Reliance teams up with Blast to storm India’s booming esports arena

MUMBAI: Reliance Industries’ wholly-owned subsidiary Rise Worldwide has joined forces with European esports powerhouse Blast to form a joint venture that aims to revolutionise India’s nascent but rapidly expanding competitive gaming landscape.

The partnership will leverage Blast’s tournament expertise and publisher relationships to bring global esports properties to Indian shores while developing bespoke competitions for the local market—a digital playground that already boasts a staggering 600 million gamers, representing 18 per cent of the world’s button-bashers.
India’s gaming market, currently valued at $3.8bn, is projected to rocket to $9.2bn by 2029, growing at a blistering 19 per cent annually. Meanwhile, the global esports market is expected to surge from $2.8bn to $16.7bn by 2033, suggesting there are digital gold mines yet to be excavated.

“India is one of the most exciting and fastest-growing gaming markets in the world,” said Blast chief executive Robbie Douek, whose company currently works with gaming titans including Epic Games, Valve, Riot Games, Krafton and Ubisoft across popular titles with a combined monthly player base exceeding 350 million.

The new venture will capitalise on Blast’s production prowess and intellectual property portfolio while tapping into Jio’s technological muscle and distribution network via the JioGames platform. Services will span tournament management, targeted marketing, production and broadcasting—essentially creating a full-service esports juggernaut.

“With this partnership, Indian esports will be able to realise its full potential,” said Reliance Sports  head Devang Bhimjyani.

The timing appears impeccable, as the Indian government recently granted official recognition to esports by declaring it part of the “multi-sports event” category, providing legitimacy to a pursuit once dismissed as mere child’s play.

Blast, known for producing tournaments that fill arenas and generate billions of views across 150+ territories, will now bring its show-stopping production values to a country where cricket has traditionally dominated sporting consciousness. With planned arena stops in global cities like London, Singapore, Austin and Rio in 2025, the addition of Indian venues seems a natural next step in the company’s expansion strategy.

For India’s growing army of competitive gamers, the partnership offers tantalising prospects: international exposure, improved tournament infrastructure, and potentially, a shot at the multi-million dollar prize pools that have transformed gaming nerds into millionaire celebrities elsewhere in the world.

  • WWE superstars to enter Clash of Clans through April

WWE superstars to enter Clash of Clans through April

MUMBAI: WWE and Supercell’s Clash of Clans are throwing down the gauntlet, announcing a partnership that’s set to turn April into a digital wrestling ring. Undisputed WWE Champion Cody Rhodes, Rhea Ripley, The Undertaker, Bianca Belair, and a posse of other WWE heavyweights are leaping into the Clash of Clans arena, reimagined as iconic in-game characters.

This isn’t just a fleeting cameo; it’s a full-blown invasion. Clash of Clans is getting a WWE makeover, complete with themed environments, gameplay events, cosmetics, and Easter Eggs that pay homage to WWE’s rich legacy. And leading the charge is Rhodes, a self-confessed Clash of Clans aficionado, who’s being reborn as the Barbarian King.

Rhodes, under his OverlordRhodes  player handle, isn’t just a digital character; he’s a digital despot. He stars in the live-action launch video, showcasing a gameplay style built on villainous destruction and a healthy dose of digital domination.

The WWE Superstar roster getting the Clash of Clans treatment includes:

    * Rhea Ripley as Archer Queen
    * The Undertaker as Grand Warden
    * Bianca Belair as Royal Champion
    * Rey Mysterio as Minion Prince
    * Kane as P.E.K.K.A
    * Becky Lynch as Valkyrie
    * Jey Uso as Thrower

“I’ve spent years building my legacy in WWE, but it’s time for fans to know where I’ve landed most of my victories, in Clash of Clans,” Rhodes declared. “As OverlordRhodes, I don’t defend, I conquer. Villages will fall, and any opposition will be crushed under my command. This isn’t about playing fair in the ring, it’s about ruling the battlefield. Just like at WrestleMania 41, I’m stepping in with one goal – absolute victory. I’ve waited a long time for this moment, and now that I’ve arrived, there’s no stopping me.”

