Parle goes outdoors with new litter free campaign

MUMBAI: Media and manufacturing industries are abuzz with talks of Parle Products new Out Of Home (OOH) campaign in Delhi-NCR that upholds its pan India ‘Litter Free’ CSR project, backed by television ad campaigns.

Parle Products general manager marketing Pravin Kulkarni said, “The OOH campaign is aimed at capturing our youth’s attention, in their environment, with peers and passers-by; prompting conversations and driving them to take responsibility and stop littering. We are already seeing that littering has reduced in targeted locations.”

This high decibel awareness campaign, which took Cyber City and Cyber Hub by storm, has been developed by Havas Media Group’s OOH and activation brand Havas Media Active, whereas the TV commercial (TVC) and poster has been created by Thought shop Advertising and Film Productions chief creative director Vipin Dhyani.

When queried about their choice of venue, Havas Media Group India CEO Anita Nayyar explained, “We decided to take the OOH route and zeroed in on Delhi-NCR to catch en-mass this audience. To give a sense of scale, only Cyber City has 4 lakh working professionals and 50,000 visitors every day, which this campaign is addressing.”

As part of the campaign, OOH TV screens in buildings are playing three variations of the Parle Litter Free TVC – the Corporate Boss, the Class Monitor and Lady in the Shopping Mall looking for Mr. Clean. Along with captivating messages like – “Apnegharkosaafrakhnasabkoatahai. Tohsadkonkokyonahin?” and “Yehkachrewala ka kaamhai. It’s everyone’s responsibility,” the campaign makes it impossible for passersby to ignore the message.

  • Kalyan Jewellers to withdraw ‘racist’ ad featuring Aishwarya Rai Bachchan

Kalyan Jewellers to withdraw ‘racist’ ad featuring Aishwarya Rai Bachchan

MUMBAI: Aishwarya Rai Bachchan is in the line of fire over a print advertisement for Kalyan Jewellers featuring her.

Aishwarya faced the fury of activists for the “offensive” advertisement that shows a dark child carrying an umbrella over her head. However the actress has said that the actual image was changed by the brand.

As a result of this, Kalyan Jewellers is in the process of withdrawing this creative from its campaign. In an official statement, the jewellery brand said, “This creative was intended to present royalty, timeless beauty and elegance. If we have, inadvertently, hurt the sentiments of any individual or organization, we deeply regret the same.”

A group comprising a feminist activist, a former chairperson of National Commission for Protection of Child Rights among others wrote an open letter to slam the actress’ print ad, which they felt also promoted child labour.

“We wish to convey our dismay at the concept of this advertisement, and that you have, perhaps unthinkingly, associated with such a regressive portrayal of a child to sell a product,” read the open letter.

“As an influential member of the Indian film industry and a popular star with a large fan following, we trust that you wish to use your image in a manner that promotes progressive thought and action, and would not knowingly promote regressive images that are racist and go against child rights,” it further read.

Replying to the open letter, Aishwarya issued a statement saying, “On the onset we would like to thank you on drawing our attention to the observation of the perception of the advertisement. Here is an attachment of the shot taken by somebody during the shoot. The final layout of the ad is entirely the prerogative of the creative team for a brand. However, shall forward your article as a viewpoint that can be taken into consideration by the creative team of professional working on the brand visual communication. Thank you once again.”

It may be recalled that Aishwarya along with her father-in-law Amitabh Bachchan endorses Kalyan Jewellers and the two were recently in Chennai to inaugurate the brand’s new store.

ShopClues’ TVC named best ad campaign at Indian e-retail Awards

MUMBAI: At the recently held Indian e-retail Awards 2015, ShopClues’ TVC ‘From Ding to Dong’ released in September 2014 won the ‘Advertising Campaign of the Year.’

Created by Enormous Brands, Mumbai, the TV ad campaign highlighted the online retailer’s value proposition of being the ultimate destination for a wide variety of products available at wholesale rates.

