    Q2-17: Dish TV adds 2.59 lakh subscribers

    BENGALURU: Indian direct to home (DTH) company Dish TV India Limited (Dish TV) has reported growth across important financial and operational parameters including operating revenues (TIO) , EBIDTA and subscription numbers. The company reported addition of 2.59 lakh net subscribers for the quarter ended 30 September 2016 (Q2-17, current). It closed the quarter with 151 lakh subscribers. Average revenue per user (ARPU) for Q2-17 was Rs 162 in the current quarter versus Rs 161 in the corresponding year ago quarter..

    Dish TV reported 11.9 per cent higher y-o-y subscription revenue of Rs 728.8 crore for Q2-17, as compared to Rs 651.4 crore. Operating revenue in the current quarter increased 9.6 per cent y-o-y to Rs 779.6 crore from Rs 711.2 crore in the corresponding quarter of the previous year. (Refer Note 2.1 and 2.2 below)

    Segment Revenue

    Three segments contribute to Dish TV’s numbers – DTH; Infra Support Services; and ‘Others’.

    DTH segment revenue in Q2-17 declined 14.2 per cent to Rs 509.55 crore from Rs 594.16 crore in Q2-16. The segment reported 15.5 per cent lower operating profit in the current quarter at Rs 86.43 crore as compared to Rs 102.24 crore in the corresponding year ago quarter.

    Infra Support services segment reported 13.7 higher y-o-y revenue of Rs 280.65 crore in Q2-17 vis-à-vis Rs 246.91 crore in Q2-16. The segment’s operating profit declined 39.3 per cent in the current quarter to Rs 12.30 crore from Rs 20.26 crore in the corresponding year ago quarter.

    ‘Others’ segment revenue increased 3.5 per cent in Q2-17 to Rs 5.59 crore from Rs 5.40 crore in Q2-16. The segment’s operating profit grew 5.3 per cent in the current quarter to Rs 2.80 crore from Rs 2.6 6 crore in Q2-16.

    A look at the other numbers reported by Dish TV

    Dish TV reported PAT of Rs. 70.1 crore in Q2-17, down 19.4 per cent as compared to Rs 87 crore in Q2-16.

    EBIDTA in the current quarter increased 3.6 per cent to Rs 264.2 crore from Rs 255 crore in Q2-16.

    Expense in the current quarter increased 12.9 per cent y-o-y to Rs 51.51 crore from Rs 456.2 crore. Employee Benefits Expense increased 23.1 per cent y-o-y to Rs 36.4 crore from Rs 29.58 crore. Other operating expenses in the current quarter declined 30.8 per cent to Rs 70.14 crore from Rs 101.30 crore in Q2-16..

    Licensing fees in the current quarter increased 1.3 per cent to Rs 54.52 crore from Rs 53.81 crore in Q2-17. Programming/Content and other costs in Q2-17 increased 17.4 per cent to Rs 238.92 crore from Rs 203.54 crore in Q2-16.

    Dish TV managing director Jawahar Goel said, “Torrential rains in many parts of the country often force consumers to defer buying a new DTH connection while the existing ones may delay recharging if the going gets too tough. Both sales and recharge however normalize subsequently if the festival season hits early. Targeting phase 3 & 4 markets, our subscriber additions during the quarter remained in-line with expectations.”

    Expressing his views on the regulatory developments, Goel, said, “While the draft Regulations have been formulated with an intention of subscriber welfare, there are certain omissions, optimistic presumptions as well as unanswered questions that would hopefully be addressed once the final orders see the light of the day. We appreciate the spirit of transparency and non-discrimination that have been the guiding force behind these draft orders and hope that DTH would soon get the level playing field that it has been seeking. Restrictions placed on carriage fees should go a long way in correcting the industry macro environment.”

    “We continue to remain positive about other regulatory interventions including the proposed new license regime for the DTH sector and the impending nationwide roll-out of Goods and Services Tax (GST). The centre proposing 12 per cent and 18 per cent as the standard rates for majority of the taxable goods is a welcome step,” he added.

    Discussing the results, Goel said, “Healthy subscriber additions led to a 11.9% y-o-y growth in subscription revenues. EBITDA margin was 33.9 per cent. Net Profit for the quarter was Rs. 701 million (Rs 70.1 crore) and positive Free Cash Flow was Rs. 791 million (Rs 79.1 crore).”

