    Ogilvy India makes key top-level appointments

    MUMBAI: Advertising agency Ogilvy India has announced the appointment of Prem Narayan as its new chief strategy officer and Balagopalan Ganapathy as the new head of planning, Ogilvy Mumbai. Narayan and Ganapathy have started in their respective roles with immediate effect.

    In his capacity as chief strategy officer, Narayan will lead the planning team to drive the national agenda. He will also continue to partner the CCOs and business heads to deliver creative solutions to clients nationally. Narayan will report directly to Kunal Jeswani.

    Narayan has been with Ogilvy since 2004. He has been part of the team that pioneered the planning function in the agency. He has worked on many clients during this journey – Asian Paints, Bajaj, Blue Star, Castrol, Ceat, GreenPly, ICICI Bank, MP Birla Group, Tata Motors, Tata Sky, Unilever, Zandu to name a few. He has partnered creative agencies to generate outstanding work with brands like Asian Paints, Tata Safari, Bru, Hamam and Red Label. He has won the respect and love of all clients, creative and client servicing partners he has worked with. He has won many Effies on his brands (including last year’s AME agency of year).

    Ogilvy India vice chairman and director of client relation Madhukar Sabnavis says, “Prem and Ganapathy are two accomplished planners of Ogilvy who have contributed to function in the last decade; their promotion is a recognition of this.     Ganapathy, aka Guns, will report to Narayan and work with the city business heads and CCOs to drive the planning agenda for Mumbai office. Guns has been part of the planning team since 2005. He has built strong relationships and been part of the team that has done stellar work on brands such as Asian Paints, Bajaj, Cadbury, Home Center, JSW, ITC and Pidilite to name a few. He has been the agency’s Effectiveness Champion for years- and the first and only IPA winner for Cadbury Dairy Milk in 2013. Guns is a much admired planning leader who has won the love and respect of every client he has worked with.

    IAA’s new initiative seeks to end rigidity in office timings

    A new social initiative titled #WorkToLiveToWork has been undertaken by the International Advertising Association’s (IAA) India chapter with Nandini Dias, managing committee member of IAA and CEO of Lodestar India, at the helm. Dias lost two colleagues in separate accidents related to railways during rush hour in the last 18 months.

    Dias has conceptualised #WorkToLiveToWork to urge CEOs/HR heads to help Mumbai-based companies to implement flexible office timings for employees so that they don’t risk their lives to reach their workplaces.

    Ramesh Narayan, President, IAA India Chapter, said, “Every year IAA undertakes initiatives to show that communication can be an effective force for the good of society. This year Nandini Dias is spearheading this meaningful project.”

    The initiative intends to end the irrational rigidity in Mumbai’s office timings and save lives. Reports show that every day approximately nine people die on the suburban rail network, which is nearly 3,300 people in a year. Many of these people travel in the overcrowded transit system just to avoid a late mark as that leads to penalty on their salary.

    A campaign has also been designed around #WorkToLiveToWork.

    “Instead of waiting for the transport infrastructure to be fixed, which would obviously take a long time, Dias’ idea was as practical as it was simple. When asked, most CEOs and HR heads agree that flexi timing is a good idea. In fact many also say that in their office, they had implemented flexi timings since a couple of years. The fact is that while heads of offices are not against it, they have done very little to actually roll it out. There is no data to say how many people actually are on flexi timing. Also if it was real then the rush hour traffic would have eased out,” he added.

    Said Dias, “I am urging all companies to come forward and adopt this to save the lives of Mumbaikars. Let’s all agree that, besides expressing outrage we need to help the government in mitigating the crisis. So, whether you are an employer or an employee, think about it, talk about it, bring it up as often as you can to drive change and save lives. Even if we reduce the number of people losing life from nine to seven per day, we would have saved over 700 lives in a year.”

    To take this initiative forward, besides Lodestar UM, IAA has the support of Taproot Dentsu that created the communication. The Economic Times, Hindustan Times, Indian Express, Laqshya Media and Radio City have come on board as media partners.

