  • Audible Original adaptation of George Orwell’s 1984 starring Andrew Garfield & others, out now

Audible Original adaptation of George Orwell’s 1984 starring Andrew Garfield & others, out now

Mumbai: Audible, a leading provider of spoken word entertainment, has launched its new audio thriller based on George Orwell’s dystopian masterpiece 1984, featuring an all-star cast.

Oscar nominated, and Golden Globe and Tony award winning actor, Andrew Garfield leads the adaptation as Winston alongside Grammy, Emmy and Tony award winning, Oscar nominated actor Cynthia Erivo as Julia.

BAFTA and Olivier award winning Andrew Scott plays the alluring, mysterious and dangerous O’Brien, while Oscar nominated actor Tom Hardy voices the infamous Big Brother.

The cast also features Romesh Ranganathan as Parsons, Natasia Demetriou as Mrs Parsons, Chukwudi Iwuji as Charrington, Francesca Mills as Syme, Katie Leung as Ling, Alex Lawther as Ampleforth alongside a full ensemble.

Andrew Garfield, playing Winston in Audible’s 1984 said: “I’m very grateful to Audible to be a part of this new incarnation of Orwell’s radical, political classic, 1984. A classic that, disappointingly, humanity seems to need to be constantly engaged with. To keep ourselves awake and remembering that we each have a soul. And that that soul is full of beauty and value. And how vital it is for each of us to resist the forces that wish to subdue and strangle that collective soul. The cast and crew is clearly the best of the best of British and Irish talent. It was truly a joy to tell this story for an audience hungry for their own liberation.”

Cynthia Erivo, playing Julia said: “It has been a truly wonderful experience getting the chance to share my interpretation of the incomparable Julia. Her wit, grit and determination, her passion for life and her want to LIVE has been a delight to play, this adaptation has allowed all of the beautiful qualities she has, to shine bright and it has been a pleasure to have been able to work with such wonderful artists. I think we have created something quite special together.”

Transporting listeners into the dystopian world of 1984, Matthew Bellamy, Muse’s songwriter, guitarist and frontman, and award-winning composer Ilan Eshkeri have created an original score performed by London Metropolitan Orchestra at Abbey Road studios. The production is underpinned by a visceral, haunting soundscape, and mixed in Dolby Atmos.

Matthew Bellamy and Ilan Eshkeri, co-creators of 1984’s soundtrack jointly shared: “The music we created is more than a soundtrack; it’s a haunting echo of a future that Orwell warned us about and a reflection of our current societal trajectories. It stands as a poignant, musical testament to the enduring power of art to mirror, and challenge, the world we live in.”

Directed by BAFTA award winning Destiny Ekaragha, this Audible Original adaptation, penned by Olivier Award nominated writer Joe White stays faithful to the original text, leaning into the horror of the dystopian setting, whilst going deeper into Winston and Julia’s love story. In a world where love and sex are forbidden, Winston and Julia are the last lovers on earth.

The adaptation has been officially authorised and endorsed by the Orwell Estate with Richard Blair, George Orwell’s son, calling it “sensational” with a “brilliant cast”.

George Orwell’s 1984, an Audible Original, releases globally on 4 April, exactly 40 years after the date of Winston’s first diary entry.

Available now exclusively on Audible here. Audible membership may be required.

  • Five reasons why you should watch ‘Family Aaj Kal’

Five reasons why you should watch ‘Family Aaj Kal’

Mumbai: Remember the first time you wanted to introduce your partner to your parents? It can be the most nerve-wracking thing to do! And even if you feel your family is quite modern or open-minded, how quickly would that approach go out the window if they found out that the love of your life is a cab driver?!

The latest dramedy by Civic Studios, “Family Aaj Kal,” explores a similar dilemma faced by Meher, a 20-something girl who decides to introduce her boyfriend, Gaurav, who is also a cab driver, to her family. A hilarious yet relatable portrayal of the generation gaps in every family, and a mirror to the class biases that any progressive middle-class family can fall victim to, “Family Aaj Kal” explores the quirky, wholesome world of the Kashyaps.

Created by producer and Civic Studios founder Anushka Shah, along with director Parikshit Joshi and writer Manoj Kalwani, the five-episode show is streaming now on Sony LIV. Here are five reasons why you should watch this sweet dramedy with a big heart!

Modern love with aaj kal ki family: What counts as modern love in today’s time? Meher’s parents have survived an interfaith marriage against their family’s wishes. So they’re sure they won’t let their children go through the same, like their ‘gaye-guzre’ elders. But when Meher falls in love with someone who is considered to be from a different class background, her family can’t see eye to eye due to their own concerns for their daughter’s future. Who will win in this battle of love vs class bias?

