  • Q2-16: DISH Network reports 27% profit hike, loses 281K pay-TV subscribers

Q2-16: DISH Network reports 27% profit hike, loses 281K pay-TV subscribers

BENGALURU: DISH Network Corp. (DISH) reported 26.52 percent increase in its net profit for the quarter ended 30 June 2016 (Q2-16, current quarter) at $ 410.46 million as compared to $ 324.42 million in the corresponding year ago quarter. Despite activating approximately 527,000 gross new pay-TV subscribers, net pay-TV subscribers declined approximately 281,000 in Q2-16. Comparatively, in Q2-15 approximately 638,000 gross new pay-TV subscribers were added with a net loss of approximately 81,000 pay-TV subscribers.

DISH reported almost flat revenue (grew by 0.12 percent) in the current quarter of $ 3,837.04 million as compared to revenue of $ 3,832.29 million in Q2-15. Subscriber related revenue in Q2-16 grew 0.7 percent to $3,826.22 million as compared to $3,801.42 million in Q2-15.

EBIDTA in Q2-16 declined slightly (2.7 percent) to $ 899.54 million from $ 924.45 million in the corresponding year ago quarter.

    Subscribers, ARPU, SAC

The company closed Q2-16 with 13.593 million pay-TV subscribers, compared to 13.932 million pay-TV subscribers at the end Q2-2015.

DISH lost approximately 15,000 net broadband subscribers in the second quarter, bringing its broadband subscriber base to approximately 613,000.

Pay-TV ARPU for Q2-16 totalled $89.98, compared to Q2-2015 pay-TV ARPU of $ 87.91. Pay-TV subscriber churn rate in the current quarter was higher at 1.96 percent versus 1.71 percent for Q2-2015.

Pay-TV subscriber acquisition cost (SAC) in Q2-16 was $353.08 million as compared to $ 405.70 million in Q2-15.  Pay-TV SAC was $782 per subscriber during Q2-16 compared to $767 during Q2-15 an increase of $15 or 1.9 percent.

DISH says that this change was primarily attributable to an increase in advertising costs per activation, partially offset by a decrease in hardware costs per activation. The decrease in hardware costs per activation was primarily due to a higher percentage of remanufactured receivers being activated on new DISH branded pay-TV subscriber accounts and by a reduction in manufacturing costs related to certain receiver systems. This decrease was partially offset by an increase in the percentage of new DISH branded pay-TV subscriber activations with Hopper 3 receiver systems, which have a higher cost per unit than the prior generation Hopper receiver systems.

    Notes

It may be noted that DISH includes all of its Sling TV subscribers in the company’s total pay-TV metrics, including in the pay-TV subscriber, pay-TV ARPU and pay-TV churn rate numbers set forth below. Sling TV subscribers are reported net of disconnects in DISH’s gross new pay-TV subscriber activations. The Sling branded pay-TV services consist of, among other things, live, linear streaming over-the-top (OTT) internet-based domestic, international and Latino video programming services.

DISH markets broadband services under the dishNET™ brand in the United States.  In addition to the dishNET branded satellite broadband service, DISH also offers wireline voice and broadband services under the dishNET brand as a competitive local exchange carrier primarily to consumers living in a 14-state region in the western United States.  It primarily bundles dishNET branded services with its DISH branded pay-TV service.

During Q1-2016 DISH made its next generation Hopper, the Hopper 3, availableto customers nationwide.  Among other things, the Hopper 3 features 16 tuners, delivers an enhanced 4K Ultra HD experience, and supports up to seven TVs simultaneously says the company.

However, quarter-over-quarter (q-o-q), revenue for the current quarter declined 35 percent from Rs 93.75 crore in Q4-16. The company attributes the increase in revenue to sale of setup boxes/ broking income/ income from trading of securities.

The company reported a year-over-year (y-o-y) growth in profit of 1.3 percent for the current quarter at Rs 24.21 crore as compared to Rs 23.90 crore and a 70.8 percent q-o-q growth as compared to Rs 14.18 crore.

HVL operates across three segments of media and communication, real estate, and investment and treasury. HVL is the holding company of integrated media companies IndusInd Media and Communications Limited (IMCL) and Grant Investrade Limited (GIL), which has launched the headend-in-the-sky (HITS) digital platform under brand name NXT DIGITAL.

    HVL’s media and communications segment

Revenue from its media and communications segment declined q-o-q to less than a fourth (down 76.6 percent). HVL reported revenue of Rs 14.40 crore in Q1-17 and Rs 61.69 crore in Q4-16. The segment reported an operating loss of Rs 5.61 crore in the current quarter as compared to an operating loss of Rs 0.37 crore in Q1-16 and an operating profit of Rs 2.71 crore in Q4-16. HVL to invest Rs 271 crore for stake in IMCL

HVL proposes to purchase 43,03,000 equity shares of Rs 10 each for a premium of Rs 456 per share of its subsidiary IMCL.
This stake purchase, which constitutes 5.82 percent of IMCL’s paid up equity capital, will cost HVL Rs 200.52 crore. HVL also proposes to buy 7,03,60,0000 IMCL preference shares of Rs 10 each at par from its wholly owned subsidiary shares of GIL. The IMCL stake purchase from GIL constitutes 26.02 percent of paid up preference capital of IMCL and will cost HVL Rs 70.36 crore.