    Industry applauds Sam Balsara as he turns 67

    MUMBAI: He is a man of small stature and has a voice that at times breaks into a squeak. But veteran ad man Sam Balsara–who is celebrating his sixty-seventh birthday today–is one of the giants of Indian advertising whose words have boomed across the industry and made even the most powerful sit up, take note – and follow.

    Born in the small city of Bulsar–now called Valsad–in Gujarat, Blasara clearly was meant for bigger things right from the beginning. He went on to complete his management post graduation from the Jamnalal Bajaj Institute of Management Studies. He began his career working as a marketing executive at Sarabhais and Cadbury. Later he switched to advertising, working with Hindustan Thompson Associates’ second agency Contract Advertising. He then moved on to a fledgling outfit  called Mudra then headed by (the now late) AG Krishnamurthy and  went to lead its Mumbai office for four years.

    But working for someone else didn’t pacify his hunger to make a mark in the world. That’s when he decided to become an entrepreneur and partnered a fledgling agency called Madison which he took over totally later in 1988.

    What started as a small company with only two clients back then, namely Godrej and Nelco, today has 24 business units across 11 specialised functions of advertising, media, business analytics, outdoor, activation, events, PR, retail, entertainment, mobile and sports. The gross billing of Madison World today stands at around Rs 3,700 crore. 

    The chairman & managing director at Madison World, Sam Balsara has seen the industry evolve and go through to various upheavals and transformation and the man still gives novel agencies a run for their money.

    He got his daughter Lara Balsara Vajifdar on board as a management trainee in Madison in 2004 and today she has risen to become the executive director, Madison World, having played a significant role building the  brand over the past decade.

    Working with your family has its own perks. But things can get tricky and awkward at times and one has to know how to manage the on-off switch. Sam Balsara does it well. Something that’s vouched for by Lara who emphasizes that her father is a very different person at home.

    “At work he is a lot more formal, objective, focused, but at home, although he does work a fair bit at home too, he is more relaxed. It is a treat to watch him interact and get bullied by his grand children,” says the mother of two.

    Madison World is set to compete 30 years of its business in March this year and people have been talking again about Balsara retiring from his position or selling off the agency. The on and off conversations have been going on for quite a few years on whether Madison World would begin active dialogue with any holding company for a sale or merger this year. And the chatter is pretty much justified as Madison is amongst the rare few Indian owned advertising agencies that is consistently outperforming its opponents that come with global ancestry and backing. But Balsara has always rubbished these rumours as he has no intentions of selling the company any time soon. 

    Lara points out that her father is a great man-manager as he always believes in leading by example. “He commands respect rather than demanding it and gives senior people the freedom to shape and drive their businesses,” she adds. 

    Sam Balara has been rated the most influential person in media and is a recipient of the AAAI (Advertising Agencies Association of India ) Lifetime Achievement Award. He has served as of AAAI president from 2002 to 2004, Advertising Standards Council of India (ASCI) chairman from 2000 to 2001, and has been The Advertising Club president for three terms from 1989 to 1992. 

    Although he isn’t likely to be in the city during the day to celebrate his birthday, the family is set to attend a function later in the evening.

    MUMBAI: Publicis Communications has announced the appointment of Paritosh Srivastava as its new chief operating officer for Publicis Beehive. He steps in place of Sanjit Shastri, who passed away in September 2017 due to cardiac arrest. The appointment is effective immediately.

    Srivastava will continue to lead Publicis Ambience as its COO. He will report to Srija Chatterjee who is the managing director at Publicis Worldwide India. 

    Publicis Beehive is the advertising agency under Publicis Worldwide, India and is focused on serving startups and entrepreneurial ventures, and manages media buying, creative, PR and activation to drive growth for clients.     MUMBAI: Dentsu X, an integrated media specialist from Dentsu Aegis Network, has roped in Arabinda Ghosh as chief strategy officer. He will report to Roopam Garg, chief client officer, dentsu X India and will be based out of Delhi.

