  • Stars N Stripes announces their new content publishing page

Mumbai: After a successful seven-year journey in the creative agency domain and having partnered with over 50 clients for their creative solutions, Mumbai based award winning agency Stars N Stripes co-founded by Rahul Sheth and Kunal Gavankar announce the launch of their new content publishing page- In The Air on Instagram which focuses on the topic of ‘Love.’

Launched in December, last year, the page was founded by Rahul Sheth, co-founder and business officer, and Kunal Gavankar, creative head and co-founder of Stars N Stripes. With a passion for spreading love and laughter, the duo saw a need for a platform that would showcase the lighter side of relationships and even offer people an opportunity to connect, share their experiences about love, and learn from one another.

While the central theme is love, In The Air offers a variety of content, including funny videos, memes, and jokes about relationships. The page is designed to be a place where followers can unwind, de-stress, and have a good laugh. Apart from videos, viewers can also browse through some inspirational quotes, personal stories, and even some interesting advice on building strong relationships.

“Love can be challenging at times, but it’s also a source of joy and laughter,” says Seth, adding “With this page, I hope to bring a smile to people’s faces and remind them that love can be fun and light-hearted.”

On the other hand, Gavankar states that they believe in creating relatable content that is very basic yet insightful and humorous. “The best thing about our content is that it is all spontaneous. The idea is to connect with today’s youth, who enjoy light and fun content. There is no blueprint or PPT’s happening in our office. It is just a group of like-minded people creating content for fun.”

In a short span of five months, the page has already gained an impressive following of more than 18K followers, with several reels and videos reaching over 2–3 million views. The engagement on the page has been exceptional, with over 4 million shares, likes, shares, and saves.

Talking about the positive response to their new initiative, Gavankar says, “As of now, we have posted more than 60 reels on the page and have received encouraging feedback. At Stars N Stripes, we are thrilled to see an overwhelming response to our new initiative, “In The Air.” We are excited to continue creating content that resonates with our audience. We invite everyone to join us on this journey of love and emotions.

Sheth explains that everything that is put out on the platform is curated in-house, “All the content that you see on the page is conceptualised, written, shot, directed, edited, and even the people who feature in it are all a part of Stars N Stripes. Once an idea is constructed, the team starts brainstorming the screenplay, which takes a lot of effort in order to create original content and dialogue. There are times when we shoot it but aren’t happy, and we go back to do it again.”

  • Govt. of India issues advisory to ICEA & MAIT to ensure inclusion of FM radio receivers in all smartphones

Mumbai: In an advisory issued by the Government of India, the Indian Cellular and Electronics Association (ICEA) and the Manufacturers’ Association for Information Technology (MAIT), have been urged to ensure the inclusion of FM radio receivers in all smartphones.

The advisory was issued by the IT Ministry, which stated that the move would enable easy access to FM radio services during emergencies and disasters, in addition to providing radio services to the poor.

The advisory urged mobile phone manufacturers to keep the inbuilt FM radio receiver function enabled and activated on all smartphones that are equipped with it. Additionally, if a smartphone does not have an FM radio receiver function, manufacturers are advised to include it.

The IT ministry has noted a ‘drastic fall’ in mobile phones with FM tuners over the last few years, which has negatively impacted the government’s ability to disseminate real-time information during emergencies and disasters.

The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) has also advocated the inclusion of radio in smartphones, citing the effectiveness of radio broadcasting in delivering early warnings and alerting the public during emergencies and disasters. The IT Ministry believes that FM-enabled smartphones can save precious lives and livelihoods, and prepare users to deal better with disasters by providing speedy, timely, and reliable communication.

The move is expected to benefit millions of people in India who rely on FM radio services for entertainment, news, and information, especially during times of crisis. It will also enable the government to reach out to people in remote areas during emergencies and disasters, where other forms of communication may not be accessible. The government has encouraged mobile phone manufacturers to comply with the advisory at the earliest to ensure the safety and security of the citizens of India.

The FICCI Frames EY report on Media & Entertainment for 2022 which was released in Mumbai at FICCI Frames 23 on 3 May, stated that radio segment revenues grew 29 per cent in 2022 to Rs 21 billion, but were still just 66 per cent of 2019 revenues.  Ad volumes increased by 25 per cent in 2022 as compared to the previous year, though ad rates remained 20 per cent below their 2019 levels.  Many radio companies are looking at alternate revenue streams to grow faster.

