Online media professionals write to Smriti Irani expressing regulation concerns

MUMBAI: A group of more than 100 journalists and other professionals related to online media have written to the information and broadcasting minister Smriti Irani to express their concerns over the ministry’s proposal to extend traditional broadcasting rules and restrictions to the internet. The journalists include veterans of the industry such as Raghav Bahl, MK Venu, Madhu Trehan, Nalini Singh, Paranjoy Guha Thakurta, Shivam Vij, Sanjay Pugalia, Aniruddha Bahal and Raman Kirpal, as well as younger generation media entrepreneurs like Dhanya Rajendran (The News Minute), Seema Mustafa (The Citizen), Ritu Kapur (The Quint), Tanmay Bhat (All India Bakchod) and Bharat Nayak (The Logical Indian).

In their letter, the journalists and media professionals expressed concerns that bringing legacy media structures—such as licensing and content regulation—could have a drastic impact on a medium that is widely credited with making the media and information landscape more open and democratic across the world. “Internet-based media, by its very nature, promotes broader democratic values globally and cannot be dealt with in the way national governments try to regulate or control traditional media,” said MK Venu, founding editor at The Wire, a new-generation, online-only publication. “Internet-based media and global media aggregators like Facebook, Google have changed the content and distribution landscape in ways that national governments cannot easily control. Nor should they try to. It is a free democratic space and must remain as such,” he added.

Geeta Seshu, a journalist and a media analyst with a keen interest in freedom of expression issues, too called on the government to embrace the change the spirit of freedom brought about by the internet in media and communication sectors. “Today, digital media in India is evolving into a space, which allows for access to information, untrammelled by traditional gate-keeping structures and despite infrastructural limitations such as low broadband speeds or poor internet penetration,” she said. She expressed disappointment at the government’s attempt to ‘regulate’ online media by setting up a committee comprising mostly of government officials. “This committee hardly reflects the complexities of online media, much less represent all its practitioners,” she said. “Its mandate to regulate the dissemination of information smacks of the most alarming attempts to censor a burgeoning medium. It is ironic that one of the terms of this committee is to examine international standards when India is hailed for taking a strong and unequivocal stand on net neutrality,” she added.

Raghav Bahl, founder of Network18 and Quintillion Media, urged the government to look at the approach taken by other democracies in dealing with issues of online content. “Any hasty action by the government will likely result in overreach,” he said. “Therefore, we believe that the starting point for the government should be to study the global best practices for online content regulation. Many advanced democracies have already debated this and come up with good frameworks that ensure free speech and transparent regulation. No need to reinvent the wheel,” he added.

Journalist Madhu Trehan, the co-founder of NewsLaundry, one of the earliest digital news ventures, warned about the far-reaching impact that interfering with the citizens’ freedom of expression, online or offline, can have. “Regulating the internet is a tricky thing. Its impact is enormous and far reaching,” said Trehan. “The proposal to regulate (and its need at all) must be a consultative process in the most open and transparent way.” Seema Mustafa, founder editor of The Citizen, a news and current affairs website, warned that chances of ‘online content regulation’ being used for suppression of opinions critical of the government remain very high.
The journalists organised themselves using social media, particularly WhatsApp, spontaneously after news broke that the government had set up a committee to come up with a regulatory structure for online media “on the lines applicable to print and electronic media”. Over 100 journalists and professionals, including those from dozens of online organisations, signed the petition. A website, https://onlinefreedomfoundation.org, has also been set up to allow ordinary citizens to oppose the move to regulate online content.

  • Moneycontrol becomes India’s first financial platform to launch a dedicated section on Cryptocurrency

Moneycontrol becomes India’s first financial platform to launch a dedicated section on Cryptocurrency

MUMBAI: Moneycontrol, India’s leading financial platform, has introduced a dedicated section on Cryptocurrency, as discussions around virtual currencies gain prominence in India’s financial markets. By virtue of this move, moneycontrol becomes India’s first financial platform to offer an independent section on Cryptocurrency, which can be accessed via the moneycontrol website and app.

