  • Analytics, tech, automation & digitisation aid Amul quadruple farmers’ income

MUMBAI: The drive towards digital and cashless payments, which received a huge boost following demonetisation has brought about significant benefits to our farmers in rural Gujarat. Amul has actively helped its farmer-members to open bank accounts and have linked an additional 13 lakh farmers’ bank accounts to our system. Now, milk payments are cashless and directly transferred into their bank accounts.

Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation Ltd (GCMMF) vice-chairman Jethabhai Bharwad explained in detail: “Our digitalization drive has brought in complete transparency in payment to milk producer members. Farmer-members are aware of the exact amount due to them and the rationale behind the same. Payments going directly into their bank accounts also helps inculcate the savings habit in them. The need for an active bank account has brought large number of the Amul family farmer households directly into the formal banking network. Automated Milk Collection Systems installed at village dairy cooperative societies have now been linked through common online software applications. This helps to further enhance transparency among producer members using digital technology.”

The chairman Jethabhai Patel added: “The drive towards digital and cashless payments, which received a huge boost thanks to Government of India’s demonetization initiative, has brought about significant benefits to our farmers in rural Gujarat. We have actively helped our farmer-members to open bank accounts and have linked an additional 13 lakh farmers’ bank accounts to our system. Now, milk payments are cashless and directly transferred into their bank accounts.”

GCMMF, which markets the popular Amul brand of milk and dairy products, has successfully quadrupled the income of its dairy farmers in last seven years, demonstrating the efficacy of Amul model in exceeding the national goal of doubling farmer’s income in six years. During the last seven years, Amul’s milk procurement prices to its farmer-members more than doubled from Rs. 24.30 per litre for buffalo milk (Rs. 337 per kg fat) in 2009-10 to Rs. 49 per litre (Rs. 680 per kg fat) in 2016-17. Since the cooperative’s total milk procurement also doubled during this period, from 90.9 lakh litres per day to 176.5 lakh litres per day, this effectively increased the income of its dairy farmers, four-fold in the last seven years.

Turnover of GCMMF has registered quantum growth of 238% in last seven years, which implies an impressive cumulative average growth rate (CAGR) of 19% during this period. The mantra of rapid expansion had yielded rich dividends with the GCMMF’s sales turnover increasing 3.5 times, from Rs. 8,005 crore in 2009-10 to Rs. 27,043 crore in 2016-17. Results of the apex body of dairy cooperatives in Gujarat were declared on 15 June 2017.

GCMMF managing director R S Sodhi emphasised that Amul’s success has been driven by its ‘3E’mantra – Rapid expansion in milk procurement, rapid expansion in manufacturing facilities and rapid expansion in marketing & distribution network.

“This year, we leveraged heavily on our technological capabilities and data analytics to enhance communication with our channel partners and expand our distribution reach”. “Product innovation has always been part of our DNA and has inspired us to launch more than 50 new products in the market during the last three years,” Sodhi added.

  • Most Jio recharges were digital & traditional spend was above average, says Vishal Sampat

MUMBAI: Reliance Jio’s launch in India caused a stir in the telecommunication industry. Since then, it’s been a fight between all the telecom players. When Jio launched with free call and text messages, and five times cheaper than others data, it disrupted the industry indeed.

To decode the journey of Brand Jio, its chief digital officer Vishal Sampat was in conversation with WATConsult CEO Rajiv Dingra at IAMAI 13th Marketing conclave in Mumbai. Speaking about the digital versus traditional marketing spend ratio, Sampat said, “A majority of recharges came from the digital channels and the traditional spend above telecom average.”

So, what is Brand Jio and what does it stand for? Jio stands for so much more than a telecom company, and it’s the world’s largest startup. “From the business perspective, we have been building a pipe that enables billions of Indians to be online, get access to information that they did not get at the right rate,” Sampat said.

“We are creating an ecosystem with our apps which not only allows consumers to come online, but experience so much more. We envision Jio as a way of life when it comes to people’s digital life,” he said.

About the biggest challenge as Brand Jio moving from a service which was largely free to now paid, Sampat said: “Even after stopping being service, we still had a majority of users and we still are a hundred million plus — with subscribers who paid us for Jio Summer Surprise and Jio Dhan Dhana Dhan. People are using our network constantly. Our data rates are the best in the industry. For paid Jio, consumers expect from us a certain level of customer experience. Despite the challenges, we successfully moved people from free to pay.”

One great thing which actually worked for the brand is King Khan, who is the brand ambassador.

“The market was dominated by three large players, and we planned to disrupt that market. From the marketing perspective, we had to be ready with various options — one of which was choosing the perfect brand ambassador. Shah Rukh Khan’s persona resonated with Jio,” Sampat said.

“With our best quality service and SRK’s help, we could clearly show to the world that there was an appetite for data. Then, we changed our strategy from the new launch campaign to a product-based campaign. I think product base campaign is the right way to go,” Sampat said.