Supercell head of live game Sara Bach revealed, “When the game team found out Cody Rhodes and other Superstars were long-time Clash of Clans fans, they didn’t hesitate to reach out to WWE. This partnership in Clash of Clans is on a scale we’ve never created before – from the in-game event reaching tens of millions of players, to WrestleMania 41 and our Clash of Clans match as a first-of-its-kind event on the biggest stage.”

In essence, WWE and Clash of Clans are teaming up for a digital rumble that’s set to shake up both worlds. It’s a cross-promotional knockout, promising a month of mayhem and a WrestleMania 41 showdown that’s sure to be a digital spectacle.

  • Tamil Nadu hits play on global esports with mega Chennai championship

Tamil Nadu hits play on global esports with mega Chennai championship

MUMBAI: Game on, Chennai. The Tamil Nadu government has just rage-quit the sidelines and entered the esports arena with a mic-drop announcement: the Chennai Esports Global Championship (CeGC). And no, this isn’t a side quest. It’s a full-blown, state-backed, international esports extravaganza. Buckle up, because India’s southern tech-and-temple capital is about to be the battleground for global gaming gladiators.

In what marks a seismic shift for Indian esports, the CeGC will bring top-tier teams from across the world to Chennai later this year. This move by the Tamil Nadu government is no token gesture; it’s a bold, joystick-wielding power play. For the first time, an Indian state is levelling up its commitment to the industry with a dedicated global event.

The youth welfare and sports development department is spearheading the project, armed with a Rs 562 crore war chest allocated in the 2025–2026 state budget. Part of this fund will go into summoning the CeGC into existence—cementing Chennai’s spot as India’s esports capital and a genuine global hotspot for competitive gaming.

While the full title lineup remains under wraps (no spoilers yet), CeGC is poised to build on Tamil Nadu’s successful esports experiment during the CM’s Trophy 2024. That event, organised by Skyesports, saw over 5,000 gamers from across the state brawl it out across multiple titles. Think of CeGC as that on steroids, with international bragging rights on the line.

This isn’t just about headshots and XP. It’s a cultural reset. Esports is now a medal event at both the Commonwealth and Asian Games and is primed to make its standalone Olympic debut in 2027. Tamil Nadu’s move echoes national momentum—the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports recently included esports in its cash incentive programme, giving it a legitimacy boost that could make even cricket jealous.

By planting its flag in this digital battlefield, Tamil Nadu isn’t just organising a tournament. It’s laying the groundwork for a future where India isn’t just playing catch-up but leading the game. Chennai, get ready. The world is logging in.

  • India gears up for Esports Conclave 2025 to shape gaming future

India gears up for Esports Conclave 2025 to shape gaming future

MUMBAI: India is levelling up in the esports arena, with the Esports Conclave 2025 set to take centre stage on 1 April in New Delhi. Organised by the Physical Education Foundation of India (PEFI) in partnership with Krafton India and supported by Invest India as the knowledge partner, the conclave is poised to redefine the future of competitive gaming in the country.

Bringing together senior government officials, policymakers, industry leaders, and esports professionals, the event will tackle crucial topics like international tournament readiness, investment opportunities, job creation, and esports infrastructure development. The discussions will also contribute to an Esports framework recommendation for the government, charting a course for esports regulation and industry recognition.

With the theme “Forging the Path to Global Leadership”, the conclave will explore ways to integrate esports into Aatmanirbhar Bharat, positioning India as a powerhouse in the global gaming ecosystem.

The need for a structured regulatory framework has become more pressing as esports gains momentum. With its inclusion in major sporting events like the Asian Games and the upcoming Olympic Esports Games 2027, the industry is no longer just a niche digital phenomenon, it’s a legitimate competitive sport with global stakes.