ShopClues.com co-founder and CMO Radhika Aggarwal said, “We are thrilled at receiving an award for a TVC we worked really hard for. Congratulations are also in order for our creative agency and the marketing team which spearheaded the entire idea and its execution. A man from a balcony picks up a hat from the over-sized stack of goods and says, ‘Saara wholesale ka market… theek aapke ghar tak…har item wholesale rate par.’  The film ends with the tagline, ‘Sab kuch wholesale rate pe, Ding Se Lekar Dong‘ (everything at wholesale rates, from ding to dong).

The Indian e-Retail Awards recognise excellence in e-retail and multi-channel initiatives by retailers.

  • Ad men endorse Crash the IPL, but say agencies need not worry

Ad men endorse Crash the IPL, but say agencies need not worry

MUMBAI: PepsiCo is known for its innovations when it comes to television commercials, from Yeh Hai Youngistan Meri Jaan to the Cricket VS Football ad, featuring football legends like Frank Lampard, Fernendo Torres, Didier Drogba and Indian youngsters Suresh Raina, MS Dhoni, Virat Kohli and Harbhajan Singh. Be it cricket or football world cup or Indian Premier League (IPL), Pepsi has always maintained its elegance while promoting them by hiring a top class creative agency, roping in big names as brand ambassadors and spending bagfuls of money. However, the 2015 IPL saw an absolute new initiative from the cola giant, where it handed the creative reigns of its ads to the consumer.

Pepsi launched an ad film competition where consumers were asked to submit a 30 second ad film. The best of the lot would be showcased as a TVC (television commercial), besides that the winner of a phase would get a cash prize of Rs 1,00,000. Five such winners would be judged by a panel which comprises Bollywood actor Ranbir Kapoor, music director Pritam Chakraborty, film producer and director Gautham Menon, Pepsico India senior director marketing Ruchira Jaitly and advertising veteran-turned author Anuja Chauhan. Besides, the cash prize winner also gets the opportunity to enjoy the match from the Pepsi VIP box.

Not many knew about Nikita Deshpande before the ad she made got recognition and was telecast on television. Deshpande is an aspiring filmmaker and has been working in the film industry. With the help of her friends, she ensured that they don’t leave any stone unturned. From VFX to colour correction, from set designing to voice modulation, from creativity to technicality, the ad ticked all the check boxes. Practically by paying just Rs 1,00,000, Pepsi got a quality ad without holding numerous meetings with creative agencies.

PepsiCo India Holdings chairman and CEO D Shivakumar was asked during Goafest if consumers started making ads, what will agencies do? He replied, “The agency is very much involved in the campaign as a jury member and they will ensure that the content that’s showcased isn’t derogatory or controversial.”

Ad filmmakers are the best story tellers and have the capacity to change the fate of brand with just one ad. However, here instead of making TVCs, they are judging them. This opens the door for many other companies too. If they aren’t satisfied with the creative agency or vice versa and they have a good consumer connection, they may ask consumers to make ads instead of agencies. However this has the possibility to irk the advertising fraternity.

Ogilvy and Mather national creative director Rajiv Rao believes that Pepsi’s campaign is an amazing example of crowd sourcing. He says, “I don’t think advertising has to worry about anything. Crash the Pepsi IPL is also a creative idea. It is an amazing concept to engage consumers and if you have a platform like IPL and a product like Pepsi, you can experiment and implement such ideas. All the ads that have been aired would have been rejected if an agency would have approached with it. The concept behind crash the Pepsi IPL is not the video but the engagement and this is not something new. Twenty years back also agencies interacted with consumers for taglines and slogans. This is a one of a kind campaign where the motto was to make the country a part of it. At the end of the day, people want to see quality ads executed exclusively, which only the ad agencies or evolved ad film makers can produce. Whenever an ad agency make an ad its tested, well researched and then executed and hence in my opinion Crash the IPL is a great concept but advertising agencies have nothing to worry about. The bottom line is – Not everyone can make an ad.”

On the possibilities of the advertising fraternity getting impacted by Crash The IPL campaign, Lowe Lintas + partners national creative director Arun Iyer says, “I think it is an interesting and creative idea when it comes to engagement. People will submit good videos and some would be silly too. I don’t see any possibility of the advertising fraternity facing a blow of any sorts. The agency will stay relevant the way they are and we will keep making ads for various clients.”

