‘Piku’ peaks at box office; earns Rs 25.22 crore

MUMBAI: The Amitabh Bachchan, Deepika Padukone and Irrfan Khan starrer Piku might have started slow at the box office on Friday but interest was piqued amongst movie goers as it earned positive word of mouth. Piku managed to gain patrons during later shows on Friday. The movie’s wheels picked up additional “motion” on Saturday and Sunday.

The film improved by leaps and bounds with Rs 5.32 crore collections on Friday, Rs 8.7 crore on Saturday and Rs 11.2 crore on Sunday to take its opening weekend figure to Rs 25.22 crore.

Kuch Kuch Locha Hai proves a dud with no takers. Expecting Ram Kapoor and Sunny Leone to sell high priced tickets came as a cropper. The audience can’t be taken for granted with half-baked ideas. The film managed to collect just about Rs 2.4 crore in its first weekend.

Sabki Bajegi Band manages a meager Rs 20 lakh in its first week. Proves a disaster.

Gabbar Is Back backfires. The film is the worst among recent Akshay Kumar releases and the idea to cash in on famous Gabbar character from Sholay and its brand equity fails. The film stays afloat thanks to a four day weekend due to holidays collecting Rs 36.6 crore in its first four days but drops thereafter ending its first week with a total of Rs 56.4 crore.

Margarita With A Straw collects Rs 55 lakh in its third week to take its two week tally to Rs 5.8 crore.

Shashi Kapoor receives DadaSaheb Phalke Award at Prithvi Theatre

NEW DELHI: A large number of personalities from Bollywood including many of the heroines who shared screen space stood in loud ovation as veteran actor-filmmaker Shashi Kapoor received the Dadasaheb Phalke Award for 2014 for contribution to development of cinema in his home town, Mumbai.

As Kapoor was not well enough to travel to Delhi when the National Film awards were presented by Pranab Mukherjee on 3 May, the actor received the highest national award for contribution to cinema at the Prithvi Theatre from Information and Broadcasting Minister Arun Jaitley.

The award consisting of a Swarn Kamal (Golden Lotus), a cash prize of Rs 10 lakhs, a citation and a shawl was given to the actor who came in on a wheel chair.

Describing him as the most versatile personality Indian cinema has produced, who worked in commercial and alternate cinema, Jaitley in his brief speech said he was an actor par excellence who competed with the very best during his times.

The Minister also credited him with bringing the Hindi cinema and Hollywood together.

He is the third personality from the Kapoor family to get the Phalke award after veteran director Prithviraj Kapoor and Raj Kapoor. He is the 46th Dada Saheb Phalke Award winner.

The star studded event was attended by his long-time co-star Amitabh Bachchan, directors Shyam Benegal and Govind Nihalani, Asha Parekh, actress & MP Hema Malini, Rekha, veteran singer Asha Bhosale, lyricist Javed Akhtar who along with Salim had penned the dialogues of many of the films Kapoor acted in, Shabana Azmi, and Zeenat Aman.

Ranbir started the show with a poem and Rishi compered the programme.

A poignant audio visual on Shashi Kapoor’s films and his work along with interviews of important film personalities was played at the occasion to a rousing applause from the elite film audience.

In a vote of thanks, Bachchan said that Shashi has been a caring and generous human being and it is very fitting that the function was held at Prithvi Theatre, which Shashi Kapoor himself had established.

Kapoor made his debut as a leading man in the 1961 film Dharamputra and in 1965 starred in a commercial hit Jab Jab Phul Khilen. He went on to appear in more than 150 Hindi films. He was a very popular actor in Bollywood during the 60s, 70s and until the mid-80s.

He also starred in other British and American films such as Siddhartha (1972) and Muhafiz (1994).

  • ‘Piku’: Joyride

    ‘Piku’: Joyride

MUMBAI: Juhi Chatruvedi came up with the idea of a sperm donor in Vicky Donor in 2012. One of the things never discussed on an open forum. The film hit the bull’s eye. This time again in Piku, she has come up with a theme, which deals with a problem millions of people suffer from but never discuss in the open: constipation.

To Juhi’s credit, like she did in Vicky Donor, here too she makes the story an all-encompassing one. The kind of films, say, Hrishikesh Mukherjee would make. Weaving around the story of a hypochondriac, it adds the aspects of romance, family ties et al in a subtle manner while not making the film a one track toilet humour; she soon converts it into a road movie that leads to a traditional family and roots ending.