Stellar ensemble cast led by Apoorva Arora: Fans of Apoorva Arora will be excited to see her in a brand new avatar for this family dramedy. After hit youth shows like College Romance and Firsts, her character Meher will strike a relatable chord in all youngsters caught between independence and family. She is joined by the extremely talented Sonali Sachdev as her mother. The entire cast was privileged to share screen with the late Nitesh Pandey as her father. Both parents light up the screen with their comic timing. Not to mention, fresh faces Prakhar Singh and Aakarshan Singh, and veteran Masood Akhtar.

Dignity in every job: If we were to take a step back and notice, we would find a general distaste for blue-collar jobs among our friends and families. “Family Aaj Kal” takes a mirror to society to extend empathy, respect and dignity to professions like drivers. It also sheds a light to the struggles of Indian youth who, like Gaurav, Meher’s boyfriend, have graduated with esteemed degrees only to either be unemployed or work in a job where they’re overqualified.

Beyond fairy tales: Usually, most movies end with people from two religions fighting against all odds to get married. But what happens when they are settled into their lives? We rarely ever see the happily-ever-after or just the regular lives of these couples. To see what her parents Faiza and Shekhar Kashyap have built for themselves is not only heartwarming but also gives hope for the future!

Bridging the generation gap: Parents and children often have differing opinions on relationships, marriage, class, and everything in between. The journey of the Kashyaps is sweet, wholesome one where they figure how to bridge of these gaps with thoda empathy, forgiveness and acceptance by both sides!

So don’t forget to tune into ‘Family Aaj Kal’, live on Sony LIV from 3 April onwards!

Explore Dimple Jangda’s audiobook “Heal Your Gut, Mind & Emotions” on Audible

Mumbai: This World Health Day, let us all take a moment to check in with our bodies and assess our mental well-being. To honour this significant occasion, tune into Dimple Jangda’s audiobook, Heal Your Gut, Mind & Emotions on Audible, where she unravels the intricate connections between diet, emotions, and physical health, offering her valuable insights and tips. In this audiobook, Dimple guides listeners on their well-being journey as she explores the impact of mindful eating, positive emotions, and the release of negative memories on our overall health. Here are five actionable tips that will help you keep your health in check on Audible!

Combat Sinusitis Woes by Trying These Home Remedies

Dimple Jangda, in her audiobook, discusses how sinusitis impacts overall well-being and functioning. She shares a few practical methods that one must consider implementing to treat it comfortably within the presence of one’s home. She shares the following remedies for a natural recovery –

Try steam inhalation with a few drops of eucalyptus oil for its anti-inflammatory properties. It eases breathing and also reduces cold sores, blood pressure, blood sugar and fever symptoms.

You can take 3-4 teaspoons of ajwain, and carom seeds, dry roast them on a pan and place them inside a small handkerchief. Inhale it slowly through both nostrils. This helps release the pressure and inflation in the sinus areas.

You can also massage your temple to reduce the pressure on your sinuses.

Another remedy is to boil ginger with some mint leaves in a glass of water and sip it when it is warm. For sneezing woes, take black peppercorns, and chew on them slowly. This helps kill the bacteria in the mouth and bronchi region.

Incorporate jal neti yoga into your routine by flushing the sinus passages with warm water and salt through one nostril and letting it flow out through the other nostril. After this, always remember to gargle with warm water, turmeric and salt to prevent parasites from irritating the throat.

Bid adieu to unhealthy foods for improved gut health

Dimple emphasises the vital role of gut health in our overall well-being, underscoring the impact of dietary choices on maintaining a healthy gut. She provides insights on food choices one must make or avoid for healthy gut health.

    •    When we eat a simple home-cooked meal that is made with fresh ingredients and lovingly prepared by our grandparents, parents, partners or even ourselves, we naturally feel satiated and happy due to serotonin released in the gut. On the other hand, when we eat reheated, packaged foods that have preservatives, the feeling isn’t the same. The gut often responds to the quality of ingredients and cooking methods.
    •    Refined sugar is dangerous as it has the same impact on your brain as that of hard drugs and acts as fuel for bad bacteria.
    •    Refined oils, refined salt, packaged foods, deep-fried foods and carbonated drinks, all of these are so finely processed that they cause holes in the gut and leak into the bloodstream, causing inflammation and chronic health issues.
    •    Refined flour used in pizza, burgers, breads, and pasta is the most inedible food. It turns into a sticky glue-like substance and gets stuck to the gut lining for days and weeks together. Other food particles begin to stick to this glue-like substance which becomes a breeding ground for bad bacteria to multiply uncontrollably. When bad bacteria multiply your mental health also gets impacted.

Aid your mental well-being by avoiding tamasic foods

To keep our emotions in check, Dimple sheds light on the importance of mental well-being by discussing tamasic and sattvik foods. Tamasic foods are those foods which have the potential to harm physical and mental health, while sattvik foods entail nutrient-rich plant-based options and minimally processed foods that promote well-being.

