America Ferrera makes speech for SeeHer award victory at the 29 Critics Choice Awards

Mumbai: The 29 Critics’ Choice Awards revealed itself to be a cinematic masterpiece of its own! Celebrating the year’s most exceptional performances, and finest stars, the night showcased everything from electrifying wins to tears of joy as legends were honoured and rising stars received recognition. Amongst the names that made headlines was America Ferrera who won the SeeHer Award, which honours the silver screen’s leading ladies who advocate for gender equality and portray authentic, boundary-pushing characters. America won the award for her role in Barbie, the female-led film that was a box-office phenomenon, grossing over 1.4 Billion Dollars globally. The 29 Critics’ Choice Awards streamed LIVE on Lionsgate Play on 15 January 2024. In case you missed tuning in live, rewatch the event exclusively on Lionsgate Play.

In her acceptance speech, America Ferrera said, “I yearned to see people like myself on screen as full humans. When I started working over 20 years ago, that seemed impossible, I know. It seemed impossible that anyone could make a career of portraying fully dimensional Latina characters. But because of writers, directors, producers and executives who are daring enough to rewrite outdated stories and to challenge deeply entrenched biases, I, and some of my beloved Latina colleagues, have been supremely blessed to bring to life some fierce and fantastic women. Because of that, we have had the chance to bring through some deeply layered Latina characters and characters that I could not have seen growing up.’

She further went on to say, “But now I can see her and I see her expanding in the next generation of talent like my beloved Ariana Greenblatt, who plays my daughter in Barbie, and in Jenna Ortega, and in Selena Gomez, and in so many more out there. To me, this is the best and highest use of storytelling to affirm one another’s full humanity, to uphold the truth that we are all worthy of being seen – Black, brown, indigenous Asian, Trans, disabled, any body type, any gender. We are all worthy of having our lives richly and authentically reflective.”

This category is ridiculous – Lily (Gladstone), I mean come on. Margot (Robbie) – what in the. Carrie (Mulligan) – okay. Greta and Sandra Hüller. This doesn’t make any sense. Thank you so much for this, it means so much to me. I was being serious. I don’t know what to say.”

Further thanking her cast and crew, the La La Land actor added, “This table – here is the Poor Things table. This crew, this cast – Mark, Willam Ramy, Chris, Jerrod, Katherine, Hunter, Hanah, Shula – there’s so many unbelievable people that I was lucky enough to work with. Ed Guy and Andrew Low, Tony McNamer and Yorgos, who I call Yoro because that’s how we’re supposed to say it to a Greek man if we’re speaking to them. I love you, thank you for everything this is uh really wild. Playing Bella was one of the greatest joys of my life. I got to unlearn a lot of things in playing her. Unlearn parts of shame and societal stuff that gets put on us, and I’m still working on it.”

  • Beyond hashtags: The dynamic role of social media in shaping corporate social responsibility

Beyond hashtags: The dynamic role of social media in shaping corporate social responsibility

Mumbai: In the era of connectivity and digital communication, the synergy between social media and Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) has proven to be transformative. No longer confined to traditional methods, CSR initiatives are now amplified and dynamically shaped by the power of social media. Beyond the simplicity of hashtags, these platforms are becoming dynamic agents of change, fostering meaningful connections, driving engagement, and shaping the very essence of corporate responsibility.

    The Evolution of CSR Narratives
In the past, CSR initiatives were often limited to corporate reports and annual statements. However, the advent of social media has redefined how companies tell their CSR stories. Platforms like Twitter, with its concise yet impactful format, provide a stage for companies to share real-time updates, success stories, and the impact of their initiatives. Short, punchy tweets are turning CSR narratives into dynamic, ongoing conversations with a global audience.

    Engagement Beyond Clicks and Shares
While the use of hashtags can help create awareness, the true power of social media lies in fostering deeper engagement. Platforms like Instagram and Facebook have become visual storytelling mediums, allowing companies to showcase the human side of their CSR efforts. Compelling images, immersive videos, and personal anecdotes create a connection that goes beyond a mere click or share. Audiences are invited to be a part of the journey, fostering a sense of shared responsibility.

