Vishvas.news launches ‘Sach Ke Sathi Seniors’ against online misinformation

Mumbai: Jagran New Media’s internationally awarded and trusted fact-checking wing, Vishvasnews.com, launches “Sach Ke Sathi: Seniors”, a media literacy campaign to help senior citizens learn how to detect online misinformation, protect themselves from deepfakes and access trustworthy news and information.

SKS Seniors – the seventh edition of Jagran New Media’s flagship media literacy effort Sach Ke Sathi – has been launched by Vishvasnews.com in collaboration with MICA as its Academic Partner, and is supported by the Google News Initiative. Two other fact-checkers – Fact Crescendo, and News Meter have also joined hands with SKS Seniors as its language partners to take the initiative forward in local languages. The campaign focuses on imparting media literacy training to senior citizens, who are more vulnerable to false information and aims to impart skills to better navigate the digital information landscape.

SKS Seniors will go live in 50 cities, covering 15 states in seven languages and will host 70 training sessions – 40 on-ground and 30 online. In addition to this, SKS will also launch a first-of-its-kind micro-learning video course on media literacy and promote media literacy through its print editions.

Commenting on the launch, Jagran New Media CEO Bharat Gupta said, “The collaboration between Vishvasnews.com, Google News Initiative (GNI), the fact-checking community, and MICA fulfils our objective to address the critical issue of media literacy specifically within the senior demographic, with a focus on digital safety and fact-checking. Built upon shared synergy, the 7th edition of Sach ke Sathi will enable us to collectively prioritize the advancement of media literacy among seniors and create a robust foundation for a digitally literate society. It has been our endeavour at Jagran New Media to follow the principles of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) that underline our dedication to this important cause.”

Jagran New Media editor-in-chief Rajesh Upadhyay added, “We are thrilled to continue another chapter of Sach Ke Sathi and elevate the initiative’s standards by tailoring the approach to address many unique challenges faced by senior citizens in the age of misinformation, like limited digital literacy and fact-checking skills. The main focus is on providing senior citizens with essential tools and knowledge for awareness of digital safety and misinformation/disinformation through various training done by the fact-checking community and our academic partner, MICA. A well-devised communication and outreach plan has been implemented to ensure that the programme effectively reaches its intended audience, with a range of measurement approaches to assess the programme’s impact at various stages.”

Google News Lab lead in India Surabhi Malik said, “Sach ke Sathi Seniors is a much-needed collaborative media literacy effort that will empower senior citizens with critical thinking skills, help them detect misinformation and also prepare them to tackle deep fakes. Mis and disinformation is a serious problem that clogs the information pipeline and prevents the flow of trustworthy & authoritative information, which is all the more crucial during elections. We are proud to support this collaborative initiative that will help participants better assess the credibility of information available online.”

MICA associate professor, Head of Media and Entertainment Management Area and Centre for Media and Entertainment Studies (CMES) Santosh K Patra added, “As the academic partner of Sach Ke Saathi Seniors, we see it as an opportunity to address the issue of digital information literacy with Vishvas News. We have designed a curriculum by adopting an interactive and learner-centric pedagogy that not only imparts knowledge but also fosters critical thinking skills to tackle the challenges of fake news, misinformation, disinformation and misinformation which is prevalent like a menace in our society today.”

Sach Ke Sathi was launched in 2019 by Vishvasnews.com and Jagran New Media with a mission to combat the spread of misinformation and disinformation. SKS won Wan-Ifra’s Best Trust Initiative Silver Award in 2023 and IAMAI’s 2022 Bronze for best content campaign.

The previous six editions dealt with crucial subjects such as Health Fact Check, Bihar Elections, Yes for Vaccine, Assembly Elections 2022, FactsUp, and more. Over the years, Sach ke Sathi has achieved significant success in raising awareness about the societal effects of misinformation and fake news, as well as providing the tools and training needed to identify misinformation at a larger level.