    Ghosh brings with him extensive experience in research and planning spanning two decades. He has worked with big research firms in India such as the Kantar brands–IMRB, TNS, Millward Brown, and Nielsen. 

    During his last stint at Kantar, he was the key consultant to Coke and ABInBev for their branding and communication development strategy and has also guided clients on the effectiveness of cross-media impact and how to harness and optimise the consumer journey to achieve the desired brand objectives.

    Media and marketing professionals most vacation deprived: Expedia Report 2017

    MUMBAI: Majority of media and marketing professionals are sleep-starved, according to Expedia’s new edition of Vacation Deprivation Report 2017, stating that they cannot afford to take a holiday. 

    The study was conducted online between 4 September and 15 September 2017 on behalf of Expedia by Northstar Research Partners. The company surveyed 15,081 working adults across 30 countries.

    The report states that 66 per cent respondents of those surveyed from the media and marketing sectors said they don’t take vacations because they cannot afford a holiday or get out of work.

    Millennials are the most vacation-deprived age group and also receive the least vacation time. At 53 per cent, they are also the most likely to shorten their trips due to impending workload.

    Professionals in the government and education sectors are found to be the least vacation deprived.

    The study revealed that after media and marketing sector professionals, about 62 per cent of those in the food and beverage sector said they don’t have enough holidays, followed by agriculture with 56 per cent, transportation and travel with 56 per cent, business and consulting around 55 per cent, and finance and legal at 55 per cent.

    Furthermore, the study said that professionals in government, health, transportation and travel, real estate, business and consulting and manufacturing and technology sectors have not taken a holiday in the last six months.

    Moreover, 35 per cent of professionals in sectors like agriculture, media and marketing, food and beverage, retail and education said they are vacation deprived mainly because they cannot afford to take a holiday. In sectors like finance and legal, however, 28 per cent professionals attribute it to not getting time off from work.

    Dominic Braganza joins Dentsu Webchutney as creative director

    MUMBAI: Digital agency, Dentsu Webchutney has roped in Dominic Braganza as creative director. He will be based out of Delhi and will report to Anil Kumar, EVP and branch head.

    Dominic’s advertising journey started in 2003 as an account manager leading up to marketing manager. He was trained by some of India’s finest advertising craftsmen and saw his way to picking up a slew of ABBYs every year from 2012 to 2017, which includes a Film Gold and Film Silver for his first two TV commercials. He was the one behind the somewhat controversial (and later awarded) recruitment campaign for Foolish, which went viral on April Fool’s Day 2016, trolling the who’s who of ad-land. Dominic’s last stint was at ITSA as creative director.

    Over the course of his career, Dominic has written and directed campaigns for brands like Groupon (later renamed Nearbuy), RedBull, BigRock, Rustomjee, Gelusil, Kit-Kat, Airtel, Invest India, and HCL Technologies.

    People’s mindset determines workplace safety: Havas’ Anita Nayyar

    MUMBAI: Getting a job is no easy task but the place you spend nearly 9-12 hours of your day can turn into a nightmare for some women. Men touching colleagues inappropriately or passing lewd comments tend to become things that form a part of the office culture.

    Hence, it is of utmost importance that the workplace has a healthy and friendly environment. Yet, more often than not, friendly gestures by colleagues or bosses tend to overreach their professional confines creating an uncomfortable situation for women, leading to a case of sexual harassment.

    There has been no dearth of cases of sexual harassment at prominent companies over the last few months. It blew out of proportion when Hollywood’s most revered mogul and influential kingpin, Harvey Weinstein, was accused of sexually harassing and abusing women for nearly 30 years. Soon after the news broke, numerous people either used the #metoo hashtag or referenced it when discussing their experiences with inappropriate behaviour.

    This is not restricted to Hollywood, Silicon Valley or newsrooms. The issue is as pertinent in India as much as it is in the West. Producers and directors asking for sexual favours in return for a role in a movie or a TV show is not news anymore. The most recent case of a person in power taking advantage of his position was TVF CEO Arunabh Kumar.