    •    Tamas is a state of ignorance, inertia and laziness. It is responsible for negative emotions like anger, attachment, depression, dependency, self-doubt, guilt, boredom, irritation, addiction, apathy, confusion, grief and ignorance. Foods that contribute to tamas include meat, fish, eggs, poultry, stale food, packaged food with a lot of chemical additives, reheated food, alcohol, cigarettes, and addictive drugs.
    •    A sattvik diet includes foods that are rich in nutrients such as fresh fruits, vegetables, juices, whole wheat bread, pulses, grains, sprouts, nuts, seeds, herbs, honey and cruelty-free dairy products. These foods increase your state of awareness and consciousness, inspire positivity and also help unleash your inner potential.
    •    Sometimes, even sattvik foods can turn tamasic when they are old, reheated or deep-fried. These foods do nothing to uplift your energy and take you down to a state of inertia, heaviness, gluttony, lethargy, or aggression. One must avoid late-night meals as they are tamasic in nature.

Enhance digestive health for overall well-being

Achieving a healthy lifestyle through proper dietary habits may appear daunting, but in the audiobook, Dimple breaks this down in a simple manner. From eating raw fruits to drinking soups, she provides actionable tips essential for enhancing digestive and gut health, guiding us towards holistic well-being. She says,

    •    Eat only when you’re hungry otherwise, the food sits in the gut for hours leading to indigestion.
    •    Eat until you’re 80 per cent full, your stomach is the size of your fist, so eat until you’re 80 per cent full, and then there will be room for the digestive juices and stomach acids to work.
    •    You must chew your food until it turns into liquid. Chewing creates saliva which aids in the digestion process, do not make a smoothie of all your foods as that eliminates the chewing process and stresses the stomach.
    •    Instead of fruit juices, have raw fruits and instead of smoothies, have warm well-cooked soups with spices that stimulate the metabolic fire and aid the digestion process.
    •    Eat your liquids which means sitting down while drinking water.
    •    Remember, the gut is communicating with the brain, so if you are distracted when you’re eating with a mobile phone or television, the brain struggles to focus on digestion which can lead to bloating, overeating, acidity and indigestion.

Make room for positivity by letting go of negative emotions to avoid diseases

Did you know that your uterus stores memories? Dimple encourages everyone to maintain a positive outlook in life and release any negative emotions as they can impact one’s physical well-being. She advises the following to get rid of these emotions –

    •    When we hold negative emotions and unresolved childhood trauma, grudges, worry and pain, it gets stored in different parts of the body like the hips and uterus and translates into physical symptoms of diseases.
    •    Negative emotions affect hormonal health and the immune system changes the brain chemicals, the body’s ability to fight diseases and how it impacts a person’s lifespan.
    •    Let go of all the negative memories and emotions that no longer serve you, and forgive all those who have hurt you, including lovers, who do not live up to your expectations and family and society who fail to protect you.
    •    Forgive them and let go because when you forgive, you are releasing negative memories and energy from your body. You start healing yourself and you are healing the generations that come after you as well as the many generations that came before you.
  • My Music My Rights, creators connect workshop

My Music My Rights, creators connect workshop

Mumbai: The Indian Performing Right Society Ltd. (IPRS), the representative body of authors, composers, and publishers of music dedicated to safeguarding their rights has recently launched a pan India campaign ‘My Music My Rights’ in association with Dolby India, to raise awareness on IP rights in the music industry and educate music creators and independent artists on the critical aspects of the music business and publishing. IPRS is conducting this free insightful workshop in Delhi as part of the My Music My Rights campaign, marking a significant milestone in its mission to support and empower music creators nationwide. The upcoming city is Pune.

A recent EY study, ‘The Music Creator Economy: The Rise of Music Publishing in India,’ reveals that India generates 20,000 original songs annually. Despite this, financial challenges are common among creators. Among the 500 respondents surveyed, 87 per cent wished to make a living solely from music, but only 60 per cent achieved it. The majority felt the need to enhance their music production skills and improve monetisation, while only 56 per cent had the necessary equipment. India ranks 14th in recorded music revenues but 23rd in publishing revenues due to legal uncertainties and low compliance, highlighting the urgent need for intervention.

The “My Music, My Rights” campaign aims to address this gap by raising awareness and supporting music creators nationwide. The study notes that 33 per cent of released music is regional, showcasing India’s diverse musical landscape. However, challenges like accessibility, copyright awareness, and publishing rights impede artists’ recognition and compensation. Through workshops, seminars, and other activities, both online and offline, the IPRS endeavours to empower creators to navigate industry intricacies effectively.