Amitabh Bachchan, the 70 year old homebound widower, suffers from chronic constipation but, being a hypochondriac, he imagines all other illnesses possible. Albeit, his illnesses are all psychosomatic, like if his temperature moves from 98.4 to 98.8, he feigns illness.

Bachchan is the kind who is disappointed if his blood tests reports or BP are normal. Deepika is his only daughter too much in love with her father and tolerates all his idiocies. She complies with all his whims of being a hypochondriac though she knows there is nothing wrong with him. Taking his temperature, taking his blood pressure and preparing his medical doses from hundreds of pills he has gathered.

Deepika hates Bachchan’s ways but also complies with them. Bachchan’s constipation updates are bizarre, and he even sends her updates about it through her office receptionist, which is read out in an important client meeting.

Just when you think you have had enough of the toilet humour, thankfully, the film changes track and becomes a road movie.

Irrfan, a qualified engineer, runs his dead father’s private cab service since he was sacked from his job in the Middle East. His company regularly caters to Deepika, dropping her to office every morning and getting her home again. She is as finicky as her father, Bachchan, and no driver from Irrfan’s company wants to ferry her. They do it reluctantly, though.

Bachchan has this lucrative offer to sell his huge house in Kolkata, which he is reluctant to sell while Deepika thinks it is time they got rid of it. Bachchan decides to travel to Kolkata to take a final call on the matter. The palatial villa is occupied by Bachchan’s brother and sister in law, who are insecure fearing the villa will be sold. Bachchan has his own peculiar reasons for not travelling by air or train.

A vehicle is booked with Irrfan’s company but no driver is willing to drive Deepika for such a long journey. Eventually, Irrfan has to drive them and this drive is a fun ride for the audience. This is where the film takes a detour from toilet humour and road show and introduces a bit of family and traditions.

Bachchan was never in favour of selling his ancestral home while Deepika was. There a is a third influence as dumb sounding cab driver who, they learn is the owner of the fleet. It turns out he is not dumb but very clever and logical. His suggestions help Bachchan and Deepika change their way of thinking. Thanks to him, even Deepika is convinced that the ancestral property should not be sold.

Bachchan’s one ultimate aim in life is to get rid of his constipation before he dies. But, before that, he also wants to live a normal life. Towards this end, one fine day, he borrows the house help’s bicycle and goes on a 25 km ride through Kolkata and gorges on street food. With that, he also comes out of his psychosomatic cocoon and realises his wish of a clear stomach for once!

The side track is about Irrfan and Deepika’s chemistry. Hard as she tries not to get impressed with his native intelligence, eventually, she does develop a soft corner for him.

This is a very clever and balanced script which is thoroughly enjoyable. Shoojit Sircar, who also directed Vicky Donor, from Juhi’s script, does a neat job once again with Piku. Dialogues are quirky at times to blend with Bachchan’s character and generally witty. Music is functional. Cinematography is pleasing. Editing is crisp. The film is all about performances and all three, Bachchan, Irrfan and Deepika excel. Maoushumi Chatterjee in a brief role is as lively as ever. Raguveer Yadav is good.

Piku is an entertainer all the way and despite the tepid opening response, it should pick up over the weekend.

Producers: N P Singh, Ronnie Lahiri, Sneha Rajani
    Director: Shoojit Sircar
Cast:Amitabh Bachchan, Deepika Padukone, Irrfan Khan, Moushumi Chatterjee, Raghuveer Yadav, Jishu Sengupta

  • Salman Khan jailed for 5 years in hit-and-run case, gets two days’ interim bail

Salman Khan jailed for 5 years in hit-and-run case, gets two days’ interim bail

NEW DELHI: Actor Salman Khan was today convicted by a Mumbai Sessions court for five years for killing a homeless man in a 2002 hit-and-run case.

The 49-year old actor who had been charged with culpable homicide was directed to be taken to jail today itself.

However, the Bombay High Court granted him interim bail for two days after his case was argued by senior counsel Harish Salve, who said no person could be jailed on the basis of a partial order. He said his client had only been read out the operative portion.

The dead man, 38-year-old Noor Ullah Khan, was among five people who were run over in the incident. Late on the night of 28 September 2002, Khan’s Toyota Land Cruiser hit the American Express Bakery in the Bandra area of Mumbai.

Khan had sought to say his driver was behind the wheel, but Judge DW Deshpande said the actor was driving the car and was under the influence of alcohol at the time.

“You were driving the car; you were under the influence of alcohol,” he told the actor as soon as the court proceedings began.

