  • Law firm Nishith Desai & VC Tim Draper launch digital nation hackathon

Law firm Nishith Desai & VC Tim Draper launch digital nation hackathon

MUMBAI: The geopolitical map is getting a digital makeover, and it’s not just another crypto pipe dream. Silicon Valley venture capitalist Tim Draper and legal eagle Nishith Desai have joined forces to launch the e-Tibet Hackathon—an eyebrow-raising attempt to create the world’s first truly digital nation.

Unveiled in Bengaluru on 22 March, the initiative brings together coders, policy wonks and entrepreneurs to build what amounts to a nation-state that exists entirely in the cloud. One might call it governance without the geography.

Throughout history, humanity has continuously tinkered with the concept of statehood. The Treaty of Westphalia in 1648 gave us sovereign nation-states with their territorial obsessions. The Bretton Woods Conference in 1944 redesigned global finance while maintaining physical borders. Now Draper and Desai are betting that 2025 will be remembered as the year nations began to exist primarily as strings of ones and zeros.

The hackathon participants aren’t merely playing SimCity with higher stakes. They’re building blockchain-based governance systems, AI-driven legal frameworks, and smart contract public services. It’s like creating an entire government IT infrastructure, minus the government buildings and grumpy civil servants.

“We are witnessing a fundamental reimagination of governance and national identity,” gushes Draper Startup House founder Vikram Bharti. “Just as Westphalia formalised nation-states and Bretton Woods reshaped financial systems, Draper Nation is setting a new precedent, one that will outlive us all.”

Desai adds: “Traditionally, states are bound by geography, requiring physical land and territorial governance. But nations, built on shared values, culture, and identity, can transcend borders. This hackathon proves that digital nations can foster futuristic economic, legal, and social cohesion without physical boundaries.”

The choice of Tibet as the prototype for this digital experiment carries obvious political overtones, though the organisers have been careful to frame it as a technological rather than a geopolitical endeavour. China, which claims Tibet as its territory, may have thoughts on a virtual alternative popping up in cyberspace.

Whether e-Tibet will join the ranks of history-altering innovations or become another footnote in the long list of tech-utopian fantasies remains to be seen. But one thing is certain—the old adage about “no man’s land” might soon need updating to “no man’s bandwidth.”

  • Google’s AI arm gets new marketing muscle in Anuj Gulati

Google’s AI arm gets new marketing muscle in Anuj Gulati

MUMBAI: Google has appointed a new ringmaster to its artificial intelligence circus. Anuj Gulati, a 12-year veteran of the search giant’s marketing ranks, has been tapped as head of global growth marketing for Gemini, the company’s conversational AI platform that aims to give ChatGPT a run for its money.

Gulati announced his promotion on LinkedIn with the customary corporate humility: “I’m happy to share that I’m starting a new position as head of global growth marketing, Gemini at Google!” The exclamation mark suggests genuine enthusiasm—a commodity as rare in Silicon Valley these days as profitable startups.

The appointment comes at a crucial moment for Google’s AI ambitions. As the chatbot wars heat up faster than a neural processor under load, Gemini represents Google’s best hope of maintaining relevance in a world where users might soon bypass traditional search entirely.

Gulati brings a developer-focused pedigree to the role. He previously served as group marketing manager for developer growth and performance, where he led global growth, lifecycle and paid media marketing for Google’s developer products across mobile, web and the increasingly crowded AI landscape.

His career trajectory reads like a textbook case of corporate ladder-climbing done right. Prior to his developer marketing stint, Gulati spent nearly six years as senior product marketing manager for developer platforms based in Singapore, where he helped developers in India and southeast Asia “build great products and successful businesses” on Google’s ubiquitous platforms.

Before joining the Google mothership, Gulati cut his teeth at The Times of India, where as head of mobile products he claims to have increased mobile traffic sixfold in just 12 months—a performance that likely caught Mountain View’s acquisitive eye.

His CV also features a brief philanthropic interlude as head of marketing at Save the Children, sandwiched between stints at The Times of India, where he began his career as a brand manager after a short consultancy role at Tata Technologies.

As Google continues its desperate sprint to catch up with OpenAI’s head start, Gulati will need to draw on every marketing trick in his considerable playbook. For while Google may have invented much of the technology underpinning today’s AI boom, it finds itself in the unfamiliar position of underdog in the race to commercialise it.

Whether Gulati can help Gemini outshine its competitors remains to be seen. But one thing is certain: in the increasingly cutthroat world of AI, Google is gemini-ly serious about winning.