LinkedIn: A Hub for Professional Impact
LinkedIn, often viewed as a platform for professional networking, has emerged as a powerful hub for CSR initiatives. Companies can share detailed articles, thought leadership pieces, and updates on sustainable practices, building credibility within professional circles. The platform serves as a space where businesses not only showcase their CSR achievements but also collaborate with like-minded organizations, creating a collective impact on a global scale.

YouTube: Visual Narratives for Lasting Impact
The impact of CSR initiatives is often best captured through storytelling, and YouTube has become the digital stage for such narratives. Companies now produce documentaries, interviews, and visual testimonials that provide a comprehensive view of their CSR journey. The visual appeal of YouTube content not only educates but also inspires, encouraging viewers to actively engage with and support the causes championed by the company.

Snapchat Stories: Ephemeral Content, Lasting Impact
The transient nature of Snapchat stories may seem counterintuitive for CSR, but companies are finding creative ways to utilize this platform for short-term campaigns. Quick, impactful snapshots and videos, often featuring behind-the-scenes looks at CSR projects, create a sense of urgency and excitement. Snapchat’s younger demographic ensures that CSR initiatives are communicated to a new generation with a unique and dynamic approach.

Twitter Chats and Reddit Discussions: Community-Driven Impact
Moving beyond mere broadcast, companies are now engaging in Twitter chats and Reddit discussions to foster community-driven CSR initiatives. These platforms provide spaces for real-time conversations, enabling businesses to gather valuable feedback, address concerns, and involve the audience directly in the decision-making process.

In conclusion, the dynamic role of social media in shaping Corporate Social Responsibility extends far beyond the use of hashtags. It’s about creating a narrative that resonates with audiences on a personal level, fostering engagement that goes beyond a simple share or like. Social media has become the conduit for companies to showcase the humanity behind their CSR efforts, encouraging a collective commitment to positive change. As businesses continue to leverage the dynamic features of these platforms, the impact of CSR will only grow more profound, influencing not just the corporate landscape but also the societal mindset towards responsibility and sustainable practices.

  • “Music is a powerful storytelling tool deeply ingrained in Indian culture”: Rohit Jugraj

“Music is a powerful storytelling tool deeply ingrained in Indian culture”: Rohit Jugraj

Mumbai: Chamak is an Indian musical thriller on SonyLIV,[2] starring Paramvir Singh Cheema, Isha Talwar, Akasa Singh, Manoj Pahwa, Gippy Grewal, Mukesh Chhabra, Kunwar Grewal, Prince Kanwaljit Singh and other artists from Hindi as well as Punjabi film industry

In the series Chamak, a young rapper Kaala leaves Canada for Punjab and discovers that his late father was the legendary famous singer Tara Singh, who was murdered on stage. As Kaala navigates through the complex landscape of politics, honor killings, and corporate rivalry, he meets Jazz, an aspiring artist. An impromptu rap battle with MC Square elevates Kaala’s popularity. However, his journey gets entangled in the web of Teeja Sur, once owned by his father but now in the hands of Pratap. Amidst three compelling theories—political conspiracies, honor killings, or a business takeover.

Directed & co created by Rohit Jugraj, Chamak is streaming on SonyLIV, with 6 episodes featuring songs from different genres of music like Punjabi folk, fusion, Desi Hip-Hop, Rap, etc.

Indiantelevision.com caught up with RG Rudram Productions founder Rohit Jugraj, where he shared some interesting excerpts regarding this series.