  • The Next Decade Will Belong to Indian Stories

Mumbai: Delivering a keynote address on ‘OTT: Powering India’s Storytelling and Creative Ecosystem’ at the FICCI Frames 2023 convention, Prime Video India country director Sushant Sreeram said, “The coming decade belongs to Indian stories, with streaming enabling expansion of linguistic palette and content diversity.” With this statement, he was referring to the fact that Indian content is being loved by critics and gaining fans worldwide, even as it continues to break new grounds within the country. He also emphasized the impact of streaming services on the Indian media and entertainment industry, noting their role in taking Indian stories to a global audience. By offering convenient and easy access to the finest Indian content, OTT players have made Indian entertainment accessible to viewers worldwide.

During the session, Sreeram highlighted that 25 per cent of the audience of Indian titles on Prime Video comes from outside India. Citing the recently released Amazon Original Series Farzi as an example, he stated that the show was released in 37 languages globally and streamed by viewers in 170 countries and territories over the launch weekend itself, in addition to entering the top 10 trending lists on Prime Video in multiple countries. He iterated that entertainment is now becoming borderless with streaming services like Prime Video expanding the linguistic palette of viewers. “Today, over 60 per cent of the customers on Prime Video stream content in 4 or more languages while 50 per cent viewership of local language content comes from outside the home states,” he said.

Sreeram also spoke about democratization of Indian entertainment. He said, “The entertainment industry in India has become a unifying force, bringing together different regions and cultures through the power of storytelling. It has also given storytellers the broadest reach to audiences within and outside the country. It has revolutionized the way content is created, accessed, and consumed, providing viewers with a diverse range of pan-Indian and global content. This democratization of storytelling has been gratifying to both witness and support.”

He identified three areas that will give further impetus to the growth of the Indian creative economy, with streaming acting as a #forceforgood for India. First, public-private partnerships will play a more pivotal role. Groundbreaking collaborations such as the recently announced collaboration between Amazon India and Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (MIB) to provide holistic support to Indian creators and talent, by way of exposure, skills and capabilities trainings, masterclasses, internships, and scholarships, are all critical steps in this journey. Second, alliances and accessibility are great accelerants to the creative ecosystem – be it through preferred devices, subscriptions, payment instruments, interface languages and such, or via deep alliances and collaborations among studios, creators and streaming services. Prime Video through Prime Video Channels and Prime Video Mobile Edition, in addition to the widest device coverage, ensures that customers can easily access their favorite content at their fingertips. Third, the rise in disruptive collaborations between storytellers across geos and cultures will further push the creative boundaries. The international Amazon Original spy-action thriller Citadel is a perfect example of this. It’s a global spy franchise with interconnected stories that traverse the world.

Summing up, Sreeram said, “The next 10 years will be the decade for Indian stories, Indian storytellers. Borders and languages are no longer a constraint. Great stories will find their moment under the sun. We are at the cusp of a breakthrough. We have already seen early signs of it with our run at the Academy Awards earlier this year. That’s just a precursor for us.” He further added, “At Prime Video, we have had a journey that has placed us as one of the contributors to the acceleration we have seen. Today, I call upon everybody across the industry to take big bets, grow this category responsibly, provide a platform to stories that are all around us and of course think customer backwards. Always believe that it’s still Day 1!”

  • Protecting the Music Makers: The Importance of Intellectual Property Rights for Music Creators

Music creators, like any other artists, invest their time, effort, and creativity in creating original works. These works can be in the form of lyrics, melodies, and literary and musical works related to music. Intellectual property rights protect these works, allowing creators to reap the benefits of their creative endeavours. Music Copyright Societies like IPRS which represents the authors, composers, and publishers of music, help to protect their intellectual property rights.

Copyright is the most crucial form of intellectual property protection for music creators. Copyright law gives music creators and publishers the exclusive right to control the use of their music, including the right to perform, reproduce, distribute, and create derivative works of their music. This means that no one can use, copy, or distribute their music without their permission. This protection allows creators to monetize their creativity by ensuring that they are fairly compensated for the use of their works.  Without these rights, music creators would have little control over their music and would be unable to earn a living from their creative efforts.

Intellectual property rights also provide an incentive for creativity. When creators know that their work is protected, they are more likely to invest time and resources in creating new works. This leads to a flourishing music industry and a diverse range of music for consumers to enjoy.

Unfortunately, piracy and copyright infringement remain major issues for music creators. Illegal downloading, file-sharing, streaming without permission, and non-compliance with music licensing norms can have a significant impact on the income of music creators. This not only affects their ability to earn a living but can also discourage them from creating new work.