A source from the advertising fraternity asserts, “There will be few more attempts by different brands and not all will succeed. Pepsi’s campaign has given an option to brands not satisfied with the agencies to try something different and this thought will stay in the mind of the agencies when they go for a client meeting. Overall, if we keep doing quality work, no one will be able to take our place. Yes, while consumers are making the ad, the brand is also surrounded by popular figures like Virat Kohli and Ranbir Kapoor. We have to keep that in mind too.”

Maxus managing partner South India & South Asia Sanchayeeta Verma opines, “Our world has changed. Both professional broadcast content and amateur but exceptional user-generated content co-exist today and there is a place and need for both. This is a brave move by Pepsi, acknowledging what is happening in the real world and acting on it. The communication solutions that agencies provide don’t exist outside the real world and they should embrace this trend, rather than worry about it. Our content teams at Maxus have spotted this trend in the past and done some very compelling work for our brands, using this trend.”

Stalwarts like Satyajit Ray and Christopher Nolan started their career making ad for different brands, and the breed keeps multiplying with time. Ad filmmakers are always tagged as the best story tellers but sometime the standards does tend to dip. Crash the IPL campaign is a wakeup call for agencies… till they manage to stay unique, creative and allusive, no one can take their place, but if they ever become lackadaisical, there are other options too.

  • Parle Agro partners Posterscope for Frooti rebranding campaign

Parle Agro partners Posterscope for Frooti rebranding campaign

MUMBAI: When Parle Agro decided to introduce a refreshingly new visual identity for its legendary mango drink ‘Frooti’, it vested the responsibility with Posterscope India for its Out-of-Home (OOH) communication.

The new Frooti campaign is designed to be impactful with bold graphics and vibrant colours, wherein the communications focus is entirely on the visuals of the new packs that are depicted to be larger-than-life.

The task put forth by the Parle Agro team to Posterscope India was to create a buzz about the brand’s new look and leave a lasting impression on the consumer’s mind such that it would support and boost its on-ground visibility.

Posterscope conceptualised and created an outdoor implementation strategy for Frooti that was nothing less than omnipresent. It delivered month-long visibility to the brand across 100+ markets pan India to address the objective of establishing the product as a leader and as the voice of authority in its category. The campaign was not just high impact, juxtaposed against sustained visibility, but also exhibited high cost efficiency.

Using its novel research study – Outdoor Consumer Survey (OCS), Posterscope conducted an analysis to target consumers wherein it identified the most relevant touch-points and high footfall locations across market segments. Further, with the help of its proprietary ‘Prism’ suite of tools, Posterscope created a judicious mix of impact, reach, frequency and intrigue by using a combination of large and small format media units.

Meticulous planning was undertaken for appropriate media selection and media placement at key high traffic locations, arterial roads, congregation points, product consumption locations, hangout places and transit places. While the largeness was provided through billboards, the differentiation was created by the right kind of media mix that encapsulated more than 20 different outdoor media formats including street furniture and transit media.

To stand out and create differentiation in the cluttered metro markets, Posterscope created media clusters. For this, a combination of multiple media touch points were rolled-out within close proximity to create ‘The Frooti Life Zone’.

The challenge for the Posterscope team was to get the campaign live almost simultaneously across a humungous geographical spread of metros, state capitals, tier 1 and tier 2 towns, tourist locations and national highways.

Additionally, there were multiple creatives manifesting “The Frooti Life” that had to be used prudently to offer visual freshness to the campaign. It required extensive implementation, planning and flawless coordination from the Posterscope teams across regions to achieve this herculean task.

Parle Agro JMD and CMO Nadia Chauhan said, “We are employing a differentiated marketing strategy with the entire brand revamp and new positioning for Frooti. With our new campaign, we want to make the brand relevant and appealing to consumers across generations and build higher aspirational values around it.”