PEFI secretary Piyush Jain said, “The upcoming Esports Conclave 2025 will mark a historic milestone in establishing India as a global powerhouse in the world of esports. Esports has evolved into a dynamic and competitive sporting industry with immense potential of growth. This conclave will serve as a catalyst, bringing together industry leaders, gamers, and policymakers to shape the future of esports in India. It will facilitate crucial discussions on policy frameworks, infrastructure, and opportunities for Indian talent on the global stage. PEFI is dedicated to making India a frontrunner in this digital sports revolution and is fully prepared to embrace this new era of competitive gaming.”

Krafton India CEO Sean Hyunil Sohn said, “Esports is the future of competitive entertainment. At Krafton India, we are committed to fostering a structured, sustainable, and internationally competitive esports ecosystem that empowers players and drives industry growth. Esports Conclave 2025 is a defining moment in this journey, bringing together policymakers, industry pioneers, and esports professionals to shape a long-term vision for India’s Esports industry.”

Nodwin Gaming co-founder & managing director Akshat Rathee said, “With esports now finding a place in major international sporting events, India has a real shot at becoming a global contender. Esports Conclave 2025 is an important step in that direction – it’s where the right conversations can happen between the industry, government, and other key players. Whether it’s building grassroots programs, improving tournament ecosystems, or integrating esports into initiatives like Khelo India, this platform gives us a chance to align on what the future should look like. The goal is simple: create the structure and support needed for Indian esports talent to thrive on the world stage.”

The Indian gaming industry is projected to hit 7.5 billion dollars by FY28, growing at a staggering CAGR of 20 per cent. As one of the fastest-growing esports markets in the world, India is not just playing the game, it’s setting new rules.

By bringing together visionaries from policy and industry, Esports Conclave 2025 is more than just a conference; it’s a game-changing moment for India’s digital economy. With strategic vision, investment, and collaboration, India is gearing up to not only participate in the global esports arena but to dominate it.

  • Dream 11’s IPL technology challenge

    Dream 11’s IPL technology challenge

MUMBAI: IPL 2025  Day One. The much hyped and awaited opener between RCB and KKR is about to begin. The Dream Sports War Room – as the tech hub has been labelled – is a hustle-bustle of activity. Energy levels are high, there’s tension in the air amongst all the engineers and product managers who have stationed themselves in the office for the cracker of a match that’s about to go on air.

Viewer engagement expectations on the Dream 11 app  are higher than ever following the merger of JioCinema and Disney Hotstar into this behemoth streamer called JioHotstar with a subscription base of 60 million.
Even before the first ball has been bowled fantasy players by the millions have started their game play on Dream 11.

At the centre of it all is Dream Sports chief technology officer Amit Sharma  – the commander of the nerve centre that keeps millions of cricket fans connected—come traffic surge or system meltdown. Like the captain of a ship sailing through a turbulent sea he retains his calm so that he can steer his charge safely through the storm.

“IPL isn’t just a cricket tournament; it’s a digital gladiatorial arena,” Sharma explained on Linkedin. ” We’re all hands on deck, I really mean it. Every team works in tandem to make it bigger and better than the previous season! While the event lasts just for a couple of months, we prepare by making our systems more robust throughout the year. There’s a lot that goes behind stitching the most seamless experience for our users – from coming on the app, selecting a contest to making their dream team and real-time leader boards – it’s truly a journey. On top of our mind is the fact that we’re not just hosting an app; we’re managing a national digital phenomenon that can spike to 700 million requests per minute. “

And how does the engineering team manage to keep the app in good enough shape  despite the killer load that piles up when the league gathers steam?

Before the first ball is bowled, Sharma’s team conducts a “service operational maturity assessment” (SOMA)—a forensic examination of over 100 critical services. Engineers run what can only be described as digital stress tests: benchmarks that would make Silicon Valley veterans break into a sweat. Chaos tests and real-world load simulations are pressured on the system to fine-tune applications and infrastructure.

“We’re not just testing; we’re essentially performing open-heart surgery on our digital infrastructure,” he quips. Some systems receive targeted upgrades, while others undergo complete architectural metamorphosis.