    Edited excerpts

On sharing more about the daring subject matter explored in “Chamak” and the motivation that delved you into the gritty realities of the Punjabi music industry

The motivation behind delving into the gritty realities of the Punjabi music industry in “Chamak” stemmed from a first hand observation. Witnessing Punjabi artists, who deeply love their country, compelled to establish homes abroad due to safety concerns deeply troubled me. Our connection to our motherland, the love for India, and the unsettling fact that individuals felt forced to seek safety outside their homeland inspired me to shed light on this pressing issue.

On your role as a filmmaker in addressing and shedding light on such prevalent issues within the industry

The Punjabi music industry faces external pressures like extortion and crime, along with internal challenges of jealousy among its artists. The sensitivity and talent inherent in Punjabi artists contribute to heightened jealousies, forming factions and camps within the industry. As a filmmaker, I aim to delve into the human psyche, exploring the intricacies of relationships, emotions, and the darker aspects of art and music. “Chamak” becomes a canvas where I portray the complex dynamics of the industry, emphasizing the personal nature of artistic rivalries and the extremes to which these conflicts can escalate.

On your journey has involved crafting narratives with purpose, evident from your work in both Bollywood and Punjabi cinema

My endeavour is to continue presenting stories that entertain while carrying a deeper societal resonance. While often labeled a commercial filmmaker, I believe in infusing substance into entertainment. For instance, a film I made about Sansarpur, the mecca of Hockey in Punjab, aimed to bring to light the rich sporting heritage of a village. I envision future projects rooted in various Indian regions, telling stories that resonate with the audience while keeping entertainment at the core.

On elaborating the approached portraying passion and violence within this relationship, and what significance it holds in the overall narrative

The father-son relationship is inherently poignant, layered with love, tension, and the pursuit of respect. In “Chamak,” this complex dynamic unfolds through various relationships, exploring the intricacies and beauty within the familial bond. The portrayal includes different father-son narratives, each contributing to the broader exploration of the psyche behind these relationships within families. The themes of passion and violence serve to add depth to the storytelling, offering a nuanced perspective on familial dynamics.

On maintaining a fearless approach in your filmmaking, especially when dealing with sensitive subjects, and what message do you hope to convey through such narratives

While acknowledging that fear is a part of the human experience, I consider myself a “Fearful Warrior.” Overcoming fear becomes essential in telling stories that demand attention. The strength to face potential backlash comes from my audience, whom I view as gods. I persist in telling stories that entertain and provoke thought, even when dealing with sensitive subjects. Through these narratives, I hope to highlight societal issues, encourage dialogue, and bring about positive change.

On highlighting your collaboration with Indian music stalwarts in delivering the biggest Indian web series musical thriller

Music is a powerful storytelling tool deeply ingrained in Indian culture, and its role in “Chamak” is no exception. Collaborating with a diverse array of Punjabi music stalwarts and emerging talents has been a profound experience. Each artist, from Gippy Grewal to Asees Kaur, brought their unique flavor to the musical landscape of the series. Music not only enhances the emotional depth of storytelling but also has the ability to resonate with the audience on a profound level. The collaborative effort involved curating music from various artists, with each song contributing to the series’ overall narrative. Through this musical journey, I’ve learned the importance of humility and the profound impact music can have on conveying emotions. My hope is that the music of “Chamak” touches the souls of the audience, adding another layer of richness to the storytelling experience.

  • ‘Water Mafia’ documentary is a harsh reality, extraordinary tale of the Indian water mafia

‘Water Mafia’ documentary is a harsh reality, extraordinary tale of the Indian water mafia

Mumbai: In the last few years, the changed dynamics of the world have brought technology and culture integration. From the coffee sip to water culture, every society has its cultural dimension but have you ever heard about the artificial world crisis in the cities of Mumbai, Delhi, and other metropolitan cities? Yes, the probability of all society’s divide is because of the influx into metro cities. The answer is No. It’s none other than water.