Ever since it started gaining attention in the global financial market about a year ago, the combined value of all cryptocurrencies has jumped from less than $18 billion to as high as $836 billion. A growth rate of 4,500 % over 53 weeks is unprecedented, when compared to say, broad-based S&P 500, which took decades to show a similar growth in value.

Given this background, moneycontrol intends to cater to the dynamic needs of its users by introducing a first of its kind Cryptocurrency section that can provide a macro picture on the topic, whilst providing clarity on the same. With Initial Coin Offerings (ICOs) being launched every week coupled with the growing interest from investors, both retail and institutional, moneycontrol has set up a neatly demarcated page that decodes the complex world of Cryptocurrencies in an easy to consume format. The section allows users to track prices of over 200 cryptocurrencies at one single place. Consumers can view the market capitalization of different cryptocurrencies everyday along with live updates on its trade volume.

Staying true to its style of encapsulating relevant information in engaging styles and formats, the new page reflects an attractive design with intuitive navigation. The space also offers the latest global news and articles covering all aspects of cryptocurrency including blockchain, digital payments and more. To keep the users updated and provide insights about cryptocurrencies in a friendly and captivating format, the page features engaging videos, infographics and educational content.

Network18 Digital Chief Product Officer Avinash Mudaliar said , “With the radical disruption that blockchain and cryptocurrencies have caused across sectors, moneycontrol intends to take a closer look at their potential for both, businesses and consumers. We are the first financial platform to roll out a section dedicated to cryptocurrencies, a decision that was arrived at based on the increasing demand for information in this space from the financial ecosystem. As we move ahead, we look forward to unlock as much value as we can in this space for our users.”

  • Google’s Web Rangers 3 to promote internet safety

Google’s Web Rangers 3 to promote internet safety

MUMBAI: Google has announced the third edition of its Web Rangers contest on children’s day. It is an initiative to spread awareness about internet safety and promote digital citizenship.

The competition aims to encourage teenagers to discover their hidden ninjas and unlock their creativity in highlighting the importance of cyber safety. After screening thousands of entries, the program will reward seven Web Rangers — who know all about staying smart, safe and savvy online.

Google director (trust and safety) Sunita Mohanty said, “With the Web Rangers contest, our idea is to promote safe use of the Internet among school students and create better awareness amongst the teenagers on how to be good digital citizen and staying safe online. We have seen an overwhelming response to our first two editions and the participation numbers are only growing. This year, we are ramping our efforts to reach more and more teenagers across India and will be hosting many online and offline events.”

The contest is open to students across the country within the age group of 10 and 17 years. Students can pick any one category.

    Details on the three categories:

Campaign: Run your own internet safety campaign, either individually or as a team of three. It could be one large initiative or a collection of multiple projects like a social media campaign, a video series, awareness drives or all of them – there is no restriction on the format or the number of initiatives.

Project: If you prefer to work individually and have that one amazing idea, then this is for you. The format is completely open – create a video, website, app or a game – but remember, it should empower users to stay safe on the Internet and learn what it takes to be a good digital citizen

Poster: Put your creative hat on – design a poster that captures the theme of Internet safety and send it across to us. It is as simple as that.

As part of its efforts to promote internet safety and digital citizenship, Google has been running programs to train student ambassadors and teachers across 5000 schools across states, covering topics like cyber-bullying, managing digital footprint, identifying fake content, dealing with online scams and more.

The deadline for submitting the entries is 23:59pm on January 15, 2018.

  • A year after demonetisation: E-payment services emerged winners

A year after demonetisation: E-payment services emerged winners

MUMBAI: 8 November 2016 was a day that took the world by storm. While the world was stunned with Donald Trump’s victory as the new US president, Indian prime minister Narendra Modi decided to give the country a shocker of its own- demonetisation.

