JioGigaFiber: all you need to know

MUMBAI: With the launch of Jio back in 2016, business tycoon Mukesh Ambani reshaped the telecom business in India by disrupting the tariff charges. Riding on the popularity of his telecom venture, the Reliance Industry Limited (RIL) chairman now looks set to set off yet another price war. Addressing his shareholders at the company’s 41st Annual General Meeting, Ambani announced the launch of its fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) fixed line broadband service –  Jio Giga Fiber, the registration for which will begin on 15 August through the MyJio app and the Jio website.

“JioGigaFiber will be the largest greenfield fixed-line broadband rollout anywhere in the world,” said Ambani.

    • The initial roll out of the service will start from areas with maximum registrations. The company plans to target 1,100 cities.

    • Jio Giga Fiber service will be activated through a Jio Giga Router

    • Besides the basic internet service, Jio Giga Fiber will be bundles with a Jio Giga TV set top box, offering more than 600 TV channels as well as over 1000 movies with enabled voice command feature for TV

    • Another interesting feature is that of video calling through TV. Users can call any other TV connected through JioGigaFiber

    • Other amenities include multi-party video conferencing from the living room, voice activated virtual assistants, virtual reality gaming and digital shopping and smart-home solutions

“Gone are the days of Mbps, now it will be about Gbps,” said Isha Ambani at the AGM.

The company has rolled out a trial service offering of unlimited internet at 100 mbps for 90 days along with a monthly data quota of 100 GB for a security deposit of Rs 4,500 for the Optical Network Termination (ONT) device.  Those opting to disconnect the service will get a refund of the amount.

Anticipating another disruptive set of services from Jio, market leader Airtel has also set in motion the revamp its existing wired broadband connection solutions.
For the upcoming war with Jio, the telco has set aside Rs 24,000 crore for the financial year.

From current 89 cities, it wants to expand its service to 100 key cities targeting big data consumption zones. To cope up with competition, Bharti Airtel is also expected to bombard consumers with great offers.

It’s official! JioGigaFiber is Mukesh Ambani’s next big bet

MUMBAI: Mukesh Ambani’s Reliance Industries Ltd today announced what the country had been talking about in hushed tones till now: high speed fixed lined broadband services for retail customers. It’s called JioGigaFiber and initial target is 1,100 cities. The regisrations for the same will be open from 15 August on the official Jio website and the app.

“India ranks low in fixed broadband. The company has already invested more than 250 million dollars in the industry. We will now extend the service 1,100 cities to offer the most advanced fibre-based broadband services. This will mean a faster internet experience. A virtual reality experience for all citizens where you can control switches in your house from outside as well. This will redefine 24*7 emergency help for all homes across India. We are calling this the JioGigaFiber,” Ambani said while addressing the shareholders earlier in the day.

An updated version of Jio phone, called JioPhone 2, was also launched with added applications and functionality.

Isha Ambani said, “We are getting the three most popular apps, Facebook, Youtube and Whatsapp on the JioPhone.  JioPhone can send Whatsapp messages to other JioPhone users and other android and IOS users.”

Jio fixed line broadband service would come directly to customer homes, unlike in most cases where the fiber reaches only until the building and the last few meters of end connectivity is done using the traditional cable that drastically reduces the speed and user experience due to patches and inferior cable qualities of such patch up.

Keep tuned in for more updates.

JioFiber to take on DTH players

MUMBAI: December 2018 is the target that Reliance Jio has set for itself to launch its broadband services. According to a report in Digit, JioFiber will be launched in 20 cities initially with a minimum speed of 40 Mbps.

An optical network termination (ONT) box will be installed in the homes of users which can even handle IPTV requests. This means that Jio’s target is not just broadband companies but even DTH providers including Tata Sky, Dish TV, Airtel DTH, etc., as it gets ready to offer all-in-one bundled services.

The ONT box can be connected to a TV or any device. There are four LAN ports attached to the device. Subscribers opting for special plans can avail speeds of one Gbps. The pricing of the service isn’t yet known but it is expected that people will get unlimited packs like its current mobile phone schemes.

It will initially target tier I and II cities including Mumbai, Delhi, Kochi, Bhopal, Chandigarh, etc before it moves into other towns.

In its FAQs, the company boasts of the superiority of JioFibre by stating that the connectivity will be till each house ensuring high speed internet while other companies only provide fibre till the building after which traditional cable is used to reach every house thereby reducing the speed and causing frequent disturbances. It goes on to say that the fibre network need not be changed after the first installation since the company will ensure upgradation with latest technology that will create electronic light pulses.

India gets its own IPR mascot ‘IP Nani’

MUMBAI: India’s intellectual property (IP) mascot – IP Nani – was launched by Commerce and Industry minister Suresh Prabhu over the weekend.