GIL to de-merge HITS to IMCL

GIL will de-merge its HITS business undertaking to IMCL, the HVL board has decided. The scheme is subject to consent(s), approval(s) permission(s) of statutory authorities(s) if any, including, in particular, the approval from the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (MIB), Government of India for transfer and vesting of HITS License held by GIL in favour of IMCL.

HVL says that India is yet to witness a genuine and significant revolution in the digital delivery in true sense, especially in tier 3 and 4 cities and rural hinterland.

The digitalization with many upcoming value added services of over 160 million (16 crore) TV homes is still far from over. It is envisaged that the combined strength of fibre based digital cable delivery and the satellite based digital signals for cable industry will enhance and create a new paradigm in the digital content delivery platform in terms of reach, value for money, state of the art technology, quality of services and significant value added digital services.

The company also feels that this will further enhance shareholders value by consolidating the digital media distribution businesses and will help to rationalize the group structure by optimizing the resources and integrating operational synergies both in revenue and costs.

The combined entity will also be able to venture and grow in the newer areas and many digital technology-linked value-added services that would be relevant for this business and same set of customers.
According to HVL, its broadband business has also been restructured for a direct focus and is planned for a manifold technology-based growth.

The synergy will be able to consolidate HVL’s media investments and would  enhance and maximize the shareholders value, avers the company.

GIL’s (HITS business) merger into IMCL will be a unique first in the country in digital cable and has a long term positive financial implication by increasing competitive strength, technology synergies, customer service efficiency and high productivity with a genuine all-India reach. HVL says adding that similar models in developed countries have witnessed a prime leadership position in mid to long term.

The company states that this arrangement will also strengthen HVL’s investment in media business, which will, in turn, unlock the value of HVL’s shareholders.

Average voice usage per month is over 355 minutes. The test program will be progressively upgraded into commercial operations in coming months says RIL.

RIL chairman and managing director Mukesh Ambani said, “At Reliance Jio, we have built an entire ecosystem that will allow Indians to live the digital life to the fullest. This transformational ecosystem consists of broadband connectivity, devices and powerful applications and services which will be available to every consumer in India.”

    RIL numbers

For Q1-17, RIL achieved a turnover of Rs 71,451 crore ($ 10.6 billion), a decrease of 13.4 percent, as compared to Rs 82,509 crore in the corresponding period of the previous year. The company says that decline in revenue was led by the 26 percent y-o-y decline in benchmark (Brent) oil price which averaged at $ 45.6/bbl (bbl is oil barrel) in Q1-17 as compared to $ 61.9/bbl in the corresponding period of the previous year. Impact of lower prices was partially offset by higher volumes in refining and petrochemicals segments.

Profit after tax including exceptional items was higher by 18.1 percent at Rs 7,113 crore ($ 1.1 billion) as against Rs 6,024 crore in the corresponding period of the previous year.

Said Ambani, ““At Reliance, we continued to harness the power of our integrated energy and materials business portfolio. We maintained our earnings growth trajectory during this quarter, as the world grappled with new dimensions of economic uncertainty. Though regional refining margins trended downwards, our high-conversion refining system was able to take advantage of higher margins on middle distillates and wider discounts on sour crude oils. Our refining business delivered another record performance and achieved industry leading GRM (gross refining margin). Our petrochemicals business has a wide product portfolio, superior feedstock linkages and serves high-growth end-markets in India. As a result, we achieved yet another quarter of margin expansion in petrochemicals business and delivered EBIT growth of more than 20.5 percent y-o-y.”

RIL innovates; to live stream Q1-2016-17 results on FB, Youtube, Periscope

MUMBAI: When you are a company that generates Rs 1,000 crore a day in revenue, you have to do things in style right? We are referring to the Mukesh Ambani group company Reliance Industries Ltd (RIL).

It is touting a first for a global company as it gets ready to stream live its CFO’s Alok Agarwal’s analysis of its Q1-2016-17 results from a single axis (read a camera) over Youtube, Twitter’s Periscope and Facebook Live today. In most cases in the past, companies have streamed an event live on one of the three platforms but using different cameras.

Says a company official: “Three cameras means three different angles for three different platforms. And an individual can look at only one camera at a time which means that somewhere or the other it appears as though he is not addressing people.”

Apparently, RIL has technically innovated to have one video out from a single camera and distributing it to the three outlets with the help of a switcher.

The test signal of the feed was seen on the verified Facebook page of RIL president and media director Umesh Upadhyay, the company’s Twitter feed called @FlameOfTruth and its YouTube landing, @flameoftruth2014.

The company had streamed its results announcement live on Facebook in January 2016 with Agarwal holding forth on its Q3 2015-16 results. It then added Periscope to communicate its Q4 2015-2016 results.

Now it has taken the step to simulcast the live stream on all the three digital platforms for its Q1 2016-2017 financials.

“We are where the sophisticated consumer of media and stakeholders are, spread across different geographies and time zones ” an RIL official confirmed, requesting not to be named.

A promo announcing this LIVE feed has already attracted 4.14 lakh reach, 1.03 lakh views, 2,300 likes on Facebook alone.

RIL has more than 3 million shareholders. Even if 10 per cent of them log onto the live stream, that will be equal to the audiences that some TV shows get.

Now if cable TV operators choose to stream this to their subscribers that could mean even more reach for RIL.
