Emerging cities like Jaipur, Lucknow, Surat and Pune also ranked in Pocket FM’s top 10 Indian cities for 2023.

31.4 per cent of consumption occurred during leisure time (9 pm – 6 am). Morning (6-9 am) and evening (6-9 pm) hours saw 25.2 per cent consumption. However, the maximum spike was witnessed during productive hours (9 am – 6 pm) with 43.4 per cent consumption. This pattern reiterates the role of audio entertainment doubling up as a mental wellness support, helping to reduce stress and distraction while it increasing attention and focus. An almost equal gender representation was seen, with males constituting 55 per cent of the audience. Gen Z holds the majority at 39 per cent, followed by millennials at 30 per cent and GenX at 21 per cent.

In 2023, the top genres were drama, romance, and Sci-Fi & fantasy. males showed a preference for drama series, while females exhibited greater interest in Romance. Surprisingly, both genders demonstrated equal excitement for Sci-Fi and fantasy series consumption.

Audio Blockbusters are now a reality. Insta Millionaire exceeds Rs.100 crores revenue collection.

17 audio series surpassed 100 million plays, while 40 titles exceeded 50 million plays. In terms of revenue, 13 audio series surpassed the Rs.10 crore mark, and 25 series achieved Rs.5 crore in collections. Insta Millionaire turned out to be a mega-blockbuster with Rs.100 crore revenue collections.

The standout shows of the year, ‘Insta Millionaire,’ ‘Ek Ladki Ko Dekha To,’ and ‘Devil Se Shaadi,’ emerged as the biggest hits, leading in both playtime and revenue collection in India.

Encouraged by this trend, Pocket FM co-founder and CEO Rohan Nayak said, “This year, audio series as a category has surged in popularity, firmly establishing as a mainstream entertainment choice. We have emerged as a leading entertainment destination, boasting an average daily time spent of over 115 minutes and witnessing 24×7 entertainment consumption throughout the day. This year our blockbuster series Insta Millionaire has crossed Rs.100 crores in revenue, possibly the first entertainment title in audio to achieve this landmark. We predict this trend to get stronger, with audio series rising to prominence among the top three forms of entertainment, inspiring and complementing the storytelling in movies, web series, and TV.”

JioCinema reboots for another big digital innings with advertisers for IPL 2024

Mumbai: Rebooting for a new season of IPL, JioCinema hosted a roadshow event for advertisers and partners that brought the power and potential of live sports on digital back into focus, and showcased the expanse of the platform’s offerings in the coming season. The event witnessed participation from some of India’s advertisers who discussed India’s paradigm shift towards digital and its implications on advertising in live sports.

JioCinema anchor Anant Tyagi helped unfold an engaging session with brands such as Blackberrys and Mobikwik who shared a first-hand account of the transformative impact that IPL on JioCinema had on their respective businesses last season. The event also opened up conversations on the sharp rise in the adoption of Connected TV over the past year and how brands are making the most of it. Participants at the roadshow discussed how cricket on streaming platforms transcends demographics and enables unprecedented scale, thus making it sharper and more effective than traditional genres.

  • News9 Plus’ investigative documentaries expose online scams

News9 Plus’ investigative documentaries expose online scams

Mumbai: As part of its year-end programming, News9 Live presents ‘Devil in my Phone’, a special series featuring investigative stories of News9 Plus journalists Gulam Jeelani and Shantasree Sarkar, who uncover the dark truths behind the menace of online sextortion and cybercrime rackets.

‘Devil in my Phone’ is available on News9 Plus, the world’s first news OTT, and is a brutal and unflinching look at the dark underbelly of the internet in India. Featuring two episodes – ‘Sextortion’ and ‘Hackers for Hire’, it explores the reasons behind the rise in this insidious new-age financial fraud, and the response by victims and law enforcement.

In ‘Hackers for Hire’, Shantasree Sarkar interviews online financial fraud victims, police officials and a real-life black hat hacker. Starting with the seemingly innocuous origins of these crimes – a SIM card, a smartphone and basic training, the documentary uncovers the full extent of the damage, to the tune of a shocking Rs 239 crore from the state of Rajasthan alone.