A key tool that streamlines the massive inflow of online players is “Scaler”, Dream Sports’ in-house traffic
management marvel. This system doesn’t just respond to traffic—it anticipates it. Predictive models allocate resources before traffic spikes can even think about overwhelming the system.

The war room’s crown jewels? Two razor-sharp monitoring systems:

    1. Watch Commander (WACO): A real-time performance sentinel that catches anomalies faster than a fielder’s lightning-quick catch.

    2. Pulse: A user interaction tracker that identifies potential glitches before they can say “out.”

Behind every algorithmic prediction and system upgrade is a team of engineers who treat digital resilience like a cricket strategy—meticulously planned, ruthlessly executed. Dream Sports’ incident management system stands ready, a digital emergency response unit primed to tackle any unforeseen technological yorkers.
Each IPL season is more than a sporting event—it’s a technological crucible where Dream Sports redefines the boundaries of digital scalability, says Sharma. “It  challenges us to rethink and refine how we approach scale, speed and reliability,” he adds.

Back to Dream Sports War Room and to the opening match of the IPL. All that is needed to take RCB to their first victory in the 2025 edition is a thump to the boundary, which Livingstone does when he wacks the Johnson delivery past mid-on to the ropes  to the dismay of those in the Eden Gardens stadium.

In the war-room, Sharma leans back and heaves a sigh of relief. The match saw the Dream 11  app getting a peak concurrency of 16.5 crore users. And it held up strong, without any glitches to the delight of all the engineers who were on standby. Another battle won. Till the next one.

  • South Korean gaming titan Krafton guns for India’s lucrative market: PTI report

South Korean gaming titan Krafton guns for India’s lucrative market: PTI report

MUMBAI: South Korean gaming powerhouse Krafton, creator of the wildly popular Battlegrounds Mobile India (BGMI), is loading up its investment arsenal as it targets expansion in India—a territory that ranks among its top five global markets. The company has already pumped $200 million into Indian ventures and isn’t about to hit pause on its spending spree anytime soon.

Krafton India chief executive Sean Hyunil Sohn is positively bullish about the country’s gaming prospects. “We want to double down on gaming and its addressable area,” Sohn told PTI, adding that the company sees “much bigger potential for the next two to three years.”

What makes India such an irresistible playground for Krafton? The answer lies in its unique “mobile gaming native” status. While gamers in mature markets typically evolved from consoles to PCs before embracing mobile, Indian players cut their teeth directly on smartphones—a distinction that has Krafton’s boardroom salivating.

The demographics certainly stack the deck in India’s favour. A young, tech-savvy population coupled with rapidly increasing smartphone adoption creates the perfect storm for gaming growth. Despite being a relative lightweight on the global gaming scene, India’s potential has Krafton ready to place hefty bets on its future.
“We will not stop investing… say at $200-300 million,” Sohn declared. “We are still actively looking at opportunities to invest and maybe acquire.”

After a cracking financial performance in 2024, the company feels flush enough to double down on India, which it views as one of its strongest performing markets.

What’s Krafton looking for in potential partners?

The company, which prides itself on maintaining a developer’s mindset despite its global publisher status, seeks collaborators who are “really passionate about game development.” Any acquisition targets must share Krafton’s enthusiasm for India’s gaming potential.

Sohn believes India has the muscle to create games for global markets but laments the lack of awareness about gaming as a viable career path.

“We need support from the government and education institutions to put the best talent out for the younger generation,” he urged, calling for a concerted effort to level up India’s gaming ecosystem.

With its mobile-first culture, youthful demographics, and Krafton’s deep pockets backing it, India’s gaming industry appears primed to score big in the coming years. Game on!

  • Mumbai Comic Con 2025 levels up, plays host to epic Indie Game Utsav

Mumbai Comic Con 2025 levels up, plays host to epic Indie Game Utsav

MUMBAI: Hold onto your joysticks, folks—Mumbai Comic Con 2025 is gearing up to be a high-score event! Forget Batman and anime cosplay; this year, indie games are the real superheroes. With the inaugural edition of Indie Game Utsav, the spotlight’s firmly set on made-in-India PC and console games. It’s time for homegrown games to finally drop the mic—or controller—in style.