Posterscope APAC regional director Haresh Nayak added, “We are glad to be associated with the brand-revamping exercise of Frooti ensuring the creating of high impact visibility with the wide spread outdoor campaign.”

Consequent to the task undertaken, the result was an extremely visible outdoor media campaign that was delivered seamlessly across 100+ markets and entailing nearly 2000 media units – all implemented in record time.

  • KidZania rings in summer with ‘Scrapbook’ campaign

KidZania rings in summer with ‘Scrapbook’ campaign

MUMBAI: Getting started is simple: pick an occupation, learn about the job, don a uniform, and start earning, spend kidzos… and have fun! There is one such destination, which provides all of this. With this core thought, to ignite the hearts and minds of kids everywhere by empowering them to make the world a better place, KidZania was born in India in 2013.

KidZania offers a variety of activities to suit multiple interests of children. The facility has various establishments with specific role-playing activities that kids can take up as jobs. Supervisors would help children identify their aptitude and make their first resume, based on their interests.

To double up the fun quotient as the summer sets in, the company is set to roll out its new campaign called ‘My Summer Scrapbook’ will go live from 18 April at R-City Mall in Mumbai’s Ghatkopar suburb.

KidZania chief marketing officer Viraj jit Singh feels that summer is the best time to engage with kids and parents. “With summer holidays, parents and families look at means of entertainment for kids and this is where we actually speak over the next two months,” said Singh.

Scrapbook is something we all have grown up with. “The idea of a scrapbook allows us to tell the child that it’s a great place for them to be able to create memories and that they would have many activities throughout summer to fill up the whole scrapbook,” he added.

To connect better with the target audience between 4-14 for activities and parents between the ages of 24-48, this year KidZania is aiming at different mediums in the Mumbai and Pune markets. Unlike last year, where the summer campaign focused more on OOH, this year it spreads across platforms. Starting from print and digital, it will be followed by television, radio and below-the-line activities (BTL). With close to 6,00,000 visitors till date, KidZania aims to take the number even higher this year with its aggressive campaign.

    An insightful journey

Right from conceptualizing to execution of the campaign, the marketing team took about three months. Throwing light on the company’s journey with the consumer, Singh believes that it was most important to get an insight for the campaign. “We have on an average 800-1000 families walking in every day and we definitely get some insights and feedback from them,” he said.

For KidZania, the insights start from perception of the brand and where the brand stands. “The insight is about what and why people would like to step out in the summer and what they would want to do,” he added.

The company is also looking to convey the message that Kidzania stands not just for fun but also for learning.

The campaign, which has been conceived in-house, connects well with both, children as well as adults. “For the first time, we have got to use multiple mediums. Though it is a small destination in Bombay, I think that we have reached a stage where we are confident that we will be able to communicate to a lot of people about what we show,” Singh asserted.

    Engagement with the brands

Since its inception in India, KidZania has attracted 33 brands on-board till date, of these are Yes Bank, Coca Cola, Cadbury’s, Hyundai Bajaj and Amity University etc to Mumbai’s exceptional Dabbawalla’s and Bollywood Academy to name a few.

According to KidZania, brand partners must be aligned to the philosophy of reaching out to kids as ‘responsible brands’. “The brands through their engagement with kids create an environment that empowers them for self-development. This creates an inequitable impact that has a positive long-lasting impression on future consumers and their parents. For instance, a brand like Yes Bank instills the nuances of financial literacy and the importance of saving money through the banking activity, which is integral to KidZania. Amity creates a replica of their university where it teaches kids the value of education – higher education can get them better jobs and a higher pay,” Singh said.

Singh informs that all the brands that KidZania partners with are all responsible brands in the eyes of the adults. “They too want to start conversation between kids and parents. Brands in Mumbai are extremely happy and excited to partner with us and each one of them has a very different objective for being here.”

Built on a budget of Rs 100 crore, the company looks to recover 30-35 per cent of the cost from partners and 60-70 per cent from ticket sales.

Of the total budget earmarked for the marketing campaign this summer, the company will be spending 40 per cent on TV, 35 per cent on print, 15 per cent on radio and 10 per cent on digital.