Jio started building the brand on two points — one was the Net speed, and other was data. “You constantly challenged the market with these. They are challenging Jio with aggressive speed and downloads. Do you think you have to come up with a better promise,” Dingra asked.

Sampat said that speed and downloads were the most talked about aspects. “The fact is that the 90 per cent mobile broadband data is carried by Jio in India. A majority of people are using our sim for data. People who claim that they are the fastest network need to cross-check with TRAI. On the regulator’s website, a home-test in the last four months will reveal that Jio apps have been download faster than others. We are also the only pan-India 4G providers,” he added.

  • Body Shop launches ‘Forever Against Animal Testing’ campaign

MUMBAI: The Body Shop recently launched a new campaign for a global ban on cosmetics animal testing on products and ingredients by 2020, revolutionizing the beauty industry and protecting millions of animals around the world. Partnering with the leading non – profit organization working to end animal testing, Cruelty Free International, The Body Shop will take the campaign to the highest authority, the United Nations, and request an international convention banning cosmetics testing on animals.

The potential for animal testing is still a huge risk around the world, with over 80% of countries still having no laws against testing in cosmetics. Despite the fact that most countries do not require safety data based on animal tests and reliable alternatives are available and that beauty companies like The Body Shop use innovative and effective cruelty–free ingredients in their products. Cruelty Free International estimates that approximately 500,000 animals are still used in some countries in cosmetics testing every year.

Speaking on the campaign, Jacqueline Fernandez, Brand Ambassador of The Body Shop India says, “Real beauty cannot be achieved at the cost of harming anyone especially animals. The concept of animal testing for cosmetic brands should be banned. A socially responsible conglomerate would prefer not to implement testing measures that prove hazardous to anyone’s health. That’s why I extend support to The Body Shop’s noble initiative to end this atrocious practice across this industry by launching a campaign to spread a global ban on animal testing of cosmetic products and ingredients. I request you all to sign the petition and save our animals.”

Shriti Malhotra, COO, The Body Shop India says, “We are pleased to say that India was the first country in South Asia to ban Animal Testing in 2013. The Body Shop is proud to be a cruelty free brand and a staunch supporter of effective, modern, non-animal alternatives to cosmetic animal testing. With our’ Forever Against Animal Testing’ (FAAT) campaign we are asking our customers to help us end the unnecessary and out-dated practice of animal testing for good by signing the petition in our stores or on our website.”

Rules on animal testing in cosmetics are currently patchwork, with legislation differing around the world leaving consumers ill informed. Traditional animal tests have never been validated for their use in reliably detecting the safety of cosmetic products and ingredients. There are now modern alternatives such as artificially grown human skin, that are, in the majority of cases, as effective as the animal test they replace and have been validated by authorities.

Jessie Macneil – Brown, Senior Manager International Campaigns and Corporate Responsibility, The Body Shop, says: “The Body Shop passionately believes that no animal should be harmed in the name of cosmetics and that animal testing on products and ingredients is outdated, cruel and unnecessary. This is why The Body Shop and Cruelty Free International have partnered to deliver the largest and most ambitious campaign ever to seek a global ban on the use of animals to test cosmetic products and ingredients.

“This campaign will finish what we both started back in the 1980s. We are calling on at least 8 million people from every corner of the globe who care about animal welfare to join our cause and sign our petition. We will take this petition to the United Nations to compel them to create a global law a ban animal testing in cosmetic products and ingredients. With an international law enforced, consumers would finally be confident that any cosmetics they buy are cruelty free. It’s time to end animal testing for cosmetics purposes once and for all. Join us to make it happen.”

Michelle Thew, CEO of Cruelty Free International says: “People are confused about animal testing. The world over, people want this cruel practice to end, yet existing laws are a patchwork of different rules with some very big gaps. While more and more countries require non-animal safety tests and many have taken steps to prohibit cosmetics testing on animals, there is more work to be done. Where animal testing is allowed – on both products and ingredients – most countries do not require testing data to be made available to the public or even to regulators. This makes it extremely difficult to know how widespread animal testing is. What we know is that one single test may involve hundreds of animals. If just one company or one country relies on animal testing, the impact on animal lives could be huge. Because 80% of countries around the world still allow animal testing for cosmetics, a global ban is the only way to truly eliminate animal suffering. We are delighted Cruelty Free International and The Body Shop are together campaigning for a ban that would finally end animal testing forever.”

The Body Shop and Cruelty Free International’s new campaign is calling for an international ban on animal testing in cosmetics, on both products and ingredients, everywhere and forever. It is the most ambitious campaign ever against animal testing, and aims to engage eight million people to sign the petition calling on the United Nations to introduce an international convention to end the practice once and for all. The petition can be signed online or at any of The Body Shop’s 3,000 stores across the world. Consumers are being encouraged to use the campaign hashtag, #ForeverAgainstAnimalTesting, on social media to raise awareness of the issue.