DocuBay recently premiered its exclusive first Indian documentary for Indian documentary enthusiasts named ‘ Water Mafia ‘. In the ’90s Mumbai suffered from roadside gang war. The Mafia was born out of the cotton industry transformation, closed orthodox economy, unavailability of jobs, strikes, and many other reasons. Now mafia turned from bullets to ‘ Wallets’. Mafia exists anywhere in society right from government employees, municipal corporation employees, politicians, local dons, or anyone. DocuBay predicted a crucial problem that is not out of cultural problems or luxury but is the ‘ Water Mafia’.

school, and education institutes we learned about water scarcity but is it completely true? It is an artificial shortage created by the social evil mentality of a few individuals. Though the water level supply is optimum, the level of water supply is not reaching masses from its middlemen. DocuBay exposed the crime, criminals, modus operandi, bureaucracy, functional deficiencies, corruption, and most importantly ‘Lateral damage ‘of moral responsibilities and how basic right for water is freqent delibrated efforts abolish by water mafia.

One of the largest worldwide documentary libraries and apps ‘ DocuBay ‘ premiered its launch of the new documentary Water Mafia in Mumbai.

In the tough competition of OTT pricing and content warfare, DocuBay came up in India with Water Mafia to explore corruption in water supply in cities. It is the only app recently that offers content limited to documentaries and docuseries. Such contemporary issue awareness needs an hour. In this series, DocuBay produced nonfictional documentaries in a sophisticated manner without compromising anything in content. It is the first Hindi documentary by DocuBay to launch internationally. Whether it is photography, sequence, narration contextual understanding for the audience personally I feel awesome.

The Investigative documentary provides an depth exploration of the extensive underground water market in the two major cities including Delhi, and Mumbai. Thought interviews of individuals connected to the water mafia, underworld, whistleblowers, victims, and citizens. The new thing I found in this documentary is not to rely on any fictional data and to focus on real pictures with crime data statistics.

What’s new in the documentary – Infographics, content sequencing, cinematography, Journalist Vivek Agarwal’s spectacular research and analysis, and last but not least videography.

What’s missing – I feel the length of the documentary can be more. It is a lengthy subject to tackle. From the initial scene, you get a special scoop that is untapped in OTT space. Personally duration of the documentary can increase also. The rest of the documentary is almost perfect.

Internationally and nationally DocuBay has been expanding its horizons over the last four financial years. DocuBay targets niche market segments to occupy non-fictional market space. EBITDA ( Earning before tax interest depreciation and amortization) has increased more than 18 per cent globally.

According to sources, DocuBay has a plan to expand into the Indian market by encompassing more Indian content soon exploring different subjects which not touched by Indian OTT cogloromates. DocuBay has plans to launch one documentary every month. In the Indian diaspora DocuBay not have recently launched full-fledged documentaries for Hindi heartland. It can be contextual and a mixture of Hinglish also with English.

DocuBay has strategically tied up with many brand associates to leverage its target audience. With an increasing audience for documentaries, there is a high demand for documentary content but supply is not that optimum to explore for the Indian market. The DocuBay aims for insightful perspectives from Investigative journalists, economists, and urban planners to shed light on the role of government corruption through this documentary.

Right now many OTT apps offer different GEC, web series, movies, and documentary content but the Indian market is running majorly on a hybrid model whereas DocuBay wants to be a trendsetter. Currently in the Indian market DocuBay costs 999/- per year which is slightly reasonable in comparison to its innovative offering.

DocuBay is part of the IN10 media network’s extensive OTT cogloromate led by Aditya Pittie.

The major concern highlighted in the documentary – The Water Mafia of our times looting people with series of chain exploitation to the common man. Particularly this issue facing in lower and middle-income segments. Crucially no administration is bothered about criminals and water thieves operating in slums.

I strongly recommend this documentary for the documentary enthusiasts audience. The film is directed by Naman Govil. In the preview premiere show, Girish Dwibhashyam – COO, of DocuBay, and Anil Chaudhary – Director, of VICE India are the people who are committed to building state-of-the-art infrastructure for building brands globally.

Where to Watch – DocuBay App on Google Play Store.