    Future roadmap

KidZania, successfully established in Mumbai, is now all set to explore other metros in the country. Expanding its footprint in India, the brand has targeted Delhi NCR as its next destination.

The center in Delhi is under development and is projected to go live in March 2016. Moreover, compared to the Mumbai center, which is 75,000 sq ft, the Delhi center will be much bigger in size with 97,000 sq ft independent structure.

  • Love story to be flag bearer of Tata Sky’s disruptive initiative

Love story to be flag bearer of Tata Sky’s disruptive initiative

MUMBAI: Indian DTH player Tata Sky rattled competitors when it launched the world’s first ‘Daily Recharge’ plan for a meager Rs 8, which gave viewers the choice to enjoy TV on a daily basis.

In order to promote this disruptive concept, Tata Sky introduced a first of its kind ad campaign in association with Ogilvy & Mather, comprising a series of 13 TVCs. The campaign weaved into a love story, showcases the Daily Recharge of Rs 8 as the catalyst, igniting a love interest between two youngsters.

Set in a small town in Kashmir, 13 episodes will slowly unveil how the product works and cleverly amplify the benefits of Daily Recharge, through Mannu (Prit Kamani) and Neelu (Himani Sisodiya) the protagonists of the love story. Keeping the thrill to know ‘what happens next?’ alive, each TVC will smoothly highlight how the Daily Recharge enables convenience and value for money. The ad will also aptly shows how Daily Recharge empowers subscribers to be in control of their TV expenses, conveying – Jis din TV dekho sirf uss din ke paise do (You only pay for the day you watch TV).

Speaking to Indiantelevision.com on the campaign insight, Ogilvy & Mather executive creative director Sukesh Nayak says, “We had to make the small towns and rural India fall in love with Daily Recharge – a product that was designed to make DTH accessible and affordable to rural and small towns in India. We launched this product with a unique love story that promotes everyday usage in an interesting manner. The promise: “Daily milenge toh pyaar to hoga hi” is a simple expression of the product benefit and the brand promise. To further reinforce daily usage, the campaign evolved over multiple episodes.”

When queried on the reason behind choosing Kashmir as the location for the ad shoot, Nayak says, “We wanted a quaint and beautiful small town setting for a romantic story, and Gulmarg is a place you would fall in love with at first sight.”

Every successful one of a kind campaign tends to start a trend and is copied by others. When queried as to whether he sees this concept becoming a trend, Nayak says, “It is not necessary that the multi-film concept will start trending, as it is the idea that drives an execution like this.”

The ads were launched during the Indian Premier League (IPL) with one episode being played each day. Of the ad’s 13 films, every episode is released simultaneously on TV and on the digital platform.

All the videos garnered substantial number of views, but an unusual trend has emerged from the campaign. Of all the eight videos released so far on the social media platform, the first has the least views while the last has the most. Talking about the same, Nayak says, “In an episodic campaign, the response peaks as the story unfolds, hence the ascending views on YouTube. We are extremely happy with the response we have got. This campaign pitches a value offering in a very emotional and endearing manner. If we look at the category both the product and campaign have a very innovative approach.”

Her film titled ‘Served’ beat over 400 films that were submitted by consumers from all over the country to become the first winner in the campaign. We had a nice and long brainstorming session amongst 12 of us and we came with the idea. The entire group was from the film fraternity and that helped a smooth execution. Quality VFX and sound engineering was also exhibited, which made the production quality allusive. The total expenditure of the film was close to Rs 3500 only. We may make a few more ads for the same campaign and in future also I aspire to make more ad films for different brands. I also have dreams of making a feature film… it’s always Dil Mange More.”

Ranbir Kapoor had earlier said, “Crash the Pepsi IPL is a first-of-its-kind campaign in India, and I am excited to team up with Pepsi in judging the entries for this creative challenge! Crash the Pepsi IPL will give people a chance to really uncork their creativity and leave a mark. It’s awesome that Pepsi has put consumers at the forefront of something as big as the Pepsi IPL – it’s a really bold move and I would expect nothing less from Pepsi!”