MIPTV announces call for entries for the 2024 MIP SDG Award

Mumbai: MIPTV announced a Call for Entries for the 2024 MIP SDG Award, the annual honour established in association with the United Nations to recognise the contribution of companies and individuals within the international audiovisual sector to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Recipients will be presented live on stage in Cannes at the 61 editions of the spring international television market (8 – 10 April 2024).

Created in 2020 in support of the UN’s Decade of Action campaign, to which the SDGs are central, the MIP SDG AWARD provides an international platform to showcase how progress towards these goals can be accelerated on or off the air, through editorial, campaigns and business practices. Previous winners include A+E Networks, ACT, Junk Kouture, Sky, and last year’s recipients, acclaimed natural history producers Silverback.

Two awards will be presented in 2024, the MIP SDG Award, and the MIP SDG Innovation Award, the latter in recognition of originality in endeavour or action. For the first time, applications will be accepted from organisations or individuals whose activity delivers against one or more of the SDGs for either award. The seventeen SDGs encompass areas including the reduction of poverty and inequality and improvement of health and education, in addition to tackling climate change and the preservation of the planet’s oceans and forests. Submission forms including full criteria, terms and conditions can be found here.

The deadline for entry is 2 February 2024.

Selections will be determined by a jury comprised of social responsibility experts and representatives from RX France. The presentation of both categories will take place in a special session showcasing the recipient’s work within the conference programme at the forthcoming MIPTV market.

The MIP SDG Award forms part of RX France’s ongoing commitment to the United Nations’ SDG Media Compact. Founded in 2018, the alliance of media and entertainment companies now numbers over 450 members from 160 countries who pledge to leverage their respective resources to amplify and accelerate progress towards achieving the SDGs.

“Television inspires change like no other medium, and the need to accelerate change globally has never been more evident,” said MIPTV director Lucy Smith. “The MIP SDG Award  provides a platform to highlight purpose and ingenuity in these increasingly critical areas to an international audience of peers to then admire, learn from and emulate in their own way.”

United Nations Regional Information Center deputy director Caroline Petit added, “This MIP Award calls for more diversity in creative content related to the Sustainable Development Goals. It will encourage the international media industry to increase sustainable business practices on and off-screen. The MIP SDG Award will shed light on existing impactful media initiatives and audiovisual programming aligned with the global goals as well as inspire more companies and industry professionals to create attractive SDG-driven content.”

The three-day international MIPTV exhibition last year welcomed more than 5500 delegates from over 80 countries. The 2024 edition includes a pre-opening weekend (6-7 April) featuring extended MIPDOC and MIPFORMATS strands, creating ‘the biggest weekend in Unscripted’ in Cannes with documentary, factual and format communities gathering for two days of networking, screenings, showcases and deal-making. International Series Festival Canneseries will again run alongside MIPTV from 5-10 April 2024.

Key Insights from Manorama News’ massive ‘NavaKerala Manassu’ Poll

Mumbai: In a significant move towards understanding the pulse of the Kerala voters, Manorama News embarked on a significant undertaking by associating with Voter’s Mood Research for an extensive opinion poll ahead of the upcoming 2024 Lok Sabha Elections. With a mammoth sample size of 28,000 participants, this survey, known as ‘NavaKerala Manassu’ – which translates as ‘The Mind of the New Kerala’ – was the largest of its kind in Kerala, aiming to capture the detailed nuances of the current political mood. The performance of the state-central governments, the factors that could influence elections in the state and at the center, the performance of the Members of Parliament (MPs), and the chances of candidates in every constituency if elections were to happen now were all evaluated in this poll.

The participants of the ‘NavaKerala Manassu’ survey chose Rahul Gandhi as the most popular national leader, rated the Modi government’s overall performance as average, assessed the opposition’s national-level performance as good, and regarded the current performance of Kerala MPs as good.

The survey also predicted clear majority for UDF in 12 constituencies including Kasargod, Wayanad, Kozhikode, Malappuram, Ponnani, Chalakudy, Ernakulam, Idukki, Kottayam, Alappuzha, Kollam, and Trivandrum. They are also expected to win in Kannur, Alathur, Thrissur, Pathanamthitta, and Attingal despite a tough competition. UDF is leading in 17 constituencies in total.

