the story writer, he has no alternative but to follow his own convictions. His plus is the 3-D format which, thankfully, is not overused in this film and is usually effective. This being a T Series film, one expected the songs to be better but only one song, ‘Mehboob ki..’, has appeal because of its old world charm. The photography is very good. Performance wise, there is little that merits a mention. Bipasha is her usual self now lacking appeal for the audience. Imran fails to make his presence felt and lacks in expressions.

    Creature 3-D loses its appeal as it carries on for too long. The film has limited prospects at the box office.

    Zoya Akhtar to get Hrithik Roshan and Katrina Kaif together again

    MUMBAI: After creating wonders in Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara (ZNMD), one of the most popular on-screen jodis – Hrithik Roshan and Katrina Kaif is all set to be seen together again after Bang Bang.

     

    According to media reports, the duo will be seen in Zoya Akhtar’s next- Road.

     

    The movie is also said to reprise the hit ZNMD troika of Hrithik Roshan, Farhan Akhtar and Abhay Deol. Speculations are that Abhay and Farhan would not have a romantic backup in the film, hence it will only have one heroine.

     

    Even though there is no official confirmation yet, reports add that Hrithik Roshan is already on board and Katrina Kaif is in the running to play the lead.

     

    While Zoya Akhtar is currently directing Dil Dhadakne Do; Hrithik Roshan and Katrina Kaif are presently busy with their upcoming film Bang Bang. The two actors will soon start the promotion of the film which is all set to release on 2 October.

     

    Already, Bang Bang has created a record with its trailer by becoming the fastest promo to cross one million mark in 13 hours and 2 million in 18 hours of its release. And now the two songs ‘Tu Meri’ and ‘Meherbaan’ have also gone viral online.

     

    The high-on-action flick, which is a remake of the Hollywood movie Knight and Day, also features Danny Denzongpa and Jaaved Jaffrey in key roles.

     

    Dil Dhadakne Do is a story about a dysfunctional family starring Anil Kapoor, Priyanka Chopra, Farhan Akhtar, Ranveer Singh and Anushka Sharma.