Her digital trajectory has been nothing short of meteoric, with previous roles including group editor digital at India TV and a similar position at Zee Entertainment.

The LSR graduate cut her teeth in broadcasting, having anchored India’s first Hindi breakfast news show Subha Savere for Moving Pictures  before diving headlong into the digital deep end. Her impressive CV boasts of transforming myUpchar.com as vice president and steering Jagran New Media as general manager and digital head.

During her six-year tenure at  Dainik Jagran  Cityplus, Sethi orchestrated an ambitious expansion, launching 48 editions across major Indian metros. Her digital acumen truly shone at OnlyMyHealth.com, where she catapulted user engagement to over five million visitors.

  • Wipro’s Srini Pallia brings in BPO veteran Kang; does business realignment

Wipro’s Srini Pallia brings in BPO veteran Kang; does business realignment

MUMBAI: In a bold corporate shuffle aimed at spicing up its business offerings, Wipro has appointed industry veteran Jasjit Singh Kang as managing partner & global head of its business process services  (BPS) division, effective 1 April.

The appointment, which adds another heavyweight to chief executive and managing director Srini Pallia’s inner circle, comes as part of a larger organisational makeover designed to seduce clients with more integrated, AI-powered solutions. Kang will report directly to Pallia and join Wipro’s exclusive executive board in what the company coyly describes as “a new position.”

Kang, who cut his teeth in the rough-and-tumble world of banking with stints at Citibank, Bank of America, and ANZ Grindlays, brings over 32 years of technology and business leadership experience to the role. He’ll take the reins of Wipro’s massive BPS operation, which employs a whopping 84,000 staff globally.

Before being wooed by Wipro, Kang played the field with leadership roles at Alight, Aon India, WNS Global Services, and GE/Genpact. His CV boasts extensive experience in BPO setups, mergers and acquisitions, and technology transformation projects that would make lesser executives blush.

The MBA holder from Central Queensland University also served as chairperson for Nasscom’s global in-house centres for the north India region, cementing his reputation as a player in India’s technology services scene.

Meanwhile, Pallia has also taken Wipro through  a management reshuffle which forms part of the company’s broader strategic realignment around four global business lines to cater to client needs better:

    * Technology services: Nagendra Bandaru will lead this division, focusing on cloud-enabled and industry-specific technology solutions including digital and industry cloud, cybersecurity, data, analytics, and AI.
    * Business process services: The freshly appointed Kang will steer this ship, concentrating on digital operations and business process transformation.
    * Consulting services: Under Amit Kumar’s stewardship, this division will provide strategic advisory and transformation services to clients thirsting for innovation.
    * Engineering: Srikumar Rao will continue to head this division, providing engineering and R&D services.
Meanwhile, Anne-Marie Rowland will maintain her grip on Capco, with no changes planned for this division.
Jo Debecker, who previously led Wipro FullStride Cloud, has decided to pursue opportunities outside the company, marking the only executive departure in this round of reshuffling.

“This evolution of our business lines will enable us to further sharpen our focus towards client needs with consulting-led and AI-powered solutions. This realignment will allow us to serve our
clients better, enabling us to deliver tailored, high-impact transformation” said Pallia, who took over as Wipro’s chief last year.

Industry analysts suggest the restructuring comes as tech consultancies worldwide feel the heat from generative AI, which threatens to disrupt traditional outsourcing and consulting models. With clients increasingly demanding integrated, outcome-driven solutions, Wipro’s reorganisation aims to position the company as a more agile dance partner in the rapidly evolving tech landscape.

  • Instagram may launch standalone Reels app to rival Tiktok

Instagram may launch standalone Reels app to rival Tiktok

MUMBAI: Instagram is reportedly considering launching a standalone app for its popular short-form video feature, Reels, as it seeks to capitalise on Tiktok’s uncertain position in the US market.

Instagram head Adam Mosseri recently shared this potential move with employees. The standalone Reels app would offer a dedicated video-scrolling experience, similar to Tiktok, as Meta looks to strengthen its foothold in the short-form video space.

This initiative follows Meta’s recent launch of edits, a video-editing app aimed at competing with Tiktok’s Capcut. The company had previously experimented with Lasso, a Tiktok rival introduced in 2018, but it failed to gain traction and was later discontinued.

While Meta has yet to confirm its plans, the move signals a renewed push to dominate the short-form video market, catering to users seeking engaging, fast-paced content on a dedicated platform.