    Q2-17: Zeel numbers, PAT up on higher Ad and Subscription revenue

    BENGALURU: The Subhash Chandra led content and broadcast player Zee Entertainment Enterprises Limited (Zeel) reported a 23 per cent  hike in consolidated revenue for the quarter ended 30 September 2016 (Q2-17, current quarter) as compared to the corresponding quarter of the previous year. The growth was driven by a 15.7 percent growth in Zeel’s advertising (Ad) revenue, supplemented by a 21.7 percent growth in subscription revenue. Zeel reported consolidated revenue (Total income from operations, TIO) of Rs 1,695.44 crore in Q2-17 as compared to Rs 1,378.59 crore in Q2-16.

    Ad revenue in the current quarter was Rs 959.16 crore (56.6 percent of TIO) as compared to Rs 828.98 crore (60.1 percent of TIO) in Q2-16. Subscription Income in Q2-17 was Rs 583.34 crore (34.4 percent of TIO) and in Q2-16, it was Rs 479.14 crore (34.8 percent of TIO) Other Sales and Services Income also more than doubled (by 2.17 times) year-over-year (y-o-y) in the current quarter to Rs 152.94 crore (9 percent of TIO) as compared to Rs 70.47 crore (5.1 percent of TIO) in Q2-16.

    Zeel’s Profit After Tax (PAT) in Q2-17 increased 25.4 percent y-o-y to Rs 238.38 crore (14.1 percent of TIO or margin) from Rs 190.15 crore (13.8 percent margin). Operating Profit (EBIDTA) in the current quarter also increased 36.4 percent y-o-y to Rs 489.22 crore (28.9 percent margin) from Rs 358.59 crore (26 percent margin).

    Total Expenditure in Q2-17 increased 19.3 percent to Rs 1,239.81 crore (73.1 percent of TIO) from Rs 1,039.65 crore (75.4 percent of TIO) in Q2-16.

    Finance costs in the current quarter increased 3.9 percent y-o-y to Rs 8.55 crore (0.5 percent of TIO) from Rs 8.23 crore (0.6 percent of TIO) in the corresponding year ago quarter.

    Employee benefit expense in Q2-17 increased 28.1 percent to Rs 153.27 crore (9 percent of TIO) from Rs 119.68 crore (9.9 percent of TIO) in Q2-16.

    The company spent 1.5 percent lower towards Advertising and Publicity expense in the current quarter at Rs 115.31 crore (6.8 percent of TIO) as compared to Rs 117.03 crore (8.5 percent of TIO) in Q2-16.

    International Business

    Zeel’s International Business contributes to about 15 percent of total revenue. International Business revenue in the current quarter increased 29.7 percent y-o-y to Rs 262.20 crore (15.5 percent of TIO) as compared to Rs 202.20 crore (14.7 percent of TIO).

    International ad revenue in Q2-17 increased 7.8 percent y-o-y to Rs 79.20 crore (8.3 percent of total ad revenue) as compared to Rs 73.50 crore (8.9 percent of total ad revenue). International Subscription revenue in the current quarter increased 11.5 percent y-o-y to Rs 115.80 crore (19.9 percent of total subscription revenue) from Rs 103.90 crore (21.7 percent of total subscription revenue) in Q2-16. International ‘Other sales and services income’ in Q2-17 almost tripled (by 2.71 times) y-o-y to Rs 67.20 crore (45.5 percent of total other sales and services revenue) from Rs 24.80 crore (43.9 percent of total other sales and services revenue).

    Sports Channels

    Sports channels revenue in the current quarter increased 66.3 percent y-o-y to Rs 212.50 crore (12.5 percent of TIO) as compared to Rs 127.80 crore (9.3 percent of TIO. Sports channels expenses increased 82.6 percent to Rs 229.30 crore (18.5 percent of Total Expenditure) in Q2-17 as compared to Rs 125.60 crore (12.1 percent of Total Expenditure).

    Five new channels launched in Q2-17

    The company launched three new channels in domestic market – Zee Anmol Cinema, a Hindi movie channel for FTA audience; Zee Yuva, a youth focused Marathi GEC which would it days would help it consolidate its dominant position in the Marathi market; and Zee Cinemalu, a movie channel in Telugu language, which will help it to increase our reach and expand viewer base in the market. Besides, it launched two new channels – Zee One and Zee Mundo in international markets. This takes its total number of international channels to 40 and channels dedicated to native audience to 12.