An ordinary Tuesday evening saw all news channels and radio stations halt their programmes to listen to Modi, assuming it as another Mann Ki Baat. Instead, what followed was the shocking revelation that all the Rs 500 and Rs 1000 notes in the country will be invalid post midnight. As people scrambled to get rid of their notes and lined up for new ones, they were restricted to just Rs 10,000 a day and Rs 20,000 a week for the next 4 days (10-13 November).

A severe cash shortage in the hands of the public forced them to seek alternative modes of payment. Companies too weren’t spared. By the second week of demonitisation, cigarette sales had dropped by 30-40 per cent and cash on delivery (COD) orders fell by 30 per cent for e-commerce companies. Dabur India corrected its advertising spends for November by almost 50 per cent and many prominent brands decided to hold the rolling out of new campaigns for a few months. The festive October-December quarter, this year, ended up draining out over Rs 2000 crore.

Amidst this confusion and loss, if there was a clear winner, it was the class of startups offering online wallets and digital payments. Brands offering online payment ‘cashed’ out the most from the prime minister’s move. It was time for overlooked and unrecognised players like Paytm, Freecharge, Mobikwik, Swiggy, Zomato, Foodpanda and others to make optimum utilisation of the situation. These brands had found people’s Achilles heel and created campaigns, tweaking their communication, to show people that you don’t need to worry about less cash.

With this, digital payments became India’s new currency and debit card transactions surged to over 1 billion in January this year from 817 million last year.

    public://1_5.jpg

Foodpanda India co-founder and CEO Saurabh Kochhar says that there were positive implications of demonetisation on its platform. “Before demonetisation, on a regular day, our platform would receive close to 70,000 orders. While that shot up by 40-50 per cent, around 92 per cent of payments were made online after demonetisation. As our order value ranges between Rs 400-500, consumers did not mind paying online,” he reveals.

As consumers were forced to get acquainted with digital payment modes, they got comfortable with the idea of paying for their orders online. Brands ensured their technology backend could support the surge in payments so that no glitches would leave people harassed or with bad experiences.

One of the biggest beneficiaries of demonetisation was online wallet app Paytm. Within only 12 days after the move was announced, Paytm witnessed over Rs 7 million transactions worth Rs 120 crore a day and Rs 5,000 crore worth of transactions in the month of January 2017.

Even though India was cutting down on spending, online travel grew between November 2016 and June 2017. Indians spent $246.6 million in overseas travel-related payments in November 2016, up 581 per cent as compared to $36.2 million spent in the same month in 2015. Arrivals from India to Australia since the demonetisation period (Nov 2016 – Aug 2017) grew at an average of 15 per cent.

A year on, are people still transacting online at the same pace or was it just the momentary fluster? Kochhar optimistically says, “As valid currency got into a normalised flow in the country, there was an increase in COD orders. However, we have seen more uptake in users paying online for their orders. It is more about the change in the mindset of the users and demonetisation pushed them in that direction for sure.”

While demonetisation opened people’s eyes to digital avenues, adex was briefly hampered. Overall brand revenues fell and there was a clear dip in sale, but all of that is now in the past. The advertising and marketing industry revved up but was assured that India’s suspicious view towards digital had surely been changed.

  • 150 IoT start-ups in 3 cities in as many yrs: IAMAI, Napino tie up

150 IoT start-ups in 3 cities in as many yrs: IAMAI, Napino tie up

NEW DELHI: The Internet and Mobile Association of India (IAMAI) has teamed up with Mobile10X and Napino Auto & Electronics Limited to bring together startup entrepreneurs so that they can realise their true potential and evolve Internet of Things (IoT)-based ecosystem in the country.

Iot.IN is one-of-its-kind initiative and will invite nominations from IoT startups based in Delhi-NCR, Bangalore and Mumbai. It will provide mentorship, investment and partnership opportunities to the select startups. The focus of this initiative is to encourage young aspiring entrepreneurs to create innovative and disruptive solutions around the IoT, which will eventually align the government’s Smart India initiative with the vision of Digital India.

