Leo Burnett’s new campaign for He Deodorant sees women urging to #ShowMenSomeLove

MUMBAI: Leo Burnett’s new campaign for Emami’s He Deodorant spins an interesting twist to this year’s Men’s Day celebrations on November 19. The Indian brand that has taken a stand on International Men’s Day, has launched a new campaign with the tagline #ShowMenSomeLove platform.

The digital campaign reinforces the brand’s message that men deserve love and respect through a catchy jingle ‘Men’s Day Pe Teri Chhutti’. The unique narrative turns the spotlight on women who express their appreciation for men.

Commenting on the launch of the campaign, Emami director Harsh Agarwal said “Our effort is to do new things always. In a category where all other brands are talking about attracting the opposite sex, we believe there is a need for a different conversation. So last year we decided to stand up for men by initiating the men’s day celebration. The platform found a lot of traction and this year we are taking it forward. Celebrating Men’s day gives us an opportunity to engage with our consumers in an innovative and effective manner.”

Leo Burnett chief creative officer Raj Deepak Das also added, “After having initiated Men’s Day celebration with our #ShowMenSomeLove campaign last year, we wanted to take the narrative to another level and help create a movement in the country around Men’s Day. This year we have put a twist where women have joined in to express their solidarity with the men in their lives through a catchy quirky song.”

Last year, the brand had launched a campaign that asked women to wear blue and initiated the need for Men’s Day celebrations in India.

  • HDFC Home Loans stirs childhood memories with #BackToBachpan

HDFC Home Loans stirs childhood memories with #BackToBachpan

MUMBAI: French philosopher Gaston Bachelard had rightly said, “Like a forgotten fire, a childhood can always flare up again within us.” We often find ourselves looking out for little instances that take us back to our childhood. Understanding this sentiment, HDFC Home Loans has hooked in their online patrons with a digital Children’s Day campaign that calls on everyone to go #backtobachpan.

Through an online contest carried out on their Twitter page, the brand gave opportunity to everyone to relive their childhood by posting pictures, instances and messages that give a glimpse of what childhood means to them. No sooner did the post go live, then people poured in with tweets with #backtobachpan.

From pictures of their younger self doing goofy things, rubber eraser names old black and whites, twitterati were seen enthusiastically sharing their #backtobachpan moments, making the hashtag trend throughout the day in India.

Some of the responses are both funny as well as moving.

“Take me #BackToBachpan where i used to write my name on bench to mark it as my bench,” tweets batman_baklol, while Kanchan Negi (coool_kashish) recalls how her childhood was checkered by memories of visit to her grandmother’s place during vacations.

Not only were the replies engaging, the brand went a step ahead in engaging with those who posted for the contest by creating animated caricature pictures of the twitteratti, taking cue from their posts.

This isn’t the first time a brand has played on our heart strings with an innovative campaign on Children’s Day. In fact, Shopperstop ran a similar contest titled #BringBackTheKid last year, while Paper Boat’s inspiring TVC ‘When I grow up..”by EmotionalFulls, still remains fresh in our memory.

On that note, here’s hoping that we keep our inner child alive. Happy Children’s Day!

  • Leo Burnett innovates Slurpee cups with ‘sound’

Leo Burnett innovates Slurpee cups with ‘sound’

MUMBAI: If you are a Slurpee fan, this bit of news will definitely excite you. The legacy-like Bring Your Own Cup Day is back again and this year Slurpee and Leo Burnett Melbourne have set out to create cups out of the seemingly impossible material — sound.

The process began with recording three radio ads for this year’s BYO Cup Day, each with a voice-over and distinct soundscape in the background: a Viking opera, a football stadium full of cheering fans, and the mating calls of two ‘frisky’ whales.

“Slurpee BYO Cup Day is now an event where fans are the creators and they prove their ingenuity every year,” says Leo Burnett ECD Jason Williams. “Sound Cup is just another way to stimulate their imaginations and inspire cup creativity.”

Using a suite of digital 3D modelling tools, the sound waves from the radio ads were vectorised to create the shapes of the cups. The voice-over determined the circumference of the cups’ rims, while the peaks and troughs of the sound effects created each cup’s unique height and body shape, before all the sound-waves were meshed together.

Fans could download the 3D file and print a Sound Cup themselves, or win one on Slurpee’s Facebook page to drink, for the first time ever, out of cups made of sound for BYO Cup Day.