    With increasing uptake of HD that company says that it is the in process of launching HD version of its regional channels.

These draft regulations are steps in the right direction and propose a host of changes to the existing system. Although it still remains to be seen what form the final regulation will take, we hope that improved transparency will enable various stakeholders to get their rightful share in subscription revenues,” said Goenka.

    “The first half of fiscal 2017 has been strong for us. Growth in advertisement spends has held up so far. Moderation in FMCG and e-commerce spends might have some impact on industry growth in the coming quarters. On the positive side increasing competition in telecom business would help ad spend growth. GST roll-out in the coming year could boost advertising spends as a part of potential savings in tax outgo might be reinvested,” concluded Goenka.

International Subscription revenue in the current quarter increased 11.5 percent y-o-y to Rs 115.80 crore (19.9 percent of total subscription revenue) from Rs 103.90 crore (21.7 percent of total subscription revenue) in Q2-16. International ‘Other sales and services income’ in Q2-17 almost tripled (by 2.71 times) y-o-y to Rs 67.20 crore (45.5 percent of total other sales and services revenue) from Rs 24.80 crore (43.9 percent of total other sales and services revenue).

    Sports Channels

    Sports channels revenue in the current quarter increased 66.3 percent y-o-y to Rs 212.50 crore (12.5 percent of TIO) as compared to Rs 127.80 crore (9.3 percent of TIO. Sports channels expenses increased 82.6 percent to Rs 229.30 crore (18.5 percent of Total Expenditure) in Q2-17 as compared to Rs 125.60 crore (12.1 percent of Total Expenditure).

    Q2-17: Zee Learn declares maiden interim dividend

    BENGALURU: The board of directors of the Essel group’s education company Zee Learn Limited (ZLL) have declared a first time ever dividend of 5 percent per equity share of Re 1 each for the quarter ended 30 September 2016 (Q2-17, current quarter). The dividend of just 5 paise (Rs 0.05) albeit small, could be  precursor of better returns, given the fact that the company’s profit after tax (PAT) for the  current quarter is more than seven-fold (7.05 times) year-over-year (y-o-y), with operating EBIDTA margins almost doubling y-o-y from 18.2 percent in Q2-16 to 34.9 percent in Q2-17.

    ZLL CEO Debshankar Mukhopadyay said, “We are pleased to announce an interim dividend for the first time at Zee Learn Limited. This shows our commitment to the shareholders who beleived in us and continued to invest in the comoany. Q2 and H1-17 are remarkable for us and our strategy to focus on our strenghts has resulted in delivering profits which are multiple times more than profits delivered during the last financial year.”

    ZLL reported PAT of Rs 7.59 crore (22.6 percent margin) for the current quarter versus PAT of Rs 1.08 crore (3.5 percent margin) in Q2-16. PAT in the immediate training quarter (Q1-17) was Rs 8.02 crore (19.1 percent margin). Operating EBIDTA in Q2-17 more than doubled (up 2.1 times) y-o-y to Rs 11.70 crore from Rs 5.57 crore, but was 9.8 percent lower q-o-q than Rs 12.97 crore (30.8 percent margin).

    Other numbers

    ZLL’s Total Income from Operations (TIO) in the current quarter increased 9.7 percent y-o-y to Rs 33.56 crore from Rs 30.60 crore in the correspondin year ago quarter, but declined 20.2 percent q-o-q from Rs 42.06 crore in Q1-17.

    The company spent 14.5 percent less y-o-y towards purchase of  Education goods and Television content in Q2-17 at Rs 4.91 crore (14.6 percent of TIO) as compared to Rs 5.74 crore (18.8 percent of TIO) and 45.1 percent lower q-o-q than the Rs 8.93 crore (21.2 percent of TIO).

    Employees Benefit Expense in the current quarter declined 18.2 percent y-o-y to Rs 5.94 crore (17.7 percent of TIO) from Rs 7.25 crore (23.7 percent of TIO) and declined 14.5 percent q-o-q from Rs 6.94 crore (16.5 percent of TIO).

    Selling and marketing expense in Q2-17 increased 18.2 percent y-o-y to Rs 3.98 crore (11.9 percent of TIO) from Rs 3.37 crore (11 percent of TIO), but declined 33 percent q-o-q from Rs  5.95 crore (14.1 percent of TIO).

