  • India has 96 mn SVOD subscriptions, 40.7 mn subscribers: Ormax report

India has 96 mn SVOD subscriptions, 40.7 mn subscribers: Ormax report

Mumbai: India has 353 million OTT users and 96 active paid subscriptions, according to Ormax OTT Audience Report 2021.

The research is based on a sample size of 12,000 across urban and rural India, was conducted from May to July 2021. The report breaks the universe by gender, age, NCCS, pop strata, states, and cities.

The findings revealed that one in four Indians watched online videos at least once in the last one month. Apart from 96 million active paid OTT subscriptions, there are 40.7 million paying (SVOD) audiences, that is, an average of 2.4 subscriptions per paying audience member. 66 per cent of these paid subscriptions are with the male audience. The top six metros contribute only 11 per cent to India’s OTT universe but 35 per cent of total paid subscriptions. Bengaluru, Delhi and Mumbai are the top three cities in this regard, with more than eight million active paid subscriptions each.

“India’s OTT audience universe is rapidly growing, and an accurate estimation of market size is a crucial strategic component in a growing category,” said Ormax Media, founder and chief executive officer, Shailesh Kapoor. “While streaming companies have data on usage and subscription of their own platforms, there is no industry-level audience research available to size and profile the Indian OTT market at large. This research, which will be conducted in the same period every year, aims to plug this significant data gap in the streaming industry in India.”

Kapoor further said OTT is no longer a niche category, but at 25 per cent penetration, there is still a huge potential to grow the market, especially outside the top cities. “We have seen a rise in regional OTT platforms in India over the last year. This report provides market and demographic level data for platforms to take sound investment decisions on regional products, be it a stand-alone app or regional content within a national app,” he added.

  • ShemarooMe taps into OTT boom with movies and regional content

ShemarooMe taps into OTT boom with movies and regional content

Mumbai: ‘Warning: Graphic Content’ – because the mind is inclined to do exactly what it’s warned against, and a picture so captioned is sure to attract the viewers’ attention.

ShemarooMe’s recent social media campaign recreated iconic scenes from the movies and ‘graphically’ used the lens of charts and reports to come up with quirky infographics making people smile. Behind the campaign’s minimalistic execution was a deeper insight that stems from Shemaroo’s over five decades of experience and expertise in dealing with content. It also forms the basis of the Company’s content strategy which has crafted the unique ‘movies-devotional-regional’ proposition for the brand in the Hindi web series-dominated Indian OTT space.

Shemaroo Entertainment’s head of marketing, Rahul Mishra tells us that close to 60 per cent of the content on ShemarooMe, which is the OTT platform of the content powerhouse- is movies, with the rest being dominated by devotional and regional (Gujarati). In fact, the brand’s foray into Originals began with Gujarati web series in April this year. Coming back to the movies, Mishra reiterates that it will continue to be the mainstay for ShemarooMe.

“We believe that there is a huge OTT opportunity in India where the audience is seeking different forms of content. However, a large number of them want content that is familiar in terms of the format and presentation. That’s why movies and Bollywood continue to be relevant, and that’s also where our strength lies,” he says.

The Content Conundrum and Nostalgia Economy

Mishra shares that dealing with content over decades has given Shemaroo the understanding that while new formats are instantly picked up for consumption, their popularity wanes after a certain time period. On the other hand, the consumption of an established piece of content that is known to the audience not only stays steady but increases consistently. He cites the example of Shemaroo’s YouTube channel, ‘Shemaroo Filmy Gaane’ to support his stance. With a following of 54.8 mn, the retro music station is among the most subscribed channels.

The ‘Warning: Graphic Content’ campaign is one of the many such efforts by the brand to familiarise the youth with stories and characters that are timeless. Mishra points out that “the familiarity of content and affinity to a particular content piece keeps bringing the viewers back to it again and again, and this has led to the creation of the self-driving/sustaining ‘Nostalgia Economy’.

Building on its huge library of classics as the foundation, ShemarooMe has been bringing in innovative approaches to further the OTT ecosystem ever since its launch in 2019.  With regard to films, the brand introduced a TVOD service called ‘ShemarooMe Box Office’ during the lockdown wherein it replicated the theatrical model by bringing in movies every Friday. These included small-budget titles such as ‘My Client’s Wife’, The Least of These’ and ‘X Zone’ that were struggling for a release on account of theatres remaining closed. ShemarooMe also collaborated with the online ticket booking website BookMyShow for this initiative. While the model was born out of necessity, nearly ten films were released under it.