Speaking on the occasion, Prabhu said that the protection of IP rights (IPR) is critical for building a knowledge-based society adding that mere legal provisions are not sufficient for its protection but their strict implementation is equally required. He underlined that piracy is a serious crime which should not go unpunished. He even called for creating awareness against stealing IPR and stressed on the need for participation of society in the effort.

Mascot IP Nani is a tech-savvy grandmother who helps the government and enforcement agencies in combating IP crimes with the help of her grandson ‘chhotu’ aka Aditya. The IP mascot will spread awareness about the importance of IPRs among people, especially children, in an interesting manner.

This character is also in line with the World Intellectual Property Organisation’s campaign for the World IP Day which celebrates the brilliance, ingenuity, curiosity and courage of the women who are driving change in our world and shaping our common future. It also highlighted that how a strong IP system can support innovative and creative women.

The Cell for IPR Promotion and Management (CIPAM), a professional body under the Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion collaborated with the European Union Intellectual Property Office to produce a series of animated videos on IPRs for children with IP Nani as the central character.

CIPAM has been conducting IPR awareness workshops for school students since April 2017. For the first time ever IPRs have been exclusively included in the NCERT textbook for class 12 school syllabus. These efforts are aimed at inspiring the next generation of creators and innovators to become proud IP owners.

  • Reliance Jio ready to disrupt wired broadband: Matthew Oomen

Reliance Jio ready to disrupt wired broadband: Matthew Oomen

MUMBAI: There’s further disruption coming thanks to the Reliance Jio juggernaut. Reliance Industries chairman Mukesh Ambani has said this time and time again for the mobile space where price wars have seen call and data prices plummeting, making consumers rub their hands in glee.

And now this was reiterated by Reliance Jio president network, global strategy and service development Matthew O Oommen, according to a report on telecoms.com of his key note address at the Big Communications Event in Texas earlier this week. Said he: “ We disrupted the mobile industry and now we are looking further. India and Jio are just getting started.”

The “further” he is referring to is wired broadband services to the home as well as to business customers. Its aggression in the telecom space has seen it snare 186 million subscribers for its 4G services who accounted for 372 billion minutes of VOLTE calls (in Q1 of this year) and 2.4 billion hours of video each month.

Ambani has set an even more ambitious target: that of an overall 500 million subscribers for its video-centric network.

But it has set its sights on shaking up the broadband FTTH and enterprise solutions segment as well. Just like it is doing in the 4G space where it is driving innovation in pricing, delivery and product. Tests have been on in different cities for its FTTH service with select residential and enterprise customers.

Oommen, during his keynote in Texas, said that the Reliance Jio philosophy is disrupt or be disrupted and that both segments are relatively under-served. There are just18 million broadband residential customers and the enterprise market is just one fifth of the size it could be, he shared in India, he stated, according to telecoms.com.

He also proudly claimed that FTTH will also see innovation as has been evidenced in the wireless segment with its MyJio app which has had 150 million downloads, with the JioTV service signing up 100 million subs and JioChat 50 million. Among the other services figure: JioBank, JioHealthHub and JioMusic which is slated to get a pump up with the acquisition of global Indian music leading streaming music service Saavn.com.

  • DoT addresses broadband issues in policy out for public consultation

DoT addresses broadband issues in policy out for public consultation

MUMBAI: The Indian government is exploring renaming/replacing the National Telecom Policy (NTP) 2018 as the National Digital Communications Policy, which will aim to have increased synergies amongst ministries of telecom, IT and I&B.

What the new draft policy, seeking public comments, does not look at is trying to make TRAI the converged regulator as had been suggested by TRAI in its feedback to the government on formulation of NTP 2018.

Some of the important recommendations are:

“Leveraging existing assets of the broadcasting and power sector to improve connectivity, affordability and sustainability”

“Strengthening Satellite Communication Technologies in India
    (a) Review the regulatory regime for satellite communication technologies, including:

    i. Revising licensing and regulatory conditions that limit the use of satellite communications, such as speed barriers, band allocation, etc.
ii. Simplifying compliance requirements for VSAT operators to ensure faster roll out
iii. Expanding scope of permissible services under the Unified Licensing regime using High Throughput Satellite communication systems

    (b) Optimise Satellite communications technologies in India, by:

    i. Reviewing SATCOM policy for communication services, along with Department of Space, keeping in view international developments and social and economic needs of the country
ii. Making available additional transponders and new spectrum bands (such as Ka band) for satellite-based commercial communication services
iii. Rationalizing satellite transponder, spectrum charges and charges payable to WPC
iv. Assessing the bandwidth demands across various spectrum bands used for satellite communications, in consultation with stakeholders
    v. Prioritising international engagement with ITU on spectrum management issues, specifically with respect to satellite communications in India