    BENGALURU: The board of directors of the Essel group’s education company Zee Learn Limited (ZLL) have declared a first time ever dividend of 5 percent per equity share of Re 1 each for the quarter ended 30 September 2016 (Q2-17, current quarter). The dividend of just 5 paise (Rs 0.05) albeit small, could be  precursor of better returns, given the fact that the company’s profit after tax (PAT) for the  current quarter is more than seven-fold (7.05 times) year-over-year (y-o-y), with operating EBIDTA margins almost doubling y-o-y from 18.2 percent in Q2-16 to 34.9 percent in Q2-17.

    ZLL CEO Debshankar Mukhopadyay said, “We are pleased to announce an interim dividend for the first time at Zee Learn Limited. This shows our commitment to the shareholders who beleived in us and continued to invest in the comoany. Q2 and H1-17 are remarkable for us and our strategy to focus on our strenghts has resulted in delivering profits which are multiple times more than profits delivered during the last financial year.”

    ZLL reported PAT of Rs 7.59 crore (22.6 percent margin) for the current quarter versus PAT of Rs 1.08 crore (3.5 percent margin) in Q2-16. PAT in the immediate training quarter (Q1-17) was Rs 8.02 crore (19.1 percent margin). Operating EBIDTA in Q2-17 more than doubled (up 2.1 times) y-o-y to Rs 11.70 crore from Rs 5.57 crore, but was 9.8 percent lower q-o-q than Rs 12.97 crore (30.8 percent margin).

    Other numbers

    ZLL’s Total Income from Operations (TIO) in the current quarter increased 9.7 percent y-o-y to Rs 33.56 crore from Rs 30.60 crore in the correspondin year ago quarter, but declined 20.2 percent q-o-q from Rs 42.06 crore in Q1-17.

    The company spent 14.5 percent less y-o-y towards purchase of  Education goods and Television content in Q2-17 at Rs 4.91 crore (14.6 percent of TIO) as compared to Rs 5.74 crore (18.8 percent of TIO) and 45.1 percent lower q-o-q than the Rs 8.93 crore (21.2 percent of TIO).

    Employees Benefit Expense in the current quarter declined 18.2 percent y-o-y to Rs 5.94 crore (17.7 percent of TIO) from Rs 7.25 crore (23.7 percent of TIO) and declined 14.5 percent q-o-q from Rs 6.94 crore (16.5 percent of TIO).

    Selling and marketing expense in Q2-17 increased 18.2 percent y-o-y to Rs 3.98 crore (11.9 percent of TIO) from Rs 3.37 crore (11 percent of TIO), but declined 33 percent q-o-q from Rs  5.95 crore (14.1 percent of TIO).

    BENGALURU: DB Corp Limited (DB Corp), home to flagship newspapers Dainik Bhaskar, Divya Bhaskar, Dainik Divya Marathi and Saurashtra Samachar reported 10.5 percent higher consolidated revenue for the quarter ended 30 September 2016 (Q2-17, current quarter) as compared to the corresponding year ago quarter. The media house’s total income from operations (TIO or revenue) in Q2-17 was Rs 528.74 crore as compared to Rs 478.36 crore.

    DB Corp’s consolidated profit after tax (PAT) increased 55.9 percent year-over-year (y-o-y) to Rs 88.52 crore as compared to Rs 56.77 crore. However, quarter-over-quarter (q-o-q) it’s PAT declined 14.9 percent from Rs 103.96 crore in Q1-17.

    EBIDTA (excluding other income) for the current quarter increased 38.6 percent y-o-y to Rs150.55 crore as compared to Rs 108.66 crore, but declined 16.9 percent q-o-q from Rs 181.06 crore.

    Four segments contribute to DB Corp’s numbers – Printing and publishing of newspaper and periodicals (Printing) segment; Radio segment; Event segment, Internet segment; and Power segment.     DB Corp’s radio segment has an FM radio network under the brand My FM for which the company reported more than double y-o-y (2.15 times) operating profit for Q2-17 at Rs  12.97 crore as compared to Rs 6.04 percent. Q-o-q also, DB Corp’s radio segment’s operating profit was 69.1 percent higher (Rs 7.67 crore in Q1-17).  My FM operating revenue for Q2-17 was 24.6 percent higher y-o-y at Rs 29.86 crore as compared to Rs 23.96 crore and 6.4 percent higher q-o-q as compared to Rs 28.06 crore.