Meanwhile, ShemarooMe came up with a more robust offering, ‘Bollywood Premiere’ which involved world digital premieres of movies coming straight out of the theatres, either after running their due course or prematurely, but not exposed to the audience on any other medium including television. These included the likes of ‘Amma ki Boli’, ‘One Day Justice’, ‘Paharganj’, and ‘Door ke Darshan’. Mishra proudly declares that his team has successfully managed to keep ‘Bollywood Premiere’ running for 100 weeks uninterrupted in these unprecedented times when content production has become a big challenge.

    The regional-first approach to Originals

ShemarooMe’s Originals journey began in April this year, with its first regional expansion happening in Gujarat. Being in the Gujarati content acquisition business for over a decade, the Company has established itself among the leaders in the space. Although, it hasn’t dabbled in Hindi originals yet.

According to Mishra, “the two significant features of the Gujarat market are its major overlap with Hindi and the underdeveloped content ecosystem. This translates into a huge opportunity for us. Our mission in this market is a fairly large one; we want to grow the industry by making Gujaratis fall in love with Gujarati entertainment once again.”

ShemarooMe has been aggressively pushing the brand in the state, with one of its brand ambassadors in the market being Gujarati film and theatre artist Malhar Thakar. The app was launched with a direct-to-digital release ‘Swagatam’ which featured Thakar. Ever since ShemarooMe has kept up with the promise of bringing a fresh piece of content every week across formats and genres. The three pillars of the platform’s content strategy for Gujarat include movies (direct-to-digital or digital premieres), original web series, and ‘nataks’ (plays).

Commenting on the significance of ‘nataks’ in the market, Mishra informs that plays have traditionally been part of the family viewing experience for a Gujarati household on weekends. “In the big cities like Ahmedabad, Surat, and Vadodara, and also in Mumbai which has a fairly large Gujarati population, there are auditoriums dedicated to running ticketed Gujarati plays. This is an inherent part of Gujarati culture. While some of these plays are based on authored content, most are slice-of-life with a strong element of humour which resonates with the Gujaratis who are known for their funny side,” he remarks.

Shemaroo has been in the business of filming Gujarati plays and making them accessible for people to watch on their preferred medium – TV, YouTube, and now OTT. Currently, there are over 250 plays on ShemarooMe, and more shoots are being commissioned constantly.

On the business side of things, ShemarooMe has largely been a subscription-driven service so far. Even as the relevance of branded content grows, it has no plans of exploring the advertising model yet. “Given the affluence of Gujarat, many national and regional brands want to associate with us for branded solutions,” asserts Mishra. He is confident that even with the foray into original productions the strategy will work for them in the near-to-mid-term future.

ZEE5 unveils first look of ‘Break Point’

Mumbai: ZEE5 has unveiled first look of the upcoming non-fiction series “Break Point”, based on the lives of tennis champions Leander Paes and Mahesh Bhupathi. The seven-episode series will be exclusively available on ZEE5 soon.

The streaming platform has partnered with award-winning filmmaker duo Ashwiny Iyer Tiwari and Nitesh Tiwari to helm this series. It marks ZEE5’s first partnership with the filmmakers under their banner Earthsky Pictures, known for films such as “Dangal”, “Panga”, “Chhichhore”, and “Nil Battey Sannata”. This is also the first time that Ashwiny and Nitesh will be co-directing a project.

Revealing the first poster of the ZEE5 original series, Ashwiny Iyer Tiwari and Nitesh Tiwari in a joint statement said, “It’s great to bring to screen a series like this on the home-grown video streaming platform ZEE5. Working with icons Mahesh Bhupathi and Leander Paes has been surreal. Bringing their untold story to screen is something that we will cherish forever.”

“Break Point” is a telling narrative of Paes and Bhupati’s friendship, partnership, belief, hard work and ambitions which made them one of the most feared doubles pairs during the late 1990s, ranking the world’s top position in 1999. The series also throws light on their bitter breakup and how they couldn’t hold on to their meteoric rise.

Sharing his sentiments on the upcoming series, Paes said, “I enjoyed this walk down memory lane shooting for ‘Break Point’ with wonderful storytellers like Ashwiny Iyer Tiwari and Nitesh Tiwari in collaboration with ZEE5. While Mahesh and my on-court partnership was widely covered, our off-court chemistry was largely speculated. This is the first time that our fans will get to see and hear it all, first-hand. Mahesh and I worked really hard to put India on top of world tennis and we are glad that we are getting a chance to present our story to the world, like never before.”