In the past two years, Napino has invested Rs 300 mllion in technology companies at different stages of business cycles. In the next two years, it will invest Rs 600 million and focus on next-generation tech companies in IoT, Blockchain, Big Data and Artificial Intelligence.

Napino director Vaibhav Raheja said: “We want to be at the forefront of innovation and have been continuously supporting entrepreneurs by providing business expertise, engineering and manufacturing support and industry connects. Despite a high rating on innovation and entrepreneurship, India attracts a meager share of VC funding in the world because of gaps in skills, scaling and business development models that entrepreneurs follow.” He said that Napino has five facilities to begin with for this programme.

To a question, he said that Napino was bringing in the hardware and the Cloud support in this programme.

‎‎Amazon Internet Services head – India Bikram Bedi who is a senior IAMAI member said the plan was to start at least 150 start-ups in the three targeted cities over the next three years.

About the help from the government, he said the government was helping individual programmes under the “Digital India” programme. He told indiantelevision.com that the programme would be publicised through the large number of members of IAMAI apart from alternative methodologies.

Bedi said: “We are headed to a completed connected world and this will soon be a nine billion dollar industry with shareholders among ISPs, TSPs, and others who could contribute to making India a hub for this sector.”

Through the iot.IN programme, Bedi said, they will be publishing white papers, building proof of concepts around segments which are central to the Digital India vision. The programme will focus on healthcare, automobile, agriculture, transportation, and smart cities. Going forward, the aim is to move into blockchain technology development, artificial intelligence, and also virtual reality.

He said consulting firm Deloitte estimates that India’s mobile data usage will grow to 1608 PB by 2020. 1 PB (or petabyte) amounts to 1,000 TB (terabyte) or 1 million GB (gigabyte).

IAMAI Startup Foundation’s Mobile 10X programme CEO Jitender Minhas said: “The Mobile10X programme has been striving relentlessly to provide a robust support system for app developers and young startups. I believe this joint effort will be a perfect complement and give a fillip to nurture dynamic startups. With many more such initiatives, we will see great products emerging from such programmes.”

Though he declined to give a definite figure, he told indiantelevision.com that a percentage of the Rs 600 million was being set aside for marketing.

He said initially, the start-ups will get a grant to launch their companies. As a part of the programme, startups will be provided technical, marketing and leadership skills along with financial support to build applications and businesses. They will also network with industry leaders, thought leaders, VCs, ecosystem evangelists and funders.

  • Cinépolis Ghaziabad introduces anti-piracy squad

MUMBAI: Taking a step towards addressing the problem of piracy in cinema & exhibition industry in India, Cinépolis movie theatre circuit recently announced the formation of anti-piracy squad at its Ghaziabad property. The squad at Cinépolis, Ghaziabad will be keeping a strict vigil using CCTV cameras & manual checks to thwart any attempt of illegal recording of movies within its premises.

The ease of access to technology has meant that over the years, piracy has become more rampant. Cinépolis India recently witnessed an incident at RED Mall Ghaziabad where a suspected pirate visited the cinema to engage in piracy. The suspect was spotted by the Anti-Piracy squad, nabbed & handed over to authorities.

This squad will patrol the cinema premises to keep a check, catch perpetrators in the act and hand them over to the concerned authorities. The squad comprises 3 people who will keep a manual check along with the security team who have been trained to identify special phones, camcorders or any equipment that might be used for piracy. Special CCTV cameras have been installed to enable on-screen monitoring and specialized equipment may also be used in the future to strengthen the process.

Cinépolis India director – strategic initiatives Devang Sampat said, “In recent years there has been a spike in unauthorized duplication of copyrighted content that is then sold at substantially lower prices in the ‘gray’ market. This is turning into a big issue for the cinema exhibition business as well. Committed to bringing a positive change in the industry, Cinépolis has introduced its first Anti-Piracy squad at Cinépolis, RED Mall, Ghaziabad, to keep piracy at bay within its premises. This is a first-of-its-kind attempt in the multiplex industry towards curbing piracy. We may introduce more squads across other properties if we identify any piracy related activity.”
