  • EU nations cooperate to take down pirate global streaming service

EU nations cooperate to take down pirate global streaming service

MUMBAI: What does it take shut a global  illegal streaming service originating somewhere in Europe?

Try this for size: The European Union Agency for Criminal Justice Cooperation  (Eurojust ). The European Union Agency for Law Enforcement Cooperation (Europol). The Audiovisual Anti-Piracy Alliance (AAPA). Italian, Croatian, Romanian, Swedish, Swiss, Dutch, Chinese  and the UK authorities.

    Quite a handful, right?

Well, they all worked down together late November  to take down one of the world’s largest illegal streaming services, according to a  press release issued by Eurojust.  In a large-scale operation, over 100 searches were carried out against 102 suspects. Eleven suspects were arrested in Croatia.

The suspects illegally distributed material from streaming services online, including films and series. They also pirated more than 2,500 television channels, mainly sports. The illegal service served more than 22 million users worldwide. They were able to make over Euros 250 million in illegal profits per month. The economic damages to the copyright holders of the material is estimated at Euro10 billion.

To evade authorities, the suspects allegedly used encrypted messaging services to communicate and false identities to register phone numbers, credit cards, server rentals and TV subscriptions.

On 26 November, during an international operation, the servers hosting the illegal streaming were seized and shut down, disrupting the services.

Collaboration between authorities was set up at Eurojust to effectively pull the plug on the illegal streamer. Coordination meetings at Eurojust’s headquarters allowed authorities from Italy, Croatia, the Netherlands, Romania, Sweden, Switzerland and the UK  to work together on the investigation and plan the operation to shut down the service and arrest the suspects. Europol supported the operation by deploying experts and analysing the available intelligence during the investigation phase.

The cooperation between the authorities culminated in a joint operation to take down the services on 26 November. The operation  involved over 270 officers from the Polizia Postale carrying out 89 property searches in 15 Italian regions. An additional 14 searches were conducted by law enforcement agencies abroad, including five addresses in the UK, and further searches and seizures in the Netherlands, Sweden, Switzerland, Romania, France, Bulgaria, Germany and Croatia,  according to the AAPA.

During  the searches in Italy, the Netherlands, Sweden, Switzerland, Romania, Croatia, the UK  and China, over Euros 1.6 million in cryptocurrency and Euros 40,000 in cash was seized. Croatian police arrested 11 suspects. AAPA said that “the immediately seized proceeds represent only a fraction of an illegal business that is alleged to yield approximately Euros 3 billion per annum.”

The operation was massive as can be ascertained from the results achieved:  102 suspects were identified  with the arrest of 11 people after searching 112 houses. 100 domains were blocked with 29 servers being taken away along with 27 different IPTV equipment and devices. During the searches 560 resellers names were discovered along with an assortment of drugs and weapons.

AAPA co-president Mark Mulready said: “We applaud the efforts of the Catania public prosecutor’s office, the Croatian state attorney office for suppression of corruption and organised crime, Europol, Eurojust, and all of the law enforcement agencies involved in these operations. The scale of these multi-jurisdictional law enforcement actions highlights the considerable challenge our industry faces when dealing with such sophisticated international pirate networks.

“We are proud to have collaborated with our law enforcement partners to provide technical training and in-field support to assist them in successfully tackling the world’s largest pirate network.   We are very grateful to the AAPA members who supported this action day, including Premier League, Sky Group, Nagravision, Deutsche Fußball Liga (DFL), beIN Sports, United Media, Friend MTS and Irdeto.  We will continue to closely collaborate with law enforcement agencies in Europe and beyond to enable them to successfully identify, investigate and prosecute large-scale cross-border pirate networks.”

The authorities involved in the actions were:

    * Italy: Public Prosecution Office Catania
    * Croatia: The Office for the Suppression of Corruption and Organised Crime
    * Netherlands: Fiscal Information and Investigation Service; Public Prosecution Service Rotterdam
    * Romania: Directorate for Investigating Organized Crime and Terrorism; Direction for Fighting Organized Crime – Cyber Crime Fighting Service
    * Sweden: National unit against organized crime at the Swedish Prosecution Authority; Swedish Police Authority
    * Switzerland: Office of the Attorney General of Switzerland; Federal Office of Police
    * United Kingdom: City of London Police

  • SonyLiv’s & Indian Magic Eye’s Lampan triumphs at IFFI 2024

SonyLiv’s & Indian Magic Eye’s Lampan triumphs at IFFI 2024

MUMBAI: There were five of them in contention, but Marathi series Lampan finally bagged the best OTT series award (we at Indiantelevision.com refuse to use the term web series for reasons best known to all) at the International Film Festival of India in Goa on 28 November 2024. • Digital content creators and their reliance on fictional facts

Digital content creators and their reliance on fictional facts

MUMBAI: We have known it for a long time. And many have cautioned us about it as well.

Now here’s some data to support the fact that digital content influencers and creators are pretty inventive about the so-called information that they tout as facts.

A Unesco backed  Behind the Scenes survey  has revealed that 62 per cent of influencers do not carry out rigorous and systematic fact-checking of information prior to sharing it.  However,  73 per cent expressed the desire to be trained to do so.

The survey is the first global analysis of digital content creators’ motivations and practices, and of the challenges they face. It involved 500 influencers in 45 countries, with the expertise of a dedicated research team at US-based Bowling Green State University.

The survey found that content creators have difficulty determining the best criteria for assessing the credibility of information they find online. 42 per cent of respondents said they used “the number of ‘likes’ and ‘shares’ a post had received” on social media as the main indicator. 21 per cent were happy to share content with their audiences if it had been shared with them “by friends they trusted,” and 19 per cent said they relied “on the reputation” of the original author or publisher of content.