The event will witness engaging conversations with domain experts, networking opportunities with industry insiders and fellow creators, and priceless wisdom from leading artists and panellists featuring Padmanabhan NS – head of artist & label partnership – Spotify India; MS. Nanni Singh, founder Showcase Event, Music Festival Organizer; Rohan Jain, founder-Madverse; Yama Seth, head of Talent-Level House; Karan Grover – senior director – India Middle East & Africa, Dolby Labs; Prashant Dogra – Phonographic Digital Ltd (PDL). Attendees will get to know how to manage their rights and earn royalties to maximise their earnings in the session “Managing Rights and Royalties”. They will get to elevate their music production skills with advanced techniques, focusing on Dolby Atmos technology in the session “Mixing Songs in Atmos”. With the “Spotify for Artists Masterclass” musicians will learn how to grow their music by using all the tools available on the platform.

  • Global Esports & Santanu Hazarika collab to design an exclusive Valorant Championship Tour jersey

Global Esports & Santanu Hazarika collab to design an exclusive Valorant Championship Tour jersey

Mumbai: Breaking barriers between art and gaming, a leader in South Asia’s gaming scene, Global Esports (GE) and established multidisciplinary artist Santanu Hazarika have come together to design a one-of-its-kind jersey for GE’s Valorant Championship Tour (VCT) roster. This exclusive limited-edition jersey drop is set to mark a digital renaissance in the dynamic Indian art and gaming landscapes.

The collaboration between the esports organisation and the artist is an endeavour to break the norms and reinvent the idea of how an esports jersey should look. It showcases Santanu elevating the typical plain, functional ‘team uniform’ for GE’s VCT squad by adding a distinct style quotient to it. The new jersey design perfectly embodies the convergence of art and the esports revolution of India.

Global Esports CEO and founder Rushindra Sinha mentioned, “Our jersey design has been based on our brand colours for the last decade. Generally, jerseys are looked at from the perspective of it being a uniform, and no one has really thought about disrupting it. However, we wanted to do something different. We wanted it to be a work of art while also looking at adding an element of fashion. That’s where Santanu stepped in to add his unique layer of art.”

He further added, “What makes this collaboration even more exciting is that this is perhaps an opportune way to own an exclusive Santanu Hazarika artwork. I believe this adds an evolutionary value to our jerseys!”

For designing the jersey, Santanu primarily drew inspiration from the ‘GE Lion’ depicted in Global Esports’ VCT Player Card. The ‘GE Lion’ has now been transformed into a visceral, sublime and surreal form of clothing piece in the three GE colours, reflecting the artist’s signature style. Furthermore, the jersey is representative of the team reinventing their gameplay as well as their ethos, vision and victory.

Commenting on the collaboration, Santanu Hazarika said, “I have always been inspired by gaming as an artist since I was a child. And I am a gamer myself! I instantly connected with the GE team as we both have a common ground when it comes to pop culture and gaming. They enabled me to explore a whole new world of how big esports is, which helped me incorporate elements of gaming, fashion and art together for a jersey different from anything else the esports world has ever seen.”

The specially created jersey is a testimony to GE’s commitment to pushing the envelope across diverse aspects of gaming and building an enduring esports legacy on the world stage. The limited edition jerseys are priced at Rs 1299/- and are available for purchase at https://gefighting.com/.

Meta expands third-party fact-checking program in India with Press Trust of India

Mumbai: Meta has expanded our third-party fact-checking program in India to include Press Trust of India (PTI), a dedicated fact-checking unit within the newswire’s editorial department. The partnership will enable PTI to identify, review and rate content as misinformation across Meta platforms.

To fight the spread of misinformation and provide people with more reliable information, Meta partners with independent third-party fact-checkers that are certified through the non-partisan International Fact-Checking Network (IFCN) who identify, review and rate viral misinformation across Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp. Globally, we’ve also built the largest independent fact-checking network of any platform, with nearly 100 partners around the world to review and rate viral misinformation in more than 60 languages.

With this partnership with PTI, we now have 12 fact-checking partners in India, making it the country with the most third-party fact-checking partners globally across Meta. Our Indian language coverage stands at 16 through our existing fact-checking partners to include Hindi, Bengali, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam, Urdu, Punjabi, Assamese, Manipuri/ Meitei, Marathi, Gujarati, Tamil, Kashmiri, Bhojpuri, Oriya and Nepali, besides English.

Each time a fact-checker rates a piece of content as false, altered or partly false, we reduce its distribution so that fewer people see it. We notify people who try to share the content – or who previously shared it – that the information was rated by a fact-checker, and we add a warning label that links to the fact-checker’s article with more information about the claim.

Since 2016, our fact-checking program has expanded to include nearly 100 organizations globally. The focus of the program is to address viral misinformation – particularly clear hoaxes that have no basis in fact. Fact-checking partners prioritise provably false claims that are timely, trending and consequential.