  • Paper Boat floats stories as brand’s core identity

Paper Boat floats stories as brand’s core identity

MUMBAI: There are certain fragrances, sites, and flavours that appeal to us just by virtue of the nostalgia they evoke within us. Three friends realized this over a lunch table on a hot Indian summer’s day, and one of them later went on to conceive Paper Boat, the popular beverage brand that served old favourites like aam panna, aam ras and chilled rasam in a new avatar.

“While the regular ‘sharing-the-dabba’ ritual was underway, my American friend tried the aam panna that had come from one of our homes,” narrates Paper Boat founder and CEO Neeraj Kakkar. “We realised that raw mango ale, a.k.a aam panna, is not available anywhere in a ready-to-drink format. We were instantly married to the idea, and that was the inception of Paper Boat.”

A product of Hector Beverages, Paper Boat found its brand identity in the indigenous flavours that we are oh so familiar with, and yet have a refreshing appeal.

Since its inception in 2013, the brand has kept its advertising strategy very simple. “We believe in life and how easy it is to be happy. There are always plenty of opportunities for simple pleasures and we just want to bring that alive. And it’s through these little joys that we wish to connect with our consumers. That basically forms the key premise of all our communication,” states Kakkar.

Explaining that their campaign focus is mostly skewed towards social media and television, Kakkar also shed light on the brand’s currently airing 20 sec TVCs. “The three 20-second TVCs are being aired on prime time across a host of English lifestyle, news as well as Hindi and English general entertainment channels with a focus on top cities. We’ve taken special care in the channel mix that we have chosen. The attempt is to make our presence felt across markets in a very targeted way,” says Kakkar, thanking Paper Boat’s creative agency Lowe Lintas,  for the innovative campaign ideas.

Further explaining the concept behind the TVCs, Lowe Lintas executive creative director Rajesh Ramaswamy adds, “Memories are not merely an advertising concept. ‘Drinks and Memories’ is the DNA of the brand. Every beverage of Paper Boat are recipes that are more than a 100 years old. Every drink has a lot of memories associated with it. So we aren’t selling drinks, we are selling memories though drinks.”

The agency has mostly stayed away from the ‘celebrity’ route with Paper Boat with the exception of singer Usha Uthup, but rather kept the faces in the TVC fresh and relatable. “We just go about casting people who suit the role. They need to reflect a certain personality. Innocence and an inherent niceness are the qualities we look for in adults. Also, kids are invariably a part of the concept,” he adds.

Regarding Uthup, he says, “Usha Uthup as a person is contemporary and full of joy, and she has a childlike innocence to her which will never ever fade away. The minute we suggested her name, the client had a big smile and said: ‘She is Paper Boat.’”

‘Stories’ are the core of every promotion that the brand does. “Early this year, as a part of our promotional program, we decided to reprint a classic, Three Men in a Boat by Jerome K Jerome. People were pleasantly surprised and so were we,” says Kakkar.

Having a USP doesn’t lessen the fierce competition in the FMCG sector. Surely Dabur’s Hajmola Yodley poses a direct competition to Paper Boat? To which, Kakkar says, “We feel our real challenge is the distribution and the only way we can compete fairly with our rival brand is by reaching out to as many consumers as possible. We are growing at a very fast pace but the key challenge for us is distribution. We are working very hard to work out the right distribution channels. The ultimate aim is to expand the category and it is always good when the consumer has choice,” he says.

Till now Paper Boat has been adding mainstream flavours such as aam ras, aam panna etc to its mix, but Kakkar shares that the company has plans to bring in regional flavours targeted at a niche consumer base as well. “We plan to get some local gems from smaller towns and bring them closer to our consumers. We are putting an extra effort in the North Eastern region. Recently, we launched Anaar and we are aiming to launch flavors like Neer More, Chilli Guava, Kanji etc. in the next year,” Kakkar informs.

  • Pepperfry gets festive with clutter-breaking Diwali campaign

Pepperfry gets festive with clutter-breaking Diwali campaign

MUMBAI: For one of India’s premier festivals Diwali, Pepperfry has planned an ad campaign with a clutter-breaking message that builds on this Diwali spirit.

The campaign has been conceptualised by L&K Saatchi & Saatchi. The ad builds on the communication that unlike the transactional nature of every day interactions, in this festive season people have an opportunity to reflect on their behaviours and actions and their relationships with others.

Pepperfry used this insight to showcase that people can undertake ‘good actions’ to form an emotional bridge with others.