On the other hand, LDF is expected to have a clear majority in Mavelikkara and is expected to win despite close contests in Vadakara, and Palakkad.

The vote share expected is as follows:

    UDF – 43.78%
    LDF – 37.47%
    NDA – 15.50%
    Others – 3.25%

The participants selected Pinarayi Vijayan himself as the preferred chief minister, evaluated his government’s overall performance as good, and appraised the opposition’s state-wise performance as good as well. The survey further concluded that the Bharat Jodo Yatra worked in favor of the Congress.

The survey was broadcast on television from December 11 to December 13, providing an engaging and informative spectacle for viewers. The panel was led by the prime anchors of Manorama News, including Johny Lukose, Shibu Joseph, Shani Prabhakaran, and Ayyappadas.

Manorama News has a track record of delivering accurate results, as demonstrated by its close alignment with the final outcomes in both the 2019 Lok Sabha elections and the 2021 and 2016 Kerala State Assembly elections. The channel’s commitment to precision and reliability positions this opinion poll as a benchmark for understanding public sentiment, setting the stage for informed and enlightened decision-making among voters.

Mumbai: Three Indian women have been included in this year’s BBC 100 Women list of inspiring and influential women.

For the first time, to recognise the disproportionate impact of climate change on the lives of women and girls, this year’s BBC 100 Women list specifically highlights a group of women leading the battle against the climate crisis.

By naming 28 climate pioneers from all corners of the globe, the BBC 100 Women list 2023 celebrates those inspiring and leading their communities to tackle and adapt to the devastating impact of climate change in their regions.

The announcement of this year’s list kicks off the BBC’s 100 Women 2023 season – focusing on women’s right and diverse life experiences around the globe, with special content including interviews, documentaries, features, digital and social journalism, across the BBC’s UK and global TV and radio services, BBC iPlayer and BBC.com.

The Indian women included in this year’s list are:

1   Dia Mirza, award winning actress from Indian cinema, who is involved in numerous environmental and humanitarian projects.

2   Harmanpreet Kaur, captain of the India women’s national cricket and the first Indian woman to be named as one of Wisden’s five Cricketers of the Year.

Arati Kumar-Rao, an independent photographer, writer, and National Geographic Explorer, who documents the changing landscape across South Asia, caused by climate change. One of BBC 100 Women’s 28 Climate Pioneers.

Jetsunma Tenzin Palmo, who was born in England in the 1940s, but became one the first Westerners to be ordained as a Tibetan Buddhist monastic after travelling to India at the age of 20, is also included on the list.

Other notable names from the BBC 100 Women 2023 list include former First Lady of the United States, attorney and campaigner Michelle Obama, footballer Aitana Bonmatí, human rights lawyer Amal Clooney, actresses America Ferrera, beauty mogul Huda Kattan, AI expert Timnit Gebru, campaigner Ulanda Mtamba, writer Oksana Zabuzhko and feminist leader Gloria Steinem.

Yet it is the new names that make the BBC 100 women list so unique. Among them are the 28 Climate Pioneers, announced to coincide with the 2023 United Nations Climate Change Conference, COP28, starting later this month in Dubai.

They include Paraguayan sprinter Camila Pirelli, South African freediving instructor Zandile Ndhlovu, Pakistani midwife Neha Mankani, Nigerian mental health advocate Jennifer Uchendu and Thai campaigner for indigenous and LGBTQ+ rights Matcha Phorn-in.

Other women celebrated for their work tackling the climate crisis in different fields, include Brazil’s state minister Sonia Guajajara, firefighter Sofia Kosacheva, and climate advisers Iryna Stavchuk and Christiana Figueres.

The season will look at the practice of child marriage, as 12 million underaged girls are forced into marriage every year. It will explore the spike in climate anxiety concerns with a data-led project, and hear from women whose reproductive choices have been impacted by environmental concerns. It’ll go on the road with Mexican truck drivers in a heavily male-dominated and dangerous business, and also travel up the mountains with a group of shepherdesses who brought wealth and transformed their community in less than a generation.