Khan has been booked under Section 304 A of the Indian Penal Code (rash and negligent driving); 279 (rash driving); 337 (causing minor injuries); 338 (causing major injuries) 427 (negligence), and under Motor Vehicle Act Sections 34 (a), (b) read with 181 (driving vehicle in contravention of rules); 185 (driving at great speed after consuming alcohol).

The arguments by lawyers on his sentence went on for about three years, during which time who was dressed in a white shirt remained calm and composed. His family and friends inside the court were hoping that he would get a jail term of three years or less.

But Khan broke down when the judge pronounced his sentence and he was visibly upset when his sisters tried to comfort him.

One of Bollywood’s busiest stars having appeared in more than 80 Hindi-language films, Khan’s jail sentence is bound to affect the film projects he was working in.

The prosecution alleged that Khan had been driving the car while drunk, both of which charges the actor denied in court in March. But many witnesses disagreed.

A constable attached to Khan’s security detail said in a statement to the police that the “drunk” actor had lost control of the car. The policeman died in 2007 of tuberculosis.

In April, Khan’s driver told the court that he had crashed the car after a tyre burst but the court did not accept that version.

Khan had been charged with culpable homicide not amounting to murder in October 2001 and arrested but granted bail. In May 2003, the Court rejected his plea to drop culpable homicide charge and but in June 2003 the Bombay High Court dropped culpable homicide charge but said he be tried for rash and negligent driving.

Khan will also be taken for a medical examination before being sent to jail. His lawyers had told the court today that he had heart and neurological problems. The judge had remained unmoved.

Khan is the second actor to have gone to jail recently, the earlier being Sanjay Dutt.

In addition to his acting career, Khan is a stage performer and an active humanitarian through his charity organisation Being Human.

The actor has two film releases lined up for this year namely Bajrangi Bhaijaan and Prem Ratan Dhan Paayo.

Apart from films, the actor also hosts the television reality show Bigg Boss on Colors.

  • Prachi Desai to star in ‘Rock On’ sequel

Prachi Desai to star in ‘Rock On’ sequel

MUMBAI: Actress Prachi Desai, who made her Bollywood debut with the Farhan Akhtar-starrer, Rock On in 2008, is now all set to feature in its sequel Rock On!! 2.

Desai said, “It is going to be a special project for me and Farhan as it was our first film together.”

As she gears up for her upcoming projects, the actress explains why she has stayed away from the big screen. “It wasn’t a conscious move. There are a couple of films, which I was supposed to do, but didn’t happen for various reasons,” she said.

Apart from Rock On!! 2, Desai will feature in cricketer Mohammad Azharuddin’s biopic starring Emraan Hashmi, where she will essay the role of Azharuddin’s first wife Naureen. “We know about Azharuddin’s life on field, but not much about Naureen. I’m getting to know a lot more about her from our director and writers,” said Desai.

  • ‘Gabbar Is Back’ earns Rs 36.6 crore at BO

‘Gabbar Is Back’ earns Rs 36.6 crore at BO

MUMBAI: Akshay Kumar’s oft repeated theme of anti-establishment Gabbar Is Back, has benefitted thanks to it being a kind of solo release for the audience starved of  commercial mass film with a popular star this year so far.

The film will enjoy a four day weekend in many states while it has a three day holiday run in other states (May Day on 1 May and Buddha Purnima on 4 May). The film opened to average response, dropping further on Saturday.

The collections got better on Sunday ending its first three days with Rs 36.6 crore. The negative word of mouth seems to have caught up with the film, which will limit its prospects as the week progresses.

The other release of the week, Sabki Bajegi Band, remained a nonstarter with five to 10 occupants in the audience on the opening day.

Jai Ho! Democracy proves to be a major disaster managing to collect just about Rs 18 lakh in its first week.

Ishq Ke Parinde goes unnoticed causing heartburns to both, the makers as well as the exhibitors.

Kagaz Ke Fools, it seems, marks the end of Vinay Pathak kind of comedies. The film manages just about Rs 40 lakh for its first week’s run.

Mr X suffered due to its mediocre script and treatment and dropped to about a little less than 10 per cent of its first week figures in its week two. The film managed a bare Rs 2.4 crore to take its two week tally to Rs 20.95 crore.

Margarita With A Straw sustains on the lower side, though. The film collects Rs 1.75 crore in its second week, taking its two week tally to Rs 5.25 crore.

Ek Paheli Leela adds Rs 30 lakh in its third week to take its three week total to Rs 21.14 crore.

Dharam Sankat Mein has added Rs 25 lakh in its third week taking its three week tally to Rs 9 crore.

Detective Byomkesh Bakshy has collected Rs 40 lakh in its fourth week to take its four week total to Rs 27.08 crore.