    (c) Develop an ecosystem for satellite communications in India, with focus on:

    i. Streamlining administrative processes for assignment and allocations, clearances and permissions related to satellite communication systems
ii. Promoting local manufacturing and development of satellite communications related infrastructure through appropriate policies
iii. Promoting participation of private players, with due regard to national security and sovereignty”

“Enabling Infrastructure Convergence of IT, telecom and broadcasting sectors:

    i. Amending the Indian Telegraph Act, 1885 and other relevant acts for the purpose of convergence in coordination with respective ministries
ii. Establishing a unified policy framework and spectrum management regime for broadcast and broadband technologies
iii. Restructuring of legal, licensing and regulatory frameworks for reaping the benefits of convergence”

“Enabling unbundling of different layers (e.g. infrastructure, network, services and applications layer) through differential licensing”

“Fostering an Intellectual Property Rights regime that promotes innovation, by:

    i. Implementing key recommendations in the National IPR Policy pertaining to Digital Communications, including a review of the legal regime around copyright, patents and trade marks
ii. Assisting start-ups in filing copyright, patent and trademarks applications
iii. Providing financial incentives for the development of Standard Essential Patents (SEPs) in the field of digital communications technologies
iv. Promoting Indian IPR through international collaborations and active participation in standard development processes and IPR related events”

“Recognising the need to uphold the core principles of net neutrality:

    i. Amending the license agreements to incorporate the principles of non-discriminatory treatment of content, along with appropriate exclusions and exceptions as necessary
ii. Ensuring compliance with net neutrality principles, by introducing appropriate disclosure and transparency requirements”

There are three aims- first is to connect India digitally, second is to propel India by using technologies like 5G, AI and IoT and third is to secure India which will enable the security of people’s privacy, security, data etc.

After the Facebook-Cambridge Analytica scandal, the government will amend licences and terms and conditions to incorporate provisions for privacy and data security.

This apart, the government aims to establish five million public wi-fi spots by 2020 and 10 million by 2022. It will also amend the Indian Telegraph Act to converge IT, telecom and broadcasting sectors.

The government will re-look at the fees it levies at various places to enable investment of $100 billion in the digital communications sector. It will also revisit spectrum usage charges where telecom providers currently pay 3-6 per cent of adjusted gross revenue as fees. Licence fee is 8 per cent of the same.

The Telecom Commission has also accepted the recommendations of the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India regarding a new framework for public data offices for setting up public wi-fi hotspots where people can purchase telecom or internet services in sachet-sized packets starting at Rs 2.

MUMBAI: Government-run telecommunications company Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL), which markets its broadband service as Data One, is talking to Greg Wyler’s proposed OneWeb satellite constellation about leasing capacity, according to Advanced-television.com.

The plan is reportedly to “revolutionise” India’s broadband coverage by taking capacity from Japanese media conglomerate SoftBank, which is backing OneWeb. BSNL has reportedly signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with SoftBank.

BSNL is quoted as being extremely enthusiastic about the prospects with chairman Anupam Shrivastava saying: “OneWeb is a newly conceived idea. SoftBank is coming up with 850 LEO satellites to cover every nook and corner of the earth with each satellite facing a land mass every time.” He added that: “If it succeeds, it has the potential to disrupt all telecom service providers worldwide. Jio shifts focus to wired broadband

MUMBAI: After bringing about a massive change in the usage of wireless internet and market dynamics, Reliance Jio is looking at the broadband or wired internet sector. According to a media report, Jio is working at full steam to launch broadband in homes towards the end of this year.

Jio’s success in wireless internet with 168 million subscriber base is unquestionable. For the launch of the broadband service, the company has already started beta trials across some locations in country along with offering free broadband across regions in New Delhi and Mumbai. The trial service is offering unlimited internet at 100 mbps for a security deposit of Rs 4,500.

“The full-fledged commercial launch is likely to be announced on 28 December, which happens to be late Dhirubhai Ambani’s birthday,” a person familiar with the development was quoted by Livemint in its report.

A TRAI report earlier said that India had only 21.28 million wired internet subscribers compared with 424.67 million wireless internet subscribers in 2017. The major player in the segment is BSNL followed by Bharti Airtel. The low number of wired internet users leaves a big scope for Jio’s upcoming business. Airtel, Jio’s main competitor, provides high-speed wired broadband across 89 cities in India.

While big players are chasing metro cities, cable TV distribution company DEN Networks Ltd has shifted its focus to small towns.

“The tariff and stress of telcos is, as of now, focussed on the main metros. So we have made the game plan for tier 2 and tier 3 cities. We don’t want to be trapped in this (the war between telcos),” DEN Networks chief executive officer SN Sharma said.