Alongside the list, BBC 100 Women will present a season of specially commissioned content and documentaries, featuring the untold stories of some of this year’s BBC 100 Women, including:

Now, three of the world’s most high-profile humanitarians have vowed to tackle the issue together. In a BBC 100 Women exclusive, Michelle Obama, Amal Clooney and Melinda French Gates talk about the work they do to combat child marriage and amplify the efforts of grassroots organisations.

The face of the women’s rights movements in the US during the 1970s and an icon of feminism, Gloria Steinem has spent the last 50 years focusing her efforts on advancing women’s political participation and reproductive rights. Her activism followed her career in journalism, where she was the co-founder of Miss Magazine, one of the first US publications to focus on women’s issues beyond the perils of housekeeping. Now at 89 years old, Steinem has sat down with BBC 100 Women to discuss how feminism has changed over the decades, the impact of cancel culture, and what the future might look like for women’s rights around the world.

    BBC 100 Women Documentaries

    Rising tides, shifting futures

With sea levels rising fast, women are leading grassroots efforts in coastal areas to help mitigate the effects of climate change. From Miami’s increasingly gentrified Little Haiti neighbourhood to the fishing villages of eastern Ghana and the outskirts of Cape Town in South Africa, BBC 100 Women meets the women at the forefront of the climate battle – working against the odds to secure a future for themselves and their communities.

A small-town troop of disabled children and women in Italy train hard all year and compete to find glory in the ring, doing gymnastics and coordinated dances on a horseback. But the rewards of the sport go well beyond the medals – as they work to deal with stigma and overcome their own fears, one pirouette at a time.

Clara, Liszy and Paty are breaking gender barriers in the male-dominated cargo transport industry – they are some of Mexico’s traileras, women truck drivers travelling distances on the country’s dangerous routes. Robberies and abuse are part of the hazards they face in the job – but the traileras are determined to overcome adversity. BBC 100 Women rides with them as they work to make a better life for their families and change the face of the next generation of drivers in Latin America.

Airs on BBC News on Saturday 16 December

    The Last Wakhi Shepherdesses

Deep into Pakistan’s Karakoram mountains lies the scenic Shimshal Valley, home to the Wakhi shepherdesses. Every year, over many generations, these women have taken their flocks to high pastures, where they prepare dairy products to barter while their animals graze during the warmer season. Their income has brought prosperity to the village and allowed them to build roads and provide an education for their children – but their tradition is about to end. BBC 100 Women follows the last shepherdesses on their journey up the mountains, on a dangerous trek 4,800m above sea level.

  • Moneycontrol’s Creator Economy Summit: Empowering Indian content creators for success

Moneycontrol’s Creator Economy Summit: Empowering Indian content creators for success

Mumbai: “Self-policing the finfluencer community would be the best for everyone,” Ananth Narayan, whole-time member of the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) said while speaking at the Moneycontrol Creator Economy Summit at Mumbai on Tuesday.

“If you want your community to gain, tell us what is going wrong. It gives us a lot of comfort to know that there is a community that is taking care of its problems,” Narayan elaborated saying that the finfluencer community is in the best position to show the bad apples in the industry.

Narayan said that finfluencers need to communicate and help the market regulator form better regulations. “Help us, come back with feedback. Refer to other jurisdictions and show us the way. Talk to us about how something can slip through the regulations and how we can prevent this,” he asked the finfluencers at the Moneycontrol Creator Economy Summit.

Even the market regulator can make mistakes and is not perfect, according to Narayan. “Regulators could make errors. First, we let bad things happen. The second error is getting in the way of good things happening, like making regulations so difficult that good people can’t do business”, he added.