Casting much-need light on the other dark corner of this phenomenon, Gulam Jeelani takes a close look at the sinister mechanisms employed by ‘Sextortion’ scamsters, including the use of pornography, fake videos and the threat of social exposure, to defraud unsuspecting victims of lakhs of rupees. While law enforcement struggles to react in time, victims of sextortion are often driven to bankruptcy or suicide, fearing the social repercussions of public knowledge about the incident.

Both documentaries converge on one bizarre but indisputable fact: more than half of all reported cyber-crimes in India originate from the Mewat region, near the national capital Delhi. Speaking for the episode ‘Hackers for Hire’, Ravi Prakash Meharda, the Director General of Police, Cyber Crime in Rajasthan breaks down the moving parts of this well-oiled machine, from the sourcing of SIM cards from across the country, to the advantageous natural topography of the region, and finally to the installation and use of ATMs in the villages where cyber criminals use their ill-gotten gains for personal ends.

Perhaps the most shocking aspect that ‘Devil in my Phone’ lays bare is that even law enforcement officials are not safe. Amit Dubey, a cyber security expert and the head of Product Security at Dream11, recounts in the episode ‘Sextortion’ how over 150 law enforcement officers in UP have been victims of sextortion in the last year alone.

In fine detail, the two episodes of ‘Devil in my Phone’ unearth the facts to put in focus a worrisome picture – there are over 2000 cyber-crime complaints lodged in India on a daily basis, with 42% of Indians having fallen prey to such crimes in the last three years. In sextortion cases, fewer than one percent of incidents are actually reported, due to the social stigma it carries.

Featuring appearances from Deputy Commissioner of Delhi Police Prashant Gautam, cyber psychologist and V4WEB director Nirali Bhatia, cyberlaw expert Karnika Seth and Nuh Superintendent of Police Varun Singla, among others, ‘Devil in my Phone’ brings to the fore a pressing issue at a time when India’s internet-using population is at the highest it has ever been, with a steady uptick in the number of users expected in coming years.

Both episodes of ‘Devil in my Phone’ were also broadcast on News9 Live, the 24×7 live streaming platform that represents TV9 Network’s connected-TV offering as part of the News9 Mediaverse.

  • Vishvas.news launches ‘Sach Ke Sathi Seniors’ against online misinformation

Vishvas.news launches ‘Sach Ke Sathi Seniors’ against online misinformation

Mumbai: Jagran New Media’s internationally awarded and trusted fact-checking wing, Vishvasnews.com, launches “Sach Ke Sathi: Seniors”, a media literacy campaign to help senior citizens learn how to detect online misinformation, protect themselves from deepfakes and access trustworthy news and information.

SKS Seniors – the seventh edition of Jagran New Media’s flagship media literacy effort Sach Ke Sathi – has been launched by Vishvasnews.com in collaboration with MICA as its Academic Partner, and is supported by the Google News Initiative. Two other fact-checkers – Fact Crescendo, and News Meter have also joined hands with SKS Seniors as its language partners to take the initiative forward in local languages. The campaign focuses on imparting media literacy training to senior citizens, who are more vulnerable to false information and aims to impart skills to better navigate the digital information landscape.

SKS Seniors will go live in 50 cities, covering 15 states in seven languages and will host 70 training sessions – 40 on-ground and 30 online. In addition to this, SKS will also launch a first-of-its-kind micro-learning video course on media literacy and promote media literacy through its print editions.

Commenting on the launch, Jagran New Media CEO Bharat Gupta said, “The collaboration between Vishvasnews.com, Google News Initiative (GNI), the fact-checking community, and MICA fulfils our objective to address the critical issue of media literacy specifically within the senior demographic, with a focus on digital safety and fact-checking. Built upon shared synergy, the 7th edition of Sach ke Sathi will enable us to collectively prioritize the advancement of media literacy among seniors and create a robust foundation for a digitally literate society. It has been our endeavour at Jagran New Media to follow the principles of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) that underline our dedication to this important cause.”

The main focus is on providing senior citizens with essential tools and knowledge for awareness of digital safety and misinformation/disinformation through various training done by the fact-checking community and our academic partner, MICA. A well-devised communication and outreach plan has been implemented to ensure that the programme effectively reaches its intended audience, with a range of measurement approaches to assess the programme’s impact at various stages.”

We are proud to support this collaborative initiative that will help participants better assess the credibility of information available online.”