The coming together of the festive social context along with the individual transformation becomes a powerful catalyst for good action, which is what Pepperfry captures in the message “Iss Diwali Kuch Badal Ke Dekhiye.” The brand associates with the communication as a key enabler of good actions, thereby altering relationships positively.

The TV campaign is live across a bouquet of English infotainment, entertainment, movies, and lifestyle channels, select Hindi HD general entertainment channels (GECs) as well as some regional channels.

The message is also supported by in-cinema advertising across the top seven cities and outdoor in top four markets. It will also be propagated across the digital and social platforms like Google, YouTube and Facebook.

Pepperfry’s earlier campaigns have stressed on rational benefits like quality products and service level standards of free & efficient delivery and assembly along with the other core category triggers. Now, Pepperfry is establishing the emotional benefits of the transformation that its products can bring to people’s lives.

Talking about the TVC, L&K Saatchi and Saatchi executive creative director Kartik Smetacek said, “Diwali seemed like the perfect occasion for pepperfry.com to widen its ambit of communication and own a larger brand idea. That’s where the ‘Iss Diwali, kuch badal ke dekhiye’ campaign was born. The films seek to reinvent the role of furniture, which is not traditionally seen as a gifting item. By design, the stories are subtle and warm, keeping away from the dhoom and dhamaka of typical Diwali advertising, to instead capture the spirit of the festival.”

The storyline is inspired by real life situations that will encourage people to introspect and experience how shift in attitudes and thinking can lead us to make a difference via the ad’s core message.

L&K Saatchi & Saatchi senior vice president Debarjyo Nandi added, “This Diwali, Pepperfry has made a change. And its message is just that, ‘to make a change’ by reaching out to someone and spreading the happiness. In these TVCs we have used furniture as the trigger for this change.”

Pepperfry chief marketing officer Kashyap Vadapalli said, “In the past 18-24 months, brand Pepperfry has grown significantly and established itself as the number one destination for furniture and other home products in the country. We are now in a position to move beyond communicating just the features of a great furniture product or experience to establish Pepperfry as an agent of transformation. We’ve tapped into the Diwali festive spirit to make an appeal to the consumers to: ‘Iss Diwali Kuch Badal Ke Dekhiye.’”

Vadapalli further added, “We really want consumers to make a change and connect with the goodness within themselves, something that they don’t do in their busy daily routines, and then extend that connect to the brand because of the key role it can play in how this life enhancement can be manifested.”

  • Viacom18 packs a punch with ‘Pyaar Ka Punchnama 2’ marketing

Viacom18 packs a punch with ‘Pyaar Ka Punchnama 2’ marketing

MUMBAI: Pyar Ka Punchnama is all set to return with new twist. Viacom18 Motion Pictures has lined up a unique marketing campaign to promote the movie. Kick-starting the teaser with #DilKaJail standees across multiplexes pan India, the studio set the tone for a quirky yet relatable marketing campaign.

Presented by Viacom18 Motion Pictures, Pyaar Ka Punchnama 2 is produced by Abhishek Pathak and directed by Luv Ranjan. The movie will release on 16 October.

Viacom18 Motion Pictures marketing VP Rudrarup Datta said, “Pyaar Ka Punchnama 2 is a cult film that defies the norms of quintessential Bollywood love stories. The film needed a quirky, standout campaign that would connect to the youth and their ideologies of love and relationships and we are delighted with the response we have received thus far.”

An interesting campaign was done by the filmmakers where cinema patrons went behind the bars, jailed by the heart and clicked funky selfies and group pictures. This was facilitated across metros and mini metros. Driving the quirk in the campaign, human banners with the tagline ‘Love is Injurious to Health’ were created and volunteers went and photo-bombed couples at various lover’s points across 10 cities.

Moreover, as the Pyaar Ka Punchnama monologue has gone viral across platforms, in an attempt to extend the idea of the monologue to the common man, an on ground contest activation was conceptualised wherein the most Pyaar mein Pareshaan boy gets a chance to win a trip to Bangkok after a successful recitation of a heated monologue.

Using radio and the digital platform as mediums, this campaign engaged people across the nation. Taking the campaign a notch higher in the release week, a Mohabbat Mukti Morcha was organised where a horde of people assembled in Juhu. From witty one liner hand posters that said Jaanu mujhe jaane do to the burning of a 3ft teddy bear – all the cliché romantic symbols that lead to false expectations in a relationship were protested against. Leading this movement were the lead actors of the film including Kartik Aaryan, Omkar Kapoor and Sunny Singh.