Narayan reiterated that the market regulator is not going to baby sit investors and finfluencers and just wants finfluencers to provide quality education to investors. “Our job is not to create a nanny state. What I would love to see from content creators is high quality education. If you were advising your brother or mother, what advice would you give them? You wouldn’t worry about who is paying you. The best content comes from the industry itself. Things like education and capital formation are too important, and should not be left to the regulator alone” Narayan added.

When asked whether increasing taxation for derivative trading would be better like taxing gambling ads to discourage excessive trading, Narayan conceded that there is logic in the suggestion, but said that it is out of syllabus and not in his domain to make a decision.

Hosted by Moneycontrol, foremost financial news platform under the Network18 group, the Creator Economy Summit serves as the definitive platform for discussing vital issues in this sector, including challenges and the future landscape. The theme of this inaugural edition is ‘Creation, Innovation, Monetization,’ aimed at showcasing the optimism and resilience of Indian content creators.

  • Indian travellers drawn to Movie and TV locations: Skyscanner Survey

Indian travellers drawn to Movie and TV locations: Skyscanner Survey

Mumbai: Whether it’s gig tripping or visiting the realm of sleep, global travel site Skyscanner shares the latest trends shaping industry and traveller behaviour in its “Travel Trends: Redefining value through experience in 2024” report.  Blending proprietary flights and hotel data based on millions of searches with an annual consumer behaviour study and expert commentary, today Skyscanner reveals 2024’s hottest travel vibes and types, as well as the top 10 trending destinations and best-value destinations.

Data from the report reveals that film and entertainment have a significant influence on Indian travellers, with 94 per cent of them inclined to take a trip to a destination they’ve seen on the big or small screen. Moreover, close to half (43 per cent) of the respondents rate the overall ‘vibe’ of a destination as important, when choosing where to go in 2024.

Among the four key travel vibes, set-jetting took the lead in India, as travellers sought to immerse themselves into the iconic location of their favourite shows, embodying Main Character Energy. Seizing the spotlight as the top destination that Indians are inspired to visit in 2024 is Manali, India, with travellers influenced by Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani, followed by Ladakh, again in India, which inspires 47% of the travellers to visit the mesmerising city as seen in 3 Idiots. Claiming the next spot is London in the United Kingdom, with 43 per cent of Indian travellers seeking to add a royal flair to their life as seen in The Crown, and the enchanting city of Paris in France, with 42 per cent of Indian travellers wanting to experience the city like Emily Cooper, as seen in Emily in Paris. In fact, following the launch of season 3’s launch at the end of December 2022, Skyscanner saw a 23 per cent increase in searches from India to Paris in January compared to the previous month.

Just like Main Character Energy, Skyscanner data shows how the value of experiences is fuelling a range of other travel trends and vibes for 2024, with price no longer solely ruling decision-making:

. Gig tripping – One-third of Indian (37 per cent) travellers would fly short haul to see their favourite artist live with a huge 79 per cent considering attending a concert overseas instead in 2024 if it would help them save money.

. Budget bougie foodies – Indians are inherent foodies and Skyscanner’s research confirms the same, with 59% of Indian travellers having booked a destination purely based on a restaurant they want to visit. Osaka, renowned as ‘the kitchen of Japan’ with the fourth rank in the world for cities with the most Michelin stars, claims the top spot on Skyscanner’s global list for foodies on a budget in 2024 and is also one of the top trending destinations amongst Indian travellers.

. Destination Zzzz – Citing it as one of the top activities for their next holiday, Indian travellers just want to visit the realm of sleep in 2024. Sleep health generally is a hot topic and 85 per cent of Indian travellers are more mindful of their sleep health today compared to a few years ago. Moreover, 66 per cent of Indian travellers have reported experiencing improved sleep quality during their holidays.

What’s more, with the thirst for experiences that drive greater lifestyle value, Skyscanner sees these traveller types emerging in 2024:

. Analogue adventurers – In an age of always-on and constant hype, Gen Z are craving old-school analogue adventures that ditch the digital device in favour of how it used to be done. One in four (24 per cent) Indian travellers aged 18 to 24 years old now bring a Polaroid camera with them on holiday.