Set for 12-13 April 2025, at Jio World Convention Centre, Indie Game Utsav brings together over 40 stellar indie games from India, ready to dazzle audiences at Mumbai Comic Con. Backed by big-hitters like Xbox, Xsolla, Specter, and Nodwin Gaming, the festival also boasts IGDA India as its community partner, making it a gamer’s paradise on steroids.

Given India’s surging gamer base—132 million on PC platform Steam alone and PC gaming contributing 22 per cent to India’s video game revenues—Indie Game Utsav is perfectly timed. It’s not just about showing off some shiny new pixels; it’s about nurturing India’s thriving PC and console gaming culture.

The brains behind this gaming extravaganza is Avichal Singh, makers of the smash hit Raji: An Ancient Epic. Singh explained, “Indie Game Utsav wants to pave the way for upcoming quality indie games from India to find success just like Raji, we are aiming to resolve long existing B2B and B2C problems for indies. I’m grateful for Nodwin’s support to help us celebrate India’s best and brightest indie developers at Mumbai Comic Con.”

Nodwin Gaming co-founder & MD Akshat Rathee echoed, “Nodwin started with two guys who just loved PC gaming, so supporting indie developers feels like coming full circle. We’ve always believed in the incredible talent of Indian indie game creators and that their work should be easily accessible to gamers. Indie Game Utsav at Comic Con is just the beginning—one of many steps towards making gaming more open and exciting for everyone.”

To help Indian games level up internationally, Indie Game Utsav is also connecting local developers with top-tier global publishers like Krafton, Garena, Epic Games, and more. On top of that, special digital meetups will see publishers such as Devolver Digital, Rawfury, and Plugindigital ready to scout the next big gaming sensation.

And that’s not all—various pre-event initiatives are lined up to sharpen the skills of indie devs, from intimate sessions with Rawfury and Epic Games veterans to casual mixers and global showcases through MGN Indie Game Events in China.

  • India plays its game at GDC – San Francisco developer conference

India plays its game at GDC – San Francisco developer conference

MUMBAI: India has levelled up its presence in the global gaming industry with its  pavilion at the Game Developers Conference (GDC) in San Francisco. The showcase, inaugurated by India’s consul general in San Francisco K. Srikar Reddy, puts the spotlight on the country’s burgeoning gaming sector and its ambitions to become a worldwide content powerhouse.

The India Pavilion features an impressive roster of exhibitors, including established players like Nazara Technologies and WinzO, alongside plucky award-winning upstarts such as Wala Interactive, Brewed Games, Xigma Games, and Singular Scheme. These companies are demonstrating that India’s gaming industry is no longer just pressing “play”—it’s pressing ahead.

Several champions of the “Bharat Tech Triumph Season 3” challenge are also showcasing their wares, including Yudiz Solutions, Brahman Studios, and the whimsically named Over the Moon Studios. The pavilion serves as a matchmaking service of sorts, connecting Indian developers with global publishers, investors and potential collaborators.

Beyond gaming, the pavilion is drumming up interest for the upcoming World Audio Visual and Entertainment Summit (Waves), scheduled for May in Mumbai. This flagship event, organised by the ministry of information and broadcasting through the National Film Development Corp (NFDC), aims to position India as the “Content Hub of the World”—a lofty ambition for a country already producing films and television at an industrial scale.

The timing could hardly be better. GDC, running from 17 to 21 March, attracts the crème de la crème of the global gaming industry. By planting its flag at this influential gathering, India is signalling that its developers are ready to play in the big leagues.

For a nation long associated with outsourced IT services, the pivot to creative digital content represents a strategic shift. India’s gaming companies are no longer content to be mere back-office operations—they’re designing the games, creating the characters, and writing the storylines that could captivate players worldwide.
As one industry insider quipped, “India has been the world’s back office. Now it wants to be its arcade too.”