Bhupathi added, “It is no secret that I am reserved when it comes to communicating, so this is a big step for me to relive the journey and put it all out there in the most candid and honest manner. But, at the same time, I am happy that our fans will get to see our journey which was a mix of sweat, perseverance, brotherhood and at times blood and tears as well. This is surely going to be a treat for all, and I am thankful to Ashwiny, Nitesh, and ZEE5 for giving it everything.”

  • Netflix launches first two mobile games in Poland

Netflix launches first two mobile games in Poland

Mumbai: Netflix has launched its first two mobile games on Android – “Stranger Things: 1984” and “Stranger Things 3” for members in Poland. Netflix Geeked made the announcement on 26 August via their official Twitter handle.

“Today members in Poland can try Netflix mobile gaming on Android with two games, Stranger Things: 1984 and Stranger Things 3. It’s very, very early days and we’ve got a lot of work to do in the months ahead, but this is the first step,” reads the tweet.

According to a report by Variety, Netflix games will have no ads or in-app purchases and titles will be included with a Netflix streaming plan. In the Android app, available game titles will show up under a new menu that says ‘Play Mobile Games’ and users who click on it will be directed to a Google Play Store page to download the game. The report indicates that over time the games will be more tightly integrated into the Netflix app itself.

“Stranger Things 3: The Game” is developed by studio BonusXP and allows gamers to play through familiar events in Stranger Things season three where they will be able to uncover new quests, character interactions and secrets. “Stranger Things: 1984” is described as a stylized retro action-adventure similar to the arcade games back in the 80s, letting players solve puzzles, collect Eggos and gnomes along the way, said the Variety report.

In July, Netflix hired former Facebook, vice president, Mike Verdu to head its video games unit as vice president, game development. Verdu has been associated with EA Mobile, Kabam, TapZen and served as chief executive officer at Zynga from 2009 to 2012.

Last month, the company officially revealed its plans to enter the video game market as a new category to help it attract and retain customers. In their second-quarter earnings call, co-CEO Reed Hastings emphasised that Netflix is not looking to generate revenues from video games per se, it is about “enhancing the big service that we have”, he noted.

India’s affiliate industry is on track to hit $835 mn by 2025: Experts

Mumbai: The Internet and Mobile Association of India (IAMAI) recently concluded the seventh edition of India Affiliate Summit (IAS) that witnessed over 3000 delegates from across the globe. Over 700 companies and 50 exhibitors participated in the event, held on 25 August.

Some of the crucial topics of discussion at the event were: ‘How to build a multi-million-pound affiliate empire?’, ‘Is performance marketing a win-win deal or has a flip side?’, ‘Growing role of affiliate marketing in fintech domain’, ‘How are influencers changing the affiliate marketing fame?’, ‘Implementing affiliate marketing in mobile gaming’, and ‘GenZ, the social media generation – vital audience for affiliates’.

Speaking about the potential of the Indian affiliate industry, Commission’s CEO, Parul Bhargava said, “India’s affiliate industry has tremendous potential of growth and is on track to touch the targeted $835 million by 2025 from around $300 million currently. The Covid-19 pandemic has not affected the affiliate marketing industry; definitely digital and affiliate has grown. Affiliate marketing still contributes about 10 per cent of digital marketing budgets. E-commerce, travel homestays, BFSI, education, D2C, gaming, web services, and health are the top industries contributing to affiliate marketing in India.”

Echoing similar views, GrabOn’s founder, Ashok Reddy remarked, “We have just scratched the surface of affiliate marketing in India. The affiliate industry has been growing multi-fold over the years and there is no doubt that there is unprecedented growth ahead.  With new content creators on the block and AI that sees no limits, affiliate is shifting and will continue to shift into the hands of the users. Mobile-first strategy, influencers, and video-based content marketing will see an uptrend for the next few years.”

Optimise, managing director, LD Sharma said that while the sector has the potential to become a billion-dollar industry in the next couple of years, rising fraudulent activities seem to be a major concern. “Fraudulent clicks, cookie stuffing, bad bots, geo-masking, click spamming are some of the challenges for the industry,” he said.

Sharma also mentioned that government intervention in the form of regulations and punishments for unethical businesses will help the industry to grow further. Suggesting measures to further this growth he added, “Under the current GST regime affiliate marketers are required to pay 18 per cent GST, however, the same is not applicable in other countries. Revisiting the GST regime for affiliate marketers and setting up a regulatory body would be an impetus for the entire ecosystem.”