    Printing and publishing of newspaper and periodicals (Printing) segment

    DB Corp’s Printing segment reported revenue of Rs 483.4 crore in the current quarter as compared to the Rs 443.24 crore in Q2-16. However, q-o-q, the Printing segment’s revenue declined 8.2 percent from Rs 526.55 crore. The segment’s operating profit in the current quarter increased 37.8 percent y-o-y to Rs 129 crore as compared to Rs 93.64 crore but declined 19.7 percent q-o-q from Rs 160.73 crore.

    Other numbers

    DB Corp’s consolidated Total Expenditure for Q2-17 increased 2.4 percent y-o-y to Rs 399.75 crore as compared to Rs 390.56 crore but declined 2.4 percent q-o-q from Rs 410.33 crore. Consolidated Cost of raw materials consumed in Q2-17 increased 9.1 percent y-o-y to Rs 163.34 crore from Rs 149.69 crore and increased 1.8 percent q-o-q from Rs 160.46 crore. Consolidated Employee Benefits Expense in the current quarter increased 11.5 percent y-o-y to Rs 107.41 crore as compared to Rs 96.3 crore in Q2-16 and increased 0.6 percent q-o-q from Rs 106.77 crore. Consolidated Total comprehensive income in Q2-17 increased 53.5 percent y-o-y to Rs 85.21 crore from Rs 55,51 crore, but declined 17.9 percent q-o-q from Rs 103.8 crore.

    BENGALURU: The Mukesh D Ambani led Reliance Industries Limited (RIL) organized retail segment – Reliance Retail,  continued its growth momentum and profitability in the quarter ended 30 September 2016 (Q2-17, current quarter), while its digital services offering Jio has broken all records in terms of subscriber acquisition.

    The RIL earnings release for Q2-17 says that Jio has created a world record by crossing 1.6  crore (16 million) subscribers in its first month of operations (September 2016). RIL says that Jio has achieved this growth faster than any other telecom operator or start up in the world including the likes of Facebook, WhatsApp and Skype.

    Ambani, said, “We are delighted and humbled by the enthusiastic adoption of Jio by India. Jio is built to empower every Indian with the power of data.”

    Further, RIL claims that Jio applications have been very popular on the network. In 1 week from launch, all the 12 Jio applications were ranked in the top 15 applications on Playstore and Appstore. All the Jio applications, including JioTV, JioCinema, JioMusic, JioMagazine, JioNews, which bouquet is worth Rs. 15,000 for an annual subscription, have been provided complimentary for all active Jio subscribers up to 31 December 2017.

    Organised Retail

    RIL’s Organised Retail segment revenue in the current quarter increased 63 percent year-over-year (y-o-y) to Rs 8,079 crore as compared to Rs 4,856 crore and increased 21.2 percent quarter-over-quarter (q-o-q) from Rs 6,666 crore. 

    The segment’s EBIT increased 42.1 percent y-o-y to Rs 162 crore from Rs 114 crore and increased 9.5 percent q-o-q from Rs 148 crore.

    RIL says that during the quarter, Reliance Retail added 59 stores across various store concepts and strengthened its distribution network for consumer electronics. Omni commerce channel offerings www.footprint360.com and www.ajio.com gained traction during the quarter. As on 30September 2016, Reliance Retail operated 3,442 stores across 679 cities with an area of over 1.3 crore (13 million) square feet.

    RIL numbers

    RIL achieved a turnover of Rs 81,651 crore ($ 12.3 billion), an increase of 9.6 percent, as compared to Rs 74,490 crore in the corresponding period of the previous year. Increase in revenue is primarily on account of increase in volumes in refining, petrochemical and retail businesses.

    Operating profit before other income and depreciation (before exceptional item) increased by 20.2 percent on a y-o-y basis to Rs 11,176 crore ($ 1.7 billion) from Rs 9,301 crore in the previous year. Strong operating performance from refining and petrochemicals businesses was partially offset by lower contribution from Oil &  Gas business due to lower volumes and weak price environment says that company.

    Profit after tax excluding exceptional items was higher by 43.1 perc ent at Rs 7,206 crore ($ 1.1 billion) as against Rs 5,035 crore in the corresponding period of the previous year. 

    Basic earnings per share (EPS) excluding exceptional items for the quarter ended 30th September 2016 was Rs 24.4 as against Rs 17.1 in the corresponding period of the previous year.