Copyright also allows music creators and the rightful owners of music to license their work for use across various platforms and media, and generate royalties for such commercial utilisation. This creates new revenue streams for music creators and helps them to reach wider audiences. Copyright protection is crucial not just for established music creators but also for up-and-coming artists. Without copyright protection, emerging artists may struggle to get their work noticed and earn their due recognition and rewards. Copyright protection also promotes creativity and innovation. When music creators know that their work is protected, they are more likely to invest in new projects and take risks that can lead to new and exciting music.

In addition to copyright protection, music creators can also protect their intellectual property through trademarks, patents, and trade secrets. These forms of protection can help music creators to protect their brand and unique sound, as well as any inventions or innovations they may create. Overall, intellectual property rights are critical for music creators to earn a living, protect their work, and promote creativity and innovation in the music industry.

In India, the copyright law for music is governed by the Copyright Act of 1957, which has been amended several times to keep up with changing technology and practices. The Copyright Act protects musical works, lyrics, and sound recordings, among other creative works, and grants exclusive rights to the owners of these works. In 2012, the Copyright Act in India was amended to strengthen the protection of an author’s inalienable right to royalty. The amendment states that even if an author assigns or licenses their copyright to another entity, they are still entitled to receive royalty payments for the use of their work.

In a music-rich nation like India, music copyright societies like the Indian Performing Rights Society (IPRS) play a crucial role in protecting the rights of music creators and forming an effective bridge between the music creator and the music user. IPRS is responsible for collecting royalties on behalf of its members, who are composers, authors, and music publishers. These royalties are generated from various sources, including live performances, public places, commercial outlets, music streaming platforms, DSPs,  radio, telecom, and television broadcasts. IPRS ensures that the royalties collected are distributed to its members transparently and equitably, based on the usage of their music.

In addition to collecting and distributing royalties, IPRS plays an important role in monitoring the usage of music and ensuring that proper licenses are obtained for its use. IPRS helps music users legally play music, thus preventing copyright infringement and ensuring that creators are duly compensated for their work. In a nutshell, music copyright societies like IPRS are essential in promoting the growth and development of the music industry by protecting the rights of music creators and encouraging a fair music ecosystem.

The term of copyright protection for musical works in India is the lifetime of the creator plus 60 years after the death of the last creator. For sound recordings, the term is 60 years from the year in which the recording was first published. While registration is not mandatory to obtain copyright protection in India, music creators may register their works with the Copyright office. This can help them prove ownership and protect their rights in case of infringement. Authors, composers, and publishers are also required to register their correct and complete work details with IPRS so that IPRS can collect and pay the royalties to the rightful owner of the songs.

Though we have a strong copyright act in place, India faces major challenges in enforcing copyright law, particularly concerning online piracy and unauthorized use of music. There is a general lack of awareness among the public about copyright laws and the need to respect intellectual property rights. This leads to a culture of utilizing copyrighted materials without permission and payment. With the growth of the internet and digital technology, copyright infringement has become easier than ever. This has made it difficult for copyright holders to monitor and control the distribution of their works. India’s copyright laws have some provisions for fair use, which allows for the use of copyrighted material for purposes such as criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching, scholarship, or research. However, there is a lack of clarity about what constitutes fair use, which leads to confusion and disputes.

Creating music requires a significant investment of time, money, and talent. Music is a form of intellectual property, and just like any other form of property, it should be protected and valued. When someone listens to music without paying for it, they are essentially stealing from the music creator who created it.

The IPRS encourages fair pay and play of music by ensuring that businesses and individuals who use music for commercial purposes obtain the necessary licenses. By paying for music, we acknowledge the effort, creativity, and talent of those who create it while promoting talent and encouraging creativity.

We all must do our part in supporting the creators and rightful owners of the music. When someone uses music legally, they are paying for the right to use it and contributing to the fair compensation of the creators of that music. This, in turn, supports the continued creation of new music and sustains the music industry at large.

As a nation, we must take more proactive measures to uphold our copyright laws and have them enforced effectively. We seek help from the administration and government in this matter to protect the rights of copyright holders through proper enforcement of the law and help promote innovation and creativity.

As a Music Copyright Society representing over 10,000 leading creators and music publishers, IPRS works to promote and protect the intellectual property rights of music makers, through education, advocacy, and legal action. By supporting music creators and promoting the importance of intellectual property rights, IPRS helps to ensure that the music industry in India remains vibrant and creative and that music creators and publishers get the best returns from the music they make.

The author of this article is IPRS CEO Rakesh Nigam.