    Sexual harassment isn’t restricted to just behaviours of a sexual nature. By definition, it is an unwelcome sexually determined behaviour (whether directly or by implication) as physical contact and advances, a demand or request for sexual favours, making sexually coloured remarks, showing pornography or any other unwelcome physical, verbal, or non-verbal conduct of sexual nature.

    To address the issue, Indian Supreme Court in 1997, directed all corporations to have a mandatory Vishakha Guidelines Internal Complaints Committee at all workplaces, headed by a woman employee, with not less than half of its members being women. All complaints of sexual harassment by any woman employee would be directed to this committee. The committee advises the victim on further course of action and recommends to the management the course of action against the person accused of harassment.

    But what is the ground reality when it comes to the advertising and media world? Indiantelevision.com got talking to Havas Media Group CEO India and South Asia Anita Nayyar, who is known to be stalwart and valorous in expressing her point of view. She spoke to us about their adherence to the Vishakha Guidelines, safety measures undertaken by the company, need for the industry to come together for this and more. Excerpts:

    Does Havas Media have a sexual harassment committee (the Vishakha committee) in place for women employees?

    Yes, the committee consists of senior executives including me, two women HR executives and an external legal counsellor. We have a proper time-bound complaint mechanism in place to redress such matters where both parties (victim & the accused) are called and talked to separately. I’m glad though that we haven’t had to call upon this committee because, at Havas, we drive a zero-tolerance culture against sexual harassment.

    What are the measures that Havas Media undertakes to ensure women safety?

    I believe there are a lot of women who are ignorant about this subject and do not even realise if they are being harassed. Hence, awareness is of utmost importance according to me. At Havas, we conduct monthly town halls where such topics are addressed and talked about openly. We also conduct such sessions for only women employees. Working late hours is often unavoidable in agencies. While we provide cab facilities to all employees in such cases, for female employees it is mandatory that they are escorted by security/office person.

    Is the Indian media environment a safer place for women to work in as compared to other industries?

    Industries are made up of people and people and their mindsets determine how safe a workplace is. The more open the environment, the much safer, thereby creating a culture of respect, equality and no-nonsense. 

    Is the Indian media a better place to work at as opposed to the West where we are seeing a lot of such cases recently? Or is it here people choose to remain silent?

    It happens everywhere. It is true that Indian women choose to succumb to societal pressures much easier than their western counterparts and refrain from talking about it. But there is a wave of change we’re seeing in the wake of the recent #MeToo revelations. We are seeing more women come out of their shells and make open confessions. Not to forget the contribution of some supportive men.

    What more needs to be done to ensure a better work environment for female employees?

    In a recent announcement made by our global CEO, Yannick Bollore, he said “Havas will be launching two new mandatory global online training for all employees that cover not only harassment but also business ethics. Harassment can take on many forms, both physical and verbal. Neither is acceptable. These courses will reinforce the behaviours expected of Havas employees.” He added, “Respect is at the core of our values at Havas.”

    MUMBAI: Publicis India has announced the appointment of Nikhil Kumar as vice president. Based out of Mumbai, Nikhil will focus on both organic and inorganic growth for the agency. 

    Nikhil Kumar will report to Publicis India COO Paritosh Srivastava. 

    Nikhil joins Publics India from Bennett Coleman & Co Ltd where he was the chief manager for The Economic Times (ET), looking after the brand performance and brand health of ET while heading the Brand Equity product portfolio.

    Speaking on his appointment, Srivastava says, “We are happy to have Nikhil Kumar on-board the agency. His experience across diverse brands & agencies including Jet Airways, MullenLowe Lintas Group, Bosch & Siemens and ET will be key in translating the client’s business needs into distinctive brand strategies. In addition, his exposure within the product development domain and his ability to gauge the profitability of brands will further assist agency partners in creating a sustainable impact for their brands.