Here’s more: mainstream news media is only the third most common source (36.9 per cent) for content creators, after their own experience and their own research and interviews.

Clearly, a lot needs to be done to train digital content creators as well as followers who swallow any drivel  that’s dished out to them as a fact. Unesco has launched an online course to address this and educate them. More than 9,000 participants from 160 countries already registered to participate.

    They will learn how to:
    * source information using a diverse range of sources
    * assess and verify the quality of information
    * be transparent about the sources which inspire their content
    * identify, debunk and report misinformation, disinformation and hate speech
    * collaborate with journalists and traditional media to amplify fact-based information.

  • High Stakes and High Drama: The Portrayal of Gambling in Indian TV Shows and Movies

High Stakes and High Drama: The Portrayal of Gambling in Indian TV Shows and Movies

Gambling has always held a place of intrigue and excitement in popular culture. In Indian television and cinema, this fascination is evident through numerous depictions that range from high-stakes drama to moral cautionary tales. This article delves into how gambling is portrayed in Indian TV shows and movies, exploring its cultural impact and underlying themes.

The Glitz and Glamour of Gambling

Indian cinema has a long history of showcasing the allure of gambling. Classic films like “Shree 420” and “Jewel Thief” introduced audiences to the thrill of high-stakes games. More contemporary movies such as “Teen Patti” and “The Great Gambler” continue this tradition, depicting gambling as an activity filled with suspense and excitement. These films often glamorize the world of gambling, presenting it as a domain of the rich and daring. This is akin to the allure of a high limit online casino, where the stakes are higher, and the rewards are greater.

    Gambling as a Plot Device

Gambling serves as a compelling plot device in many Indian TV shows and movies, creating tension and driving the narrative forward. In “Baazigar,” for example, the protagonist’s gambling prowess is central to his quest for revenge. Similarly, TV shows like “Kumkum Bhagya” use gambling to introduce twists and turns, keeping viewers on the edge of their seats.

In addition to mainstream movies and TV shows, regional cinema has also explored gambling themes. Films like “Soodhu Kavvum” in Tamil and “Anjaneyulu” in Telugu highlight gambling’s role in both plot development and character arcs. These stories illustrate how deeply ingrained gambling is in the cultural and entertainment fabric of India.

    The Moral Quandary

While gambling is often depicted with glamour, Indian media also addresses its darker side. Movies like “Gambler” and “Oye Lucky! Lucky Oye!” highlight the moral and ethical dilemmas associated with gambling. These stories often serve as cautionary tales, illustrating the potential for addiction and the impact on personal relationships. They reflect societal concerns about gambling’s influence and the consequences of indulgence.

Television series also explore these moral complexities. Shows like “Crime Patrol” and “Savdhaan India” frequently feature episodes where gambling leads to criminal activities and personal downfalls. These narratives underscore the risks involved and serve as a reminder of the potential negative outcomes associated with gambling.

    Cultural Reflections

The portrayal of gambling in Indian media is a reflection of broader cultural attitudes. On one hand, it represents aspiration and the desire for quick success. On the other, it acknowledges the risks and moral complexities involved. This duality resonates with audiences, offering both escapism and a mirror to societal issues.
Moreover, gambling in Indian media often intersects with themes of power, wealth, and status. Characters involved in gambling are frequently depicted as affluent or striving for wealth, reflecting societal aspirations. This intersection adds another layer of complexity to the portrayal of gambling, making it a rich and multifaceted subject.

    Technological Influence

The advent of digital platforms has also influenced the portrayal of gambling in Indian media. Online gambling and high limit online casinos are becoming increasingly popular, and this trend is reflected in newer films and TV shows. For instance, movies like “Rummy” and web series like “The Casino” explore the world of online gambling, highlighting its growing significance in modern entertainment.

These digital narratives often emphasize the convenience and accessibility of online gambling, appealing to a younger, tech-savvy audience. This shift in portrayal indicates a broader trend in the entertainment industry, where digital platforms are increasingly shaping content and themes.

  • Australia passes bill banning social media for kids; India’s Vaishnaw calls for stricter regulation

Australia passes bill banning social media for kids; India’s Vaishnaw calls for stricter regulation

MUMBAI: No social media for kids. The Aussie house of representatives passed a bill yesterday imposing a ban against Instagram, Tiktok, Facebook, SnapChat, X,  Reddit from allowing kids under 16 from accessing these networking platforms. The onus has been put on social media to ensure that kids don’t use them;  fines up to $33 million will be imposed on them if a kid’s profile is found active. The bill will now require senate approval which it most likely will get and social media  will have  a year to clean up their acts.

    That was Down Under.

In India too, the government would like to bring  social media under tight regulation.

While addressing a parliament question during the ongoing session of the Lok Sabha today, union minister of information & broadcasting, railways, and electronics & IT, Ashwini Vaishnaw,  once again highlighted the urgent need to strengthen existing laws governing social media and OTT platforms.

“We are living in the era of social media and OTT platforms. However, the democratic institutions and traditional forms of the press that once relied on editorial checks to ensure accountability and correctness of content, have seen these checks diminish over time,” he said.

He noted that due to the absence of such editorial oversight, social media has become a platform for freedom of press on one hand, but on the other hand, it has also become a space for uncontrolled expression, which often includes vulgar content.

Acknowledging the distinct cultural differences between India and the geographies where these platforms originated, Vaishnaw emphasised. “The cultural sensitivities of India vastly differ from those of the regions where these platforms were created,” he said.

This makes it imperative for India to make existing laws more stricter and he urged everyone to come to a consensus on this matter.

The minister also urged the parliamentary standing committee to take up this important matter issue as a priority. “There should be societal consensus on it, along with stricter laws to address this challenge” he said.

    Will Indian society agree?
